Dr. Alejandro Junger was born in Uruguay. He graduated from medical school there in 1990 and moved to New York City for his postgraduate training. He completed three years of training in Internal Medicine at NYU Downtown Hospital and three more years of fellowship in Cardiovascular Diseases at Lenox Hill Hospital.

His drastic change in lifestyle and diet from his move to New York City soon reflected as irritable bowel syndrome and depression. Becoming a patient of the system he was practicing was such a shock, that it started a journey to search for an alternative solution to his health problems.

His findings are the subject of his first book, Clean. In it, Dr. Junger describes how he became aware of the toxicity of our planet. He also explains how detoxification and cleansing have been around for thousands of years, but knowledge about them has been lost at at time when it is more important than ever before. Most importantly, Clean is a manual for readers to learn how to turn our detoxification systems on full speed, while supporting our bodies to maximize their effectiveness.

He lives in Los Angeles with his three children.

I’ve done several 21-day cleanses with Alejandro Junger’s Clean program over the past decade. Each time I’ve followed the program, I’ve felt the best I have in my adult life. So, when I learned that Dr. Junger had a 7-day version of the program, I was game to give it a try. I purchased the set during one of CLEAN’s semi-annual sales (these products are quality and thereby not cheap!) and then I bought this book to dive into what makes this routine unique from the full 21-day version. Turns out it’s the powerful combination of functional medicine, ayurvedic medicine, and intermittent fasting.

I will report back after I finish my Clean 7 routine in June, but already I’m encouraged to experience the results and to test my body with a first-time fast. In reading this text, I especially loved learning about ayurvedic medicine and discovering my dosha (aka, my body’s constitution). (I’m pitta—predominant fire-water dosha FWIW.)

My 30s have taught me conventional medicine is important, but so, too, is functional medicine. I have discovered first-hand (thanks to Clean) how to help my body heal (from inflammation especially) and that experience over the past 10 years has radically changed how I approach my diet while also empowering me to “read” my body (see the five Rs in this book) as the No. 1 way to feel my best.

If it sounds like I’m trying to sell some MLM product, I’m not. I just can’t say enough wonderful things about Dr. Junger (who is a cardiologist—not a quack!). Once you experience how good you feel after following his CLEAN program, you’ll want to repeat the process at various points in your life, starting with whenever you need a good “reset” to return to the optimal health you maybe experienced for the first time after completing this very program. It’s worth the commitment, the cost, and the dedication for the results, I promise!

I truly enjoyed this book! For me this was not about weight loss it was about functioning better! The recipes were easy to make and tasty and the program never left me feeling hungry even during fasting. Comparing how I felt day 1-2 to day 5-7 was a huge difference. I definitely felt as if My whole body functioned better. This is something I will add to my annual maintenance!

This book sounds sales-ie and is pretty repetitive in some parts. There are a fair number of contractions, especially where the foods to eat and foods to avoid are concerned. That said, you can't really argue with results.

Excellent book!! If you’re looking for a good detox program Clean 7 is the one you want to try. It doesn’t just focus on weight loss and detox. It’s a program that’s truly focusing on your mind, body and spirit. Highly recommend.

Interesting read and now I’m curious about fasting! I have only been exposed to the religious side of fasting… my only wish would be to have more detail on the scientific benefit of each suggested supplement and more information available on your ideal ayurvedic diet. But it was an enjoyable introduction to the healing properties of fasting

Originally I was going to write a tear down destroy the book review. I'm not exactly swayed by it (probably because I'm only two chapters in) but I'm not going to completely hated.
First things first, this book is about how to use diets to change your life. Chapter 2 describes the three pillars of the CLEAN7 method and is basically a blueprint for the whole book. These include Functional Medicine, Ayurvedic Medicine, and intermittent fasting.
Before I get to these a complaint about Junger. I'm not going to say that he's doing this for money. It's possible but I doubt it. However, he makes a few errors and fallacies in the first chapter. For example, he calls chlorine and lead (which are elements) chemicals. Junger also isn't a dietician or gastroenterologist by trade. While yes he is a doctor (a cardiologist) and he probably did study dietary science while making the CLEAN program most of his studies appear to have been in the more "mystical" parts of these sciences.
Now onto the Three Pillars of CLEAN7.
First comes Functional Medicine. Functional Medicine is (as far as I can tell) a study of chronic disease and how to prevent it long-term. This is where most of the cleanses come from. Cleanses are somewhat infamous (largely due to stuff like gilly juice which basically killed people with how much salt was in the juice and due to its creator being a huge bag of sewage) and while most of the body's toxins are flushed out by the kidneys, pancreas, and liver it is possible that one of these systems aren't working 100%. Other parts of Functional Medicine (such as removing processed food from your diet and removing food types from your diet to see if you are allergic to anything) are more sound.
Secondly is Ayurvedic Medicine. Ayurvedic Medicine comes from the Vedas - the oldest scripture of the Hindu faith. As such, I'm not going to say that they're "pseudoscience". While it is extremely difficult to prove most of the tenets of Ayurvedic Medicine scientifically there are parts which definitely have actual health benefits (turmeric being a good example). The main thing to note about Ayurvedic Medicine is that you should not use it as a cure-all for everything (and Junger out right says this with a story about how he got a monk to get a stint for a heart blockage).
Finally is intermittent fasting. This is one that I somewhat have experience with. Maybe not any actual experience but I usually eat very light meals besides dinner - if not skipping breakfast and lunch completely. I'm not sure if this counts as "fasting" or just not eating but either way I am extremely skinny. Not completely healthy - I'm probably a bit too underweight - but I don't have any chronic diseases like gout or diabetes (both of which frequent my family).

