“It will take the whole night at least,” he said, “to implant all my eggs.” The colony planet is a death trap. Only the tiniest fraction of humanity survives the gruesome rejection virus.
And then the aliens arrive.
The Nepenthe, too, seek a new home world, but discover instead a species capable of incubating their precious eggs: humans.
The two dying races can either reach an agreement to help each other live on … or prepare for extinction.
Publisher's Note: The We Are Nepenthe series contains tentacles, shapeshifting aliens and squirm-in-your-seat depravity. A one-click read for the seriously adventurous only.
Octavia Hyde is a reclusive author of the outrageous, the gratuitous, for the discerning libertine. She swims up from the depths from time to time, releases a cloud of ink to purge her filth traps, and then sinks below the waves to start again.
Lately for some unexpected and unexplained reason I love reading tentacle erotica stories. And this is a seriously top-notch story. Maybe the best one I have read so far. The book includes three stories actually that revolve around the two colonies of the dying human race and the dying alien race. The first two stories are MF, while the third one in MM. My favourite is by far the first story with the seductive alien commander and the dying gitl who brought back to life. The second one was ok, a bit on the funny side. The MM one was the weakest for me. I wanted a bit more tension and seduction. Overall if you like monster alien erotica, try this book ;)
Well that sure was a wild ride! What a great imagination Octavia has. This is a pen name of one of my favorite romance authors. This is only the second book of this genre I have read. I really enjoy the Nepenthe. They sure are captivating and... skilled. Loved the three stories in one in this book. I will be looking for more.
Absolutely filthy tentacle alien erotica and I loved it.
3 “couples” in 1 short but oh so dirty tale perfect for my fellow alien addicts who feel like losing a little of the romance/love story but turning up a lot of the heat.
I’d try to list the spicy tropes, but they’re sooooo dirty I couldn’t even— PSYCH! Breeding/incubation, unintentional dirty talk, dubcon, fluids, tentacles, multiple appendages™️, 2 M/F couples, 1 MM (well, human x alien), mutually beneficial arrangement…
This novella is broken up into three chapters, each containing a different human/alien pairing that follows the same storyline. I wasn't expecting this much quality world-building, but it was super interesting and well-written. Now I need to read this series. There were diverse characters and representation in this book and that alone was enough to make me love this.
I was kinda skeptical after reading the first chapter as the FMC in it didn't speak at all until the last 5% of it, but it was getting steamy. There is some non-con/dub con throughout this chapter. I can't really say it was hot because the author threw in "rectum" mid-boink and I was ripped outta the scene like a...anyways, this set up a great story, with a perfect transition into the next chapter with a badass FMC.
This second chapter was my favorite by far. I loved Yesmin and Dae Keth. Yesmin was rational (I sure af wouldn't be when told I'd need to incubate some eggs lmao) and brave and strong and I want a whole book dedicated to her. Even though she agreed to be a host, she demanded she get pleasure out of this exchange as well, and Dae Keth delivered, boy did he deliver. It was so...sensual. That was surprising considering this is a smut book about alien tentacle creatures depositing their eggs into women. Never read this kink (oviposition) before, but I might will have to check it out too, oh lordy. 🙈
I was surprised by the MM chapter! I thought it'd be all human-women/male-Nepenthe stories, but this one had some intrigue thrown in amidst the smut 👀🥵👀 Mur Desh won me over on the Nepenthe and now I must read more.
This somehow felt like a perfectly finished story while also leaving it open for more stories to be told in the future. Really recommend this.
Very well written and the world building looks like the author put some thought into making aliens something different rather than the typical bidepal human-like creatures we tend to see.
There are three stories intertwined in this book. Very very short tho. Too short but it’s a good start 👍
This isn't a story. There's no plot. It's just 3 vignettes, and the first one involves non-consensual sex. The last one is M/M. After each alien has sexed up the human, that's the end. You don't get to see what happened after that. No conversations, no adjusting to each other or learning about each other's culture, nothing. Basically all you get is three sex scenes in a row, each featuring a different couple, and that's it. I was disappointed. It had potential to be a really interesting story like Ice Planet Barbarians, but the author seems to have run out of steam once her characters climaxed.
4.4 stars. Uh. Whoa. This had no business being so hot.
This was 100% alien. Totally weird. And yet still really hot.
We got the POVs of three different couples. The first being the first interaction between the Nepenthe and the humans. The second being the second, the tester that would report back if it was safe and worth the risks. And the third between a secretive human man and a secretive Nepenthe. This one was also super hot, but made reference to mystery that isn’t explained further and I couldn’t really figure out.
