I'm a Finnish-Swedish lady, born in Sweden in 1990 and living in Finland during 1997-2013, and now I'm currently living in Sweden again for a little while. I got myself a bachelor's degree in graphic design from the university of industrial arts in Helsinki in 2013, and during my two final years of those studies I drew my first real webcomic, A Redtail's dream, a 556 page tale built around some concepts of Finnish mythology.

I also ran a crowdfunding campaign for a printed book version of A Redtail's Dream, and it went so well that I'll be able to work full time as a webcomic creator with the profits and only draw SSSS for a while.

So, if you’re reading this, that means you’ve read Book 1, and it shouldn’t be a spoiler to say what I’m about to say, but just in case: Some people are immune to the illness, some aren’t.

What I like most about Book 2 is that we are finally getting into the thick of things. The plot unfolds and we explore the Silent World with our band of misfits. I liked learning more about the characters, even the new guy. I know some people don’t like Reynir, but I’m fond of him.
 photo 288 reynir 2_zps3e1awgln.jpg

He’s a nice addition to the crew, and it’s cool to see an Icelandic mage figuring out that he’s a mage (since we already have a Finnish mage). The two types of mages are completely different, and they’re both very interesting. Plus, I think there’s a lot more to Reynir and his abilities that we haven’t seen yet. I’m actually in Chapter 12 right now, so a little past the Book 2 mark, but I still haven’t figured out his deal.

The art is still beautiful, and the dialogue is awesome, especially for a webcomic. I’m just so impressed with this book.

We learn about the program that gave people the option of birthing babies who are immune to the illness.

We also get more “informational” pages and maps, which is honestly my favorite part.

I love the section on the Dog Beasts, the one we actually meet in the comic.

Just finished the First Adventure and as I understand the physical book is only about halfway there (this is otherwise available as a free webcomic, though I do dream of buying the books one sweet day) but I'm going to just say that I love the whole series from concept to art to characters! And the whole arc was really well-written and almost made me drop a tear here and there.

I really recommend this, especially if the idea of a Scandinavian and Finno-Ugri mythology inspired postapocalyptic world (troll-creatures, ghosts, the swan of Tuonela and runo songs) sounds cool to you!

Note: I feel compelled to add that the comic has gone seriously downhill since I wrote this review, and every good thing I say about it here—particularly concerning the treatment of the female characters, and the positive traits of any of the characters—is somehow squandered or backtracked in the next couple of books. Still, I have to be honest: I really did like Book 2.

The biggest strength of this story is, as always, the characters—and even though I said plenty about the characters last time, turns out I have more to say this time, so let's get going.

The established characters continue to evolve, and we continue to see more facets of them as the story progresses. Sigrun vaulted her way straight to the top of my favorites list with her ability to keep a cool head and take charge in a crisis and her readiness to protect her crew even at risk to herself (and can I just say how refreshing it is to see a scene in which a woman protects a man by bodily throwing herself in front of him and (non-fatally) taking a blow that was meant for him, and nobody in-universe treats this as a big deal at all, because duh, she's a seasoned soldier protecting a non-immune civilian, that's exactly how things are supposed to work). Emil, with his strong sense of compassion* and his need to at least try even if a situation seems hopeless, was not far behind.

Speaking of which, let's talk about Sigrun, shall we? Time after time now I've wanted to point to Sigrun and say "See? See? This is how you write a strong female character!*" When she says "no" to a male character who makes a suggestion, it's not to beat the audience over the head that she's a Strong Female Character (TM) who won't take no orders from no man, it's because as the expedition leader she has every right to make those calls, and because as the person with more field experience than anyone else on this team, she truly, honestly does know better.* Also, aside from an occasional bit of bragging on the part of Sigrun herself (and really, she's far from the first person in this story to brag), her skills as a warrior are assumed rather than constantly over-hyped... but then the narrative follows through on that premise*, and shows us what she's capable of in a couple of high-stakes situations where the outcome actually matters, so that even when she fails in battle later (which she does eventually, in the third book, with some pretty serious consequences too), I honestly believe it was due to overwhelming circumstances rather than because the writer lied to me.* Perhaps most refreshingly, in direct opposition to the usual narrative sellout that tries to trick us into believing we've got a Strong Female Character (TM) by giving us a character who refuses all help because she's just too independent for that, only to need to be bailed out because she tried to do something on her own that she had no business doing on her own and got in over her head (*cough* Blightborn *cough*), Sigrun isn't afraid to ask for help if it's the most expedient way to solve a problem or if she's dealing with something that falls outside of her skillset... but then, if said help falls through, she's still perfectly capable of getting out of trouble completely on her own.* Other authors need to learn from this comic.

