Discover a new system of Western magic that uses body postures and hand gestures to channel and utilize the fundamental esoteric forces of the universe. Kinesic Magic shares over 200 practical exercises that will teach you how to energize your body and mind, call forth the powers of the elements and planets, command spirits, bring comfort and healing to the sick, and exorcise demons.
Many magical systems require the use of words, symbols, herbs, tools, altars, sigils, robes, and so on. Kinesic Magic simply uses twenty-four hand gestures and twenty-four basic postures to invoke, direct, concentrate, project, and banish powerful magical forces. This unique system connects your somatic and intentional energies with the five elements, the seven planets of traditional astrology, and the twelve signs of the zodiac for remarkable magical results.
Donald Tyson is a Canadian from Halifax, Nova Scotia. Early in life he was drawn to science by an intense fascination with astronomy, building a telescope by hand when he was eight. He began university seeking a science degree, but became disillusioned with the aridity and futility of a mechanistic view of the universe and shifted his major to English. After graduating with honors he has pursued a writing career.
Now he devotes his life to the attainment of a complete gnosis of the art of magic in theory and practice. His purpose is to formulate an accessible system of personal training composed of East and West, past and present, that will help the individual discover the reason for one's existence and a way to fulfill it.
This is an intriguing book that presents a system of magic that’s based on poses and hand gestures. It reminds me of Pascal Beverly Randolph’s work, but the author does a good job of creating a unique system of his own and based it around the classical elemental and planetary models of magic. If you’re looking for a system of magic that you can do strictly with your body, this is a good book to start with.
I’ve read a few books on working with magic, all of which provide detailed lists of the paraphernalia “needed” to perform spells. So, I was intrigued to come across a book which states that tools and lengthy rituals aren’t necessary to perform magic. Author Donald Tyson maintains that intent and concentration, accompanied by hand gestures, hand symbols, and body postures are all that’s required. As the author notes, this is magic down to the bare bones, a new way of creating rituals, charms, and spells.
It’s true that many other authors writing about magic stress the importance of intent and focus. Tyson also explains the connection between magic and the five elements, seven planets of astrology, and the twelve signs of the zodiac, all which come with their own unique hand symbols. There are plenty of illustrations and thankfully, a table at the back of the book to view them at a glance.
What was lacking for me, in places, were concrete examples of why drawing energy from the planets, for instance, matters. The section that focused on healing and chakra centers was quite clear, but the other sections had me wondering what the point was in performing the gestures. For serious learners who are willing to put in the time and practice, I imagine the answer will become clear.
