The third lost princess. The final key to the treasure. And a battle for the throne.

Growing up deep in the forest as a poor charcoal burner’s daughter, Emmeline has always known her identity as a princess of Mercia, and she lives in fear of being caught and killed. Prince Ethelrex, the strongest warrior in the land, has done everything he can to prove his loyalty to his father, including searching for the last lost princess. When Ethelrex finally captures Emmeline, the king commands his son to marry the princess in order to win the support of the people and undermine the rebellion.

Forced into marriage, Emmeline has one goal—to escape. But Ethelrex takes his marriage vows seriously, including his promise to love and cherish his wife, and has no intention of letting Emmeline get away. As the battle for the throne rages, will the prince be able to win the battle for Emmeline’s heart?

So I'm probably just going to SCREAM FOREVER WHY IS THIS SERIES OVER WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO WITH THE REST OF MY LIFE????

I loved Jody Hedlund's last YA series. ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT. But this series? This lost princess trilogy? This series takes the tea. I mean seriously I am in love.

And because I couldn't help myself here is another collage.

Emmaline was my favorite of the sisters. She was relatable in her anxiety attacks and her love of both reading and animals and her feelings of inadequacy. I loved seeing more of Lance and Felicia, my other OTP. I adored Rex (although Edmund is my only true love) although this boy... oh my stars he was so selflessly obstinate he really needs someone to take care of him because he won't do it himself.

I don't think we are actually in any danger of Stolkholm syndrome with this book despite the whole forced marriage thing XD . Also don't worry it was all tastefully done and still appropriate for a ya audience.

I really need more books in this series. *happy sighs*

I received a free copy of this book from the author, all opinions, however, are my own.

Okay so like...reading this, it didn’t necessarily FEEL the way my favorite books normally do. However, since finishing it, I’ve thought about it constantly and have to admit...I think it’s well deserving of five stars.

Let’s start out by talking about MAH BOI: Rex. He’s a muscular, cunning man who also happens to be a prince and the son of the most powerful man on earth. He could be cruel...but instead, he prefers to choose kindness. (Honestly, this dude is basically a copy of my Pentegreens series hero, Rish. One of my favorite things about this book was seeing a character very similar to mine through someone else’s eyes. I loved it.) Rex is my new book boyfriend okay. He mine. MY baby.

And then there’s Emmeline, this books heroine, and she’s absolutely amazing. Give me a girl who’s weak and scared but still brave and learning how courageous she can be any day of the week. Aghhh this ship.

(And speaking of the ship: this could’ve been Stockholm syndrome and easily, because it is about a forced marriage. Rex married emmeline because his father made him...but quickly realized she was a woman worthy of all his respect and love, and vowed to cherish her. In the meantime she starts to appreciate him as someone who cares for her and genuinely loves her even when it makes his life significantly harder. They have their share of bumps and jolts in their relationship but overall I feel Absolutely No Shame in shipping this with my whole heart.)

The villain? Fantastic. The conflict payoff? Perfect. The series finale? Amazing. New book boyfriend? Acquired.

Well done, Ms. Hedlund. Well done.

I love, love, love this series. I wish that it could go on and never end!

This book measures the content of character. Prince Ethelrex forced Princess Emmaline to marry him. He did this because his father instructed him to. He spent his life doing exactly what he was told. It takes a Princess for him to determine his path and who to trust.

Princess Emmaline is strong and loyal. I loved the reunion between the sisters. This story was all that I could wish for it to be.

Wow, I loved Hereafter! It’s tied with Foremost as my favorite in The Lost Princesses series!

Enemies to lovers is such a difficult trope to pull off well, but Hereafter did it wonderfully, especially since it was combined with another favorite trope of mine, marriage of convenience (although in this case, it was rather forced on Emmaline’s part, but it’s not only done very tastefully, but she chooses to use it as a way to bring about peace). Despite Ethelrex and Emmaline being natural enemies due to their positions, they share an almost immediate connection, but their gradually deepening relationship is made more complicated by the circumstances surrounding them, specifically Ethelrex’s evil father, King Ethelwulf.

Emmaline and Ethelrex are both fantastic characters, both with good, loyal hearts, with a desire for peace and doing what’s right. I loved how Emmaline has always known her true identity as a princess and must overcome her fears to do what’s best for her kingdom and people, as well as learn to embrace who she really is. I really related to her anxieties and admired her for her quiet strength.

