Blood Magic #0.5

Witches Get Stitches

Rate this book
Hermione meets Harry Dresden.

Jax is the only girl wizard in the Copperfield magic academy … will she ever fit in?

And with the kind of sharp wit and potent power she possesses, does she even want to?

Jax has a troubled past and an uncertain future, and the rotten witch coven at the Copperfield Institute won’t let her forget it. Isadora Crowe—spiteful, smug Izzy—in particular, is making her life hell.
Luckily, she has a super smart dwarf on her side and an unmatched ability to sling potent spells.
When the day dawns for the National Magical Archery Championship, Jax realises that the witches are the least of her problems.

Will Jax survive the battle? It’s not looking likely … although she does have a knack for surprising people.

What reviewers are saying about the BLOOD MAGIC series:

★★★★★  “This is a sizzling hot book. The characters are great, the plot races and the writing is great. Humour, magic, crossbows, ferrets, mysterious men – this book has it all. I can’t wait for the rest of the books in this series.” - Amazon reviewer

★★★★★  “The main character, Jax, is like if Gin Blanco (of Jennifer Estep’s Elemental Assassins series) and Harry Dresdan (of Jim Butcher’s The Dresdan Files series) had a baby. That is high praise cuz I love Gin and Harry dearly. The HighFire Crown built a world of magic, mythology and mayhem. I am super excited for the next books in the series!” - Jenny B.

★★★★★  “Witty, gripping, and leaves you wanting the next book. I found myself laughing often and unable to put it down for long.” - Amazon reviewer

This is the second book I’ve read/listened to by these authors together, and the eleventh book by JT Lawrence. This story is an expansion of recollections by Jax we are privy to in Highfire Crown.
The publisher’s summary is good so I won’t expand much. It’s in this book however Jax is given the suggestion to become a detective.

This is the eighth book I’ve listened to by this narrator ( Roshina Ratham ) and I would listen to another. She does well bringing life to the stories she narrates. She brings out the tone of the book.

There are no explicit sex scenes, excessive violence or swearing.

There will always be "mean girls" they pick on those they preceive weak and "believe"
it is their "right" and "Duty" to make their life at school miserable. But you can only push them so far. As an old saying goes" even the worm will turn". Now what if the "unworthy outcast" has a talent that is controlled by her anger and strong emotions, she has learned to channel them into magic? What if her talent wins a contest that put Your school in first place? What do you think of her now?

Jax has had a rough life. And the mean girls make it rougher. But adversity empowers her. Delightful introduction.

Action-packed. Easy-to-read. Entertaining. Great world building. Haunting. Informative. Inspirational. Page-turner. Scary. Tragic. Twisted. Unpredictable. Wonderful characters.

Enjoyable read

I picked up this short story on a whim, and I absolutely loved it. The main characters struggle with school i can relate with, except no magic. And the yearn of the main character to get justice is relatable, as I'd pursue similarly to what she wants to do.

I don't normally give little short stories like this 5 stars but I had to for this book. It's full of fun, the girl's anger, and her beginning to harness that anger for good.

Really great book. Enjoyed reading it before I start the series. Interesting take on wizards and gender roles.

Great for YA and up. As I'm one of the 'and up's..

I love the Blood Magic series by JT Lawrence and MJ Kraus - if you haven’t read or listened to that yet I highly recommend it. It’s an awesome action-packed adult urban fantasy adventure set in Johannesburg with plenty of twists and turn and a cast of fabulous characters.
Witches Get Stitches is a short prequel that takes us back into the teenage years of the main character - a lovely little gem for fans of the series and very poignant if you know what happens later.
The narration by Roshina Ratnam is perfect as ever.

This is just a quick listen that serves to provide a bit more background to some of the characters that feature in the main books in this series, it is interesting to see some of the things that shape the future of these character after having first encountered the older version in the main series.

The narrator delivers another strong performance with these characters and helps to enhance the overall enjoyment of the book.

Overall, not essential to the main series, but still an enjoyable listen in it's own right.

This is a fun introduction into JT Lawrence's Blood Magic series, although it can be listened to as a standalone. There are some strong female characters in this story, of a variety of age groups, ethnicities and backgrounds, which is great to see in a book of any genre - fantasy or otherwise.

The main character battles with and overcomes challenges that are super-realistic, like bullying. Without giving too much away in terms of a spoiler, there is a progression in Jacqueline's character that moves well in pace with the story, and she develops in positive but realistic ways.

As always, I enjoyed Roshina Ratnam's take on this short story. Her voice and skill set are a good match for JT's material and I'm excited to see what else they have in store for us!

Introduction to Jacquelyn (Jax) Knight, future paranormal investigator of Johannesburg. The locale is quite different; South Africa, which does explain the light British accent. We find Jax at the Copperfield Magic Academy where she is studying the abilities of her class; a wizard who specializes in Blood Magic. Female wizards are quite rare and Jax pays for her parents’ heredity in peer abuse. Jax is a strong-willed, competent female character who has a clear dislike for vampires. This volume is a short novella. Three.point.five for a quick and witty start. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

I received this book for free. I am voluntarily posting this review and all opinions expressed herein are my own.

This is a quick introduction to the Blood Magic series. Jax, our MC, is the only girl at a school full of wizards. It was an interesting start - I especially liked the location - South Africa. It's very quick and ends somewhat abruptly.

The narrator, Roshina Ratnam, is great - she has a slight British accent. It was very enjoyable to listen to her narration.

Very quick read

This quick read was pretty good. Jax is an orphan, her parents were killed by a vampire when she was young. She is also a wizard, not a witch. Because of these two facts, she doesn't have many friends.

Again, this was a very quick read, just 29 pages. Will look for more from these authors.

This is a wonderful quick short story written and narrated by two of my favorite people! JT Lawrence and Roshina Ratnam together simply magical...
Witches Get Stitches happens to be a prequel to the Blood Magic series, and it gives us a peek into who Jax is, and the hard knock life she grew up in. No wonder why she has trust issues...

I received this book for free at my request but the opinion is of my own. This literally pulled me in from the very beginning. I love the magic aspect of this story and how the story pulls you from the beginning. Imagine being the only girl wizard and dealing with school full of regular witches. I’m definitely looking forward to reading the rest of this story and see all that happens.

I enjoyed this short story so much. I cannot wait to get into the whole Blood Magic series, Jax seems like an awesome character and based on this short story and the fact that JT Lawrence is involved, the series is going to be great, I just know it.

Jax's absolute confidence

I like this book, it was really fast paced. Jax Knight is a rare witch she's good but she also believes in getting revenge. At the Copperfield Institute Jax has to fight to be better.
Great book but a very abrupt end. I hope there's more!!
