Magnus the Vast

Rate this book
She’d willingly march into hell...just not with him.

Fiercely loyal to her country, Nadine will do whatever it takes to destroy the ancient evil threatening her world. Anything. Except allow a wild savage to put his mark on her.

Plagued by survivor’s guilt, Magnus the Vast vows to do whatever it takes to bring home the friend he left behind. Claiming the beautiful hellcat who wants his head is a convenient bonus. One he won’t let her get out of.

Bound together, Nadine and Magnus must rely on one another to complete their mission and save their people. Easier said than done for the woman-warrior who thinks her new ally a domineering brute, and the sly barbarian who is all too happy to play the part.

They’ll walk into the pit of the earth, and they’ll do it together—or they may never walk out.

When Denali Day was trying to figure out “what to be when she grew up” she noticed all her written stories featured a scene where the beautiful heroine patched up the wounds of a gallant hero. So she decided to become a nurse. Twelve years and two degrees later, she realized all she ever really wanted was to be a writer.

Now she lives in the midwest with her adoring husband, a real life gallant hero, and their two wicked goblins (children). When she isn’t writing she’s reading and when she’s not doing either of those things she’s probably plundering the fridge for something she can smother in whipped cream.

This series is both frustrating and engaging as hell.

The world building and the action are top notch!!! The romance however is ...ugh! Angst always trumps any romance. Although the chemistry between the H and h is awesome, the heat index is negative zero!!

I have no idea why this series says "Shane East" narrates. It should be "Steve West" since that's the name the narrator uses for non-erotic romances.

4 "Stubborn" Stars!

Ah! This series! I have fallen down the Dokiri Brides rabbit whole. I absolutely love this world. It's filled with so much intense peril and passion.

Magnus, Magnus, Magnus. The lovable fun lighthearted giant of a man. Or I should say Dokiri Warrior. That was the way everyone thought of him. But there was so much more to him than his vast size and jovial personality. Magnus was so passionate and loved deeper than the ocean. "Tears of a clown" was a perfect way to sum him up.

I confess, Nadine had to really grow on me. But grow on me, she did. Nadine had a six foot deep stone fortress build around her heart. Harsh was very much an understatement of how I would describe her for most of the book. But the more her past story was revealed, the more I understood her. She was a true warrior.

These two had to fight hard to get to their "after". Meanwhile more and more dangerous threats to the Dokori and lowlanders are being revealed.

I cannot wait for Sigvard's book! I have wanted his story since Hollen's story. The youngest brother that was once so eager to prove himself and claim his bride was blindsided by tragedy that changed him so dramatically. Oh!! It's gone be good! Happy reading!

Her savage, his kandiri.

Loved this next book in the series. These two characters have so much buried beneath the surface and so much hurt to bear. Their journey is explosive, combative, filled with betrayal, longing to be loved and accepted, and most importantly wanted to be whole.

Couldn’t put the book down. So much goes on and I honestly can’t wait for more. Really had hoped to see more of Nadine with the wyverns. So hopefully we get more of her later in the series. Also I would like to see her and her sister talk now after what Magnus has taught Nadine of the ‘after’ in life.

This is one of my favorite fantasy series and this book did not disappoint. It was my second favorite in the entire series after Hollen.

In this book we are following the story of Magnus and Nadine. Magnus is a giant who seems to always be laughing and non-serious while still very much hurting over what happened to his best friend in the last book. Nadine is a super tough badass who is determined to remain independent and in control of her own life. The interaction between the two characters is what really makes this book great.

The author's world building in the entire series is one of the reasons I love this series so much and the continued description of the world in this book was also really good. The setting for this book was very different from the previous ones because they have to journey under the mountain on their mission. The sense of tension and dread I felt when they were all stuck underground was very visceral.

Over all I loved this book and would recommend the entire series. I can't wait for the next one!

I love this series, I truly do. But the most annoying thing about most of these books, is the women resisting these guys and fighting to go back to their miserable lives. They come from terrible circumstances, where they are abused, tortured, used and treated like they are worthless. They have to fight to stay alive. But these guys swoop in to offer something far better and they refuse. While I like that our heroine is a badass in this one, her constant fight against Magnus was tiring. It’s still a great story/world. Magnus is just amazing. I can’t wait for the next and final book!