Rex was a fantastic hero as well. I loved how loyal and devoted he was to his marriage vows and to Emmaline, and that despite how they came together, he was determined to cherish her as his wife in the way she deserved. It was incredibly sweet. Their relationship developed in a realistic and lovely way; I love how Emmaline gradually came to realize that Rex isn’t the evil prince she believed and grows to love him in return. Both of their growth was wonderful—Emmaline develops quiet courage, and Rex comes to stand up to his father, determine his own path, and be true to what he knows is right.

The story also had a lot of adventure as the plot of hunting for the ancient treasure that’s been woven through each book of the series concluded, and Adelaide finally takes her place as the rightful queen. The conclusion to how everything worked out was perfect.

Overall, Hereafter was both a delightful medieval romance and the perfect conclusion to The Lost Princesses series. I’m so excited to see what Jody Hedlund has planned for us next!

Epic. I love how this final book finished the series in such an unexpected way! After reading the heroic adventures of her two sisters, I struggled with Emmeline's personality a bit, the way she gives in and doesn't fight tooth and nail or make the sacrifices others think she should. But over time I grew to appreciate her strengths and attributes that helped finally bring peace to the land. The Prince was another unknown personality to get used to, and it was great to see his perspective and learn of his inner turmoil as he seeks with Emmeline for a future void of war. The story played like a movie in my mind with the action and suspense of the dangerous journeys, treacherous maze of tunnels, and vindictive villains, balanced with blossoming romance, reunited sisters, and self-discovery within the two main characters. This is an exciting series that is perfect four young adults and not-as-young adults alike!

Conclusion!

It's the last book in this series. The last princess. I loved this one- for its part of the adventure and for the conclusion. I loved the Prince, his loyalty and his devotion to Emmaline. And Emmaline? She was his equal in every way - well, once she stopped running away. Everything came together in This book and it was so sweet. This is a series you definitely want to read in order. Each book builds off the previous one.
Content: peril, mild violence, kissing

This series goes out with a bang and I couldn't be happier with the conclusion! The third novel delivers more nonstop action yet the levels of romantic attraction are significantly higher due to the nature of this marriage of convenience story! Deliciously swoony, this sweet romance is a slow burn and tastefully done!

Innocence, chivalry, and life lessons are woven throughout the story of Hereafter. Just as in real life, the right choice isn't always easy to discern and characters find that moving forth when the way is clearly treacherous often takes more courage than they (or we) possess. Messages of faith and character are foundational to this story yet it is compassion and grace which conquer all!

I highly recommend this series to readers of all ages! It's an excellent selection to read along with a daughter or granddaughter or younger sister or mentoree! Jody Hedlund clearly understands what readers (young and young at heart) truly enjoy in a story.

'God oft gives us more than we deserve. I can do no less for others.'

Jody Hedlund definitely saved the best for last in her Lost Princesses medieval series. The medieval setting is my favorite, I think, and she does it so very well. This time we have Emmeline's story, she who is a twin to Princess Maribel. They both, along with their older sister, Princess Adelaide, were spirited away when the evil King Ethelwulf killed their parents and took control over the kingdom. For 18 years they have been hunted, for each holds a part of a puzzle that will bring great riches to the kingdom and also peace. Adelaide and Maribel were never found in time but now Emmeline's hiding has been discovered and she is forced to wed the evil king's son, Rex. Rex, however, is not the evil prince she thinks he is.

This one was so good! I was on the edge of my seat, so to speak, especially during the descent into the Labyrinth of Death. Hedlund gives us a wonderful and oh so satisfying conclusion to her very good series. And we learn that sometimes fear is just courage trying to emerge. I personally hope she returns to her medieval tales soon. Truly, it is her forte.

*My thanks to the author for a preview copy of this book. The opinions stated here are entirely my own.

The third lost princess. The final key to the treasure. And a battle for the throne.

"Hereafter" is a beautiful ending to an exhilarating, romantic, and compelling series. Author Jody Hedlund excels in blending faith with adventure and passion, and this story is no exception. Filled with inspirational characters, lessons in faith and love, and a story that reminds readers of what is important in life, readers won't be able to put this book down. Although I wish the series didn't have to end, Hedlund leaves readers satisfied and cheering for the heroines and heroes. Don't miss this wonderful conclusion to an amazing series!

"Hereafter" is the fourth installment of the Lost Princesses series and follows "Always," "Evermore," and "Foremost."

