Intrigue, secrets, memories, fear, love and fortitude propel the author along a journey that spans a continent and reveals the childhood ghosts that impacted her self-confidence and decisions as an adult. An enthusiastic and positive perspective are instrumental in her quest to slay her demons far from her Oregon roots as she perseveres and proves the apple doesn't always stay near the tree.
Wonderful memoir that takes the reader from the orchards of the Hood River Valley to hitchhiking in Europe to life in the CIA. And that's just the start of this adventurous life. With themes of independence and adventure balanced against home and family, the author shows us that a rich life is never about just one thing.
Readers are put on notice with this memoir that "happily-ever-afters" don't always come easily.
This book provides evidence that the inner nature can triumph over nurturing. With a depth of honesty, in her darkest experiences, the author conveys to the reader her pain and self-doubt. Childhood, college and work coven together to test her will and tenacity. The author overcomes her past through personal examination, professional help and perseverance. Her journey provides hope for those who struggle with breaking free from life's curve balls. Her spirit does indeed soar.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this memoir in paperback format while visiting the beach over the summer. I've known this family for 35 years but never knew all this! What a wonderful story that unfolds over the years with the author pausing to recognize, ponder, reflect, and appreciate values and morals that we all can (or should!) relate to. I laughed (a lot), cried, reminisced about my own visits to Applewood Farm, and just truly enjoyed this summer's "beach read".