I don’t know what will happen with that last couple, but it seems sketchy as fuck.
I for sure will be reading the next book. Hot damn.
Genre: Sci-fi Erotica Type: Book 1 of We Are Nepenthe series POV: Third Person Rating: 3.75 Stars (4.5 for smut | 3 for story)
If you’re looking for tentacle porn, this book is it. It went straight to the action with all the squirmy goodness. This book is more of three interconnected short stories. There’s a minimal background story with a very open ending. My favorite story was the second one with Yesmin.
Nepenthe is the story of survival and adapting. It would appeal to readers who enjoy sci-fi erotica.

This is more like 3 consecutive short stories set in the same story rather than a novel/novella.
The encounters (I wouldn't call them romances, and not because they are short!) are MF, MF and MM.
The first intimate scene has been described as dubcon by some readers, but to me it was clearly noncon and even though that isn't usually a dealbreaker for me, it was here because it happened while the heroine had been starving after eating the mortal remains of her crewmates who died for several days or weeks and was so dehydrated and weak she was practically a corpse and was just lying around and waiting to die while going in and out of consciousness. The fact that the alien guy didn't attempt to administer first aid, give her water or food before raping her is really yucky to me .
I am also not sure why all these people and there stories were fit into one short novella, short story-style. The exposition was all over the place and the author had to "tell" us all about her characters.
I would call this tentacle porn rather than scifi romance or even erotica, because the sex scenes meant nothing, essentially.
Holy tentacles Batman- whew this is a hot little novella!
I enjoyed reading Eris Adderly and this is her sci-fi series so I thought I would give it a try. Tentacles are a great idea and this gets very creative and extremely graphic so if you are squeamish, you may want to pass.
There are 3 stories, the POV from 2 different “couples” but they all center around the same story and timeline. Definitely dub-con in the first story, the other 2 are more informed consent and the 3rd one is MM. As they are novellas, they are missing some information that would contribute to the storyline.
The Nepenthe have arrived in time to save the last handful of humans and they are at the end of their race as well, fleeing their home planet with no females. They can shape shift to mimic other forms.
It’s an interesting premise and I am hoping more is explained in the next book. Which I am starting immediately!
Kinky Aliens This is a short (100 pgs.) of alien porn. 😊 I typically wouldn’t rate until the next book, because it’s more of a prequel without a real plot. I decided to rate on the unique/creativity, because I’ve never read anything like it, (laying eggs... tentacles... oh my) but if you're interested in more of a story; wait until book 2.
This story sets up with humans and nepenthes that are both on verge of becoming extinct. It follows three separate couples as they meet/mate, and teases for the upcoming books. The couples are diverse, and couple three is M/M. Overall- quick, unique, alien erotica free to read with KU.
Three short stories following humans and aliens forming an alliance for survival. Mainly sex, tentacles and egg implanting. First two stories are M/F with the last being M/M and of course my favorite of the three.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I wanted to like this because the idea of tentacle action during fictional sex scenes is hot... But the non-consensual part just threw me out of this book.
Will try a different tentacle book... At some point.
So I read the two books in this series out of order because I’m an agent of chaos. Book 2, Host, is an excellent example of how to do alien smut right (in my subjective opinion). This book is….mediocre: I think partly because it’s actually 3 short stories smooshed together? So it’s a short book with a lot of characters, which just doesn’t work for me since no one gets much screen time.
There is some more backstory here for how the whole alien breeding plot is set up, but you don’t really need it to get book 2.
If you read all things tentacle romance, then sure, give it a go. Otherwise, meh.
So this book was limited in plot, although the plot that was present was relevant to the smut. It followed 3 couples and deals with dubcon. The last humans and the last Nepenthe have to decide if they can ally for their own species’ interests.
Spice: 5/5
Triggers: dubcon, DP, epidemic, power exchange, brief mention of spouse loss
This is a fabulous book, made up of three short stories, all involving first contact between humans and the Nepenthe, who are "not squid" but a tentacle-y, shapeshifting, alien race. The Nepenthe rescue the humans from their failing Colony on a world that's killing them, but they do have an ulterior motive. The Nepenthe are also interstellar orphans, having lost their world, but they've also lost all their females, and they need new hosts for their eggs... Does this sound like tentacle space p*rn? Maybe, and this book could be, if you read it for that. But like Last Hour of Gann, this book is so much more. It's about the human condition, bravery in the face of overwhelming fear and adversity, connection with those who may not be squids but are certainly nothing like us, and discovering "the self" in "the other." Nepenthe is everything I look for in speculative fiction. It's engaging, thrilling, and made me think. This book is my favorite read so far of 2020, and has gone on my permanent favorite books list. I cannot recommend it highly enough and can't wait for Book 2!
