New World #1

Demon Lord

Rate this book
Alex Miller woke up, almost 4000 years into the future, in a fantasy world with monsters, dungeons, adventurers and pretty girls from all kinds of races. His Doctor certainly did a great job, providing him with an almost immortal body, made from Demon blood and other questionable materials.
What will he do with this new life? Become stronger? Famous? Or just build a harem?

So much awful

I made it 8% into the book before I had to stop. I am fairly sure I got eye and brain cancer from what I did read.

The MC is supposed to be from the UK, but this reads like it was written in very poor English, translated to Russian and translated back to English by a bot.

I put more effort into editing this post than the author did into editing his entire book.

Rating 3.0 stars

This was okay. The story was not that complicated. I have read a bunch of similar stories that are much better. But let's be honest, how many people go into reading these type of stories and expect something new and original? I usually look for something that really grabs my attention. That could be the magic system, the characters or the relationships. I have read other reviews that rated this book at one star and I can't argue that point of view. I rated this 3 stars because while nothing stood out as being great, nothing triggered my pet-peeves either. There were A LOT of spelling errors, typos, and problems with grammar. That doesn't bother me as much as some other people though.

The story follow Alex Miller, who just woke up after being dead for 400o years. He got into a car accident on the way the world changed. The hadron collider SERN caused an explosion that changed the face of the planet and allowed magic and other magical creatures to come to the planet. When Alex was in the hospital the doctor captured his soul and it took him 4000 years to resurrect him. It took so long because he had to find the perfect body and he needed to use a demon to make the body. The Doctor turned into a Lich which allowed him to live for that long. He gave Alex a better body, access to magic, magic clothes, magic weapons and told him to go off into the world.

He goes off to be an adventurer. What he doesn't know is that people are afraid of mages that use dark magic which Alex does. He goes off hunting trying to make money. Along the way he buys a catgirl slave. Right from the beginning everyone notices something different about Alex. He is way more powerful that he should be and he ends up being called a demon, which then turns into demon lord. His body was made from a demon even though he looks normal, but this body gives him urges that don't really fit with his morals. He finds pleasure in killing and is constantly thinking about sex. He decides to just go with it and try to only kill evil people that deserve it.

The setup was a little to simple. Why would the Lich spend 4000 years working on Alex and then just tell him to leave once he is awake? He spent a lot of time and money on Alex. The magic/stats system was very simple as well. All stats were rated S,A,B,C,D,E,F with S being the highest and F being the lowest. His magic was also rated the same way. From day one he just started kicking ass. There were no training periods where he got stronger and learned magic. He created zombies that followed his commands and put them in his dimensional storage. At one point he had 20,000 high level zombies in his storage. The relationship's were nothing new and nothing special. I think this author just wanted to put something out as fast as possible. This is probably a 2 - 2.5 star story but since I am planning on reading the next one, I feel obligated to give it 3 stars.

Why?

It reads like a 14 year olds dream of what the world should be like and has all the horrible spelling and grammar you might expect from that same kid.

Bland, cringe , and cliche

this comes across as cringy and tasteless as it gets. Apart from the hyper inflated male fantasy theme found within the book , this story really lacks any substance as the main character gets stronger and better with no real challenge or motivation for the reader to be interested. If you love Japanese light novels then you might enjoy the seemly characteristic monologues and themes within the book

Very poorly written imitation of a Japanese Light Novel. The protagonist has no soul, he calmly accepts a situation that should have taken at least a chapter for him to moderately adjust. The World has changed into something unrecognizable, family, friends and everything that was normal is gone yet, he take it all in stride as if it's nothing traumatic at all. Really attempted to finish it and finally gave up 20% into story. Avoid this book and read a Japanese Light Novel instead.

I wasted my time so you don't have to

Extremely simplistic story development
Huge amounts of typos at least 1/page
Very linear story telling with no point of view characters for development
OP main character with lazy backstory
Little to no world development other then "the world ended and now it's a fantasy land"

Desperately needs editor

Like the title said, spelling and grammar errors one would expect of a 4th grader, not a professional author. Couldn't finish the first chapter, it was so bad.

1 Only Because I Cant Put Zero, Stars

Demon Lord is the first book in the New World Series by K. R. Zax.

The writing:
Juvenile and terrible. Is this a translation? It has the same characteristics most writing by non-native English speakers portray when translating.

