In this heartwarming second-chance romance, a woman returns home and discovers that, when it comes to finding love, there's no place like home.
When a romance gone wrong lands reporter Dakota Jones in the pages of the tabloids, her rising star crashes and burns. Instead of getting the weekend anchor job she'd been promised, she's promptly shown the door. Which leaves her one option: return home to lick her wounds, eat lemon meringue pie, and plot her comeback while actively avoiding the man who once broke her heart.
Dexter Roberts made a huge mistake when he walked away from Dakota, and he's regretted it ever since. So when Dakota returns to Holly Grove Island to regroup and decide what's next, Dex can't pass up the opportunity to win back the love of his life. Wonderful, light-hearted romance!
Dakota Jones returns home to Holly Grove Island after her big dreams of becoming a news anchor comes to an abrupt halt. With her reputation in tatters, Dakota is reluctant to expound on the reasons behind her sudden return.
Despite that, Dakota is happy to spend some time with her father, and to touch base with her best friend again. On the other hand, she's absolutely dreading the inevitable run in with Dexter, the man who once broke her heart, the man she’s never really gotten over. When the two finally do meet again, it is as Dakota feared- she's just as attracted to Dexter now as she was all those years ago...
With Dakota back in town, Dexter hopes he can convince her to at least forgive him for the way he ended things between them. It would be even better if he could convince her that he still loves her. Unfortunately, Dakota has made it clear she’s not interested in anything beyond friendship and that her stay on Holly Grove Island is only temporary.
Can Dexter change her mind?
To my knowledge, I have not read anything by Reese Ryan before now. Reading the first book in her new series, feels like a great place to start.
The author did a good job of setting the scene, balancing the introduction of the characters with the romance, and created some great chemistry between Dexter and Dakota. I loved the tension between these two, and of course, most people know I’m a sucker for second chance romances. There is a little angst, with some surprising developments and revelations, but nothing too emotionally taxing, which just happened to be what I was in the mood for.
Overall, this a is a wonderful, light and easy love story, and a solid start to a new series-perfect for the beach or poolside this summer!!
Dakota Jones is an investigative reporter whose career in broadcast news was finally starting to soar when it crashed because of a messy scandal. She leaves New York and returns home to Holly Grove Island, her small hometown in the Outer Banks, to hide out among family and friends and figure out her next move. Dakota doesn’t tell anyone the real reason she lost her job, unwilling to face the shame of her downfall. She had no idea that Dexter Roberts had also returned to the island, her first love who broke her heart in high school. It’s clear she still has strong feelings for him, and he for her, but can’t forgive him for their breakup.
Dexter is now an executive with a hotel resort and he’s never gotten over Dakota, even though he was the one who abruptly ended their relationship when he went off to college. He’s trying hard to at least develop a friendship but she’s not having it. Both are keeping secrets as they struggle to create a new “friendship” given that it’s a small island and they’re seeing each other daily, especially after Dakota accepts a job that guarantees that. I liked both of them as she’s smart, talented and devoted to her father who loves her unconditionally. He’s committed to his family, too, which is one of the reasons he returned to the island. And, Dexter is a really good man whose great at what he does and is full of regrets about Dakota.
First books in a new series have the responsibility of creating and developing not only the characters who will be part of it going forward but the community and setting that is an integral part of the stories. I loved the island community with its long history and stalwart residents who are passionate about maintaining its character. Dakota and Dexter have lots of friends and family that are strong secondary relationships that helped make this a lovely story. I liked the world created here in addition to the second chance romance between these two. Dakota’s unwillingness to be honest about her return bugged me but that was part of her identity that she had to confront and resolve. Dexter was a dream, despite his past and I just knew there was more to that. I really enjoyed the story, especially the romance past and present, and am looking forward to returning to this diverse and close knit town.
I knew within a few chapters I was going to enjoy this second chance romance. It's nice when you immediately click with the characters because then it's easy to feel invested in their happiness. Dakota and Dex are both good, kind-hearted people and they had effortless chemistry together. Can't wait to read more books in this series featuring characters who had supporting roles in this one.
