Life is complicated. Even in the moments when our circumstances seem relatively smooth, a look at the world around us reveals problems far beyond our ability to solve. Amid this chaos, most of us are longing for a simpler life. When Jesus walked the earth, He, too, faced a complicated world. But, instead of surrendering to its chaotic pull, He modeled a life of simplicity. This same type of purposeful life Jesus lived, He offers to us. Finding Simplicity walks through the book of James, exploring how we can follow Jesus' example and put His teachings into practice. James goes straight to the heart of the issues we face challenging us to choose simplicity over complexity, exercise God's wisdom, and discover the joy in every day.
Simple doesn't necessarily mean easy, they can also be profound as we see in this book.
The author goes through the book of James and distils some simple but profound truths that can help us transform our personal lives, our walk with God, and our relationships with others.
Some of these truths challenge us to:
Choose joy See our challenges through God's eyes Tap into God's supply of wisdom Choose confidence over doubt Take responsibility for our actions
And many others.
Amber Parker's writing is engaging and non-academic, and I like the relevant stories and anecdotes.
I also like that there are practical suggestions and reflections in every chapter. This makes for a great personal Bible study. I feel that I need a reminder on many of those truths and plan on going through this book again and make lots of notes.
This is my honest opinion based on the review copy I received from the publisher.
In many ways, Finding Simplicity is a very simple book, which is perfect for the message it contains. Amber Parker is a fantastic Bible teacher, having the ability to take a passage of scripture and apply it to real life. There are some really good analogies to be found within these pages. (I loved the conversation with the little boy about watching his feet/faith grow!) The one thing I would have liked to see done differently is that, since it is technically a study of the book of James, I would have appreciated something at the start of each chapter that denoted which verses were being referenced within the chapter. While verses from James were constantly popping up throughout the book, I would have liked a clearer guide so that I could follow along with scripture. But overall, I loved it!
