Sayings of the Buddha: Reflections for Every Day

Rate this book

The Buddha taught a down-to-earth wisdom that is still deeply relevant today. This carefully chosen selection of the Buddha's thoughts and teachings, compiled by William Wray, presents one quotation for each day of the year. Each and every quotation brings fresh insights, helping to free us from the deep conditioning of our minds and pointing us towards revolutionary changes in our lives on a personal, social and spiritual level. The book also contains a stimulating introduction to the Buddha, as well a short biography and accessible analysis of the discourses.

Many of the sayings included here are drawn from the very latest translations of the Buddhist sutras. It is hoped that by reflecting on them on a regular basis, individuals will take significant steps towards enlightenment.

I've been meaning to share these pictures for about a month now so if you follow me on instagram you'll already have seen my latest book folding project which I made as a birthday present for my Mum. She is obsessed with all things Buddha so it was the obvious choice to make when she asked me to design a book fold for her.

I'm really pleased with how it turned out and I love the way the patterned pages from inside the book frame the book fold. My mum was thrilled with her birthday present too, she's just got to decide on a permanent home for it - she keeps sending me pictures of it in different places around the house LOL.

What do you think? I have so many other book fold designs I want to make, I've even made the patterns for most of them but I need to find the time to sit down and actually fold them.

As a Christian myself, I wish Christian theology had more acknowledgement that our evil desires and our evil actions stem from our inability to master self. I enjoy the accountability of Buddhist philosophy that says you ultimately control how you will respond to a situation and how you let things affect you. Personally, I've always thought Christians give Satan TOO much credit and attention. Theologically speaking, he didn't create evil. He succumbed to this empty nothingness that is the opposite of love, which we call evil.

The part of Buddhist philosophy I don't find entirely convincing, is the abandonment of all our passions. Not all passion is evil passion such as anger, hatred, and recklessness. There are beautiful passions as well such as love, joy, creativity, etc... For me, the path to ending suffering is not so much about excluding your passion, but about learning how to harness your passion and master it for the sake of goodness and tranquility.

Content was good, but there was too little of it. Snack that leaves you hungry.

It did tend to get repetitive, although this is to be expected where there is a finite amount of principles over 300 pages. That said, I felt deeply moved by most of them (some I had to read a few times to understand but this could be due to direct translations). Wonderful principles to live by and I quite enjoyed the introductory sections.

A good introduction

This was a good introduction to the wisdom of Buddha. It was instructive and well designed. Read it with care.