Let's face it, most romances follow the same formula but in this crazy world we live in, I actually love that I know what I'm in for when I pick up a book in this genre. Dakota Jones was living in NYC and due to a public scandal, she is out of a job. So she goes to stay with her father in her hometown of Holly Grove Island as she tries to figure out what to do next. Dexter Roberts was her high school boyfriend and he is very happy Dakota is back in town. It's been years since he broke up with her and he's regretted it ever since. Will Dakota be open to giving her heart to Dexter again or is there no such thing as a second chance?
Dakota and Dexter are BIPOC characters and I want to point that out because it's not mentioned in the publisher synopsis and the book cover is just a picture of a house so it's not obvious. I was pretty happy to find out there's a diverse cast of characters in this story because it's not something I come across very often with mass market paperback romances. (I'm referring to the smaller size books that you typically can find at a supermarket and the bargain prices lure so many of us shoppers.)
Likable characters with chemistry, and a picturesque setting certainly make this book a worthwhile read if you enjoy romances.
I won a free copy of this book in a sweepstakes by the publisher, Forever. All views expressed are my honest opinion.
Second Chance on Cypress Lane by Reese Ryan is the first book in the new contemporary romance Holly Grove Island series. With the title of this series I’m under the impression that the common thread between books will be the location in the series. This first book did read like it could be a standalone so it would make sense the next in the series will feature new characters.
Second Chance on Cypress Lane was a great title for this series as it does feature a second chance romance. Dakota Jones had left her home in Holly Grove Island to chase a career as an on screen reporter. Unfortunately for Dakota though she has lost her dream job a the station she was working for and is not sure what will come next.
Dakota decided the place she needed to be to heal from her set back was back home in Holly Grove. After returning to the island Dakota did try her best to avoid the ex that once broke her heart but Dexter Roberts kept making it impossible to avoid him and before long those old feelings came rushing back for both Dakota and Dexter.
First I want to mention that my review copy did not contain the bonus novella which was kind of disappointing since I enjoy Annie Rains. Second Chance on Cypress Lane however was a lovely story to help get over my disappointment though, I loved meeting Dexter and Dakota and did find myself engrossed in their story. Dakota just coming out of a relationship gave me pause but since it was a second chance at an old one I let that slide away from my mind. So with a lovely setting (I want to move into the house on the cover!!) and an engaging story I rather enjoyed this opener.
I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.
Dakota Jones, considered one of the elite investigative reporters is on her way to becoming a lead news anchor in New York. But then a foolish mistake — an affair with a married Italian director causes a huge scandal. The scandal headlining all of the tabloid papers and media, causes Dakota to be ultimately fired and blacklisted.
Dejected and with no other avenues of job prospects in New York, Dakota heads back home to Holly Grove Island, North Carolina. There in Holly Grove, she has to face her biggest heartbreak, Dexter Roberts. Dexter has always regretted the breakup with Dakota. And now that Dakota is back, perhaps it’s time for a second chance.
Second Chance on Cypress Lane is a wonderfully crafted contemporary romance novel. The cast of characters play well into the story and its splendid North Carolina backdrop. You’ll fall in love with Dexter (Dex) and develop a warm and personal attachment to some of the minor players in the story.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this novel with the exception that I felt it was too drawn-out as far as the Dexter-Dakota relationship goes. Nevertheless, Second Chance on Cypress Lane is still a great read and perfect for contemporary romance aficionados. Four stars. I really liked it.
I received a paperback copy of the book from Forever (Grand Central Publishing.) The review herein is completely my own and contains my honest thoughts and opinions.
Dakota and Dexter got their second chance and this sweet little town got the couple they loved back together again. This was a really good story with some interesting twists and turns. I’m looking forward to reading more of the series!
I love, love, love a good small town romance. And if you set it in a southern town or a coastal town, any place with quirky characters who are all up in each other’s business or one of a kind festivals? You might as well buy me a ticket there because I’ve already packed my suitcases (in my head) and started planning how soon I can move to this imaginary place. All of this to say, Reese Ryan has created a cozy little town in the Outer Banks of North Carolina and I can’t wait to read more about this town and its characters.