I would give this books ALL the stars 🌟!! I have loved every book in this series and I loved every next book more than the last. The third book was my favorite of the series. Not only did the plot line come to its climax, but this novel has a fun, romantic story involving a manly fierce knight with a heart of gold and a beautiful heroine finding her courage. Emmeline and Rex are one of my new favorite fictional couples! As soon as I started the book I was immediately hooked. The romance is relatively fast paced, but not rushed which I appreciate.

As I mentioned in my previous reviews for other books in this series, I LOVE this series!! Every book has a great balance of action and romance and this final book is no exception! As someone who enjoys reading romance, I appreciated all of the sweet & romantic moments this book offers.😍I literally had to use self control not to devour this book in one day. I paced myself because I did not want this story to end.

I know that this book will be one of my favorite reads of the year. This whole series is a keep-on-my-shelf-forever keeper!

Emmeline, raised as the daughter of a charcoal burner deep in the forest, has always known her true identity as a princess--and she has never wanted to embrace it. She's perfectly happy living with her adoptive parents away from civilization, other than the fact that she's constantly afraid they'll be found. When her parents tell her it's time to join her two sisters and claim her true identity as a princess, fighting against the evil King Ethelwulf, she doesn't want to. Before she can figure out a different plan, however, King Ethelwulf's soldiers arrive at her home, and in order to spare her parents from being tortured, Emmeline agrees to go with them. She hopes to be able to escape, particularly knowing that the plan is to force her to wed Ethelwulf's heir, Ethelrex, but she's not counting on her reaction to Rex, who is different than she expected anyone associated with Ethelwulf to be.

Rex has trained to be the most elite warrior in his father's forces. He is deeply loyal to his father and will marry Emmeline as he's expected to--but he's not expecting to fall for her, especially not so quickly. With his father and his wife at odds, Rex, who is just as committed to his marriage vows as he is to his father, must reconsider his path in life.

I've enjoyed the previous books and prequel novella in this series, but this book is easily my favorite. I just loved it. Rex was such an intriguing character; the heir to an evil, brutal ruler, he has been taught violence and domination, but he also has a deep moral compass and wants to do what's right. I loved seeing how he interacted with Emmeline--both the times he was totally sweet and the times he failed her as he struggled to figure out how to please her and his father. As for Emmeline, I really liked seeing her try to figure out what she should do to try to establish peace in the kingdom as well as trying to sort out her feelings for Rex. This was a great conclusion to a terrific series...and I already want to go re-read it!

5 stars.

“Courage is not the absence of fear but the determination to persevere when circumstances are at their worst.”

I love Jody Hedlund’s books - both historical and YA - and this finale to the Lost Princesses series is Jody Hedlund at her finest. Though I expected to see some surprises in the plot, I was not prepared for the intensity of emotion, flurry of non-stop action with danger and rescues aplenty, depth of character development and unexpected plot twists in this beautifully crafted novel. Once I started the book, I could not put it down! If you love YA medieval fiction, you will absolutely adore this book and the entire series. I do recommend reading the series in order, starting from the novella Always.

This book is a little different from the others in that Emmeline has always known her true identity as a princess while being raised by an ex-elite guard and a former lady in waiting. Emmeline is asked to overcome her fears and lay aside her own personal misgivings for the sake of restoring the kingdom of Mercia. Rex, the crown prince of Bryttania, is the hero of the story which is quite surprising given that his father forcibly and ruthlessly took Mercia from Emmeline’s birth parents and Rex is tasked with drawing the last unmarried princess out of hiding. Emmeline and Rex are both deeply feeling, compassionate, loyal characters and their emotions are raw, heartbreaking, and captivating. King Ethelwulf, Rex’s father, has a bigger role in this book and Emmeline’s sisters and their husbands also return to the story for a long-awaited reunion.

I received a copy of the book from the author/publisher and was under no obligation to post a positive review. All comments and opinions are solely my own.

Ahh! The final novel in the Lost Princesses series is finally here. And I am not disappointed. This series is one that I would definitely recommend for anyone looking for cute and adventurous stories.
Emmeline was the character I mostly empathized with. She was hesitant to join in the fight for Mercia, but she finds her own strengths in the process of escaping. Rex was such a great main character. Can I marry him?! Honestly though he just was so sweet and strong. Something I found super interesting in this story was King Ethelwulf’s personal life with his wife. I won’t go into that because I don’t want to spoil anything. It just really intrigued me. So that is my hint for you to go get yourself a copy of this book—or copies of all of the books!
The ending of this series was great. It wrapped all the stories up charmingly. I know it may be soon to say but I just can’t wait for more books by Jody Hedlund. Every book that I have read of hers is a perfect romance to curl up underneath a blanket and read until the last page.
This cover was great. I really, really want to know who designs them because they are so intriguing and pretty. 5 stars!
Hereafter deserve 5 stars without a doubt. Everything about this story was cute and charming. All the characters were well-written, and I just got so wrapped up in the story I couldn’t put it down!