As far as the female characters go in general... both Sigrun and Tuuri have men that they're close to. They have plenty of interactions with their male teammates as well. But neither of them is ever defined by her relationship to a man. They're not there because they want to help a man, or impress a man, or live up to a man, and the possibility of a male love interest is never even mentioned. Each of them is on this team for exactly one reason, and that is because she wanted to be there. Sigrun "lives for the military". Tuuri lives to explore. That's it. They're fulfilling their own desires. And it's kind of sad that this stands out so much, because it's pretty much the bare minimum requirement for writing an interesting female character.

As to the characters as a whole... I seem to recall Minna Sundberg saying somewhere that she started this comic specifically because she had a group of characters she loved, and wanted to give them a story, and that shows. One complaint I've had about a lot of SF&F I've been reading lately is the way some writers use a fantastic setting to cover for the blandness of their leads the same way a mediocre cook uses excessive spices to cover for bad meat. Ignore the fact that this guy is a werewolf, and he becomes just another abusive asshole.* Look at this girl when she's not being marooned on an alien planet, and she's just another Completely Average Generic Schoolgirl. This group, though? Take away every fantastic element of the story—no magic, no monsters, no apocalypse—and have them living out perfectly ordinary lives in modern-day Scandinavia instead, and I would still want to read about them*—and that's the single nicest thing I can say about any work when it comes to characterization. The Hotakainens are a dysfunctional family with a tragic backstory. Emil is a spoiled rich boy with a heart of gold* struggling to get along in a world he was never properly taught how to navigate. Sigrun is a hyperactive goofball who has real steel beneath that happy-go-lucky exterior. Mikkel is a real-life troll with authority issues and a mysterious past. Reynir is a sheltered farm kid whose impulsivity lands him in heaps of trouble. Whether you have them exploring the ruins of a forgotten world ninety years after a zombie apocalypse or going to school and pursuing careers in a perfectly mundane modern day, these characters are interesting in their own right, and having interesting characters is a necessary foundation for any good work, regardless of how much you spice up the setting.

*This is the case specifically in Book 2, but if you wish to continue with this series, you should probably be aware that the writer chose to ruin a good thing in one of the books that follows.

Okay, knew what to expect with this one so it was a better experience, still not my favorite.. the characters are still annoying/dumb. Still really like the art, presentation/graphic design, random world building and overall concept. Its a really cool idea, I just wish the characters were a little less annoying/rude/dumb.. Perhaps they will grow with me over time. I still have two more books, I do wish I liked the characters because I feel like it would be a fave for me if I did.

I love this series, and it just keeps getting better. The only downside is the pace - it's just too slow (for me) to be read as a webcomic. It's definitely better read in large chunks, either by delaying and then catching up on the comic, or by buying the books. But it's an amazing story, accompanied by gorgeous art, and there's nothing else out there like it.

Binge read this one. I love the spiritual elements of the book and connecting both Nordic Mythology to current religious belief systems. This one deals with deeper emotional and psychological issues.

I am a total fan and I have been following this web comic every day for years. What I particularly love, in addition to the wonderful world building , non-USA centric point of view and fantastic art, is that you can never predict where the story is going. Minna Sundberg has a wide writing/art range from cute cute humor to body horror second to none. Her heart, compassion and a sort of macabre wit shine through which is a very unusual combination. If you know anyone who likes Graphic novels, the best Xmas gift you could give them is the first volume of this series. My highest recommendation.

Review for SSSS Book 1 can be found over there.

It's been 3 years since I've started reading SSSS (that was when the first hardcover book came out), and since receiving the second one last month, I've only finally got around to read it today. (I may have forgotten about it because it was hidden behind all my other stacks of books.) Had to re-read the first one because I kinda forgot all about it since then. Hopefully, the next ones won't take as long to get a physical release. (Yeah, I know I could read the webcomic online, but I hate reading online...)

Well, to be quite honest, I don't think I have much to add to what I said for the first book. We pick up where we left off at the end of the previous book and keep on the adventure, which only gets more interesting as we go. As for the rest (art, colours, characters), it's still as great as it already was.

Emil and Sigrun are still pretty hilarious. We get to see more of Mikkel who happens to be fairly funny too. Not sure if we got to see Tuuri more but I feel like she stood out more than in the first book, which is good because she's quite endearing. Reynir, the new addition to the cast is interesting, and intriguing I guess. And Lalli is still a-do-ra-ble as ever. For real, Lalli is just too precious!

