Dokiri Brides #2

Erik the Tempered

Rate this book
She never thought to find love. He never thought to keep it.

Sold to whoremasters by her own husband, Tysha flees into the night with pursuers hot on her trail. For once in her life, the gods show mercy and deliver her to Erik the Tempered, a man as wild as he is noble. With him, Tysha’s long-dormant heart awakens, helplessly drawn to the quiet, enigmatic man who seems content to keep his distance.

Obligated to choose a bride for himself, Erik has spent weeks in half-hearted pursuit of a woman. Any woman will do, so long as he can easily say goodbye. However, fate brings him an unexpected bride, as nervous as she is lovely. With each passing day, Erik realizes his timid bride conceals the heart of a lion and finds it harder to turn from her sweet touch and haunting green eyes. But loving her comes with a great price: his family, his home, his purpose.

Soon Erik and Tysha will discover both the reward and cost of unconditional love.

Author’s Note: This is not a shifter romance. The Dokiri men are savage enough in their manly forms. That being said, this book features subdued sexual content. Enjoy the heat but don’t expect to get singed.

Trigger warning: This novel plays on the trope of abduction. While Dokiri men won’t let anything keep them from the woman they love, even that woman herself, all sexual acts in this book are consensual.

When Denali Day was trying to figure out “what to be when she grew up” she noticed all her written stories featured a scene where the beautiful heroine patched up the wounds of a gallant hero. So she decided to become a nurse. Twelve years and two degrees later, she realized all she ever really wanted was to be a writer.

Now she lives in the midwest with her adoring husband, a real life gallant hero, and their two wicked goblins (children). When she isn’t writing she’s reading and when she’s not doing either of those things she’s probably plundering the fridge for something she can smother in whipped cream.

"You give me too much credit. And so does Hollen."
Tysha squinted, trying to understand him. "You love him very much, don't you? And all your brothers?"
Erik nodded with hsi gaze fixed on the ceiling. "Yes. BEdmeg is where I live. But my brothers are my true home.">/blockquote>

Picture me like the 'my body is ready' meme.

So so so so good! I feel like these books get better and better. I love how this one still tells a beautiful love story and yet is more focused on the Dokiri tribe and their journey.
This book is also such an achievement in terms of plot and character arcs, and it deals with subjects such as motherhood, feminism and domestic abuse along with a fantasy factor that got me completely invested in the Dokiri world.
It really made me feel incredibly proud to be a woman who's not afraid to fight for her rights and needs, in a world still ruled by men alone.

I here and now proclaim Denali Day the queen of viking-inspired stories, relatable feminism and motherhood based content, plot development and writing improvement.

Thanks to author Denali Day for the opportunity (and all the funny chats :D) and publisher BookFunnel for this ARC

"You're not a god, Erik." Tysha threaded her fingers through his hair. "But I worship you all the same."

description

In this book we focus on Erik, the brother of Hollen who was the main character in the first book of this series. He is a silent and thoughtful man and finds himself with a bride when he gets injured while protecting her. Tysha is timid but a very hardworking and strong woman. Her self-esteem has been beaten down by her husband, who because of a debt sells her to a brothel. I loved that she fought back and saved herself from that horrible place. Erik was at the right place at the right time and got injured while he was trying to protect her from a pack of wolves.

Tysha was very courageous and even though she came across as an obedient wife, she still had that fire inside of her that needed to be sparked. She was able to find herself in the right environment where she could blossom and figure out what she really wanted in life. Erik was a great partner and even though he distanced himself from her because of a secret that was haunting him, he still was very patient and sweet with her. They were just perfect for each other, and I loved seeing Tysha grow so much in this book. She overcame so many hardships and at the end became a fearless warrior. This book was romantic, action-packed, and emotional at times. I already look forward to the next book in this series.

4.25 stars!!

I liked this one soooo much better than the first one!! For one, I was routing for both characters. I adored the hero and heroine equally this time around, and I thought they worked well together. I understood their inner and outer struggles, and the characters felt a bit more layered this time.