When small town girl made good returns to town with her tail tucked between her legs, no one in town bats an eye. Dakota’s father and her best friend, Sinclair, are overjoyed at her return, and so is her high school boyfriend, Dexter. Of course Dakota still has the hots for him, though she won’t admit it to anyone, not even herself, and he has the hots for her, but they both try to play it cool. In the hands of a less experienced author, this storyline could have been predictable and just a little cheesy. Reese Ryan, however, doesn’t make the focal point of the story about will they or won’t they.
Our girl Dakota gets to focus on family issues, friendship issues, employment issues. What I’m saying is she’s a grown woman whose life doesn’t revolve around whether or not she’s going to hook up with a man. But if she does? When she does? Steamy! 😅😅😅
Can you tell how much I enjoyed Second Chance? I started reading it on my lunch hour and skipped TV watching so I could finish it the same day. Thanks to @readforeverpub for sending this one my way. I saw so many potential couple matchups while reading it and I’m so looking forward to returning to Holly Grove Island in 2021.
If you like small town romance this book has all those cute things you'll enjoy. It's a small beach side town, there's a big Forth of July festival everyone attentions, cozy local eateries, homestyle food, small town gossip, cute dates, and neighbor's who know each other so well.
When Dakota Jones run's back to her quiet beachside home town of Holly Grove Island after a bad breakup and scandal leaves her jobless; she ends up reconnecting with her old friends and her ex boyfriend Dexter Roberts who has made a career for himself in the hospitality business. With Dexter helping open up a new resort he helps her secure a job marketing a new resort in town. Dakota and Dexter must work close together to get the town on board and cooperative with this new venture.
At the same time Dakota must confront her past and discover that her mother's career aspirations may not be her own career aspirations.
This romance is sure to be one to help you beat the winter blues.
Small island town Secrets and Scandals Sprinkling of Steamy Romance
I just loved reading this diverse contemporary romance read set in North Carolina’s Outer Banks - a small community, and a haven for second chances for both Dakota and Dexter. In this immersive read, I found myself getting lost in the story and imagining myself part of the community, the goings-on about the town, the slew of secondary characters that are just so fun to read about. I thought the writing was beautiful - it focused on life’s imperfections and hardships, and how to move forward, importance of family, and the support we all need. It gives a lot of hope and very realistic too that I related to very much. Simply enjoyable read I recommend!
There is nothing like coming home - home is truly where the heart is.
This book was just the right combo of sweet and funny with a little bit of steam mixed in. I love the characters and the little community, which I’m excited to get back to when the second book comes out. If you’re looking for a new contemporary romance series, I highly recommend starting with Dakota and Dexter.
I received an advanced copy in exchange for my review.
Thank you to Forever Publishing for my complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
I enjoyed this heartwarming second chance romance between former high school sweethearts, Dakota and Dexter. Dakota returns home after sixteen years in NYC to Holly Grove Island, North Carolina after a scandal with a married man. It's only meant to be a temporary stop until she figures out her next move. But, her dad's health issues means her stay will be longer than she originally intended.
Staying in her hometown longer means running into her high school boyfriend, Dexter. He dumped her after his first semester in college claiming he needed to see other people. She hasn't gotten over that as she was ready to go to his college (instead of her beloved NYU) and change he life's goals. The longer she stays, the closer she gets to Dexter and soon she needs to figure out what her career and her life aspirations are.
I love second chance romances and this one was excellent. I love that the characters all have a history together. The secondary characters were all well written and fun. There is some light steam in the second half of the book, but nothing too heavy. I have never read this author before, but I hope to return to Holly Grove Island and read Sinclair's story.
This was a heartfelt and sweet second chance romance! I loved the emotion, drama, and passion between Dexter and Dakota. It was a really entertaining story that made my heart happy!
I loved Dexter and Dakota and learning about their history. I liked the details of their youth and what happened between them and where they're at now in the present. Dexter was such a sweet guy, he seemed to wear his heart on his sleeve and I liked how he was trying to reconnect with Dakota. I loved Dakota, she was trying to get her life back on track because of a minor scandal and I liked that perseverance. There’s a lot of tension between them as well as underlying passion and chemistry as they reconnect and work through their feelings because things aren't always as they seem. I loved the pull between them as they reconnect, there was a nice slow burn happening.