Magnus. Nadine. MAGNUS

This brute, I cannot get enough of him! His story is so much more complex than that of his brothers. Even the bride he claims is more complex. Their story is of true hope and devotion. Magnus wants nothing more than to save his friend, but then Nadine enters with her take-no-prisoners attitude and general will, Magnus knows there is no other woman for him. Even better, now he has a reason to bond her to him.

Nadine struggles throughout the book with the masculinity that surrounds her. Which paints her as a very relatable character. Although she's tough, bitter, and angry she eventually realizes that everything she's worked towards is nothing but a glimmer of the glory she hoped it would be.

Their two worlds collide and they find themselves faced with indecision and betrayal, where better to find comfort than in each others arms?

I loved this story, I appreciated Denali giving these characters real flaws and real solutions. Now I can't wait to read my baby Sigvard's story!

ALSO! THANK YOU Denali for an advanced copy! Trust me friends, you don't want to miss this one!

This continues to be a very consistent series. Each book flows into the next, yet stands completely alone. The personalities and situations found are individual to each story.

The story of Magnus and Nadiri is no less romantic for it being a lot more antagonistic. Each character is broken in their own way and watching them stitch each other back together is amazing.

The overarching plot line has ramped up and feels ready to burst in a grand finale for Sigvard. This is a great set up to the final story in this arc.

Well, well, well.

Nice try, but you can't make me stay up four nights in a row if I finished the entire book BEFORE BED!

Mwahahahaha.

I feel like I deserve an adulting sticker for this achievement.

Anyway, I've been dying to get to this story since Magnus is one of my all time favs in this series. Let me put it to you this way. There was a hugely anticipated release today for a book that I've been waiting months to get my hands on (hint: it rhymes with a clown of builded cones).

I read this one instead.

Moving onto Magnus here... He's just a big, lovable goofball. If this were set in present day America, he'd be the biggest baddest biker dude with a neck tattoo and a sidecar for his beloved Yorkshire terrier. Nadine is amazing, too. I love that we finally get a bride who can hold her own with the boys, yet her past is just as rich and complex as the rest.

Guys. GUYS! The chemistry was flying with this one.

Easily my second favorite of the series (so far).

The only downside is that their happily ever after is overshadowed by the imminent end of the world and I will literally (probably) die if I don't get the next book, stat.

Phenomenal!
This story boasts interesting and complicated main characters. They are litteral opposites in everything except where violence is concerned. And yet I gorged on the banter and small slips of their masks in this book. I simply could not get enough. I was so excited when I learned Nadine would be a main character in this book. She is so strong, brave, and so dang loyal. She has so much fire, that I couldn't wait to see what lay beneath.
Magnus was always the playful one, not a serious bone in his body. Then his childhood friend was taken and guilt began to plague him. He frustrated me a but sometimes because he didn't quite pick up Nadine's underlying message or sometimes he simply didn't admit the whole truth. Something she needed from him.
This series is one I recommend wholeheartedly. I am so glad I stumbled across it and discovered the Dokiri world.

Nadine is an Ebronian Captain, fierce, tried and tested and as hard as steel, she intends defending her country from the threat of the Veligiri, the soul eaters. She is also the sister of the Dokiri bride, Lavinia, who had been stolen from her at the young age of ten leaving her on her own to survive the brutalities of life. Magnus is also set to defend Bedmeg his mountain home from those threatening it and to bring back the friend he had lost to the monsters below ground, fuelled by his self blame. An alliance needed to be forged between the underlanders, those of the desert and those of the sky and Magnus was all set to forge this alliance however Nadine was damned if she would let him mark her as his hamma. She considered him a savage barbarian and a dog and would fight Magnus all the way, however the more spirit Nadine showed the more Magnus' respect for her grew and his lust followed. However even though Magnus was a giant he was a gentle giant and wanted to win Nadine through kindness and love but she made every meeting they had into a battle as was her way. She carried the Eye of Azareal which was the talisman they needed to defeat the Veligiri and under the mountain to the heart of the earth they travelled together with a team of Ebronians who she commanded and the Horde King of the Nozvarak and his two warriors. There was little trust between the groups however betrayal came from their own and it cut Nadine deeply. I love the series and every woman taken as hamma has given us her own story but Nadine's is a very powerful one and Magnus and her make an awesome couple, one that deserves one another. I missed reading about Bedmeg this time around and hope that the problem is resolved and we get to read more about the lovely home of the Dokiri up in the sky with their Gegatu!