I think the thing that really sold this story was Erik's big secret. (I wont reveal because I think its better to read than explain.) At first when he fought his attraction to the heroine, I thought this would be the classic case of "I dont deserve her because I have mommy and daddy issues" but the author actually uses the world she created to influence the problems what any of these characters might have. Push and pull that doesnt make you want to rip your hair out.

I thought the heroines internal struggle was realistic and genuine. We get to see actual growth from her; a damsel in distress to a fighter. Theres a lot of romance out there and too much of it has yet to evolve from the basic trope of 'hero has to be the one to save the heroine from evil doers.' I liked her silent strength.

So why not 5 stars?
Doesnt have sex scenes. It's personal preference. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Really excited for Lavina and Ivans story!
I still don't like Joslyn XD

Safety: completely safe

-No cheating, no other people after meeting. No OW/OM drama.
-Duel virgins, first and only.
-Heroine was physically and sexually abused by her first husband
-No seperation

This was a fabulous story. Unlike the previous book, the heroine in this was amazing. This book feels more in line with the prequel book Sven the Collector. Book one Hollen the Soulless would have been great except for the heroine was just so TSTL and just rejected the poor hero Hollen throughout the book. He deserved so much better. This book however, had great characters, great development and a great love story. I can’t wait till the next comes out!

4 1/2 "Goddess" Stars!

Wow! Just when I thought I had the direction of this series all figured out, Ms. Day thew me for a big ol loop! This was the best kind of book surprise. So very clever. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 It has open this world up to endless possibilities! I really want to say how, but no spoilers from me!!

Both Erik and Tysha were dealing with some very serious self worth issues. I just wanted to both give them a big hug and slap them up side the head at the same time. Admittedly at times I was very frustrated. Especially with Tysha, but all the frustration was completely worth it in the end. Things have a way of coming around. Plus I absolutely loved them both.

This book captured my attention from the very start and never let go. It was heartbreaking, sweet, angsty, sensual, and overall triumphant. If you enjoy Fantasy romance, I highly recommend this series. I just marked my calendar for the next book in the series. I cannot wait to see what will happen on the mountain. Plus grumpy Ivan! Yes, please! Happy reading!

I breezed through this book. It was that wonderful.
I loved it more than the first book.

Eric and Tysha was a memorable couple. Both hurting and lost somehow finds their way to each other. Fate forces them to bond. And the journey that follows is filled with angst, emotion and adventure.

I absolutely adored the heroine. There were so many moments where my heart broke for her. And I’m so glad she got a wonderful man like Eric the tempered who cherished her and stood beside her when she wrote history.

The writing style was also fantastic and I loved the many secondary characters that was introduced. Story wise I’m very intrigued how this will move forward.

Safe👻..virgin H/h and absolutely recommended.

#1.) Hollen the Soulless: ★★★★
#2. ) Erik the Tempered: ★★★
#3.) Ivan the Bold: ★★★
#4.) Magnus the Vast: ★★★
#5.) Sigvard the Nameless: ★★★★

Blissfully continuing my way through this series! The impressive thing about this author's writing so far is that even though this book follows the heels of Hollen the Souless and all the setting/characters/motivations are the same, the characters themselves give the plot a bit of a twist. Yes, Erik in this book still needs to find himself a honey, but there's more to it than that that makes it a bit more complicated.

THE GOOD
1) Erik and Tysha are both sweet. Erik is clearly that beta male character, which means he's both large and strong and male but also quieter, restrained, and kind. Tysha is a likeable, quiet woman with the nerve and courage to stun. Just the sweetest, kindest people.

2) Volki the wyvern is a darling little thing.

THE BAD
1) When it comes to the overarching plot, this book comes in as an awkward filler. Book one set the stage as the origin of the cast and this book introduces the actual plot...albeit at the very, very end. This means that Erik and Tysha are all that carry the book for about 80%.

2) Secondary characters aren't as explored in this book compared to the first.

3) Missed the formulaic reprisal of the big bad Husband from the beginning of the book, but that's on me for wanting my predictable storyline.

OVERALL
I liked the spunk and action of the first book more, but hats off to the author for keeping the series fresh and new for each installment!

