Working Back

Rate this book
Girls weren’t on Bryant Cook’s radar until the day he moved next door to the most beautiful girl he’d ever seen. Fortunately for him, Faith Baker fell just as hard that first day as well.
From ages eight to twenty-two, it was the ‘Faith and Bryant’ show, and their happily forever after seemed certain. Until it wasn’t.
Now she’s back after twelve years and she wants what they had.
That’s when Bryant issues a challenge. One Faith can’t resist. After all, her future—their future—is riding on it.
She said she’d do anything. She just didn’t think he meant *that*..

This is a super cute second chance romance. Bryant and Faith, a childhood freind turns into lover then break up then
... back again together. No angst/ drama/ secret baby etc. Jusy simple love story. With all of that trimings.

It can be consider as plain vanilla romance. What I want more is to see Faith's life while she were in Australia. It is after all, plays important role on her breakup with Bryant. I need it so I can understand why she left Bryant.

Overall it is a wonderful story.

I was dying to know what went down between Bryant and Faith and Ms. Harvey brought us their story in a quite unique and unconventional way.

Boy meets girl next door at eight and they become best friends. A few years later they fall in love. A few years after that the man proposes to the love of his life. What does she do? Says no and runs away all the way to Australia. Twelve years later she's back and ready to win him back. What does he do? Proposes again within ten minutes of seeing her again.

Okay, so that's a summary that doesn't do the story justice. It was so emotional and heartfelt, my lips were trembling every other page, I so wanted them to work things out.
I loved that it was Faith who kinda, sorta had to grovel and prove herself to win Bryant back. I thought Bry's proposal was genius and couldn't wait to see where would this take them. That's why I think it was such a unique story, I don't think I've ever read something like this.
My only hung up was those twelve years and how they didn't just have hook-ups - we are all human after all - but actual relationships. That didn't fit into their forever love but that's just me.

Jax and Ronnie are still my favorite couple but Cohen's story looks very promising, I can't wait!

Whelp! That was not how I was expecting Bryant's story to begin!

I knew from the little bits at the end of the previous book that this was going to be Bryant's second chance, however it did not go as I expected - at all!

Now, I don't want to give anything away, however I will say that you are going to love Bryant and Faith's story.

The brothers are back house flipping, and our lovelies are flipping switches on their attraction. This is a pretty slow burn of a story. Sure, the love each other, however it takes a while for them both to get on the same page

I laughed at the antics of the brothers. This family are the bomb! Not just the siblings either - oh my goodness, the Cook parents had me laughing, squeaming at times and just more and more seeing where the kids get it all from.

This installment was just .... lovely. No angst, no stupid fights and miscommunications. Just love and lust and sweetness.

I look forward to the next Cook finding their one.

Friends since childhood, first love, first everything including first heartbreak when twelve years ago Faith Baker left Bryant Cook and took an internship in Australia when at 22 he proposed marriage.

Now back in Chicago, Faith plans to get Bryant back but he throws a big wrench her plan which leads to an extremely entertaining and fun second chance romance. This slow burn romance was filled with laughter, tears, family, memories, and a whole lot of love.

There’s something to be said for people who know each other so well and know what they want and while these two had been apart for 12 years, underneath the hurt and heartbreak was a foundation most couples don’t have. I’ll admit I was worried that Bryant’s proposition was nefarious at first, that he was out for revenge for Faith leaving him all those years ago, but in reality he was protecting his heart and wanted to have her close.

I love watching these two get to know one another as the adults they’ve become all while having that familiarity of knowing each other so deeply. So many times in books with a back story like this, the couple will rehash the past over and over and only focus on the bad part, but in this book they focused on the good and the here and now and it was so damn refreshing.

I loved their intimacy even before they began a physical relationship again; it showed over and over how comfortable they were together as the built a foundation for their new relationship.

As I have not read the other books in this series, I don’t know the background on the other brothers but it is something I plan to rectify immediately. I fell completely in love with all the characters in this book and can’t wait to find out more about each of them.

My one teeny tiny complaint and while it didn’t lessen by enjoyment of the book, it did take me out of the story every time it happened, this is a family who lives in Chicago, born and raised, yet they often use words and expressions that are not American/U.S. used words and expressions. After a bit of research since this is a new to me author, I find she hails from New Zealand which explains why it happened, but doesn’t explain why it wasn’t corrected in editing.

I loved every bit of this story and I thoroughly appreciated the grand gesture ending, Working Back was my first book by BJ Harvey but it won’t be my last!

ARC kindly received in exchange for an honest review.