Magnus The Vast.

She’d willingly march into hell . . . just not with him.

I discovered the Dokiri Brides earlier last year and as soon as I read the first few pages I fell in love with the unique world and characters - the series instantly became a favorite of mine.

Picking up right where book three left off we follow Magnus and Nadine as they travel deep under the mountain to hopefully put a stop to the Soul Thieves and protect both their worlds.

Just like in the previous books the authors world building is stunning and makes you feel like you’ve stepped through the pages and are a part of the story itself.

One of my favorite things about this book is how opposite the main characters are - you have Magnus who is this giant of a man (even by Dokiri standards) who although is a badass warrior is soft and caring and willing to do anything to protect his people and try and save his best friend from the Soul Thieves and then you have Nadine a strong, no nonsense, life isn’t carefree, warrior woman who’s had her struggles but is willing to do anything to bring honor to her family name - even if it means binding herself to one of the Barbarian, wyvern riding savages that stole her sister away years before.

Thank you so much to the author for sending me an arc of Magnus The Vast - its already one of my favorite reads of the year and I cannot wait to add the paperback to my shelf right next to the rest of the Dokiri Brides.

Good story.
Strong heroine.
Bit enemies to lovers troupe.
They form an alliance to beat a common enemy.
Other man drama. Heroine has a close friend who is a fellow soldier and doesn't realize he would like more.
No intimate scenes other than the Hero and heroine.
Neither are virgins.
The Hero's brief experience is touched on that happened in previous book.
It would make sense to read the series in order as a couple per book but enemy thread runs through series and develops through each book.
No much detail in intimate scenes.

Spoiler.

I did feel although they did gain more knowledge of their enemy, they didn't actually accomplish much infact they caused a few issues with their actions in this book.

HFN.

Breadcrumbs dropped for future books in series.
Previous couples don't really feature as couples, his brothers pop up from time to time.

ARC.

The Dokiri Brides series is a superb world and while Magnus the Vast can be read as a stand-alone, to fully appreciate the characters and the world-building you'll enjoy the previous books in this series.

Magnus and Nadine are diametric opposites, but they are perfect for each other (eventually!). While Magnus is superficially fun and jovial -when his best friend needs to be rescued, hidden depths are revealed and he is superb - determined and unstoppable. Nadine's character was a slower reveal and initially harder for me to like, but her stubbornness & tenacity won me over. Watching the two of them together transition from enemies to lovers: worth the wait. I love this couple!

I received an ARC of this novel, AND pre-ordered this and am voluntarily leaving a review.

From the moment Magnus noticed Nadine at Lapor gates , I waited to read the book about them. I’m so happy that I wasn’t disappointed . It was my favorite book in the series so far.
Nadine and Magnus were characters who could have been total stereotypes - Magnus - a giant with a perpetual smile, a cocky bastard warrior with a good heart , and Nadine - a tough female warrior, badass, a hard nut to crack . They were all that , yes , but SO MUCH MORE !!!! Each of them had a sack of heavy baggage that they carried with them from the past and beneath the tough facade hid two beautiful souls who together, after a difficult, arduous and tense journey, managed to reach the inner truth and their peace of mind they deserved.
I really liked their character’s slow development during the story. It was very believable
I loved that everything took time and effort and not everything was resolved right away. There was progress but also retreat . Very genuine and touching writing that made me understand, believe and fall in love with them both. ( but especially Nadin )
The plot was great ! I really, really LOVE travel stories and adventures in changing landscapes.
The journey to accomplish the dangerous task was excellent - Fast pace , wonderful imagination, thrilling adventures that were mixed with matters of honor, loyalty, trust issues in allies and ties forged while a difficulty that only such a journey could summon .
Thank you Denali for the sweeping writing and for the passages that were so beautiful that it touched my heart (the passage with the Sand Palace was just beautiful and moving )
I finished the book in one breath. And I'm already waiting to see what happens next to this cursed mountain.