There was a really great cast of characters introduced and I see the foundation for future stories that have been set up. I not only liked the healing taking place between Dakota and Dexter but also with her best friend Sinclair, they have a really great bond. There's were also some really nice moments with Dakota’s dad that choked me up. The storytelling was really well done with an excellent build. I liked the third person, dual POV and thought it flowed well and had really good details. There were some fun, playful scenes as well that brought in some really entertaining moments.
I thought Second Chance on Cypress Lane was a great introduction to a new series. A sweet and fun story full of healing that will fill your heart and leave you smiling.
When investigative reporter Dakota Jones' personal life implodes, taking her reputation down with it, she finds her career ruined and her profession credentials in tatters. With no job and no prospects, she returns to her small North Carolina hometown to regroup and spend time with her dad while trying to avoid her first love.
Dexter Roberts has always regretted letting Dakota go. When she returns to the island, he has to try to get her back, knowing she's the love of his life. But now that he's temporarily her boss and relegated to the friend zone, convincing Dakota to give him a second chance won't be easy.
This was a sweet second chance story, but the incredibly slow burn here did make it difficult for me to stay interested in the story. There was so much enumeration from both main characters of all the reasons they couldn't be together that it just became repetitive for me. Dakota's rather callous and nonsensible reasoning made her a bit unlikeable for me as well. Dex was a charming hero, but it took too long for these two to have a real, mature conversation and it just baffled me that Dakota would still be so bitter and hateful about it after so long. Reading high school-esque drama with people in their mid-thirties was a bit odd for me and I wanted more maturity from the main characters. Overall, I enjoyed the small town feel and the North Carolina charm in this one, I just got a bit bogged down in the slow pace, although the characters were sweet together.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I'm a huge Reese Ryan fan and Second Chance on Cypress Lane on cemented why. This second chance romance/reunion love story had everything--wonderful and relatable characters, dashes of humor, a perfect small town secondary cast of characters, a beautiful sense of family, dashes of humor, a wealth of emotion, passion and the loveliest of romances.
After Dakota's career crashes and burns, she returns home and it's inevitable that she'll run into the man she loved and who broke her heart. And it would be too easy to resent Dex for doing so until we discover his sacrificial reasons, and you love him and his beautiful heart. I so rooted for these two, and joining them on their journey back to each other was such a joy that was a pleasure to lose myself in. Reese Ryan really wove a gorgeous story and I can't wait to read the next book in this series!
Thank you Forever for my review copy. . It’s no secret that I love cozy Romance. It’s no secret that I love books based in my beloved North Carolina. Add these two together and what do you get? A new favorite series. . I am absolutely smitten with this sweet little town and their sweet residents. Bring in a second chance romance and I’m sold. Dex & Dakota were delightful. I loved the sprinkling of steaminess... . All in all, this is a series I will absolutely return to.
Investigative reporter Dakota Jones worked all her life to be a news anchor in New York. But trusting the wrong man trew a wrench in her plan and put it temporarily on hold. Dakota didn't return to her hometown since her mother died five years ago. Now she's back in her South Carolina small town, waiting for the scandal to pass so she can return to the Big Apple. Our heroine doesn't want to tell her father the real reason she lost her job and she wants even less to cross path with her high school sweetheart. But circumstances conspired so she ended up working for the man who broked her heart when he dumped her after his first semester in college. Maybe it's time that Dexter Roberts, the guy who might have a career as a professional football player if not for a knee injury, tell her the real reason why he broke up with her back in the days. And while trying to deal with his two jobs as assitant and director of resorts in Holly Grove Island, Dexter plan on asking for a second chance, or at least, get back to being her friend again. But is there really a choice when there's still lingering attraction and feelings between them?
It was easy to see that despite the time and the distance, Dakota and Dexter still cared about each other and that's why their chemistry felt so real and their second chance romance was so satisfying. I also enjoyed the friendship between Dakota and Sinclair, how they also rekindled the relationship even if they lost touch after school and I'm so happy to know her friend is getting her HEA next😃.
I really do love small towns and the characters they bring. It was just such a charming setting. And of course in this small town, Dakota and Dexter just keep running into each other. How else could this second chance romance go? This was definitely a cute and cozy romance and I think readers will really enjoy it!
