ARIES: Speculative Fiction Inspired by the Zodiac is the fourth in a series of speculative fiction anthologies inspired by the signs of the Zodiac.

It is a collection of twisted poems and dark stories inspired by the sign of Aries, as well as retellings of the myths behind the sign. The tales span multiple genres, including horror, fantasy and sci-fi, told by some award-winning authors and new stars of the Australian and New Zealand speculative fiction scene, such as Nikky Lee, Aiki Flinthart, Stephen Herczeg and Zoey Xolton.

Being upfront about my bias, I'm published in this. Given that, I didn't expect to be so absorbed. I read continually most of the way through, which is rare for me with an anthology.

The stories and poems are broad-ranging - a girl is possessed by the spirit of a ram, superheroes embodying the constellations engage in battle, a trio of witches find a new ally. From futuristic to fantasy, the editors picked an order that fit together neatly, and I discovered a few new authors to take note of.

The collection also ends with a story that threads throughout several (or maybe all?) of the volumes, so will definitely be checking out more.

*EDITOR'S REVIEW*
ARIES is the fourth anthology in Aussie Speculative Fiction's Zodiac-inspired series.

Like each book in the series, ARIES begins with an introductory poem by Zoey Xolton and a foreword by Sasha Hanton, introducing the sign. From there, 'The Arietis Showdown' is an action-packed sci-fi retelling of the Greek myth behind the sign (granted some creative license). There are several other great sci-fi pieces here too, 'Made' by Zena Shapter, 'Four Hours of Instability' by Aiki Flinthart and 'These Electric Sheep Need Electric Grass' by Brianna Bullen - Shapter, Flinthart and Bullen are exciting, talented authors that everyone should be taking note of.

The dark and historical fantasy pieces 'The Subjugation of Rama' (Jenna Whittaker), 'Witchfinder's Lover' (Stephen Herczeg) and 'Your Death I do Fortell' (Nikky Lee) are gritty and compelling. A.G. Jones and BG Hilton provide some levity with 'Non-Human Resources' and 'Night Train to Colchis' - a different take on the story of Jason and the Argonauts.

If that wasn't enough, there are also poems and some heart-warming and heart-wrenching stories by Sam M. Phillips, Emilie Morscheck, Rohsaan McInnes, Lisa Rodrigues and the continuation of Helena McAuley's 'This is the Dawning' series. It absolutely has something for everyone.

Aries is a great edition to this zodiac collection. A wide variety of stories so there’s sure to be one that appeals to all forms of readers.
My favourite was ‘Non-Human Resources’ by A.G.Jones - the story follows Seamus Kent, HR Manager, as he welcomes an accounting firms first non human employee. The story was funny and I’d happily read more office type hijinks set in this firm

Several really interesting stories and interpretations of the folklore surrounding the Astrological sign of Aires. Enjoyed another great story by Stephen Herczeg, WITCHFINDER’S LOVER and FOUR HOURS OF INSTABILITY by Aiki Flinthart. THE SUBJUGATION OF RAMA by Jenna Whittaker was also a great read.

Another brilliant collection in the Zodiac Series from Dead Set Press. A brilliant line up of authors and stories. I am always impressed when stories use humour that actually makes me giggle.

The writing and standard of the works included are exceptional.