I was waiting to read this book and it didn't disappoint. This book was plot-heavy and continued with the mission to defeat the Soul Thieves. We follow Magnus and Nadine this time and their stubbornness did not disappoint. I did like their dynamic and how Nadine became as strong as she is. I did wish for more chances for both Magnus and Nadine to really build on their connection, but with everything crazy going on. I can understand the pressure they were facing. Can't wait to read Sigvard's story.

**Note: I received an ARC of Magnus the Vast for an honest review**

I want to begin by saying I have loved every book in this series and had extremely high expectations for this one. It did not disappoint in the least. We follow the story of Magnus and his bride, Nadine. She is claimed out of necessity for their current situation with the Soul Eaters, but this doesn’t make her go easy on poor Magnus!

As they embark on their adventure together, they have to learn to adapt to one another or the relationship will fall apart. When I say the chemistry is off the charts, I mean it 100%.

This new installment of the Dokiri Brides reminds me a lot of why I adored Hollen so much! I can’t wait for the next book!

Recommended for readers that love high action, battles, enemies to lovers, and viking-like heroes!

Magnus is my fav man of them all. I love his sarcastic banter and his humor. I love that he is a big teddy bear yet super sensitive and caring. He reminds me of Cassian and I love it. I devoured this book. Nadine took a little for me to really like but once I did I loved her. Their relationship is amazing and they match each other perfectly. I cannot wait for more in this series.

Can I just say that I may love Hollen the Soulless but Magnus really gave him a run for his money.

Denali does an exceptional job creating this world of barbarians who live on the mountain. And when she added in the tension of an angry, broken woman like Nadine into the mix I knew this was going to be good.

Nadine is the hellcat that Magnus has always claimed her to be and I loved her spirit. Her quick jibes at Magnus, Magnus’s smart remarks, it was a whirlwind of emotions.

And chapter 20? 😅 That’s all I’ll say.

This is such an exciting world to be completely consumed by and I’m so impatient to read more.

I never want this series to end!

Each story in the Dokiri Brides series is unique. Rather than follow a template, the author gives us a truly singular adventure and romance in each book. Though the heroes of the stories are siblings, each brother follows his own particular path.

In this fourth installment of the series, the Dokiri team with the Ebronians and the Nozverak to defeat the Soul Thieves. Dokiri Magnus and Ebronian Nadine ally themselves with a contingent of Ebronian soldiers and a small group of Nozverak, with the purpose of inflitrating the Soul Thieves base to free the possessed beings that include Magnus’ friend.

From the beginning, there is nothing but conflict among all three factions – Dokiri, Ebronian and Nozverak. I kept thinking, the mission is doomed. Something has to happen to bring them together. And just when you think it might happen, something else happens to set them at each other.

Parallel to the conflict among the mission forces, Magnus and Nadine have their own battle raging. Nadine says she wants nothing to do with Magnus and they will never see each other again when the mission is ended. Magnus is convinced she wants him. The intractable soldier and the obstinate barbarian seemed destined to butt heads while they grow to admire each other and learn from each other. This is a delightful couple. When I say delightful, I mean entertaining.

In the story, there were many times that it seemed the mission had failed and that death or enslavement was impending. So – nail-biting moments. But underlying the tension is the romance. Nadine and Magnus relationship is not only key to the romance, but also to the mission.

About the series: When I reviewed the first book in this series, Holland the Soulless, I noted that I didn’t like the fact that the heroine was abducted. I am please that the author has found alternative ways to get couples together in subsequent books in this series. It should be noted, that among the Dokiri, consent is critical (even after abduction). And when it happens, off-the-page sex means the heat level is quite mild, but sensual enough to strengthen the couple’s commitment to each other in the reader’s mind.

In 2020, the Dokiri Brides series was one of my favorite new series. With each book, I find a new hero to fall for and a new heroine to cheer for. I recommend you read the entire series! You will enjoy Magnus the Vast best after reading the first three books.

Many thanks to the author who provided a copy of her book in exchange for my honest review.

(Mostly Spoiler-Free.)

If you haven't read the first 4 books in the Dokiri Brides series check them out first!

Reading Order:

Sven the Collector
Hollen the Soulless
Erik the Tempered
Ivan the Bold
Magnus the Vast

I know I called Ivan the Bold a Second Chance Romance Dokiri style, because of Lavinia's prior marriage. But honestly, I felt like that also applied to Magnus the Vast. Neither of the characters had been married before, but it still felt like they both got a second chance at actually living. Another lesson for how seemingly happy and successful people also have stories going on under the surface and wounds they need to overcome to really reclaim their lives instead of just existing.