Ryan delivers a super sweet read. Dakota comes home to Holly Grove Island after making some bad decisions. Dexter is eager to see her. Years before he had shattered her heart for her own best interests, but she didn't know that. I liked the setting and the community, replete with the one nuisance character, Angela, who serves a purpose. Dexter is a super sweetie. His devotion to Dakota is complete and that's rare in real life or fiction. I almost feel like he loved her more than she loved him, but he just expressed it more. I love, the cover art for the book. It's a feel, good, read, with a great ending. Thanks to NetGalley and Forever (Grand Central Publishing) for the early copy.
This was a quick, fast paced light heart read. Dakota has just lost her dream job in NYC. She did not know the man she was seeing was married, and it was all over the tabloids. So she is now labeled as a home-wrecker and others are questioning how she could not have know he was married! She left the big city and has returned to her childhood home, and father with her tail between her legs, that is just until this all blows over.
Holly Grove Island doesn’t take long to get the rumor mill going, and soon everyone knows that Dakota is back, along with her ex high school sweet heart Dexter. The one she lost, the one who broke her heart and the one she hopes to avoid while she is here. But we all know that is not going to happen. It seems that everyone is trying to get them two back together, is for old times sake?
Knowing she needs to help her father with expenses, she takes a position to be the new PR person for the local resort that is opening, but this is just temporary. She will be going back to NYC. Her first day in the office, and she finds out that her boss just got a new boss appointed and it is none other than Dexter. Now she not only has to report to Nick, but Dexter. How will this work? Why does it seem fate has something else in mind?
Can the two work together as professionals to get the resort up and running, with all grumblings from the locals not happy this will create a tourist attraction, or will something else intervene to create an uncomfortable working environment? Will the past stay in the past, or can the truth of what really happened be revealed at least with no hurt feelings?
Thank you to Forever Publishing for the free book. I would be up to reading more in the Dexter/Dakota saga, as well as other characters in the town.
Second Chance on Cypress Lane is the first book of the Holly Grove Island series by Reese Ryan. It is a warm and friendly contemporary novel with some nice sexy bits. Dakota Jones returns to her hometown after an embarrassing love affair severely damages her career as a television reporter. While she loves returning to her father and her best friend, she is reluctant to encounter her teenage love that rejected her years before. Little does she know that Dexter Roberts has long been regretting how he treated her and still harbors a love for her. The small town where they live is quaint and charming, with everyone knowing everyone's business. Some nice secondary characters add to the atmosphere. Dakota and Dexter have quite a few feelings and issues to work through to achieve their HEA.
This was a really nice story. The conflict seemed a bit drawn out, but I liked how the main characters matured. Their romance seemed genuine. The author did a good job of preparing us for subsequent books.
2.5 stars. This is not a bad book at all, but it had nothing pulling me in. This book follows our main character Dakota. She just lost her news anchor job because of a personal scandal in her love life (that I felt was way over dramatized, but thats not the point) so she goes back to her home town to see her dad. Her mom died and her sister is married and lives far away, so she and her dad are a cute little team. When she gets home she sees he's much thinner and has a health issue he's been hiding (diabetes). She also runs into her high school love, Dexter. He broke her heart 17 years ago and she still has a lot of bitterness. They keep running into each other and end up working together. They can't get too close because of company policy, but he's pining for her (even 17 years later). They were 17 when they broke up and they're 34 now. It seems a little bit of a stretch that feelings would be so raw on both sides, but thats not my complaint about this book. This just felt so flat. And the whole book, past and present, revolve around lack of communication and Dexter trying to make decisions for Dakota. Everyone hid things from her and treated her like she wasn't an adult and thats so annoying. I wish we would've gotten some time with them when they were first experiencing their first loves together because then maybe I would've cared more, but as it is, BLEH.
Second Chance on Cypress Lane has two of my favorite tropes. Our first visit to Holly Grove island explores a 17-year separation without the truth of why; Will love prevail?