I was captivated with the original idea of the Dokiri Brides and with Denali Day's intriguing writing right from the first short prequel which I read, the first book left me wanting to read more and this, the 2nd book though different to the first is just as mesmerising. Erik the Tempered, was a good and noble man who was in the lowlands seeking a bride, as was the way of the Na Dokiri who dwelt on the mountain, serving as sentinels against the evil which would have taken over the lowlands. Tysha was a young woman, beaten and abused by her older drunk of a husband who was about to sell her into a whorehouse to pay for his gambling debts. She fled the horror of the whorehouse in shame not knowing where she fled to, but upon being pursued by a pack of wolves ends up being saved by Erik, and he in turn left unconscious and badly hurt. She straps him onto his gegatu, and flies with him to his home never once thinking of the danger she was in or the strange place she was going to, but putting this stranger's life first, in recognition of him saving her own threatened life. No unclaimed lowlander had ever been on the mountain in Bedmeg so Erik was forced to claim her, the one they had called she-devil, but after doing so he never looked back. Tysha who had never once had anyone respect her or love her was so broken, and had such little self confidence and self respect she could never believe that a man who appeared like a God in her eyes could ever want her. She desperately wanted to belong, her one wish had always been to have a family, a home and love but in her self denigration she was sure she would lose all that Erik and Bedmeg had become for her. Whilst Erik had a secret which was eating him from the inside out and feared that if anyone found out his secret he would be shunned by all. Turns out Tysha was stronger than she gave herself credit for and that she not only deserved Erik's love but the respect of all of Bedmeg thus changing their fate forever, through her courageous actions. I cannot express strongly enough how much I enjoyed reading this book, so much so that I once again read it in one sitting, and now regret that it came to the end. I am dying to read book 3 but unfortunately have to wait a bit before this book is published. This author's writing has captured my imagination and my heart through her portrayal of life in Bedmeg, the beautiful, strong and noble barbaric Na Dokiri men and their highly revered brides and now that evil is threatening their home these proud hunters have to change their attitudes if they are to survive, can they be men enough to do this?

***ARC provided in exchange for an honest review .

I read the book within a day and a half. The story is sweeping from beginning to end. It has adventures, romance, character developments and a lot of emotion. I really liked the characters. Eric was a real prince! A tormented and noble-minded hero ( beside his looks ) And Tysha matched him like a glove .
A brave woman with a free spirit and inner strength and at the same time sensitive and so human and real . Her character underwent an amazing development and it was lovely to read.
I also loved the details of the war and the Dokiri tribe's culture .
An exciting and touching book.

***Audiobook Review***

Wyverns, Adventure, Romance, interesting characters/creatures, captivating storyline, handsome barbarians and fierce brides. This is the Fan-Freaking-tastic series Denali Day created. Since I discovered Denali Day´s books, her Dokiri Bride series has become one of my favourites and I am once more fascinated by the world and character´s she has created.

Adding Shane East´s Solo narration to the mix makes this storytelling perfect. He absolutely OWNED this performance. Not sure how else to praise him as this solo narration and the quality of it is simply stunning. Each character is presented differently, and the raw emotion of storytelling is breathtaking. From creepy to swoony; from light female tones to a super deep growl, just a stunning aural experience.

I loved Eric´s story as much as I did Hollen´s, there are similarities but then again, it’s so different. Each story ties into the next and builds on it. Eric is Hollen´s younger brother and 2nd in command, he gets himself into a situation trying to rescue Tysha who is running from one evil into the next. Tysha has been told from a young age how unworthy and unappealing she is until her run-in with Eric. She is made his “hamma” which brings Eric´s tormented world into chaos as he is drawn to this strong beauty but also harbouring a secret that could destroy both of their futures. I loved the heroine in this, Tysha is just admirable. Her braveness and love for her gentle barbarian made me choke up a few times.

I am a fan of this series, it’s just beautiful and I cannot wait for Ivan´s story, which already gives us a few glimpses in this book of which direction his story will lead.

This is soooo good.

First of all I would recommend reading the series in order as previous couples appear and the information about their culture and history grow with each book but it's a couple per book in the series.

This series is based around the premise of the Hero's culture stealing their brides to win them over.
That said it contains no dubious consent or dark themes between the Hero and heroine.
It is a matter of honour to treat her well.
It is also not a shifter book though I would class it as a fantasy genre with a made up world and creatures.

