Jack Quaid

Between the years 1980 and 1999, American novelist Jack Quaid produced a series of fun and wild stories where anything could happen, and with Quaid behind the typewriter, they usually did. He called these books his Electric Mayhem series.

Jack Quaid was born in West Hollywood, California, in 1953. He won a scholarship to UCLA but dropped out after six months for a reason that, to this day, remains unknown. Two years later, he sold his first short story to Startling Mystery Magazine, but it was the publication of his novel The City on the Edge of Tomorrow in 1980 and the film adaptation starring Bruce Dern that set him on his way.

Fearing his initial success would fade, Quaid wrote obsessively for the next two decades and published under many pseudonyms. It’s unknown just how many books he produced during this period, but despite the name on the jacket, savvy readers always knew they were reading a Jack Quaid novel within the first few pages.

His books have long been out of print, and they now live on the dusty shelves of secondhand bookstores and in the memories of those who have been lucky enough to read them.

Quaid’s current whereabouts are unknown.

ESCAPE FROM EVERYWHERE is the omnibus of the Parker Ames Trilogy, also known as The Last Final Girl (but not related to the other novel called that). Parker Ames is a Sydney Prescott/Cassie Hack-esque protagonist who is an ordinary young woman caught up in a slasher's massacre, who is then recruited and then trained to hunt slashers. The books are allegedly the assembled works of a fictional 80s science fiction writer named Jack Quaid but are really the works of Luke Preston.

The books are short, fun, entertaining, and filled with homages to 80s horror. Parker manages to kill EXPYs of Jason, Michael Myers, and Chucky but never gets around to Freddy. She also runs a gauntlet of trauma that is difficult to describe but the books are never hard to read. They're also filled with a huge cast of cannon fodder who get slaughtered in various gory ways by the slashers.

I personally had a lot of fun with the books and enjoyed all of them. I bought them separately but bought this version as well in hopes of gaining a bit more of the framing story as well as supporting the author.

I actually love this 3 part series. The hunting of slashers and how they became a slasher explains a lot. they even gave Kudos to the famous slashers. I like the fact they have the main character who was a final girl turn hunter. These stories are place in the 80s and is hard ass girl. She is trained to be a slasher hunter and will go out and hunt them or they will come to her. 5 slashers out of 5

This was a super fun series to read. It is pretty much like reading a trilogy of 80s slasher movies back to back. While this is not "literature," I did enjoy the character development throughout the series. Even with minor characters that you know are going to get killed off, the author starts the chapter with a little bit of background on each person so that they aren't just a name.

As I know the rating goes toward the quality of the book and the author, if I could deduct a half star or so for the publisher/editor, I would. I don't know if I acquired an advanced copy somehow or what but this book is loaded with typos, misspellings, missing words, etc. It is an English teacher's nightmare. I tried to not let that detract from enjoyment of the overall story though.

Damn good. Lots of action. A trilogy worth reading. Book 1 five stars. Book two four stars. Book three another five stars. Not fine lit but fun. Parker Ames is like a female Ash. The story line about Jack Quaid adds an extra zing to it all. Very 80s with some great monsters and one liners. This trilogy would make an entertaining set of films. Pluses for the female heroine who’s not just a pretty face.

Everything you love about slasher movies

This is absolutely the definitive slasher movie trilogy. Forget Fred’s, Jason, Michael or Chucky. You need to fear Hurricane Williams. There is comedy, horror, and a ton of action. This books only disappointing parts come in the first 2 books when they jump over big sections of “missing” sections that are explained in the introductions for each book.

I read this last year sometime and it has stuck with me as one of the funnest books I’ve read. I remember planning to read only one book at a time, but after the first in this I couldn’t put it down.

Fun read for connoisseurs of 80/90s horror

Pretty fun read, would make excellent films. Definitely has that 80s/90s feel. I would definitely recommend picking up the complete collection.