I really enjoyed this book and his philosophy on detox. I appreciate a good detox now and again and this is done in a way that isn’t total deprivation so it eases people into it. I however was already an IF following 16:8 so that part wasn’t hard for me but I could see how others would possibly really struggle if it’s their first time. I love how he incorporated Ayurveda elements and learned a ton about my Dosha and what foods work well for me. That was a big help in reducing GI issues. Overall it was an easy read and well done.

I thought that this book is really extreme. I liked learning about ways to clean up my environment and what I consume. And I also liked his attention to the mind body connection. If anyone has an out of control autoimmune disorder, this would be a good place to start healing from it. But for me, it was just a bit too much. I do plan on trying a few recipes though. And making some adjustments to my environment and what I buy at the grocery store.

Liked that the program is only seven days and can help with digestion issues. Too many supplements that I don’t have on hand. Maybe I’ll try this in the future.

If you're looking for a moderate, slow-breakthrough to the "new", or a guided disrupter to your current habits of eating and/or dieting, this is a great book to read! It's easy to read and offers ideas you might not have thought about regarding how to think about a short-duration fast. This book was an easy kick-in-the-pants to get me jump-started with the direction I had already been mulling over. My favorite part was his easy explanations about Ayurvedic thought regarding health, and the principals of dosha. This was new to me and very interesting; the author made it simple. I also appreciated the easy shake recipes and the obvious exhortations to let your digestion rest for lots of important listed reasons. I was able to easily accomplish his 7 day detox with great outcomes.

Interesting concepts just leas than 25% needs reading. Too much wasted text

Id love to do the 7 day clean / detox and reality is no excuse. Ill say for now i enjoy my aport too much to sacrifice the lack of energy but i promise and commit to give it a go in the first week of August. At the very least to achieve the “your poo will smell less!”

Interesting chapter on meditation. Ill definitely research the Ruskin school technique and partner observation technique.

I hear goos things about his book GUT. Shame its not (yet) on Libby

Our body knows what it needs. Sleep when you are sleepy, eat when you are hungry, go to toilet when you want pee. Since when we need program to tell us what to eat, when to sleep , and how much calories we need. Don’t loss nature intuitive to enjoy life. By eliminating groups of food will cause further binge and mental problems.

It worked! I did the cleanse, and I felt amazing and got tangible results (my sweat stopped smelling, for example, and i lost a few inches)! I will have to try it again a few times a year, because eating clean all year round is very difficult.

complicado

Buena intención del Dr.por compartir sus conocimientos. Pero es un método muy difícil de llevar para personas sin recursos de tiempo y alimentos como los que se sugieren y son dificiles de conseguir en algunos lugares.

I like his approach - elimination diet, along with ayurvedic diet and intermittent fasting. But he sure makes it sound easier than it is.

I really enjoyed this book as I read it before gifting it to my mother who loves it and wants to eat healthier herself. It has insightful information on clean eating and opens a path for those who want to change their life and themselves through what they consume or put in their bodies. I am even willing to try it one day as it can boost immune health greatly, detox the body, renew energy and help live a healthier alternative lifestyle. For me, I enjoyed its insightful information on how what we eat plays a major roll in who we are and how we live. It was eye-opening that so much of what we consume can affect such small things such as mental illnesses, energy levels and our overall feelings or moods. I really enjoyed this book although it is probably not for everyone as you do have to give up a lot of favorite foods, but the ending results can be interesting to try and probably life-changing.

☆ The copy I attained was through a giveaway and all opinions are my own. ☆

This review update is for my ladies!

Updated review March 12, 2025:
Male bias in medicine is an unfortunate reality that this book falls prey. Women cannot fast the same as a man and achieve the same results. We have a different hormone flow, pure and simple. Put this book down and go grab “Fast like a Girl” by Doctor Mindy Pelz.

Review December 11, 2024:
Ubiquitous toxins in our modern world have made detoxing a priority when leading a healthy lifestyle.
This book did a relatively decent job explaining the importance of a detox and outlining a diet to assist in the process. I loved the incorporation of the Ayurvedic tradition and the recipes at the end have thus far been delicious.
The book did not achieve a five star status because most of the recipes require expensive cooking gadgets that weren’t mentioned until I was a third of the way through the novel. While those gadgets seem helpful, there are ways to work around them and those instructions would have made the difference in the rating deficit.
