I received a copy of this novella from the author.

Desperately trying to leave behind a life on Terra, Melanie Destin arrives on Luna to discover that her medical degrees don’t guarantee her a job with any hospital or clinic. That is other than the charity clinic that pays only a subsistence living allowance.

Chatted up in a bar by a man who claims to be the captain of a star ship that needs the services of a doctor Mel has a decision to make.

The pay he offers is good and she wouldn’t have to pay rent on an apartment that she wouldn’t be home to use. But there’s a catch, isn’t there? There must be. But what?

Could this be the new start Mel has been looking for? Will she take a chance on Chalmers and his crew?

This novella is the prequel to the Requiem’s Run series. It a fast paced adventure through space that you’ll not want to end.

Armed with a double PhD in medical sciences and nanotech, Mel puts all her life savings into moving from Luna from Earth. Once there, she discovers that she has no job opportunities and can't afford to leave or to stay. She makes the only choice she can, accepting a job aboard a galactic courier.

I really enjoyed this one. Mel is an interesting character. I don't feel like I know her super well after this one novella but I'm intrigued enough that I want to know more.

This snappy little sci-fi novella introduces a clever new heroine and a compelling world. I can't wait to read more in the series.

The Luna Mel finds herself on is very much the one a decade or two post the events of The Moon is a Harsh Mistress. The action moves on relatively quickly from there. Aside from the obvious Heinlein comparison, this also reminded me of John Wilker's Grand Human Empire series.

An author supplied free read. A teaser.

Its a prequel, so I knew it was going to be a back story setup for the series. I did not expect much.

I did like the overall feel. True to form, it was about how the doctor was introduced to the ship. The action sequence was fine. We knew the new character had to prove herself a fit to becoming a valuable member of the crew. The escape could have been more tense, but this is a short prequel and not really suited for an extended battle.

Many open paths to more adventures. This prequel does a good job of opening a character and providing room for growth.

This was a GoodReads. I will have to look into this series.

Very good Space story. The Captain and the Doctor on the spaceship keep each other in check as to what happens on the ship. The Doctor is very grounded and the Captain sometimes tries new things on cargo but it all works out. Heading to read the next book. Armstrong Station here I come.

Good story. This is a novella prequel to Amazon Station and sets everything up nicely. Lots of action, interesting characters. I could do without the multiple f-bombs.
