For a decade now the world has known of the existence of the Immuno-Degenerative and Epidermal Decomposition Virus (Strain 2). The world governments and several civilian agencies have, so far, managed to keep the unimaginable from happening by keeping outbreaks under control and preventing a global pandemic. But even the best control measures seem to be falling short as outbreaks become more frequent and larger in scale.
100% of those infected with ImDED2 die. The problem is they don’t stay dead. The virus hijacks their bodies, turning them into insatiable, cannibalistic eating machines…

Zombies…

Ryan Maxwell, a retired soldier, and his wife, Victoria, a high school science teacher, have sacrificed for years to provide a good life for their family. But even the hardest working couple can run up against hard times. However, a spur-of-the-moment purchase of a lottery ticket is about to change their lives forever… And possibly save them all.

Will the Maxwells be able to take advantage of their new found wealth in time to form a buffer of safety between their family and friends and the possibility of a global zombie apocalypse? Is there enough money to buy safe passage in a world… After Z?

I'm going to count this one as a strong point against Goodreads' recommendations because what gives?

The blurb made it seem like it was going to be a slow falling apart of society featuring a very capable couple who just so happens to have won the lottery. It opened with a copious serving of conservative copium, it's not that they're bad at business it's that gas is too expensive, it's not that they're living above their means and completely financially inept to the point of buying a new car while on the brink of bankruptcy (which they apparently didn't see coming?), they just deserve all that stuff for some reason. The characters were shallow and annoying and I couldn't be bothered to stick with them.

No rating cause DNF.

Disappointed in author's racism and homophobia

Tye main character uses "faggy" and "illegals" in his internal monolog. He lies to his wife who shrugs off the gaslighting with a "teehee". Military characters constantly demean women throughout. Ugh.

I couldn’t finish this book, I can deal with swearing, but the number of racist, misogynistic, offensive terms used was beyond tolerable. The narrator was terrible on audible as well.

I really wanted to like this book, it’s premise was exactly what I was looking for, family wins the lotto and starts preparing for an apocalyptic event, but nothing was even remotely interesting. Author clearly doesn’t like middle eastern people, nor does he seem to care for women. He seems to be the type that thinks they know everything and is always right. No thank you.

Good solid start to a fresh new zombie series. Lots of zombie action mixed with the (ever present) opportunistic survivor(s) who only has nefarious intent.. . . This group certainly has a lot of challenges ahead in this horrifying, uncertain, and challenging new world.
The dogs best be A-Ok or I will be devastated. Looking forward to the release of book #2 so I can find out what happened to them as well as what is in store for these survivors. . .

The idea of winning the lottery and be able to prepare for a looming zombie apocalypse is every lover of this genre’s wet dream.
But sadly it fell flat in the execution. The whole what and how would you prepare if money isn’t a question is totally skipped.

The book was too focused on the humorous interactions between the characters and neglected any character development or depth to them.

I haven’t bitten down on a finger, and hopefully I never will, but I doubt a human would be able to bite two fingers clean off in one bite. Whilst having cat brain and crushed bones in between as described. The story is a bit unrealistic in parts. And in others presents a well thought through fictional scientific theory of the zombie virus.
Then there are the characters. I simply was indifferent to them.
Why would you throw your open handbag at someone in a parking lot?
Why would you buy a bunch of stuff on a HomeShopping Channel when you just have been told a couple of hours ago that you need to file for bankruptcy? Being described as the financially responsible of the family.
It were those small silly things, that piled up.
And the lottery ticket? Really, their anniversary numbers on a random number ticket? I can’t be the only one pointing that out. But we then later get told, this book is the opposite of a sensationalised Hollywood exploit. The author constantly rebuts himself with his statements and actions, it is not thought through. It seems to only further the plot and entertain.
So many rainbow pooping fortunate coincidences, which could have been handled more realistically and still led to the same circumstances.
Those small and unnecessary things were splattered across the book. It is robbing the book of its seriousness. It is just over the top.
As well as the stereotypical small town american family characters. They reflect their social circle perfectly. It is just that I don’t care for them. I can argue in support that it is a personal reason or that the author failed to make the characters likeable. Shouldn’t a good author be able to make even the most evil characters sympathetic?! Like Loki? I guess I haven’t decided yet, and won’t put this critic point over the characters into my rating.