An interesting story that follows three individuals from each race as they meet and agree to work together to survive.
First couple is m/f and involves the leader of the Nepenthe as he finds and seduces/dubcon a human woman in her last hours of life. She was one of the last survivors and was weak until rescued. He takes a liking to her but it is something I'd like to see more of their relationship in the future.
Second couple is m/f and involves the second-in-command of the Nepenthe and the self-proclaimed leader of the remaining humans. I think this is my favorite of the three stories because each individual is talking to each other about choices made and why.
Third couple is m/m and was quite a different take on the human for me. He was a little confusing to figure out until much later. I hope to see more of these two in the future. They will add much complexity to things with their professions.
Tentacles - interesting and erotic in this novella.
This was definitely different than what I was expecting. I was intrigued by how these two distinctly different races were able to communicate in several different ways. I wanted further explanation and hope that comes in the next book.
I did not know how to review this. Not because it was bad, but because my brain was stunned into silence in the first chapter.
You know that scene in Sherlock (BBC) where cutie-pie Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch) is sitting comfortably in his chair, battle armor on in the form of a Vicars collar and some knicks and cuts on his face courtesy of Watson (Martin Freeman) and he is comfortable but ready and confident? And then Irene walks in, in nothing but her battle armor, naked as a summer sky and Sherlock is DISARMED, he can't read her, zipo zilch nada niente? Then Watson walks in, gets flustered, looks everywhere including Irene's boobs then lifts his eyebrows, coughs as if to say "DAMN girl put those weapons away" - you remember that moment? Yeah you do.
That was me, both stunned and speechless and 🤗 in the first chapter like WTF but also....eh okay that's hot.
Plot/Storyline/Themes: So there is actually a plot to this. A planet rejects two species, human and nepenthe. Nepenthe are down to their last males, most of the remaining human survivors happen to be female. Surprise Surprise - you know what's next.
Character Development/Favorite Character: The uptight Magistrate had the most ... ahem, development.
Favorite/Curious/Ludicrous/Unique Scene:: Yesmin's chapter was a whole scene.
Favorite/Curious/Ludicrous/Unique Quotes: 🖤 “god.” The words shuddered out of her, and it could only be a good sign, if she was invoking a deity.”(Dae Keth on, Yesmin)
Favorite/Curious/Ludicrous/Unique Concepts: ■ Well, those are 10 arms tooo many ■ Nepenthe taboo: arms again.

This was certainly a bit outside my normal alien story zone, but the writing was GOOD and the characterization was fun . . . along with finally some m/m alien action! First story was hella dub-con and that's really not my jam, and overall they were decently written but just basically one-shots. If that's your thing, you'd like this, but I'm more interested in the fuller, novel-length "sequel."
This was literally 'immersion' in a fascinating world including getting caught in the tangle of arms or tentacles. The initial contact between humans and aliens may be a bit dub-con, but the ensuing diplomatic mission to find a reliable agreement to ensure survival was grandly told, compellingly drawn and interestingly fleshed out.
Courage, curiosity and openness in all things is usually what enables the way forward.
A fat reading recommendation for all with an open mind.
Re-read Jan 2023 2022 was in its whole a bit alienating me I thought this book is a good start and yes such a good choice and thing to read it. Such a fascinating world and story building - very well written and developed and I am sure its worth a re-read in the future when book 3 Chimera is out to complete the journey. Can’t wait and follow up with book 2 Host for now.
There is HELLA dub con in this, I would argue for 2 of the 3 stories. I'm kind of torn on the rating.
For erotica only and if you can ignore the dub con, especially in the first story (which is a big if) then this is probably more of a 3-3.5
But I was so interested in the story of the Nepenthe and the human colony on the planet and the virus and so much background hinted at but not expanded on that I was really wanting more of that. I also found the POV confusing. The chapter title is about that character but then reading the chapter, it almost felt like it was from someone else's POV in the first 2 stories.
My favorite was probably the 2nd story although story #3 was interesting in its own way.
My first time with this author. Gotta say, I am NOT disappointed!
If you like fast burn, filthy erotica, this is for you.
Aliens with tentacles and ALL the right moves! They can shift in to humanoid (sort of) shape if they want to! Decent plot and story to keep me interested. Characters could get interesting as this story progresses.
