Her best friend in the whole world is moving to Solihull because one of her dads has a new job there. Solihull?! Where even is that?! Cookie begs her parents for a pet to fill the void but they have given her an absolute NO. It would be way too expensive and way way too messy.
But Cookie has never been a fan of the word 'no' so she visits the pet shop anyway and sets her heart on the sweetest cutest kitteniest kitten ever: Bluey. But then . . . DISASTER! The most ANNOYING boy she's ever met in her entire nine years goes into the pet shop, buys Bluey and renames her Nigel! And then he joins her year at school! And if that wasn't bad enough, he moves in next door to her. AAAAGGGGHHHHH!
But it's not all bad . . . Cookie gets the chance to go on her favourite TV show, Brainbusters. It's only a chance though - she'll have to win the school science competition first. It shouldn't be too hard . . . all she has to do is keep her head down, and not get too over-excited. Unfortunately that's not Cookie's strong point.
Nine-year-old Cookie is upset, her best friend Keziah is moving away, the Kitten that she wants has just been bought and the person who bought it has moved in next door to her and has changed the kitten’s name from Bluey to Nigel. He also has joined her class too. Plus she has the worst teacher again this year – Who gets the same teacher two years in a row!!
When it is announced that her favourite game show Brainbusters has reached out to her school and offered them two places she is determined to get one of the spaces, but wouldn’t you know it, the new boy is also extremely clever too.
Cookie and the Most Annoying Boy in the World is a wonderfully funny book featuring an amazing young girl who thinks that the world is against her. There are plenty of hilarious moments, from the time she decided to try catching a wild bird so she could keep it as a pet and ended up with a pigeon flying around her house to using a whole pack of Mentos in her volcano experiment which makes it exploded and covers her in Lemonade.
Throughout there are lots of illustrations that are very comical and make you visualise the scene perfectly. This is an amazing book that is not only very funny but shows you what it’s like to be nine-years-old, including friendships and rivalry at that age.
I can see this book being a big hit and I do hope that it is going to be the first in a series as Cookie is such an amazing young girl that she needs more stories.
Everything is going wrong, her best friend is moving away, her parents won't let her have a pet, and she's forced to sit next to the new boy at school. How is Cookie going to survive the year??? Luckily there's a chance to go on her favourite TV show, Brainbusters. All she has to do is put her science knowledge to good use and come up with the best science project. It'll be easy for the smartest girl in the class.
Of course, not everything goes smoothly and she finds herself in constant competition with the most annoying boy in the world, who unfortunately happens to be quite clever too. But maybe that means there's some hope for him yet!
You just can't help liking Cookie. She's tough and funny and impulsive, but never ashamed to admit when she's wrong. I think she's a wonderful role model for girls of all ages, including any adults reading the book! While being easy to read and understand, the book isn't childish at all. I think it will be just as enjoyable for adults reading aloud to younger kids.
Cookie! is so much fun to read. It's full of wonderful little doodles throughout the book that add to the humour and there's a great appendix at the end with instructions for all the experiments they do in the book. You'll want to try them all.
Ha! A very funny book! I realised that, this book has a recipe to make pancakes!! Mmmmmmmm! I really love pancakes! The happiest part was that she got a tick mark on TV quiz show Brainbusters despite giving wrong answers. The saddest part was that her best friend, Keziah is leaving from Ealing to Solihull. The funniest part was that she and Jake were making a lemonade fountain, but it got splattered all over them! So, I rate this a five-star.
Meet a character with an unforgettable voice, loving parents, a desperate need for a pet, a great best friend and a nemesis who just happens to be the most annoying boy in the world. I really enjoyed this adventure through Cookie's day-to-day mishaps, enhanced by the cute doodles. This is going to be a hit in my Year 3 classroom!
Nine-year-old Cookie lives in Ealing with her parents, Abed and Rozie, and her sisters, Nahid and Roubi. Cookie’s life is falling apart and despite getting pooped on by a pigeon she is not having any luck. Her best friend Keziah is leaving because her dad has gotten a new job in Solihull, wherever that is!
When a new boy arrives in Cookie’s neighbourhood things go from bad to worse. He buys the cat she wants from the pet shop, he arrives at her school and sits in the seat next to her that she had reserved for Keziah, and he ruins her debut appearance on her favourite TV show Brainbusters. And to top things off his parents have only gone and bought the house next door to Cookie’s!
Can Cookie stop her life from crumbling and make a new friend…
This is a silly, laugh-out-loud fall off your chair read. Best not read in quiet reading time at school as readers will struggle to keep the giggles to themselves. Any book that references one of my favourite practical jokes/science experiments is onto a winner with me - who doesn’t love mentos and fizzy drink!
Cookie is a brilliant character. She is over the top, has a wild imagination and is full of excitement and drama is never far away. Cookie is a BAME Bangladeshi girl with a passion for science and it is great that some readers are able to see themselves represented in a book. I like that elements of Bangladeshi culture or woven into the narrative without being over the top.