The writing is below average, it switches constantly between first and third person. It had many vocabulary and grammar errors and I find that sloppy to be published like that in general.

At about 1/3 into the book the previous interesting scientific explanation nosedived and I struggled to not put the book down, out of loosing interest.

It turned into an over-bloated zombie story with two many fortunate incidences. Starring a stereotypical american lower middle glass family living in a small town, rural area. With a certain view of their world, military background, a tendency for conspiracy theories and prepping when possible. Besides Raul, everyone is white. And Raul is portrait in a derogatory stereotypical fashion.
For all the money they won and all the time they spent vacationing, they never included their family, grandparents and siblings. They never even made plans with them in case of an apocalyptic event, which they prepared for obviously, just alone.
For all the preparing time, the main character forgot about a lot of things or neglected them.
And bought a lot of stupid things.

It is described as a stand-alone, yet the ending felt unfinished.

The only plus side of this book is, one can feel the passion behind it.

DNF
Started off interesting with a rural family and the well known threat of zombies but completely went off the rails when the family won the lottery.
As a result the family hires bad ass unstoppable ex military guy and his buddies as bodyguards and quickly devolves into a by the numbers military vs. undead chest pounding, woman screwing, right leaning schlock fest.

This was a different take on a zombie apocalypse! I wish I had billions of dollars to prepare much like the Maxwell's did in this book. Of course, billions of dollars just 'cause is okay with me too hehehe. This was a fun read for me and I'm wondering if there's going to be a second book that follows... it seems unfinished.

I was gonna start this review by saying I don't understand why it has such good ratings but actually I think I do. Anyway, prejudiced and misogynistic content aside, I had held high hopes for the story based solely on the premise. I do live for a good Zombie novel, after all. Alas, this wasn't it. The narration just devolved to the point where I kept picturing Ryan Reynolds (because the male protagonist tries so hard to be funny but it's mostly just uncomfortable for everyone involved) narrating a bad movie about uninteresting characters in mostly uninteresting situations and that's a shame because I kinda like Ryan Reynolds. It also felt gross listening to how much money was spent on things like Tesla SUVs and really specific kinds of guns. 8 hours into the 11 hour audiobook I couldn't wait for it to end. There was no reason for it to be that long with so little of interest in it. I have never read such a boring, truly unremarkable zombie novel in my life. I want those hours back.

Big fat nope for me.
Casual racism, misogyny and homophobia sprinkled throughout. I passed off the first few instances as maybe the character’s voice, but every white male character was the same. It became the author’s voice. It became the tone of the story.

Enjoyed the premise of the book, an interesting take on the zombie apocalypse and preppers. Took stars off for the insane casual racism sprinkled throughout. At first I couldn’t decide if it was the author or the characters’ “voice” but my actual physical flinching in the last 10 minutes of the book at derogatory terms for Middle Easterners had me deciding it was just the author thinking he was being funny.

In After Z, author JS Patrick spins a fun story about what might happen if a prepper minded family hit it big in the lottery just before a zombie apocalypse. I notice many other reviewers are critical of this plot point but lets be honest, everyone who has ever read/watched/listened to a zompoc story has thought about what they would do in that situation. Once you imagine the prep you would need to board up your real windows, you start thinking about what you would do with unlimited resources. Patrick simply takes that thought project to the next level. His characters are three dimensional and interesting. The story is well done with a good combination of action, humor and sadness. There is plenty of danger even though the protagonists have an impenetrable bunker, with plenty of supplies and ammo stocked inside. Mathew Crow does a great job narrating the Audible version. His voice is a good fit for the characters and feel of the story, which is a bit snarky and smartass. Overall, a fun & entertaining ride.