What an amazing finish to a wonderful series! I must admit, I am so glad these stories were released close together, because I couldn't wait to read each installment! Such a unique story, powerful characters, and intriguing situations. Makes for a good combination, don't you think!?

Honestly, I think Rex and Emmeline were my favorite couple of the series. It was kind of this marriage on convenience / marriage of force storyline, if such a thing exists. Rex came as a complete surprise to me. Because of how he was mentioned in the previous books, I thought I had his character pegged - that of a bad guy. And boy oh boy was I wrong, and oh so happy to be wrong. He was so complex - one moment I thought he'd side with his father, the next I was sure he was on Emmeline's side. He always kept me guessing, and I think that is why I found him so intriguing. But at the end of the day, he understood loyalty, and had a passion about him that was fascinating.

This series is fast paced, full of surprises, and carried a faith thread that is inspiring and uplifting. Hedlund has truly outdone herself with this series. Although I wish it wasn't over, at least I have my copies to read again whenever I want to revisit Mercia.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a favorable review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

The Lost Princesses series goes out with a bang & not in a good way. Look, I love reading romances. I have a weakness for the reformed bad boy. But there are just certain lines you don't cross, especially in a book geared for teenage girls. Forced marriage, freaking Stockholm Syndrome, relationship/emotional manipulation for the greater good...no, just no. 🤮 Ethelrex (and I'm going to call him Ethelrex instead of Rex because it's a dumb name for an awful hero) has every kind of baggage you can name as the oldest son of the evil King Ethelwulf. Be that as it may, having people tortured, threatened, kidnapped, you are not a good person if you have moral qualms because YOU KEEP DOING IT BECAUSE DAD SAYS SO. 😡 And I can't even start with Emmeline getting all up in her feels for his muscles because she was raised in a shack in the woods & her best friend is a fox & how could she know better. But really rationalizing his behavior because he kisses well?? I CAN'T WITH THIS. 🤮😡 I'm all for escapism and redemption, but when the "hero" has people tortured and emotionally manipulates the girl he forced into marriage...just no. The redemption arc has to handled well, and it isn't here, and the most egregious part of this mess is that this is a "romance" geared toward teen girls. But whatever your age YOU CAN DO BETTER for the love of cookies!!

"God made you for more . . . . This was the time for more."

Torn between saving the lives of her parents and fulfilling her destiny, Princess Emmeline faces an impossible challenge. Marriage to King Ethelwulf's son was either an escape route, or a prision sentence; she highly doubted it could ever bring peace.

In spite of the fact that Prince Ethelrex exudes enormous skill as a warrior, Emmeline has to reluctantly admit that he is a surprisingly honorable leader; treating her with a strange mix of kindness and protection. However, the real question remains; when faced with monumental decisions, will the prince become as despicable as his father; suggesting that she betray the sisters that she has never met or will he offer the ultimate sacrifice to restore the throne of Mercia?

This stirring conclusion to the "The Lost Princesses" has everything a climax should embrace; "wisdom, healing, and courage" to the very end. . . . . and of course quite a dash of romance! "But was love enough?"

Hereafter by Jody Hedlund is the third and final book in the Lost Princess series. Emmiline is one of the twin daughters of the king and queen of Mercia. With the death of the king and queen in Always, a novella, Lance an Elite guard and Lady Felicia flee with the three Princesses. The Three are separated and Lance and Felicia raise Emmaline in the forest. This is Emmaline's story and it is a tale of love and courage. The story is again full of knights and treasure, princesses and bravery. I found this to be a thoroughly satisfying conclusion to the series. As always my biggest regret is that this is the end of the series and I will have to look for new adventures elsewhere. So grab a fluffy blanket and a pot of tea so that you can settle in for a grand adventure.

I was given a copy of this book by the author with no expectations. All thoughts are my own.

