Notice: This is a SUMMARY of Tara Westover’s bestseller, Educated: A Memoir.
Educated: A Memoir became a #1 New York Times bestseller for simple reasons… In Educated: A Memoir, Dr. Tara Westover recounts her experiences growing up in rural Idaho under the authority of fundamentalist Mormon parents and an abusive older brother. Her father believed public education to be a danger to their way of life and, therefore, Tara did not attend school. Her mother, a self-taught midwife, and herbalist served as the family’s source of medical assistance during sickness and even severe injuries.
Tara eventually left her mountain home and received a formal education, graduating magna cum laude from Brigham Young University and then earning her Ph.D. from Cambridge University while also winning a Gates Cambridge Scholarship. The process of becoming educated set her on a path that proved unacceptable to her parents and some of her other family members.
It was also a path that gave Tara the ability to perceive her entire childhood in a much different light. In that light, she found a truer way of existing.
Her story reveals nine principles that are present in many journeys walked by those who seek growth, maturity, truth, and authenticity. This summary and analysis shares those nine principles and the specific instances of Tara’s story that revealed them.
If you resonate with Tara’s journey and the principles therein, we highly advise you to read the full book.

It’s a captivating memoir that tells the story of the author’s upbringing in a strict and isolated household in rural Idaho. Despite facing numerous obstacles, Tara Westover manages to escape her unconventional upbringing and pursue an education. This powerful memoir explores themes of resilience, self-discovery, and the transformative power of education. It’s a thought-provoking and inspiring read that I enjoyed reading.
This book is not a summary in the traditional sense. What it does is identify 9 Life Principles in 9 distinct chapters and within those chapters give examples. What I wanted was a summary of the book in logical order. I did read Educated last year and last night my book club discussed the book. This summary did not help me.
While the premise of this summary is laudable, it was not helpful to me.
The 9 Life Lessons:

Tara Westover’s memoir, Educated, is an absolute powerhouse. It’s the kind of book that sticks with you long after you’ve finished it. Westover grew up in a survivalist family in rural Idaho, with no formal education and some pretty extreme challenges. Despite everything, she somehow makes her way to Cambridge University. The story is both heartbreaking and incredibly inspiring. It’s not just about getting an education; it’s about finding yourself and breaking free from the past. Westover’s honesty and courage shine through every page, making this one of the most compelling reads I’ve come across.
unimaginable that in this day and age, parents can get away with treating their kids this way! Had to read it all to see how things turned out, but it was a shocking, upsetting book to read. If you want a book for reality, this is it. For enjoyment, move on to another title.
Excellent read, highly recommend to all persons with family members who don’t get along perfectly. That would include all of us. Great insight into families and mental illness. In today’s culture with the socioeconomic pressures, this is a must read.
A wonderful book that confirms to me that no matter how high you reach, no matter how much academic education you receive, the messages you receive in childhood affect your adult life.
With so many great books to read, I wanted to explore a faster way to intake great works. This executive summary did not disappoint, and in fact, I’ll be making space to read the book after all.