It is well written. The author is fairly new but this is not reflected in her work.

We have lots of details about their culture and in this book we find out about the world around them, including any other life on or around the mountain and about the creatures they fly.

The Hero is a bit of a mystery, he obviously has an issue but it takes time to unfold as the story progresses.

The heroine, at the start is taken to the whorehouse by her older husband where he is going to sell her services to pay off his gambling debts.
Although things appear bleak for the heroine in the first chapter it doesn't get too dark as she flees and meets the Hero.
It felt a bit slow burn for a while but by halfway they are sorting things out between themselves.

These too are so darn sweet.
The heroine has no self worth due to her past experiences and the poor Hero is not very good at communicating so they have some misunderstandings.

The heroine also has great strength to her character, she is a hard worker.
The author manages to have each heroine strong in their own way.

No intimate scenes other than the Hero and heroine.
This book is a bit more detailed with intimacy but that said there are no actual sex scenes, it fades to black or refers to it as having happened, this makes it a fairly clean read.
Technically, the heroine is still married when she becomes involved with the Hero but as he was selling her to a whorehouse and the heroine mentions that her former husband will likely marry again, the marriage is sort of dissolved.

There is a small hint of other woman drama, the widow at the village but the Hero and her are just friends.

Lots of breadcrumbs dropped for future books in series, for the next book and his brothers.

HEA.

Enemy plot thread is laid out in this book and will continue through the series.

Offer of prologue book for free on author website at the time of writing this review.

Those who haven't read the first book in the series need not worry, it can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty.

A solid 4 stars from me:

★ for nice world building and for the beautiful writing;
★ for the romance. It was a little bit insta-lovish, but still very good;
★ for the super likable main characters.

We have Tysha

description

Oh! I loved her, she's strong, brave and kind (despite everything she has gone through), a real kick-ass heroine .

And Erik. Tough, angsty Dokiri warrior with a heart of gold.

description

(I think I've found another *imagine Chris Hemsworth as a main hero* book)

OH! Did I mention wyverns...well gegatu ?? Because my extra ★ goes to Voki!

description

My only problem was the first chapter and the whole idea of selling the wife to a brothel, it was a bit weird, tbh.

TW: graphic scene of childbirth.

The resistant husband

The female mc here has a quiet strength, and the understated nature is revealed and refined slowly and deliberately. Erik is foolish for a long time, keeping a secret, running from the past but thankfully not that long before he realizes she's fantastic. I struggled with her doormat state at the beginning, even if it was beaten into her, and understandable. But I loved the character arcs of both. Both to strength, vulnerability and each other.

Anxiety alert: there is monster peril, birthing peril , an embarrassing scene, and some baddies near the end, but all ends well, and as happy as it can when the baddies survive to fight in the next book.

I wondered how Denali Day could top Hollen the Soulless, the first and rather epic installment of her Dokiri Brides series, and boy, I wasn't disappointed!
I just LOVE it when an author writes within the same trope, and delivers something completely unique! I not see the twists and turns coming, and Denali has certainly earned my five solid stars given the swoonworthy romance between Erik and Tysha.
Oh, and did I mention the overarching (and sinister???) arc coming into play that has me salivating for Book 3? Bring on Ivan the Bold!

Okay, now I'm convinced that Denali Day is a sleep-depriving creature of evil and awesomeness.

This was the second night IN A ROW I stayed up to devour a book like some starving goblin who's lost complete control of their life. Time became meaningless. All that mattered was reading another chapter. Then another. Until, eyes burning, I finally admitted defeat and finished the book.

In short, this book was perfection.

I connected to Tysha immediately, and I wanted to chuck Erik's stupid butt off a cliff more than once until he finally grew some sense. And the ending. THAT ENDING!

It was everything I'd hoped.

Now off to book three. Fingers crossed I can put it down at a decent hour tonight, but I have about as much willpower with this series as I do when eating the free breadsticks at Olive Garden.