What a fantastic finale to the Lost Princess series! I could not put it down, I was so intrigued at seeing how story would play out and how the evil king would finally be defeated. Hereafter is a satisfying conclusion with lots of romance, action and twists and turns. I was completely surprised at a couple of the twists and Jody wove a brilliant tale. I was also surprised at Jody’s match for Emmaline and how that worked in to the story. Well done!

What a great premise! I was so excited to get to this final book in the series and I loved it! The enemy prince finds the last lost princess and marries her right away to keep the people from joining the rebels. The sweet thing is how he fully intends to win her affection and honor his marriage vows to her. I enjoyed this from start to finish.

This is the final installment of the Lost Princesses Series from Jody Hedlund.
Oh my! My heart was totally engaged in this fast paced, adventurous and intriguing, sweet and passionate at the same time, wonderful and inspiring, medieval romance! I can truly say without hesitating that I had a hard time putting it down and that I stayed late into the night to finish this incredible trilogy! Wow! I love Jody Hedlund’s books and I really thought, since this was a YA trilogy, that in no way it culd surpass her adult novels, but I was wrong! This is one of her best yet written stories! And even if it’s directed to young adults I found it more than perfect for adults too and couldn’t stop myself from reading each book and then eagerly awaiting the next! I was really glad that the release of each book was close to the previous one, because I would have hated to wait so long to find out how this story would develop with each lost princess until the very end, and how they would reach a satisfactory end and Happily ever After. And wow, I loved how she ended the series with this last book, it was truly awesome!
This is Emmeline’s story, the third sister of the lost princesses, and I couldn’t imagine what her role would be in ending Ethelwulf’s terror reign and bringing peace to the Kingdom. We already had Queen Adelaide (eldest) and Princess Maribel in Norland recruiting the loyal people and the help of the Norlanders to plan an attack on King Ethelwulf’s kingdom. In the previous stories we get to see how King Etherwulf of Warwick attacks Mercia, and imposes his ruling after the King and Queen of Mercia die, one due to war wounds, and the other after giving birth to the twins. The princesses are saved by Elite Guard Lance and Lady Felicia, and later separated in order to hide them better and keep them out of reach from the evil King’s clutches. Now, only Emmeline remains hidden, but, contrary to her sisters, she has always known of her identity as one of the princesses. But living a happy and secluded life with her adopted parents, Lance (who became a local charcoal burner) and Felicia, she want's nothing to do with the rebellion that’s forming against the King. But just as her father is trying to convince her to leave together to Norland and join her sisters in the rebellion, they are assaulted by Prince Ethelrex, the strongest knight in the Kingdom, who has been searching for the lost princess with his father’s orders to marry her in order to seal an alliance with the heirs of Mercia and undermine the rebellion.
Ethelrex is a strong, yet compassionate man. He wants to make his father proud above everything and this quest might be the only opportunity to prove himself worthy to be his her and future King. So when he captures Emmeline, he forces her to marry him. But since he’s a man of one piece and a faithful man, he really vows lo love her and cherish her until death, and he intends to do that, every passing moment falling more in love with this amazing, beautiful and corageous woman that melts his heart. But does he have a chance to win her heart after coercing her to marry him? And what should he do when the King forces them to search for King Solomon’s ancient treasure in the laberynth of death that Emmeline knows almost by heart, but also knows that it might easily take them to their death too?
I can’t really say which of this stories I loved more. I fell in love with each of the characters of the previous stories, their braveness, their loyalty and compassion. But in this one, I loved that the relationship was more complex than the others. Emmeline was joining the enemy and she was at odds at the same time she was falling in love with his worst enemy’s son. Rex was a wonderful charachter too, and I loved how he slowly changes his vision of things thanks to Emmeline. He was a good man, but his obedience and loyalty to his father blinded him too. Will it be too late when he realizes that he can’t be loyal to his father and be a good person at the same time, or worse a fair future King. I loved the last part. I won’t spoil it, but I will say I shed a few tears. I loved the way the story is told in first person and that we get to know exactly what the character thinks. I truly wanted to shake Rex a few times. But it all ends well. Not only well, but the ending was amazing!!
This is really an inspirational book, there is so much message behind, about integrity, loyalty, and above all, about being what God made you to be, making the most of the gifts God gives you. Emmeline realices this at some point. And each princess has a special God given gift. You’ll have to find out which was Emmeline’s when you read the book. I truly loved it! And it shows how riches are not what makes you rich, it’s what you have inside what truly matters and makes you rich, to God and to others.
I truly recommend this book, and the whole trulogy of course, to young adults and older people alike. I think you’ll enjoy it: deep and compelling characters, non-stop adventure and life or death peril, and a sweet and endearing love that will have you swooning every second!
Thanks Jody for a womderful series! I’m sure I’ll be re-reading it again soon!