So, so bad. Bland, dull, trying too hard to be funny, etc …

This may be the very first time I wish I could give a book Zero Stars in all my decades of reading experiences.
I’m not going to waste much time on this review.
As there really are so very many top of the line books & series out there in this post-apoc / zombie genre.
And this?? After Z by J.S. Patrick is so far from those excellent books it’s almost laughable.
“Laughable,” if having just read about half this 1st story in the series hadn’t been so painful.
It all starts out with tons of potential, which is too bad.
Because after the initial storyline begins to emerge, & following the first few jokes — the entire reading experience becomes overwhelmingly uncomfortable.
The author tries far too hard to be funny. In fact, there’s not more than a few pages here & there that are not overwrought with inept attempts at being comedic.
It’s frankly exhausting.
Thus any true substance is just …. nonexistent.
Lame joke after unfunny joke, with a plot which feels like it’s going nowhere.
Additionally, there is no real character development, nor any hint at the ability of the author regarding world building skills.
My recommendation — just skip this one.
Even if it’s free.
Just not worth ANY reader’s time nor effort to slog through. Especially, as I first stated, there are so many other stories out there which are outstanding.
All this series seems to be is …. sad & a waste of time.
A true stinker.

How quickly this promising book, lost its credibility for me. What started off as an excellent story, with great characters, realistic dialogue, and an exciting, and plausible EOTW situation, too easily descended into some truly bizarre character decisions that ruined this story for me. The ultimate in sacrificial lamb, where the need to insert an exciting side story, lead unfortunately to decisions, the characters would never have made based on what we learned about them. Characters, level headed up until a certain point making ridiculous decisions, then facing truly horrific prospects, retaining a level of humour, that no normal person could ever hold. This is truly disappointing as the story was excellent, until it wasn't. I just can't forgive, and forget stories which lack a basic level of realism.

This book was a fun read and the author very much seems to know the topic of zombie survival. I enjoyed reading this although at times, it was very comical and reminded me of drunk college days sitting around and theorizing how to survive a zombie attack if you have unlimited amounts of money.

My only one star off is the whole Scott situation. It was a bit unbelievable that they would be warned about him, then hit him in the face and assume that everything would be hunky-dory. Also, letting everyone go where they pleased in the bunker, including the armory. Who does that? Even someone not versed in survival probably wouldn't just take in survivors and be like 'Look at everything I have, help yourself!'.

Also, less dog death/harm please. (People can die but animals make me cry!)

There’s more to this book than meets the eye.

The world has changed for military veteran Ryan Baxter and his wife Vicki in more ways than one. After a failed business venture and facing bankruptcy they win $1.5b billion on the lottery. Life is good but the allure of unlimited wealth is being eaten away by the increasing frequency of Zombie outbreaks. A whole industry is built on keeping these at a manageable level until one day (Z-Day) the NFL holds a worldwide super Wednesday; all hell breaks loose and the world as we know it is no more. Fortunately for Ryan’s friends, family and us readers he has a cunning plan set in place long before Z-Day.
The pace of the book never slackens, and the reader is presented with a series of hair-raising scenarios for Ryan and his group, especially Nick and Cody’s visit to Mr G’s for some groceries. The Zombies die satisfyingly gorily but the biggest danger is other survivors. The main characters are likeable (on the whole) as well as believable, and you can relate to their hopes and fears.
The book presents an interesting conundrum by taking out a standard staple of Zombie apocalypse fiction, i.e. the day to day, hand to mouth survival of the main characters and replacing it with a well thought out and well stocked plan. Do they sit tight and wait out the apocalypse in relative luxury or take a stand and try to rebuild society little by little?

I found myself thinking of the Zombies as an analogy for the very real prospect of catastrophic climate change and the societal breakdown happening before our very eyes today, so while at one level it was a very enjoyable rip roaring romp through Zombie world, at another it asks some very important questions about our values, aims and attitudes towards each other.