The school setting and daily challenges of school life will be totally relatable to readers as will the important messages on friendship and jealousy. Huq captures school life perfectly. The excitement of the first day back - the new shoes, the new haircuts, the new teacher (or the old teacher in Cookie’s case). There is no time to easily settle back into school on the first day though, there’s learning to be done. And then there’s those parents who have taken the children on a summer holiday during school time as it is cheaper to holiday out of the school holidays.
Brilliantly written and illustrated by Konnie Huq with cartoons and doodles that accompany the text, Cookie is sure to go down a storm with young readers. Perfect reading for fans of Diary of a Wimpy Kid and with a loveable girl as the lead character.
At the back of the book there are science experiments that feature in the story that readers can try at home and a pancake recipe - enjoy.
I just couldn't get into it. I started it as a work lunchtime read before the dreaded Covid lockdown, which subsequently left it untouched for months in an abandoned office. This most definitely didn't help the situation! Whenever I looked at it to pick up and start again I just never found the motivation as I didn't remember particularly enjoying it in the first place. I ordered it to read from the library as I remember Konnie Huq from Blue Peter and my childhood growing up so felt a bit of nostalgia. That's as far as the nostalgia went for me though I'm afraid and I lost the will to carry on where I left off after I was allowed back into the office once the lockdown restrictions eased a bit. I decided it's not just for me and let it go half finished. One star purely because it didn't hold my attention enough to want to finish and I couldn't really remember what had happened so far and wasn't about to start it all over again when my to read pile is growing by the day. I'll park it for now and maybe our paths will cross again in the future and I'll give it another go and amend my rating.
This is such a fun book for young readers. It has vibes of some of my childhood favourites, with some wonderfully original moments too. I loved the little doodles, they add even more humour to the already entertaining read.
I really enjoyed the way there were some educational moments thrown in. It’s predominantly a funny book, but there are lots of little tidbits like the solar system and long words. Not to mention the fact that Cookie is from a Bengali Muslim family, so there are also cultural references too. It’s the kind of book I’d happily encourage my child to read, as it has so much to offer.
The whole premise of wanting to get on a tv quiz show was just wonderful, it reminded me so much of my childhood and desperately wanting to be a part of ‘Fun House’ (still waiting for someone to make that dream come true 🥲).
A wonderful book, definitely recommend for younger readers. (Cookie is 9 and in Year 5 for an idea of the age the book is aimed at)
girl, this book was amazing, not the boy, he was really annoying and I cannot believe that Cookie held the jord poo responsible for all of her good luck, but thats just took stupid. Well, After many struggles Cookie finally got into Brain busters, but she did not get any questions right but they still won because of the most annoying boy in the world. That is so annoying!!! At least the annoying boy (BTDubs [by the way] his name is Jake) told cOokie that he did steal Cookies science project.
Cookie likes a cat named Bluey in the pet shop. But then the most annoying boy in the world barges past her and takes Bluey away by buying the car from the pet shop. Read the funny exciting book on how she shares Bluey with the most annoying boy.
A very funny story 🤣 I really like the obsession which swans🦢and the fact that they told us about the dream and I love ❤️ 😍 so many other parts as well but if I were to wright all of them down this would be very long. All I've really go to say is that it's amazing
It was a great book and it was about a Bengali girl that talks about her life! It’s very good for people under 5 and over but their are quite a lot of pages and my friend read it and he said it was really good?!
This is one of my favourite books. It’s very interesting. I like this book very much. I like her and I like Jake too. I hope that the author will write more “Cookie” books.
Subtitled 'The Most Annoying Boy in the World', it actually features the most annoying girl in the world for two-thirds, before the plot she's involved in manages to stop her from being a whingeing, thumpable grinch. After that it was fine, but this certainly isn't the best 'Wimpy Kid' semi-pictorial book out there. Two and a half stars as per the goodreads ratings, which are slightly different to those where my full review is posted, so please feel free to click on:- http://www.thebookbag.co.uk/reviews/i...
A funny new illustrated series for children. Cookie is a little annoying at first, but she settles down after a while. The science bits are fun without going overboard, and the illustrations are very cute. Love the experiments at the end! This one is going to do well.
I received a free copy and chose to write an honest review.
Not for me this one, written in first person but I felt the voice was inauthentic, I just didn’t feel I was reading a year 5 child’s thoughts. Shame because it is funny in places and the stick man illustrations are cool.
A fine little addition t any school library. I'm looking forward to putting it up as my book of the week when I get back on Monday. I'm sure it will fly off the shelf. I just know it'll be popular with all those who love Wimpy Kid ad Tom Gates.
Love to read the cookie books with my 9 year old. They are really funny without being silly poo jokes (very little at least) and have a few life lessons and a diverse cast. Although the main character is s girl, they are great for boys too!