Magnus and Nadine are special, to say the least. They are people with a matching crass sense of humor that makes for some nice humorous bits with this dramatic story of attempting to save their worlds while facing betrayals and soul-crushing odds.
Magnus got to show every side of his personality, right alongside Nadine. These were by NO means flat characters and much like the books before/couples prior, they were not lacking in intensity and deepening the story of the world around them.

These are not people who have had smooth, easy lives, and that shows in the way that they speak to each other and to other characters, mainly in reference to their anger.
A Note for Sensitive Readers/Possible Triggers: There are some completely consensual matches between the lead characters, but as they are people who respect strength, I feel like they are handled nicely.

There wasn't too much involvement from our regular Dokiri people, but believe me, there's a reason! The gegatu (wyverns) aren't as present, but you get a fun hint of how the Dokiri men are accepting, even encouraging, the change around them for their women. :) And plenty of action with the veligiri and I'm currently a huge fan of the Nozverak (and can't say I would be opposed to a spin-off romance or two).

And for all the Sigvard lovers...he's next! Read all of Magnus, and then don't skip the epilogue! You will not be disappointed. I see a pre-order purchase in my future. :) :)

I found this book utterly delightful. Magnus was indomitable in the pursuit of his bride. Nadine has been the most difficult woman in this series for her Dokiri hubby to win over. But Magnus just never gave up! And, of course, he eventually won over his prickly, fearsome bride with his courageousness and selflessness. Because that’s what these incredible Dokiri men do!

I deeply enjoyed Magnus’s character. I loved how this happy-go-lucky, good-humored, jocular Dokiri was paired with the fiercest, most reticent, and guarded woman possible. There were so many life-threatening situations in this novel in which Magnus rescued either Nadine or Nadine’s friend, that of course she had to soften up to him. Perhaps the only way Magnus could have won her over was through showing her his prowess as a warrior, which he certainly did a lot of. Because Nadine is more warrior than woman her husband’s warrior skills deeply appeal to her.

I also loved this book because Magnus teaches Nadine how to be human and how to feel. He breaches the walls of her heart and softens her, helping her to become a better version of herself. I read another review questioning why some of the women in these books resist becoming Dokiri brides after living such miserable lives. It’s because it’s all they’ve known and they don’t believe that they deserve anything better. Magnus had to prove his worth to Nadine, and in doing so had to show Nadine her true worth.

I do kind of wish that he could have kidnapped her in the good old-fashioned Dokiri way. I’m not sure if he had taken her to be his bride in the conventional way of his people how she would have warmed up to him. But, because of the circumstances, of course he could not.
In any, case, I really enjoyed this novel. I loved the action-packed thrilling adventures that these two had together. My only complaint is that the end scene between Magnus and Nadine was not longer. I was so curious to know where Magnus was going to take her!
Sigvard the Nameless, the conclusion to this heart-warming, captive-bride series comes out July 29, 2021. I don’t know how I can wait so long!