Overall a very well written, enjoyable, thought provoking read and I hope there is a 2nd book on the way that continues the exciting story as well exploring the many themes and issues raised.

This is book one of the series and is not a stand-alone book.

A plague has hit the world and turned people into zombies. As with other zombie apocalypse b books and film, the humans turn into a zombie after being attacked and receiving any type of open wound or scratch. The government has named this plague the Immuno-Degenerative and Epidermal Decomposition Virus (Strain 2). The story begins with a family who has won a 55 billion dollar lottery ticket! They are on a sightseeing trip around the U.S. when the apocalypse begins. This is their journey home and the dangers they must face.

As a first book, the author does a good job introducing the characters and describing the environment. The characters are fleshed out and the reader begins to care for them quite early in the book. While the book isn't perfect, it is entertaining and is sure to hold the reader's interest. As the reader becomes more invested in the characters and plot development, the few issues with the book will cease to bother the reader, I'm sure.

This book had an interesting premise. A somewhat solid foundation for a series, with enough work done for character growth, but...

The author had one of his characters joke about how he used too many poop jokes and all I could think of was 'You got that right. Waaaaaay to overused.' There was also how many times the F word was used. Seriously, I've put in time in some pretty heavily male dominated work environments, and I have absolutely never heard other guys swear so much unless the person they were swearing at had done something that had truly endangered someone's life. As another reviewer put, it was like the dialogue was written by a fourteen year old who was writing how he thought a strong man talks.

Another gripe, and this one is only minor- but the use of pop culture. Early in the book, one of the main characters saves the lives of the victims of a store robbery. What were the names of the two Sheriff's Deputies that responded to the call? Rick and Shane a la The Walking Dead... Yeah.

Overall, good read.

This was a fantastic story that captivated me after only a few pages read, then managed to hold me captive all the way through to the end. So why only 3 stars, you might ask? Quite simply, the sheer amount of errors in grammar and spelling continually distracted me, as they occurred far too often. To me, the novels you write should be treated as a work of art; something you anxiously look forward to sharing with others, because it is a creation of your mind and should always be something you are extremely proud of. To put out work like this that would not seem to have been edited in any way, shape or form comes off as something this author (J.S. Patrick) did not take that joy of accomplishment and creation to heart, and simply just tossed it out there as-is. What a shame. This story was so refreshingly new compared to most other zombie novels: get bitten, turn, eat, get bitten, turn, eat (rinse-lather-repeat)… Perhaps I should have tried the published book, because certainly that would have been edited and I'd be leaving a 5-star rating, which is what this book actually does deserve, minus the aggravating, constant grammar errors. I would have loved to have had an ending worthy of the tale told, to go along with the author hiring an editor, but by then I was just beyond caring.

Winning the lottery and building the ultimate apocalypse bunker! I loved the idea behind this book. This was definitely not the most well written book I’ve ever read but I think it’s a great start for an author who has a fun imagination. My constructive criticism-not that I’m a pro writer but I love to read, I would have liked to see more character development and dynamics, less repetitiveness, more plot development and maybe edited more for grammatical errors. There was a lot thrown into this story that could have been divulged on with better development of character personalities and interactions and setting up for some of the peak moments throughout. I will definitely read more of what this author writes and I hope to see more great ideas and hopefully growing and improvement on his writing skills. I am by no means offering a bad review, I think this author has a lot of potential, I enjoyed a lot about this book and I look forward to future releases.

Gives youDifferent?