It is finally here! The last book in Jody Hedlund’s amazing series, The Lost Princesses. I was so excited for Hereafter and it does not disappoint. Hereafter follows the adventure of the younger twin, Emmeline. She has had an upbringing much different from either of her sisters. She was brought up knowing who she was, she was raised by the elite guard and the lady’s maid that saved her life and the lives of her sisters.
Emmeline has lived in hiding her whole life, she has grown up as a sheltered daughter of a charcoal burner. She was taught by her father, Lance, how to survive and to hide. But she can no longer hide and ignore her heritage. She is now the only princess eligible to marry King Ethelwulf’s son, Ethelrex. Her parents warned her that she must run and take refuge with her sisters, but Emmeline doesn’t want to run. She doesn’t want things to change. And so she finds herself the wife of King Ethelwulf’s son, Ethelrex.
Emmeline was a great character, I loved her for her strength but also for her fear. She was like me, always wondering if she was really doing what was right or if she was just giving in to her fears. I felt her pain as she tried to make the best of her circumstances. She was afraid but she didn’t let her fears control her. She learned how to forgive and love those who had hurt her and how to find courage in God to do the hard things.
Ethelrex, or Rex, is the heir of King Ethelwulf. He has grown up away from his father, taking his training in Warwick, the land of his home. Though he is a commander and has grown up under the pressure of his father, Rex is reasonable and he protects his own. Rex has lived his whole life trying to please his father and prove his worth. He now has the chance to prove himself to his father by finding Emmeline and making her his wife. But as he gets to know Emmeline, he finds himself falling deeper and deeper in love with her. He wants her to not just be his wife because she was forced to be, but because she wanted to be with him and because she loved him.
Rex was such a complex character. I loved him for the beginning. He was trying to figure out what was right and what was wrong. He had spent his whole life believing that his father was a harsh king, but a good king. Unfortunately as he serves his father in Mercia, he finds himself doubting the king. He starts to wonder if his father has been in the wrong this whole time. As he finds himself struggling with these doubts, he starts to see his father in a new light. His father starts making him choose between his wife, Emmeline, and obeying the king.
Emmeline and Rex will have to fight to stay alive as they navigate these rocky waters. Emmeline learns not to let her fears control her, but that God will give her the courage she needs. Rex learns to do what is right even when it is hard. He will have to give up everything before he can bring peace to his home.
There were so many great quotes to choose from in this book, but these ones really stuck with me. “Courage is not the absence of fear but the determination to preserve when the circumstances are at their worst” and “Was it possible that when we made up our minds to face our monsters, God gave us the right amount of courage at the exact moment we needed it?” These two quotes reminds me to find my courage in God. It is only through his power that we can do anything.
This was a great book, even better the ones before it. I fell in love with these characters. I would recommend this book to girls, 13 and up. This is a good, clean christian book.

As I prepared to read this final novel in Jody Hedlund’s The Lost Princesses series, I could not wait to find out how the journey would end. I just knew it would be exciting and romantic, and I was not disappointed. Jody has concluded her series in the best way possible- a completely rewarding conclusion with lots of unexpected twists.

Emmeline is a delightful heroine. We meet her in the comfort of the forest where she has lived her whole life, shadowed by her pet fox. She has always known she was one of Mercia’s lost princesses, raised by Lance and Felicia from Always, and though she knows they are not her parents, there is no one in the world dearer to her. She was trained by Lance to be a warrior and Felicia to be lady- essential qualities in a princess destined to retake her kingdom... but Emmeline would much rather her life stay exactly as it is.

But ruthless King Ethelwulf has other plans. He sends his best soldier, his son crown prince Ethelrex, to find Emmeline and to immediately marry her in order to neutralize the growing threat from her older sisters Adelaide and Maribel, who are seeking to retake Mercia from Ethelwulf’s clutches. But in Rex we find a surprise... a tough man with a carefully concealed heart.

When Rex meets Emmeline, it’s not the best start to a relationship. In order to coerce her to cooperate, he has to convince her he’s willing to torture her parents. In order to save them, Emmeline goes with Rex- with every intention of escaping before anything irreversible could happen.

