Ugh! Do not read this book. Under any circumstance. I started it and was drawn in by the FIVE story-lines going on at once. "Okay," I thought to myself, "I can't wait to see how he ties all this together!" Well, guess what? He didn't. One of the storylines was never even tied into the main plot, it just was there like some random sub-plot (that had absolutely nothing to do with anything else). The editor of this book should be slapped across the face. As should John Lutz. I would like the hours I spent reading this back.
There are a number of authors, including John Lutz, who spit out a shocking number of novels per year. While they are entertaining murder mysteries that I often fly through, there is nothing unique or memorable about them. If you are looking for a mindless murder mystery I would definitely recommend, as I went through it quite fast and was entertained for the most part. However be warned there is nothing literary or unique about it. Almost halfway through the book new characters were still being introduced. It mostly all came together in the end, however character development for all characters including the main character was very weak. Also there wasn't much investigative detail that is normally in murder mysteries, which also left some questions. Most of the action happened in the last 60 or so pages, where I would have preferred more detail around those events, and less detail in the first 400 pages.
I only gave this 4 Stars rather than 5, however good, but not as good as other books I have read by John Lutz... In my genre of books still at the top of my list!!!
Story is scripty.... its a readable book but its just OK so far.... I am kind of confused on which seriel killer they are after... seems like two... but it seems they are only investigating one so far.... I tend to forget the characters till I read a bit and it all comes back to me.... may have to change star rating to one... Just an OK book
I'd give it 2.5 stars if it were offered. Just okay. Three story lines - really? There's one story line that added nothing (the Hobbs story line). The book closes with that story line and I thought "why was this even included". The other two story lines sort of worked together. Honestly, the book could have been better just following the slicer line.
I have really enjoyed the Frank Quinn Series from John Lutz, but this one had too many story lines that made it confusing. Most of it tied up nicely in a frantic finish , however the Hobbs storyline just didn't make sense, and didn't really have a place in the book. Looking forward to the next one though!
I really wish I had read the first in the series first, it would have answered some of the questions I felt got unanswered in other books. The author has good ideas, I just think he needs a better editor.
I got this book as a free Kindle download and feel like that was still too much to pay. Pure garbage and I'm a little embarrassed I actually read the whole book.
Right now I'm just trying to get thru the book. Way to many characters and subplots to keep track of...but much like any book I start, I'll finish this one. Not one I'll recommend.
This book started kinda slow for me. I like a pick up and go. It wasn't a bad book just not a go go go! there were a couple spots but for the most part not a bad read.
It started well, but it quickly lost momentum. The characters feel wooden and stereotypical, lacking any real depth. Despite the substantial amount of sex and gore, the pacing is off.
What really stopped me in my tracks, though, was the lack of proper editing. When the character named Mishkin is renamed Mishner for one whole page, that's when I stopped reading.
All that being said, however, I think with a good developmental edit (and several proofreadings), this could be a great book. It's definitely an interesting plot, it just feels disconnected from the people living it.
I rate this one about 3 1/2 stars. The plot was interesting; however, there is a separate crime that has nothing to do with the main story and only served as a distraction to the other action. There are also things mentioned that, I'm guessing, refer back to things that happened in the previous books. Without having read those, there are not enough details mentioned about those things so it added confusion to the character's stories. Overall, if you're going to read the Frank Quinn series, you probably want to read them in order.
Great book and narration by Scott Brick (audible review)
Oh my, this killer is really psycho.... Again!
Another sick psycho killer. Dang where does John Lutz think of these things???
I do love these book. I am really enjoying the character developments with these characters Quinn, Feds and Pearl. And that ME Nift is such disgusting little jerk, and boy does Pearl hate him. LOL love it!
The narration is great, I love Scott Brick so much! He is the best!
I thoroughly enjoyed this John Lutz book and so far my favourite Frank Quinn story. I really enjoyed the plot that revolved around the idea of two potentially different killers on the loose. The interweaving characters developing throughout was also truly engrossing and made this far more enjoyable than merely a whodunit style of murder detective book. I'm starting to get to know more about the main characters and their complexities, which is a great developing feature of this series of books.
First, there was a storyline that was totally unconnected to the rest of the book. I don’t get it. Second, there was so much going on that it took a lot of effort to keep track of all the storylines. I don’t have much else to say other than I didn’t HATE it, but it doesn’t make me excited to read anything else written by this author.
My first read book from this MASTER. I had to buy another his books immediately! Team of investigators with casual Frank Quinn and hard headed Pearl would be enough for separate book. The killer in this case has so original modus operandi that I was looking forward to his next murder. :D Imaginative and tasteful book - more books like this one, please!
I enjoyed this one, but not as much as others. For a good portion of the book I was more invested in Pearl's mole than the main storyline. I wonder if the Hobbs storyline will be in another book because it was weird that it was mentioned so much but nothing really came of it until the end.

Nice plot - intricately woven with myriads of characters. Captain Quinn is strong and masculine, but a few more inner thoughts might have been helpful getting a better read on him. Nice read.
He has a good, descriptive writing style, but I personally don't like how he portrays his character. It felt less like a thriller and more like romance on some parts, but I didn't despise it.