Magnus the Vast by Denali Day
She’d willingly march into hell… just not with him. After seeing her sister with her Na Dokiri husband and learning about her sister’s life. Nadine isn’t too thrilled at the idea of having to work with the same people who stole her sister from her, who stole everything from her. Now she has to deal with being bonded with one of them just to complete a mission to save her people, and to an arrogant savage no less. Nadine will not submit to this savage; she is a Captain and has been through worse things than this brute can image. She can overcome this, but can her heart? Also can Savage survive Nadine?
~~~~~~~~~
Okay Magnus is my favorite now out of all the brothers. The sarcasm, the way Nadine and Magnus interact with each other is just the best in the world and I just couldn’t stop laughing! But it also was so serious at the times when it needed to be and it made me cry or made me think. These two were absolutely perfect together; the way the relationship was written was just so creative. Day’s creativity and skill is really different in each book. It’s amazing to see her go between different writing styles especially when she deals with different personalities in the brothers and their wives. Then building the different realms and different scenes; like under the mountain, along with the different types of creatures that are featured on and under the mountain.
Nadine was a supreme Hellcat and is not afraid to show it and take anyone on that challenges her! She’s the type of woman to make you on her good side and don’t want to piss her off. Life has made her who she is; she will let you in on her own accord or use you to her wishes.
Denali went all in with Magnus and Nadine; like this was spectacular. I just can’t get over how the two of them just fit so perfectly together. The best couple out of all the brothers so far; take there is one brother left. I hope to see more of these two in the next book. But I also can’t wait to see how Denali does the last brother!
5 Fantastic Stars!!!
Even as we get to know and experience different couples in this series it still follows an over all theme that gets more and more exciting, and addictive as it unfolds. Their journey to the depths of the mountain had everything I loved: unpredictability, unlikely comrade, and super creepy creatures.
At first I didn’t care for Nadine. Her constant refusal to be won over despite every amazing thing Magnus did, and her accusing the wrong people for the lack of respect because she was a woman made it hard for me to connect with her. But learning of her past and seeing her in action made me a fan. She’s a strong and brave woman who put most of the men to shame. Magnus was wonderful! He was soooo patient with Nadine, and so self sacrificing. His lightheartedness and Nadines toughness really complemented each other and made me love them as a couple. This story was everything I’ve come to expect from this author. It was incredible, exciting and kept me at the edge of my seat. I literally cannot wait for Sigvard’s story!!!
I finished reading Magnus the Vast, by Denali Day, and thoroughly enjoyed it. The whole series has been thought-provoking and this installment did not disappoint. At first glance, the Ebronians in the novel assume the Dokiri men are Neanderthal-like savages, but the reader soon finds out that the Dokiri are loyal, loving, brave, organized, and are willing to die for an important cause. The Ebronians think they are far more superior and advanced when compared to the Dokiri. As the Ebronian army joins with the Dokiri to fight an unseen menace locked in the ice caves near Bedmeg, Nadine Pajel, a fierce warrior-woman, leads the Ebronian army and allays their fears of trust while working with the Dokiri. Will they be successful in their fight against evil to save their people?
Magnus and Nadine lead their groups on a journey of dangerous challenges on the way to complete their task, while their inner selves experience self-realization every step of the way. Will their experiences bring them closer together or fragment their hearts?
I loved this installment of the Dokiri brides saga. Magnus and Nadine might be my favorite couple after Hollen and Joselyn. I really am a sucker for an enemies to lovers trope and I loved Nadine’s conflict. The inner turmoil that she has to overcome in order to let Magnus in and receive his love really pulled at my heartstrings. I also love how this book advances the plot of the series while still giving us a compelling love story. My only complaint and it’s a small complain is that I wish the epilogue had been about Magnus and Nadine. Showing us more of them interacting together being happy because I really felt like we didn’t get enough of that. But I do understand what the author was doing in setting up for the next book in the series.
Filled with betrayal and deception, Magnus and Nadine's story is neither easy or straight forward. The damage caused by abandonment, the hurt caused by failure and the harm caused by mistrust follows them through every action. The gentle giant Magnus wants to bring his friend back from the abyss. Nadine wants to prove that her independence is only one part of her capability. But danger follows their journey to the underworld. Will they survive the challenges they face? Will Magnus be able to convince her of his love? Will Nadine recognize that being alone only leads to loneliness?
👏🏻👍🏻This book truly absorbs you in a richly crafted world with complex characters and plenty of action. I felt like I was watching a movie and that’s one of the best feelings while reading a book (in my humble opinion). Nadine is a fierce female character who I loved cheering on, and I think is a refreshing addition to the Dokiri Brides series. Magnus’s character development was endearing to read about, but I’m still in love with his older brother, Hollen lol. The author also has this way of writing touching exchanges between these tough characters that make you melt a little.🥰 I really enjoyed reading this book, but would like to see more sides and emotions to the characters. This book has me even more excited for the next book, and I’m loving getting to know more characters and their diverse backgrounds.
Magnificent
This series. It captured my attention and my heart quickly. I love the world Denali has created. I love how complex the characters are and the paths they take that change their lives for the better. Oh, but the trials they face. The stories have depth and grit and are profoundly beautiful. I cannot wait for the next book: a continuation in this phenomenal, heart pounding, beautifully written story.
Please keep writing!