Ah, Erik is by far my favourite of the brothers and that's why I'm giving this five stars (even though it probable doesn't deserve it). <3 Our sweet, smart and self-sacrificing Erik. There will never be enough scenes with him. <3

This installment is my favourite of the series also because it managed to make a plot twist I hate into something I enjoyed. Usually my number one pet peeve is when a story wholly relies on a secret, a big bad secret that no one must know but the MC. It's tiring and usually the secret turns out to be dumb and easily fixed. Not in this book though! I felt genuinely a lot of anxiety and grief for Erik and his internal conflicts. I rooted for him almost immediately and was genuinely scared about the ending. (Spoiler alert: the Dokiri Brides series is big on HEA.)

Rooting for Tysha however took me a little time. I couldn't relate to her at all, but the author wrote her character beautifully and I really felt like I got to know a friend. I rooted for her, and amazingly also her relationship with Erik. I loved to see her courage and self-esteem grow. She annoyed me in the beginning, but I hardly remember anymore why.

However, this book should come with giant trigger warnings. I hate how violence against women is used as a plot device, but somehow it worked here and made sense. I couldn't even be that mad. What I was mad about though was the Dokiri tribe's patriarchy and underestimating of women. Erik can do no wrong though, always there to support the women and the underdog. Ah, he truly is a gem.

The book also gets its first glimpse of the dark developments to come. The story gets REAL. It's still a romance, but it starts to develop into a full-on fantasy story. 5/5 I'm a sucker for this book.

The writing and editing in the ARC version of the manuscript was clean and lyrical, with no typos that I found and beautifully constructed sentences. The world building in this novel was even better than that in the first novel in this series, with the mountains, under dwellers, and other Dokiri tribes coming to vivid life. The characterization was excellent, with both hero and heroine being complex, sympathetic individuals with strengths and weaknesses. The development of the romantic relationship between the hero and heroine was better in this second novel than the first, with simmering attraction and sexual tension sizzling away in the background, even though there were no on-page sexy times. The tension between these two characters made their romance much more satisfying for this reader. The plot and pacing were exciting and quick, meaning I flew through reading this novel. There was little angst and very high stakes in this novel, which is one of my preferred narrative structures for a romance novel. This novel used the Accidental Bride trope. The world building, plot, and pacing were all five stars in this novel. The characterization and development of the romantic relationship were also five stars in this novel. I gave this novel a combined score of five stars, therefore. This novel was significantly better than the first novel in this series, which was already really good. This novel ends on a Happy Ever After ending instead of a cliffhanger, which is a big plus. I recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys fantasy novels or romance novels. This novel has strong cross-genre appeal, in my opinion. I look forward to reading the next novel in this series when it releases, and I will definitely buy myself a keeper copy of this novel.

I've started this review over several times, nothing seems to come out right when I try to get my thoughts out on this computer keyboard.

Erik and Tysha aren't your average love story (but then again, Denali manages to make all her couples unique and exciting). I won't rehash the story because you can read the book for that, also other reviewers have given a plot summary, but I want to tell you how I felt about the characters.

Tysha is a broken woman, beat down and convinced that she's unworthy and I think a lot of us deal with those feelings in some way or another. The way that she overcomes her own misgivings about herself to become a literal kick butt heroine who does what no woman before her has done, was inspiring to me. We read books to escape, to become the characters and live vicariously through them and while I didn't want to be Tysha for the first part of the book, I definitely wanted to be her in the second part.

Erik, sweet secret-keeper Erik. I just want to hug him. He shoulders a burden alone and I was heartbroken when he finally shared what it was, but he's na Dokiri. Nothing will keep him down for long and the way he goes to bat for his Hamma will have you swooning and wishing you were taken away on the back if a Gegatu yourself to chilly climates and a cozy, fur covered bok.

TL;DR: I was happy, heartbroken, swoony and ecstatic throughout this book.

This sweet fantasy romance won't let you down. Read it, read all of them. Denali is a master of words and I will read all the ones she writes. Even her grocery list.

