Former laid-back surfer and celebrated Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department homicide detective Roy Church finds himself immersed in a complex murder investigation spanning several decades. Intent on finishing his career as a road deputy in rural Northern California, Roy is nonetheless recruited by his desperate sheriff when bones, thought to belong to a missing local woman, are discovered by hikers. From California's crown jewel, Mount Shasta, to the fabled California Wine Country, to the cottonmouth-rich waters of East Texas, a reluctant Roy follows a trail using his cop's instincts honed over two decades as one of LA County's finest sleuths. Assisted by an eager, young intern, he soon discovers that he's stepped into the rattlers' den of a white-boy prison gang that's determined to keep its secrets safe even it it means killing a relentless cop to do so.
Well written exciting thriller. Couldn’t put the book down wanted to know the next step of both the detective and the criminal. The insight to the drug gang world and the prison world was so detailed. The Northern California setting was perfect. Looking forward to the next book.
Took me years to finally read it. George was always a great story teller, and still is. This book brought me back to working with him and the stories he would tell. Liked all the similarities to our old co-workers. Looking forward to reading the other books George wrote. Thanks George, - Det Eric G
It's pretty easy to see who this book might appeal to. It definitely isn't me. I wanted to support a local after reading a local news article but this book could use a real, professional editor as well as some serious cultural awareness (check out some of the comments I've highlighted and shared so far - OH MY GOD - anyone with an education would see this as the typical backwoods racist awfulness it is - I kept hoping it might be satire but I doubt very seriously that it is, as I unfortunately have OTHER neighbors who talk just like this - and this guy was a "classroom helper" at a local school no less). Mystery solved around the 30% mark, no need to finish this mess. Sorry, neighbor.
A book that is hard to put down. Full of action, drama, humor, and suspense. Highly recommend to someone who would like an inside look into real police work.
