I have read at least two other books that were very similar to this one and decided to pass them along to someone else because they weren't a good fit for me. Unlike those books, this one goes a bit more in-depth into what Shadow Work actually is and what obstacles most of us need to work on in order to move forward.
Many people hear the term "Shadow Work" and assume it's dark and mysterious. In fact, it is identifying repeating patterns in your life, doing the inner work necessary to uncover the root of those patterns, acknowledging what needs to change, and then doing the outer work needed in order to make those changes permanent so that the patterns do not continue. Having said that, Shadow Work can be very challenging and it takes a great deal of courage to own your sh*t.
The book then outlines 13 specific conditions and dedicates an entire chapter to each. The author offers meditations, herbs, foods, color magic, spells, and rituals to help you work through them in order to finally release them and seek resolution. While some of the information was not new to me, I did get a new perspective on some things as well as some new ideas that I can incorporate into my own practice. I enjoyed the fact that there were multiple elements to each chapter, so the reader has options with regard to how to approach their own healing rather than something you have to follow to the letter in order to see results.
This book has a lot of practical tips of how to deal with things like anxiety, self esteem, depression, stress and life changes. I thought it was well written and thought through with useful rituals, meditations and spells to cope with the things mentioned above. I know I will get a lot of use out of this book.
The most useful book I've read in a while! Don't let the "witch" title put you off, if that's not your thing. It's full of meditations, tips and herbal help for whatever ails you: grief, anxiety, fear, insomnia. The author writes in such a kind and understanding way, she felt like a friend. I have bookmarked many pages and intend to go back and use them often.
Curative Magic, by Rachel Patterson, is a well thought out book filled with wonderful recipes, aromatherapies, and natural wonders that can be used to help people cope with mental illness.
As a counseling student and witch, I was delighted when I found this book. The chapter is organized by condition (Anxiety, depression, grief, stress). I loved how she went into detail different recipes, essential oil blends, tea blends, and incense you could use to help with each condition. The herbs used for many of the mental disorders in the book are overarching; for instance, chamomile and lavender are good all around herbs, while rose and vervain may have specific uses.
For me, I’ll probably use this book as a reference. I’m not a hearth witch, but I can certainly see myself using some of the recipes in the book, especially since a good friend of mine is getting ready to apply for vet school. I also work in a military town, and many folks who visit me are veterans who have PTSD, anxiety, depression, ect. I can see myself using this book, in combination with other psychotherapeutic techniques, such as CBT, DBT, ect.
Needless to say, it is repetitive. The herbs Patterson uses are the same for most conditions, and there are times I can easily predict what herbs to use. While the organization method at the beginning of each chapter is appreciated, I can do without her describing what these materials are used for (i.e. I already know how to use essential oils and incense and herbs; you described it in the first chapter). Nonetheless, I love this book, and would recommend it for magical practitioners, natural nurturers and anyone dealing with any mental health issues.
I really wanted to like this book. There were small areas of information suitable for anyone new to the craft, and some lovely meditations. However, it was so repetitive. There was a lot of wasted pages of repeated information in most chapters
super helpful and accessible! gives some great homemade herbal tea recipes, as well as essential oil blends, incense blends, and what herbs are good for what ailments.