The plot:
Iffy, at best? Was there a plot? <— real question

The characters:
Very little development or emotional growth involved here. The MC was just happy go lucky, super powered, yay I can have a harem now.

I picked this up because it had so many reviews, yet I'd never heard of it before.

Let me start by saying this is a short book (182 pages) and the writing is very forward and direct with a large number of missed, misspelled, or wrongly spelled words. I believe the author is Eastern European and this is a translation.

The story is pure dungeons and dragons, though. No embellishments, just D&D all the way through. The beginning doesn't really matter because after that Alex is off on adventures using the dark magic he was imbued with.

I enjoyed this book (and the next two). If you've read enough LitRPG, you come across new authors (and old) who put out books with editing issues. As long as I'm able to read between the lines of what that author is trying to say, I'll keep reading.

Book 1 takes on a suspiciously short journey from CERN in Switzerland to Stalingrad (it's well in the future, so the name has been changed to Tsaringrad). He fights monsters by the dozens, does good deeds that get noticed by royalty, and starts accruing land and wealth.

Recommended, but only if you can get past poor editing. 5/5*

spelling mistakes galore

Important words are misspelled and it sucks so much. Be careful reading as it gets infuriating really quickly and doesn’t get much better

This book felt like the author took one of their first drafts and hit publish because they couldn’t be bothered to work on it more. It’s a classic isekai done in a semi-western style. All the tropes are there, unchanged, and lacking depth. Next to no world building was done aside from the classic “magical medieval world with generic fantasy races and knowledge” with a little twist of it still being Earth, somehow. The game system that defines characters strengths was even barely fleshed out. It’s so bare bones, I’d call this story more of a draft with some ideas then anything else.

There were a large amount of grammatical and spelling errors throughout the book, the extra spacing between paragraphs was unwarranted, and the whole thing felt lackluster.

Now all that sounds quite harsh, and that’s for good reason. I didn’t DNF this book because I see quite a bit of potential in it. I could see this story, with quite a bit of editing, turn into something I’d put up there with Slime or Overlord. It just needs more depth and planning done for it to feel substantial enough.

Despite my poor review, I plan to follow this series. Mainly to see if it improves with time, and how the author plans to take the plot along.

Good but not for everyone

I have described books in the past as westernized light novels but I would describe this book more as a Japanese web novel that was extremely well translated. It uses a lot of common tropes and cliches from web/light novels and at times uses exact powers/events from a couple. However, the author is extremely self aware so the cliches/tropes add a type of 4rth wall comedy. I’m also super glad the author decided to not include graphic sex scenes as they normally ruin a story like this.

All in all I’m excited to continue the series I just hope the author understands the common pitfalls of overpowered harem manga: eventually the main character has too much power to keep track of, the repetitive gags get dry, and adding more girls to the harem means the others start losing their “screen time”. A lot of authors decided to throw in super edge twists o lay to see their fan base drop off. There are only two solutions: end the series before it gets to that point or start developing a good overarching plot early.

Not very deep but definitely fun!

The author wrote a very compelling and interesting world, full of tropes to be sure, but I think that’s the fun part. If you want a deep philosophical book about right and wrong don’t pick up this one, but if you want a haram adventure that doesn’t get too detailed this is right up your alley.

The magic system was fun and kinda anime ish. The random character introspection was fun kind of a look at hey I’m turning kind of evil here maybe I should do something nice to make up for it.

A lich doctor

I got to say, a strong start off with a lich who's a doctor! It's nice to see that he realizes that he's not normal or how he used to be and that it's explained why his nature has changed instead him automatically being desensitized towards things just because it's part of the plot. It's a very fun read and I like how the political leaders up top aren't idiots or jerks.

Demon Lord worth it

The Demon Lord was a great read. It was interesting and entertaining. The characters are engaging and interesting, especially Lina. She brings many sexy and funny moments throughout the book. The only drawbacks I have are that I wish it was longer and that there were several obvious spelling and grammatical errors. I am looking forward to the next installment. Thanks!

Very fun

A very fun and interesting story. I love the character and his abilities. My biggest complaint is that the book is too short and moves too fast. The author could have easily added a lot more details, character interaction, and story. If you are looking for a quick, fast, and fun read then this is the right book for you. If you want something more filling then you should probably look elsewhere. Awesome read.