Dakota Jones's well-planned life of becoming a weekend anchor shatters due to a relationship scandal that goes viral. It wasn't enough that she lost the job, but she was blacklisted in the industry. She takes the opportunity to come home to Holly Grove Island to heal and refocus. New challenges come after being reunited with her best friend, father, and in the same town with the one person that couldn't be replaced. Not wanting to be deemed a failure in the eyes of those she loves and left to pursue a career that ending in a life-altering scandal.
Always the protector and fixer, Dexter Roberts made a critical mistake when he pushed Dakota away in the name of protecting her from a life of regret. When it looks like a second chance is in his sites, a permanent executive position, and having to tell the truth about the breakup, he finds his future looks daunting once again. Everything would need must be exposed before moving forward.
It's unfortunate for both Dakota and Dexter that parent interference shaped the lives. The secrets, guilt, bribery, and lies derail their destiny.
I enjoyed how the author crafted this small-town, and in Reese Ryan's fashion, we get a good dose of family drama. I am looking forward to the next visit to Holly Grove Lane.
This was a lovely second chance romance between 2 lovely people, who fell victim to a meddling parent. After Dakota's life she built for herself in NY goes up in smoke, she comes home to lick her wounds and figure out her next move. What she doesn't expect is that her father is having some health issues, and just didn't want to burden her with it. Dexter is so excited to see Dakota, so that he can make amends for how things ended between them. He has regretted it, and isn't going to let her go. There is proper groveling in this novel, and I really enjoyed it from start to finish! Not terribly steamy, but what we get is glorious!
Second Chance on Cypress Lane is an uplifting, charming tale that takes you into the life of the kind, heartbroken Dakota Jones who after being shattered by a scandalous affair returns home to the idyllic Holly Grove Island to rebuild her self esteem, repair old friendships, help out her widowed father, and hopefully hide from the one man who broke her heart to pieces seventeen years ago.
The writing is sentimental and warm. The characters are multilayered, supportive, and endearing. And the plot, using flashbacks to the past is an enticingly nostalgic tale full of secrets, friendship, tension, chemistry, tender moments, self-reflection, and second-chance love.
Second Chance on Cypress Lane is the first novel I’ve read by Ryan but it won’t be my last. It’s an entertaining, enjoyable, satisfying treat and I can’t wait to read what happens in this small North Carolina community next.
Thank you to Forever & Grand Central Publishing for providing me with a copy in exchange for an honest review.
Second Chance on Cypress Lane by Reese Ryan is amazing! This story follows a young woman who lost her career and love interest all in one swoop. It also features her journey back home and a rekindle of past romance with her best friend. But she's afraid of heartbreak again and isn't sure giving the first man who broke her heart a second chance. However, with their time spent together while she's home brings them closer and old feelings resurface. Hope, second chances, new beginnings, and family are the wonderful themes readers can find in this book. I was in love the moment I met all the characters. Family and friends of the protagonists made this novel a more heartfelt and emotionally charged tale. Overall, I am impressed by Reese Ryan's talent and characterization. Her storytelling skills are impeccable. Second Chance on Cypress Lane was the first of her books that I have read. I cannot wait to read more by this writer.
I received this copy from the publisher. This is my voluntary review.
Why have I not read anything by Reese Ryan yet because I adored this book! The second chance romance between Dakota and Dexter was so sweet and I could not put this book down. I couldn’t wait to get to the end to see what would happen, but I also didn’t want it to end because I wasn’t ready to say goodbye to these characters.
After a scandal ruins her job opportunities in New York, Dakota heads home to North Carolina to reevaluate things and spend time with her father. The one person she hopes not to see when she is home is her ex-boyfriend Dexter who broke her heart 17 years ago. But of course Dakota can’t avoid him and Dexter is hoping for a second chance or at least for Dakota to forgive him for the break-up that broke his heart as well.
Dexter quickly became one of my favorite male characters in a book. Once you find out why he originally broke up with Dakota, you can’t help but fall in love with him. He was so sweet and he was willing to risk his own happiness to ensure Dakota got everything she wanted. I loved that this book offered both Dakota and Dexter’s perspective on things, I feel it just adds so much more to the story when you know what both characters are thinking. The ending to me was perfect and I hope we’ll be catching up with Dakota and Dexter in Ryan’s next book in this series in 2021!
Thank you to NetGalley and Forever for an advance digital copy in exchange for an honest review.
