The secret origins of some of the most important Slayers in history.... and the First Appearance of a new character with a familiar face who will change the way you look at Buffy and everything about her world. This is the Buffy comic that everyone will be talking about and the most important new character in over twenty years!

It sounded so exciting when I heard about it - I love the historic slayers, mixing different cultures, historical events, and putting a supernatural twist on it. So I was super excited when I saw this on the comic previews. Unfortunately, despite being marked #1, it's not actually part of a series, but rather a one-shot made up of a few short stories.
It's interesting. The opening is a little confusing - I'd heard rumours of a Buffy re-boot, so was this part of the new series and I didn't realise it had started? Or a teaser chapter? Consensus on GR seems to be it's a snapshot into an alternate universe. It's an interesting short, with Buffy, Giles, and her girlfriend Cordelia as they working on figuring out how to close a hellmouth that's opened at a school dance. The art is alright. Not fond of the character designs - Buffy and Cordelia looked older than in their teens, like the illustrator was used to working on the post-season 7 comics, maybe?
The next two short stories are historical. The 'titles' are more of a case-file name, so I won't list them - the Irish title is basically a giant spoiler for the story.
The first taking place in the Philippines, in 1910 as a young woman named Matay works to track down a demon called an Aswang and end the horrific deaths occurring in the nearby village. This story is interesting. I loved that it explored something outside of European culture (not that Europe doesn't have tons of lovely monsters to see). And it had some interesting twists. The art is... intersting here. The style is really unique, which is good. Not my thing, and the faces were quite odd in some panels. I liked the colours used, though, and the watercolour styled art.
The second story is set in Ireland, in 1947, where the slayer Una sets out to rescue her friend Kerry from what at first seems to be a more everyday threat - being sent to the local Magdalene laundries after a local boy starts spreading lies to ruin her reputation. Things aren't what they seem, however, and Una is lucky her mad-scientist watcher has some new toys for her. The art style is - mostly - a step up in this story, in my opinion. Though there is one character who I'm not sure whether she's meant to be a teen, or in her 60s - I think that's her on the cover looking 40-something at best, but in the comic she looks younger, albeit still silver-haired. However, it's probably the least compelling story, for me. Between the giant spoiler right in the title, and the new toy from her watcher about 3 pages in, it's pretty clear what she's going to be going up against. It would even have been a better story if they left out the supernatural, or changed it up with a cult or something - it wouldn't be that unbelievable given what we know these days about some of the things that happened in these institutions.
Recopilación de tres historias cortas sobre cazadoras.
En general el guión y el dibujo de todo el número son bastante flojos, pero me han gustado la segunda y la tercera historia: "The Hilot of 1910" y "The Sisters of Angelus", respectivamente. Sobre todo está última, que tiene un guión y un dibujo que no están nada mal.
This was a really exceptional anthology (and I'm not just saying that for Cordelia/Buffy reasons...). Every story felt complete and made me feel a LOT of ways.
I want this story to have its own series. I cannot even express how much I'm interested in a world where Buffy and Cordelia are girlfriends. It's like the writer has read Buffy fanfiction (and maybe she has)! Also, I have so many questions. This is the Buffy that our Buffy ran into in the Hellmouth, right? Does she get to return home? I hope so! I hope she and Cordelia are very happy!
The Hilot of 1910
Rating: ***
This was the story in this issue that I had the hardest time following. I'm certain that this is supposed to help explain the Hellmother, but instead I was just confused. I really loved the art style, though!
The Sisters of Angelus
Rating: *****
A slayer in the 1900s? That slayer then having to go rescue a friend from an asylum/home for "fallen women" only to discover that it's run by vampire nuns who were turned by Angelus and now have an order dedicated to his honor? Someone please make this into a Netflix Original series!
Cool little collection of Slayers throughout history. We start with an alternate timeline Buffy that was created purely for the Buffdelia stans. We also get to flash back to Slayers in 1910 Philippines and 1947 Dublin. It was cool that the artwork changed for each Slayer vignette. The lore of Slayers from previous generations has always been really interesting to me, so I ate this right up.
Gosh I need a series of these stories. An alternative Buffy timeline, and mysterious figure in the past and a cult of Angelus, vampire nuns. Each story has it's own art style, so they stand apart from each other. I'm intrigued to see where this goes.
(Copy and Pasted from my review on TheStoryGraph) 3.75 I really loved the first story so much. The other ones were ok, though the second one had some problems. But the first story gave me an alternative universe where Cordy and Buffy are in love and BOY DO I JUST NEED A WHOLE SERIES OF THAT
Ok…. Hello again Boom Buffy. I found three of your back issues in a comic book shop being sold 3 for €5 and somehow left myself be sucked back in to your weird and messy universe.
Anyway,
So this book has three short stories in it.
The first one seems to be an alternate universe where Buffy and Cordelia are dating and the art is crap and that was so confusing because it came out of left field. So it’s an alternate universe from Buffy the show, and also Buffy the Boom. Like just say that somewhere. I was like when did I miss Cordy and Buffy getting together and Willow dying.
So I was about to just stop cos this Boom Buffy is honestly exhausting and stupid.
Anyway that story ended and there was a second one.
It’s about a Slayer from 1910 from somewhere in Asia. The art was totally different. It wasn’t an alternative universe Buffy so it was good.
Then that story ended and there was a third one. And let me tell you!!!!
So it’s about Una The Vampire Slayer in 1947 Dublin, Ireland. I’m Irish so already interested.
Then the story is her one Dub friend, Kerry, there’s been rumours she’s been making the beast with two backs as Shakespeare would say, with a boy and so gets sent to a Magdalene Laundry.
So like, they are a historic stain on the conscience and memory of Ireland. Where unwed pregnant ladies were sent to these nuns to hide them away, have their babies and give them up for adoption and basically do penance and cleanse themselves of their sin. Like they are real in our universe real.
But then the fricken nuns turn out to be vampires that worship Angelus. Now, the story is called “The Sisters of Angelus” which I suppose is hella spoiler-y to a non-Irish person. But to me being from Ireland we still have the Angelus on tv here. It’s the Roman Catholic prayer at 6pm every day.
So you can see the Sisters of Angelus here and be like yeah okay Nuns and not think oh okay David Boreanaz. So it didn’t spoil it for me.
Anyway, one of them has the Gem of Amara… so many questions. How? Was it in Ireland long? How did it get to Sunnydale to be there in 2000ish?
But Una has a spell from her Watcher (who’s a woman and called Graham; maybe like Giles is Rupert Giles because Graham is not a woman’s name) she can make a mini Sun which is awesome and I want it for Ireland rains too much purposes. So to deal with the Gem of Amara she cuts off the Mother Superior’s hand and potentially dies in the process.
That story was great. It basically got all the stars I’ve given this.

