About the author

Shanku Maharaj, or Jyotirmoy Ghosh Dastidar is a very renowned name in modern Bengali Literature, especially in the field of travelogues. Total number of travelogues written is more than forty. The best creation of the author is in the area of Himalayas. In personal life is also one qualified mountaineer and participated in quite a number of Himalayan expeditions and trekking.
Himalayas present a never ending attraction in the romance of travelogues, exploration, novels and high adventures. There are quite a large number of books and travelogues we find on this subject starting from the early nineteenth century reports or novels. However only a few writers succeeded to secure a “forever” position in Bengali Literature on the Himalayas. Amongst the few thename of Shanku Maharaj is undoubtedly coming in the top few.

আজ থেকে ৫০ বছর আগে ৪-৫ দিনের ভ্রমনে লেখক গিয়েছিলেন হিমাচল প্রদেশের লাহল-স্পিতি জেলায়। সেই অভিজ্ঞতা থেকেই এই বইটি লেখা। এত সংক্ষিপ্ত ভ্রমনের পরও যে এমন সাবলীল ভাষায় বিস্তারিত লেখা যায় সেটা এই প্রথম দেখলাম। এই স্থানে এর আগে ভ্রমণ করেছেন এমন অনেক বিখ্যাত লেখকের কথাও এখানে উদ্ধৃত করেছেন, যার থেকে এই অনিন্দ্য সুন্দর উপত্যকার পূরো ইতিহাস ফুটে উঠেছে। বইয়ের ভাষা খুব সহজ, সাবলীল, প্রাঞ্জল - পড়তে শুরু করলে শেষ করে ওঠা শক্ত। শেষ করার পর লাহুল ভ্রমনের ইচ্ছা চাঙা দিয়ে ওঠাই স্বাভাবিক। লেখক সাধারন মানুষ যেভাবে ভ্রমন করে, সেভাবেই ঘুরেছেন আর তার অভিজ্ঞতা ও সংশ্লিষ্ট বিভিন্ন তথ্য-উপাত্তের ভান্ডার হল এই বই তাই এটিকে মধ্যবিত্ত বাঙালির আদর্শ ভ্রমন কাহিনী বলা যেতে পারে।

বইয়ে লেখকের ব্যক্তিগত কোন তথ্য বা মতামত একেবারেই নেই - শুধু ভ্রমন এবং তথ্য উপাত্তই আছে। শেষ অধ্যায়ে সংযুক্ত করুণ মৃত্যুর ঘটনাটি অত্যন্ত মর্মস্পর্শী, ভ্রমন কাহিনী পড়ে এই প্রথম মনটা খারাপ হয়ে গেল।
