This is the text that sets a new standard in its field with striking visuals, fascinating reconstructions, accessible prose, and coverage of the wider Greek world. The Second Edition extends student understanding of Greek art in history through richer archaeological context and expanded coverage of both the earliest Bronze Age and latest Hellenistic periods.
Look, I read this entire textbook cover to cover so I will be counting it towards my Goodreads goal thank you very much.
This was an enlightening read — I really enjoyed Neer’s commentary and learned a ton about Greek art & architecture, through an archaeologist, art historian, and classist’s lens. Neer’s opinions about the pieces definitely shines through (especially in his interpretations of them, which could go a bit far). Overall one of the better textbooks I’ve read.
PROPERTIES OF THE BOOK: - Greek Art - Greek Archeology - History - Pictures - Myths and Lore
WHY I DECIDED TO READ THIS BOOK: - For my college class - Interesting material - Good overview of things everyone should know
WHAT I LIKED: - Informative
WHAT I DIDN’T LIKE: - Jumped from place to place like someone reading it is supposed to know the timeframe/what’s going on - Would skip over important parts in history or not go over them in full