Needless to say, Emmy finds herself abruptly married to Rex... and finding glimpses of tenderness and mercy in all of his actions, she begins to wonder if there’s a way she can bring about a peaceful end to the war through her marriage after all.

I loved Emmeline and Rex’s story of slowly uncovering truth and love. And I LOVED the way Jody crafted all the loose ends to bring the story to its conclusion, especially when the princesses discover the gifts God gave each of them are truly the greatest treasure: wisdom, healing, and courage.

Emmeline’s journey from fear to courage is my favorite lesson from the whole series. Her growth to courage and confidence in her decisions and in herself, with God’s help, is something any girl (young or old) reading this novel needs to hear. I was also immensely proud of Rex as the book progressed- his self-awareness and decisions to be true to himself and his vows, despite all the pressure he’s under, makes him into a true hero.

This series is highly recommended from me for any age, and I do very strongly encourage you to read them in order, most especially in quick succession! One day very soon I plan to start over and do just that!

A huge thank you to Jody Hedlund for the privilege of promoting this series!

This last novel in the Lost Princesses series was again a decent adventure story with a sweet Romance. It wrapped up the character's stories well, but again it just came over as really corny and cliched in places, and three was a LOT of telling rather than showing.

The fight scenes and other related details again made my eyes roll because they were so unrealistic. At one point the heroine talks about seeing her husband's 'muscles rippling' underneath his chain maille. Really? As in this stuff?

description

Was he wearing the Medieval version of skinny jeans? Or maybe he had really tight knitted chain maille like you see in movies. Which might explain why its so useless in protecting to characters from injury or death. Butter armour this definitely is- it can be sliced through with a single stroke.

And why does nobody wear any padding underneath their armour- which was vital in real life? Or indeed have a shield? I guess two weapons in either hand just looks cooler, but honestly a lot of those characters could REALLY have benefited from shields instead of weapons that required them to get dangerously close to their opponents.

Some of the action scenes, especially the ones in the Labyrinth were very Indiana Jones/Tomb Raider. (A couple of details were definitely reminiscent of the latest Tomb Raider movie.) That will appeal to some, and since this is YA, would probably do so to for the target audience.

Please note that whilst the publisher markets this series as 'Historical Fiction' its most definitely Fantasy.
None of the people places or Kindgoms mentioned in it ever really existed- except Mercia, but the Historical Mercia was quite different. Some of the place names might create confusion. Britannia was the a historical name for Britain at one point. A British person like me couldn't fail to notice that.
Or the reference to Bede: a real 8th century Monk and scholar who wrote a history of the English- but certainly did not design any Labyrinths or Booby traps.

There's sort of just enough of the historical to make the mistakes stand out- I noticed the raccoon. What are American animals doing even in a fantasy version of Medieval Europe? Unless they've got good cause to be there, I say they shouldn't be. The Harpy Eagle (from South America) I can kind of overlook as I see why that's necessary- but not raccoons.

Overall, this book and the series are OK. They certainly full the gap for clean Young Adult Romances with positive moral and spiritual messages. I'd just advise taking any of the content that appears to be in any way related to the real historical past with a very large helping of salt.
Its enjoyable as a fun sort of Fairy Tale, with some suspension of disbelief required.

Hereafter
The Lost Princesses #3
By Jody Hedlund

Emmeline has always known she was one of the lost princesses of Mercia. For the last 18 years, she has been raised by the very people who saved her and her sisters from the blade of King Ethelwulf. But the time has come to leave all she's known and join with her sisters in their attempt to reclaim the throne that rightfully belongs to Queen Adelaide Constance. But Emmeline fears that she hasn't the courage to face the coming war, she wants nothing more than to continue living the life she has always known. But change is coming whether she wants it to or not.

Prince Ethelrex (Rex), as the elder son of King Ethelwulf, is heir to the throne of the united Kingdom of Bryttania. But to secure his position and to stop the rebellion, Rex has been tasked by his father to secure the remaining princess and marry Emmeline upon capturing her. But finding this hidden away princess is no easy task as he is in a race against Queen Adelaide's rebels in securing her and her key to the ancient treasure of Solomon.

Forced into a marriage she doesn't want Emmeline wonders if this is her purpose to be a means to bring peace to the land and avoid the bloodshed war is sure to bring. Or is she merely a tool to be manipulated by King Ethelwulf to destroy her sisters? And Rex's promise that he meant his marriage vows - manipulation or truth? Emmeline's future and her heart depend on who Rex truly is.

