Julia’s house was the nicest on the street. But things aren’t always what they seem. Her parents fought constantly, and Julia was right in the middle - close to her father and estranged from her abusive mother. Then the worst thing happened. Julia’s father committed suicide. At least that’s what her mother had told her. With the help of her boyfriend, Julia uncovers a trail of clues which expose a shocking secret. Did Julia ever really know her father? Did he take his own life or did something far more sinister happen?
could have been an interesting plot line. Note: SPOILER ALERT What kept me reading was my eagerness to get the evil mother her comeuppance. The daughter even had her mother typecast as a sociopath and then a psychopath. I couldn't wait for the mother to be revealed as the hideous person she was. But did that happen? No, the reader gets to the end only to see evil win out. I only recommend this book to someone who enjoys seeing evil prevail.
Agree with most of the reviews, satisfying plot and characters with a very unsatisfactory enduring. Slow start as it meanders (I began to think it was a YA). Rounded to a feasible plot ... but what’s with the end? If a continuation is forthcoming, I’d consider this one a cliffhanger.
Great story. Lots of psychological warfare. I was a little disappointed with the ending. I thought the dad and daughter would ride off into the sunset but they just continued the same way.
This is far from being a normal house. This story is so very sad. The torture of a young girl, the screaming and cold heartless, manipulative mother makes life unbearable. I had a hard time reading it because I identified so much with the girl. The ending was not suspected.
David and his wife just bought a house, but everything has to be just the way his wife wants it. No ends its or buts! She is a drama queen who borders on the edge of being a sociopath. When she finds out she's pregnant, David is over the moon, but she's depressed. When their daughter Julia is born David has to take care of her since his wife won't even hold her. His wife's parents let them borrow their housekeeper so David can go back to work. He's a CPA and is building his business. When Julia starts getting older she stays in her room to avoid her mental and verbal abusive mother. David doesn't fare any better with the abuse his wife deals out to both of them. When David finds out that his wife and his business partner have paid to have him murdered things take a shocking twist!
I loved it! I can understand why some people did not like the ending, but I found it quite believable. Spoiler Alert: the leopard can't change its spots. It takes real strength and desire to change one's lifestyle and personality. If you don't believe it, how long did your New Year's resolution last???? I definitely felt empathy for Julie, but she is a strong character and the ending gives us a hint that she will pursue her life plan and come out even stranger.
I'm finished with The Normal House: I’ve picked up another page turner. Apparently 2020 will be the year of page turners! This was a great book. Unfortunately it had an odd ending. I was a bit disappointed in it. It felt a bit rushed, but it may be the lead in to another book. If so, I'll definitely edit my review.
