This is an amazingly well-written and engaging book about the basics of astrology and evolutionary astrology, written by someone who can write better than most. I was pleasantly surprised as it reads as well as a good novel you can't put down.
Forrest makes prodigious use of anaologies and presents a clear, poetic, and intelligent case for astrology as its own science with its own significance to help us understand ourselves and the processes we go through as human beings.
I found it to be a good introductory, yet in-depth read on the basics. He covers the chart as a whole, the different house systems, the meaning of the houses, the horizons of the chart, along with the hemisphere and directions of the chart and what they signify.
As well, he makes a fun and intense read for each sign, which I thought to be the most articulate and insightful I have read so far.
He provides guidance on where to start, assuring the reader that one can absoltuely learn to read a chart in a skillful way and assures us it is normal (even for a practiced astrologer) to feel overwhelmed just looking at a chart at first. One of his anologies that I appreciated, was likening a first approach to a chart as a "facuet" where the flow of water must be at first controlled in order to decipher with skill, the most note-worthy aspects. Then slowly, the flow can be increased.
He provides a chart of a famous Englishman to refer to througout the book as an example. By the end of the book, we have an understanding of this person from an astrological perspective.
In all, Forrest covers the bones of astrology in a basic way, gaining in more complex aspects of astrology and explanation. I think anyone who has already studied astrology might still get something out of it. I imagine, at least! I am happy that this was the first astrology book I have read from cover to cover. I had to stay on my toes for this introductory work, which turned out to be spell-binding, even in its technical aspects.
This is a great start for anyone interested in learning more about astrology. It’s a very textbook kind of book where there are definitions, sections, etc. so it takes awhile to get into it. Incredible explanations of each sign, planet, and house and how they work with each other. The only thing is the ending; it’s very confusing for anyone who’s a beginner. He mentions at the beginning of the section that he wants to introduce all the concepts and not to get too involved but he honestly should’ve left that part out. It confused me so much that I forgot about the rest of the book because I was so focused on trying to understand the more complex concepts at the end. Otherwise it’s an incredible book with AMAZING descriptions and he really makes you understand it all.
This book is seriously amazing and gave me such an in depth and better understand of astrology and how to read and navigate a birth chart. Seriously I really do recommend this book if you have basic understanding of the, planets, signs, and houses and want to really now how to read a birth chart.
pretty good! would recommend to people looking for a decently comprehensive place to start - good coverage on signs, houses, aspects, etc. i think he does a great job starting from scratch.
his tone is warm & not pretentious, which i always appreciate.
my caveats are just that, being of the era he is, his astrology doesn’t account for some of the more recent rediscoveries (such as Whole Sign Houses), and he focuses so much of the book correlating each house to a specific sign.
i have the same complaint with books from Liz Greene & other psychological astrologers from the 20th century, and realize it’s a point of disagreement - but would advise anyone reading this book just to remember that the sign/house associations are modern, and can make things unnecessarily confusing when starting out.
Great intro to astrology. Love the way he writes, very easy to imagine and truly understand the different concepts in astrology that can often be easily confused. Easy, enjoyable read. I’d recommend it to anyone remotely interested in the basics of astrology. It is more than a reference book, so this is more for those that want to truly understand astrology than a “look up who I’m compatible with” type book.
For anyone beginning their journey with astrology, this book breaks it down into bite-sized (manageable) pieces. However, I highly encourage anyone wanting to learn how to read birth charts to also discover other books and other teachers for the best education and exposure for this beautiful study of the stars.
Also, for non-novices this can be a great refresher on each element of the natal chart. But if you’re looking for deeper studies, this would not be the book to pick up.
This is a must have book if you’re into astrology. This book is as good book for beginners as well as more adepts of astrology. I just love how Steven Forrest looks at astrology and how he is able to put it all into words and makes astrology very comprehensive. This book is about the fundamentals of astrology and what astrology can mean for you. Astrology is an ancient knowledge and tool that can be used to understand oneself and one’s life better. It opens up your view of the world, and makes you more consciously aware of life itself. I totally recommend the investment in this book! Many of his books by the way!
So much information and a unique way to read a birth chart. This is a great teaching book about the basics of astrology and how to read a birth chart. He gives a good overview of the sky and the various parts to pay attention to. and then gives steps so that you won't get lost in the process.
I want to read it again with my birthchart in hand so I can get a better perspective. and then look at my whole families birth charts and all my friends and everyone i know.
Pretty good insight to reading astrology. Great information on interpreting planets and houses to understand how you handle situations and what may trigger you. Give you an understanding that astrology is not a fortune teller saying what path you should be on, but there are many paths. Select some over others can fulfill you or help your inner soul spark leave.
Loved the author’s style of writing. It is a great refresher for those getting back into astrology and a good book to start off when learning astrology. Did not get bored of reading it! Despite already having some knowledge, I still learned so much more about reading birth charts and planet + sign meanings. Keeping as a reference.
Profound! Highly recommended to anyone who is interested in astrology. Do read through this book. Beautifully written with lots of information and insights!
A must-read foundation book for astrology newbies, and I discovered it many years later to find out this is the one that is able to answer all the doubts I used to have by reading other astrological books earlier. Remember to give this book a good read before you sail away with even more astrology reference books available.
This is metaphysical knowledge, and I do not view it from the perspective of science. Chinese has metaphysic knowledge that I can relate of and we call it BaZi, which is still used today. It is similar to astrology, which is also included in the date and time of birth plus 4 seasons. I personally find that this kind of wisdom is so amazing and interesting at the same time paying high respect and amazement to ancient human beings (who mostly are scholars, mathematicians, philosphers, 天文学家 astronomers) who spent their whole life studied and developed these system from both eastern and western realm.