Hereafter is the conclusion to the Lost Princess series and it is a series that must be read in order as each book builds upon what came before. For those who have read Always, we get to catch up on the life that Felicia and Lance took to protect the three princesses. The book and series end in such a way that it should prove satisfactory to almost everyone. And yes this book continues the clean YA standard those familiar with Jody Hedlund's YA works expect and appreciate. This is one series you don't want to miss.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion - all thoughts expressed are my own.

The thrilling conclusion to The Lost Princesses Series!

Emmeline had a happy child in the Inglewood Forest, raised by former Elite Guard, Lance, and former Lady-in-Waiting, Felicia, knowing that she would someday claim her rightful place as a princess of Mercia. After being captured and forced to marry Ethelrex, she is bent on escape, but could God have brought her here for such a time as this?

Ethelrex has trained for years to become the best of the best in preparation to succeed his father, King Ethelwulf as ruler of Warwick. He is determined to honor his father and prove himself worthy after many years away honing his skills as a warrior. He was a surprising character, in that I didn't know how I would feel about him, but in the end he was definitely one of my favorites! He is a born leader, with the ability to think critically, and a high moral code.

Emmeline is content with her upbringing, and has no wish to be princess. Out of all the princesses I think she is my favorite, and the one that I related best to. Emmeline loves her parents dearly, and is loyal, humble, and modest, acting bravely in the face of grave danger to protect the ones she loves.

I've enjoyed each of the books in this series, but this final one most of all, where everything comes full circle. I think I was most anticipating Emmeline's story because of how much I enjoyed Lance and Felicia's story at the very beginning of the series. Emmeline was the most relatable to me, because of her fears and insecurities, as well as her loyalty and bravery. Rex was well written, complex, yet honorable. Fast paced, and highly entertaining, I loved every minute of this book, because everything from previous books was being turned in it's head and kept me guessing as to how this could all work out in the end. A highly satisfying conclusion to a fantastic series!

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

In Hereafter, Emmeline grew up knowing she was one of the lost princesses of Mercia, but she never wanted to leave her life as an impoverished charcoal burner’s daughter. Her adopted father trains her to be able to escape in the isolated woods, undetected from those searching for her.

She has no desire to join the war against King Ethelwulf or join Queen Adelaide (the rightful heir to Mercia's throne) in her fight against Ethelwulf. The prince wants to show his loyalty to the king by tracking her and capturing her, unaware the king wants him to marry her to break the rebellion. Emmeline tries to escape even after she is forced into marriage.

What happens when Ethelrex takes his marriage vows seriously to love and protect his bride? What will it cost him in the battle for Mercia’s throne between his father, King Ethelwulf, and his wife’s sister, Queen Adelaide?

As always, Hedlund sets the stage with descriptive historical details and relatable characters in this clean romance, suitable for adults and older teens. The faith element is evident but not heavy-handed; it is evident in the character’s lives and their decisions. Despite their marriage under duress, Ethelrex and Emmeline want to honor their marriage vows as a lifetime commitment. The story is filled with twists to keep the reader engaged from start to finish, with a conclusion that will satisfy the reader. The reader will be satisfied in the fulfillment of the prophecy, the discovery or the treasure, and the final conclusion.

The final book in the Lost Princess series is here! With eldest princess Adelaide Constance ready to reclaim her rightful place as queen of Mercia, it is time for youngest princess Emmeline to come out of hiding. Raised in isolation in Inglewood Forest., Emmeline has always known her true identity, but she loves her quiet home and has no interest in stepping into the public eye, especially during a war.

When crown prince Ethelrex finally tracks down Emmeline and threatens her family, Emmeline is forced to leave her home and soon finds herself being used as a pawn against the sisters she has never met. Her lonely background has not prepared her to stand against manipulation or face the fears that roil inside her. Emmeline must quickly learn to embrace her heritage and her gifts if she hopes to aid her sisters and help remove evil King Ethelwulf from the throne.

There were a number of things that made this story stand out from the others. Emmeline was quite the reluctant heroine, and I thought it was very realistic that she would have a hard time being brave and wise when her world before she was captured had been so small. I was also shocked and pleasantly surprised to find out the identity of the hero of this book. While he has been present throughout the series, I would not have guessed he would turn out to have his own story. He goes through quite a transformation in his own right.

If you like medieval fairy tales, this series is one you should check out. Each book is full of danger and adventure, and the conclusion is highly satisfying.

I received my copy of the book from the author. All opinions in this review are my own.