Oh, and I should probably mention the adorable Kitty? (Who looks amazing as a plush btw.)

I love these webcomics. I thought this portion to be her strongest. Her characters are great, the art is great, and the mixing nordic mythology with post apocalyptic monsters is a lot of fun.

Reread: I read the print version with the kids, this time around. It's a great comic. Very exciting. Beautiful artwork.

Almost as good as the one before it. Art is still stunning, story is engaging. I love all the characters. The comic manages to balance between comedy, adventure and horror skillfully.

While in book 1 we had the prequel, a montage of the years in-between in archived document format, the introductions to both expedition team and the ones who organized it all while they travel to the Silent world and the first days of the mission here the story is mostly put together and more focused on present-day and one place. It's over 100 pages shorter, but still manages to feel like a complete book, as there is enough substance, with a nearly cinematic climax towards the end. Bonus content is nice, although there’s not as much as with book 1.

We meet Reynir and Kitty, as well as some of our first recurring enemies. Onni stops being a wimp and joins the support team - although he still finds way to protect his family and kick some ass. Some interesting discoveries are made. Many, many things go wrong on the expedition, but luck seems to ultimately favor our heroes as the setbacks and losses aren't too bad. We can still recover from all this...

Sigh. I better start mentally preparing for the next book.

It's a little difficult to judge the SSSS books independently as they tell a continuous story without particularly effective break points to wrap up the previous book and start the next one. WIth much of the heavy lifting of setup out of the way, the second book moves a bit more quickly and smoothly. The A-plot can feel a little redundant and like it drags on. It feels like it's providing cover and inertia for a developing B-plot. While more enjoyable than the first book, on its own, the second book also feels incomplete, albeit in its own way. Where the first served well as act one, the second book reads more like act two part one making it a perhaps stranger binding.

The art is lovely and the layout compelling. Sometimes, though, the art can be muddy with confusing perspective shifts, and the layout can be disordly. This is particularly true on two-page spreads where occasionally some of the panels go left to right, top to bottom but other panels go top to bottom, left to right. I think this gets better over the years the author illustrated this, but it never quite goes away.

This book technically isn't released yet (the Kickstarter campaign just ended a day or so ago, I believe), but I'm reading the webcomic (found here: http://www.sssscomic.com/index.php ) and am at the latest chapter (18). Book 2 covers chapters 6-10. Sooo this is going on the "read" shelf. XD

Amazing continuation of the adventures of the motley crew sent to scavenge the Silent Land for books, and another fulfilling installment of "a lighthearted, Nordic postapocalyptic adventure with a lot of friendship, some magic and a little bit of horror and drama."

I believe I have chosen favorite characters: Mikkel and Lalli. They're all awesome, but these two...I mean, "face cancer," and that whole mage epicness that Lalli somehow managed to pull off. Ooh, and Reynir. He's just...so...idk, adorable, I guess. A bit lighthearted even amid the chaos, is extremely happy with any sort of success, and willing to look death in the face .

Ok, what do we have here?

✔️Obnoxious characters.
✔️Weak plot.
✔️Whole pages where nothing happens.

I'm so disappointed in this graphic novel. I like the world-building and it rings even truer after COVID. But there's nothing more than a beautiful book that looks good on the shelf.

I swear, I've never seen a bunch of characters as unpleasant as these. They seem all so dumb, and I dislike dumb characters. The new addition is even dumber than the rest. And I didn't think that was even possible.

And yet they move in an interesting world. I wish we could know more about it but sadly nothing really happens in this volume. There are just glimpses of a long lost past. The author even adds ghosts, which I usually like in a story, but it only makes things worse. Nothing seems to make sense anymore.

And it's really hard to read these books. I always need a break (or a good night sleep) before I can finish it.

Sigh, I've backed all four volumes. So I'll just keep reading.

Knowing this is a webcomic helps lessen some of the confusion with the sudden start and stopping points for the collected work, but it still hit me a little.
This collection introduces two new characters to the mix: a naive shepherd boy with a latent potential for magic, and a rescued kitten that gives warnings when baddies are near. A little more action in this one since we had fewer character introductions, but the plotting is still very patient. The author is meticulous with her gorgeous art and spends as much time developing her characters as she does moving the plot forward. If you're an action enthusiast, this isn't necessarily your story, but if you love character and lore-driven stories then this is for you.