I only have two strong gripes about this addition to the Boom Studios Buffy comics, and they're both connected. 1) That this entry is way too short (only 40 pages), and 2) that's it's marketed as though it's going to be the start of a new line when it's merely a standalone anthology of three short stories. The first story is the strongest, but not my favorite artwork in the collection. The opening story focuses on an alternate universe version of Buffy who is dating Cordelia and is dealing with the loss of her best friend, Willow, when the Hellmouth opens at the school dance. The comic itself mostly focuses on Buffy fighting the Hellmother after having jumped into the portal, and honestly, it has a bit of downer ending. There's nothing uplifting about this version of the story (outside of Buffdelia being a canon thing in that universe, and I wish we had more time to enjoy that development) and can leave the reader feeling a bit nihilistic at its close.
The second story had an interesting art design -- watercolor -- and was set in a fun locale and a cool demon -- the Aswang, which was a one-off villain in another supernatural based series I watched at some point (probably Supernatural, let's be real) -- but was seriously under utilized. I enjoyed the reversal of expectations the final reveal gave us in this story, but we're not given any time to sit with it and its implications either. And that's a real pitfall of these shorter entries.
The third story is set in Dublin with somewhat stereotypical Irish characterization, but it wasn't so over the top that I couldn't enjoy the story I was given. This is the story that has the strongest tie back to the visual canon, what with mentions of the Gem of Amarra (which allows a vampire to walk in the sunlight when wearing it) and the fact that the nuns are part of the Order of Angelus, and the clues given suggest that they were nuns who were turned by Angelus and were carrying on his work. (So, it would be interesting to see if there are corresponding mentions of this order within the Angel + Spike line of comics from Boom Studios).
A great trio of stories; just not a lot to really sink your teeth into.
This comic contains 3 stories. I will rate each story individually down below. Overall I have this binding 4/5 and that is greatly due to the first story.
“Where all paths lead” 5/5: is a story with Buffy down in the hellmouth trying to beat the hellmother. Also did I miss something when did Buffy and Cordy start dating. Did I miss an issue? Anyway love them together. Although if boom ever intrudes Faith and think her and Buffy would be a cute couple.
“The Hilot of 1910” 1/5: the artwork on this story for me was a miss didn’t find the story intriguing at all but that could just be me.
“The Sisters of Angelus” 3/5: I was hoping for Angelus to make an appearance no such luck but there is mentions of him. This story I thought was okay and I liked the artwork for this one. This one is about a slayers friend who gets sent to a church (catholic reform?) and all the nuns are vampires that were turned by Angelus. This one was another fun read and you will have to read it for yourself to see how that ends.

i loved this and i could honestly read an entire series about each of the stories. cordelia has always been my fave, and her as a VAMPIRE and buffy's GIRLFRIEND? yes please !! i've never seen this pairing get the attention it deserves before. the other two stories were super interesting too, i don't really think about the slayers before buffy a lot but goddamn i should. the third story could've been a buffy x ahs crossover episode, and that can only be amazing. i definitely recommend this if you're a buffy fan<3
One really boring alternate universe take back in the stupid Hellmouth, one pointless story that not all monsters are bad, and then a kick arse Irish slayer with amazing artwork. So uneven to say the least.
I was so lost trying to figure out what was happening in the first story. I guess it’s an alt-universe story? The second story was interesting but the 3rd was my favorite. But nothing about this matched the description. Who’s important?? Which origin story is the biggest deal? I’m so lost.
I really needed my Buffy fix. I finally got around to reading some of the extended buffy verse. I am happy i finally did it. It was different but a good different. There was a few things that i didn't like. But overall my buffy heart is conent.
Of the three short stories in this I liked the last two the best, I find it really interesting to see the ideas that people have had about the adventures of the other Slayers from other times.