Zombie book but different. Lots of action, plenty of zombies but not the same angst & trepidation from other stories.
I enjoyed the characters . Ryan & Vickie. Michael & Kayla,Nick.
The country has been having sporadic outbreaks of zombies, but nothing to worry about. Ryan & Vickie on their worst day will have to file bankruptcy. According to their lawyer they have no other choice.
On the way home, despondent, but alive they stop to get gas & Ryan buys a lottery ticket. And of course, they win.! And you guessed it, the zombies have risen.
I liked the character development. Discussing something about who they are.
Gives more meaning. This is an easy apocalypse. With the "Bunker" Ryan has provided for an easy confinement.
Good reading, quite a few off color words, doesn't bother me.
Good job...Will be waiting for the next!😄

So, another zombie book. I've probably read them all, or close, so I wasn't anticipating much when I started. I was pleasantly surprised that it took me in pretty quickly, I wanted to know more. This is a new spin on an overworked market so I appreciated that although it made things too easy for all the characters. So while it was fun, I did alot of rolling of my eyes and chuckling. When the author gives us information or describes a scene he does well. All the history and biology of the virus was super interesting. He loses steam when it comes to dialogue. It felt forced and relied tol heavily on bad humor. The language didn't bother me a bit, the political tid bits he threw in also made me roll my eyes and chuckle a bit. I'll be reading the next one to see what happens and if things improve because I at least was entertained enough to keep reading.

A Zompoc winner! This title has been in my library for a really long time. Not sure why I delayed so long in listening to it.
The beginning was a little different with a slightly unique take on the zombie origins.
I really liked this story. I liked the characters. Although there were some cliché elements such as a lot of of ex soldiers with super soldier, survival expertise. It was still a really fun zombie apocalypse story.
I don’t need zombie originality if the story is fast paced with engaging characters that you want to root for .
And it was a fun read, there were a few somewhat crude moments, but for the most part it was entertaining and well paced with very little slag or drag time.
I like the narrator and thought they did a good job and I will definitely move on to part two book 2, whatever.

Ryan and Victoria have fallen on hard times and it looks like they will lose their business. On a spur of the moment thought while getting gas they bought a lotto ticket and they find out later they have won. Victoria wants to save the money but gives in to Ryan so he can splurge some of it, what she doesn't know is what he does with the money will probably save them when money won't mean anything.

This is a great take on the zombie apocalypse and how one family deals with it. There is non-stop action that will (if you are like me and have the audible) start taking the long way home so you can listen to more, as narrator Matthew Crow brings the book to life in my ears. He takes this wonderful book and puts voices to the characters, it makes the book that much more special.

I've had this book in my wish list for a while. It turned out to be a pretty good listen...........however the way the author made it to where Everything just worked out in favor of the survivors was just Too convenient for me. This guy was able to build the bunker, and stock it with ALL those supplies in 18 months? Over 100 vehicles? A FULL operating room? Hundreds of THOUSANDS of rounds? Enough food for 40 years? He should've been on Somebodies radar! I mean, Homeland should've had him on the top of their list! Everything just fell into place little too smoothly for me. Also, his child was a veterinarian, and they Just so happen to rescue TWO doctors, PLUS have the leader of the zombie strike force as Head of security for him and his family?????

Its a good zombie book to listen to. It makes you think what qould I do in those situations. I like the diverse characters and their personalities.
People (left leaning woman) are giving low scores saying there is to much talk about diffent types of guns ,racism & misogmy.

Not true, One of the main male characters is ex military and he has old army buddies that help his family, they use military jargon To dehumanize the zombies, when fighting them. There are strong female characters that come along in the other books. One of the main male characters is Honduran.

I would put this book up there with R.R. Hywood's The Undead.

Looking towards part 6

Keep up the good work J.S. Patrick

I have always loved everything spooky which includes my deep love for Zombies. But I have never read any actual zombies books. This book happened to be our next book club submission, so I was looking forward to giving this a try. It did not disappoint. It was a very fun read and I felt like it had some very personable characters. The plot was like any other zombie movie, but I think the characters made it more enjoyable to read. I think there were times when I got a little confused on who's POV we were referring to on some chapters, but once I caught on, I was set back on track. The ending was a little meh to me, but hopefully the second book has more action. Overall, it was a fun and quick read :)