Good story, similar to Mr Dojos work

This story is similar to mr dojos necromancer books. Between the two the stories are about equal. Zax world building is better but mr dojos mc is more developed, corrupted villain. This strory is strong but a ncromancer with a catgirl pet is somewhat unbelievable. Dont even comment about the typos on every page and wrong words. Thats par for the course in the genre. Check out stuart grosse to see what a villain writer can be.

Short and sweet

While this was a short novel it's not the shortest I've read. The plot has some filling out too do but nothing I can't overlook.
The story was very entertaining if a bit rushed. This could have been a full length novel if the author took the time to fill in all the placed he rushed through. The journey and action was nicely done and I will definitely be reading book 2 in this installment.

Fun

Standard isekai style with OP MC who is more into fun. Yeah, he is darkly evil, but more on the neutral side. It is amusing, sexy enough without the usual badly done sex scenes. I gave it 4 stars because the author badly needs an editor th fix the obvious English as a Second Language (maybe third) editing for grammar.

I actually wish I knew where I could hang my own shingle for it, but I don't know what the costs are in the indie biz.

TOO MANY TYPOS!

I didn't even get through the 1st chapter before I quit. Holy cow there were SO MANY typos that I couldn't establish a flow of reading. Having to repeatedly stop and try to figure out what it should say was like driving a car that constantly stalled and had to be restarted. My time is too valuable. Maybe the author should have spent less time gaming and more time in school LOL.

Great for a casual read.

Don't take it too seriously and you should enjoy it. Make sure you're not expecting some deep, probing, or dramatically riveting read.

Is that a bad thing? Not in my opinion. Sometimes I want something lighter.

Could it be better? Of course! That's why I'm currently reading the next series as well! ;-)

Note: For those who care one way or the other. Almost nothing explict. What IS there is mostly implied.

Okay, I guess

Resurrected into a superior body a guy becomes an adventurer and does next to nothing until he has to face a bad guy and win. Broken English is everywhere. It read like a good bad translation; it was almost right, but made it more wrong. Pretty much a beach read; quick, easy, a bit of fun, and then left behind. Enjoy.

Trope-y in all the best ways

What's not to say it's good for an ideal with a self aware protagonist who's got a bit of evil in him from literal demon blood in his veins Lina is a kinky catgirl the only thing I would suggest for the author is to maybe set up characters like Lina as someday strong enough to be a harass in their own right not just Alex's sexy cargirl

Hidden gem

This was a book that I picked from KU trying to find something new. Very glad that I did. The mechanics were simple, the characters all a little off, and yet it was one of the more entertaining stories I’ve picked up in a while. Hopefully, there will be more in this series, and soon.

Excellent story

The story started out a little slow and stilted, but soon picked up speed. And then kept my interest right up to the end. I did not want the story to finish when it did. It was one of those action packed stories where I kept glancing at the percentage completed bar at the bottom of the book to see how far from the end I was, because I just wanted it to continue.

The story itself is decent, a bit shallow though. The Litrpg aspects are very minimal too.

A huge problem, however, is the editing, and proofreading, or the lack thereof. This is basically a rough draft rather than a finished book. Some of the conversations also feel, a bit wooden and unnatural.

Good read

Definitely a good read i like the angle they are going with and can't wait to see how the story develops, my only complaint is that the MC seems a bit reserved and seems to lack any ambition or overall plan but I'm hoping some character development in the next book will fix that.

Besides the typos it's not bad

The book seems like a compilation of multiple other world anime and manga. There is an air of originality but it is out shadowed by all other references. Though they sent that bad there are a ton of simple typo/grammar issues. The kind you would get it you let auto correct fix spelling mistakes but never went to re-read what was fixed.

Surprisingly good

I found this novel to actually be very surprisingly good I started reading it with no real anticipation of the quality of the story because it seem to follow in the same format as many others that have been written in this genre, but it surprised me and I very much enjoyed it. I am now on to read the next book in the series.

Simple but enjoyable

Even with the gifts he has been given it's a little too fast on power development. Also even if his morals are compromised by demon blood he should still spend more time worrying about his mind being tampered with. That said I love the story it's a simple easy to read novel, though definitely not a deep thinker. Good to enjoy for some light reading.