Although I generally enjoyed 'Hollen the Soulless' I didn't love it, but I recognized that the series had mega potential going forward and so decided to have faith and continue on. I'm glad I did, because I flew through 'Erik the Tempered' and enjoyed it much more.
First and foremost... that secret! I never would have guessed it. It was done so well, and even through the frustration of Erik constantly denying Tysha, once he reveals his reasonings... well, it makes complete sense. It was a definite 'oh shit' moment for me.
Speaking of Tysha... what a woman! I loved her. Her character development was phenomenal and I was so happy to see her blossom and develop her sense of self worth after years and years of abuse and suppression.
The layers of history, tradition, world building and lore that we were introduced to in 'Hollen the Soulless' are peeled back even further in the second installment and are just as, if not more, fascinating as we delve deeper into it. I can't wait to see the direction this author takes us in as the series continues.
Upon reading reviews of these books I keep seeing the phrase 'new writer' or 'hasn't been around long' when speaking of Denali Day and I would just like to put it out there that the writing style is as tight and pleasing as any seasoned author and something that I genuinely enjoy and find enhances the book incredibly. The girls got talent, pure and simple.
Ivan's story is next... and I've already downloaded it. Although I have to admit I'm eagerly awaiting Magnus' (must be the beef cake, alpha male thing he's got going on?)

I love the Dokiri and their brides. The world Denali Day has created is interesting, at times brutal, at times kind and caring, but always just a subtle amount of steam. Eric rescues a woman from a pack of wolves and angry men and she ends up saving his life. Tysha is running from her abusive husband that just tried to sell her to a whorehouse to pay off his gambling debts, when Eric comes to her rescue and is wounded. She gets him on his gegatu, climbs on, and hope it knows the way home. Once there, Eric recovers and to protect Tysha, he claims her, but he has a secret that is keeping him from feeling anything for her. The storyline is so compelling and really a surprise I didn't see coming. Eric and Tysha are well written, have great chemistry, both have their secrets that come to light. Page turner from start to finish, another great read. Can't wait for the next brothers story.
I received an ARC and this is my honest review.

5 Fan-Freaking-Tastic Stars!!!

I don’t even know where to begin. I absolutely loved this story, and I didn’t want it to end. It made me feel just about every emotion and kept me so invested from the very being. There were things I didn’t see coming which is rare for me and I thoroughly enjoyed. I loved Erik and Tysha, but Tysha really stole the show for me. Dealing with feelings of worthlessness and feeling like you need to work extra hard to be excepted really made her a relatable character. I was blown away by how she was able find strength and risk her life to save others, and still be so humble. She had amazing character growth, and she’s definitely one of my favorite h’s of the year. Erik was so loyal and worked hard for his people. He really made you feel for him and his difficult situation. Erik and Tysha’ romance was so touching and had incredible chemistry. Their willingness to be so self sacrificing for each other really had me rooting for them as a couple. I loved how their story is concluded and how they are able to earn their places among the Dokiri people permanently. Ms. Day had really out done herself with this one and I don’t know how she’ll top it. I can’t wait to dive into Ivan’s story. This was an amazing book to end the year with that will definitely be on my reread list. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!!!

This is the third Denali Day book I’ve read, and I have to say that Tysha is my favorite lead so far! I really enjoyed how Tysha was just so down to earth, and even calm in a way. She didn’t skirt around issues; she faced them head-on. In fact I think Tysha brought out these same qualities in Erik as well.

There’s more good things I want to say, but it’s hard without giving anything away! This was such an easy book to enjoy; I read it in about three days. If you love romance with a touch of fantasy, give Erik the Tempered a read!

What an incredible series this is turning out to be! I loved the prequel and Hollen, but Ms. Day has really hit her stride with Erik the Tempered. The story starts out rather bleak for our heroine, but boy does she find her courage in a big way! As with the previous books, the world building is excellent and the intensifying chemistry between the H and h was handled beautifully ❤️ Some big surprises revealed in this novel, and a very interesting plot twist! I can’t wait to see what develops in the next books!

Infestation problem

Standing up for yourself changes everything. Tysha is amazing. She is kinda that silent but lethal personality. Erik is not silent but most definitely lethal. He also cares for those that can't in an understated way. They are a literal accident
This fantastical world is amazingly built with creatures and characters beyond my imagination.
On to oversee the next brothers adventure!

Erik and his secret made me cry.

I really enjoying these characters and their stories. The writing in this series is really good thus far, Denali Day has proven that she can provoke a wide variety of emotions from me and keep me sucked into the overall storyline at the same time. I look forward to the next book.