Another great instalment in this series from BJ Harvey. We finally get to learn about Bryant, and his mysterious path with Faith, who we have only heard a little bit about previously.

Let me tell you, this book starts off with a bang, in a totally unexpected way. I had to think to myself about the previous books and try and remember where I was, it was just so unexpected. Meeting Faith and watching she and Bryant learn each other, and fall back into old ways, after so long apart was an interesting concept.

Whilst the brothers are flipping yet another house, these two have their own things to learn about and deal with, along with having the whole tribe of both of their families along for the ride, because of how close they all are. We get to see a bit more of Ezra in this one, given that he's Faith's brother, and there are some more characters we're also introduced to a little more as well. But of course, of faves from the previous books are here too, and I loved all their moments together. Especially some of the ones with little Ax. Ronnie is always a fave for me too.

Lots of interesting times in this one, but no real angst which was really nice. Just a nice and fun easy read. I look forward to more in this series, especially as we're given a bit of a teaser in this book about who the next one may just be about.

God I love it when this women writes, she manages to make me smile, laugh out loud and with the beauty that she writes into her love stories, she can make me shed a tear or two. The main stories are brilliant but the small touches of background stories make for a fantastic book.

I always wondered what had crawled up Bryant's arse when he appeared in the previous books. I'm not saying he was horrible or miserable at all. But there was something there and this book explains it completely, when Faith appears again 12 years after she broke his heart, you get the answer, Faith was always his problem.

Bryant and Faith's story is one I'd say was written long before they were born. From the second they met they were each others end. And for me the swans excerpts in this book sum this couple up completely. Them working back to what they once was is touching, funny and makes your heart happy.

All the characters are brilliant and make appearances that help build this story to even more. But again Axel stole a huge chunk of the show. And as always made me cry laughing. As they say from the mouths of babes. And from Axel's the truths he mutters are priceless.

This book is a total recommend from me. I really can't wait for the next book. I need more from the Cook family.

I can’t get enough of this series and the Cook family! Working Back is a beautiful second chance love story. It has the laugh out loud antics that the previous books in the series have plus all the feels. Bryant and Faith were childhood sweethearts and always belonged together. Faith has just returned home and is determined for Bryant to give her a second chance. What she doesn’t expect is a shocking proposal that she cannot turn down. I love these two so much! The chemistry between them was evident immediately and there is no doubt they are each other’s soulmate. The two had their obstacles to overcome but with both the Cook and Baker family routing for them you can’t help but route for them too. This was a fun read with sexy banter, with a ton of heart and humor. It checks all the boxes. I am looking forward to Cohen and Skye’s story next in Hard Work.

This is the third book in the Cook Brother's series and I can't help but fall more in love with each book that BJ Harvey releases. Second chance romance is one of my favorite tropes and this book couldn't have been more perfect! Bryant and Faith were sexy, fun, witty and emotional all wrapped up in a story about losing yourself and knowing you need to find that person you're supposed to be. Bryant and Faith quickly became a favorite, I can't wait to see what's in store for the next Cook brother.

What a great read! Seriously! BJ is freakin' brilliant with her words and her stories are addictive. I loved the characters and how there was an amazing slow burn between them. Their past is complicated and when they reunite it’s sparks like you wouldn’t believe. Loved it! Can’t wait to see what the next Cook brother does. I love these guys.

5 star Review Working Back (Cook County #3) by B.J. Harvey
What happens when the girl you fell in love with suddenly returns? That is the position Bryant Cook finds himself in when Faith Baker suddenly re appears in his life.
I loved Bryant from the time he was introduced in the first book, and all this book has done has made me fall even more in love with him. This series is a great example of RomCom writing at it’s finest; there is nothing that I did love about this book. From the first to the last page I was totally invested and all in with Bryant and Faith. I so wanted them to work through all their issues and to get the happily ever after that they both deserved.
Faith hurt Bryant badly when she abruptly left 12 years ago, leaving behind Bryant and all their dreams. Bryant has buried himself in his family business and become a partner in the renovation business led by his brother Jamie, never getting over Faith.
It is obvious to everyone around them that Bryant and Faith are meant to be together but can they overcome the hurts of the past, forgive and move forward? Or will circumstances tear them apart again?
As with the other books in this series, Working Back is a laugh out loud romantic comedy with lots of heart and family who love and support one another and those they love. However, it is not all sweetness and light, it also shows you how important communication and trust is.
This a feel good story that will leave you with a smile on your face and anxious for more from the Cook family.

Ah, I have been dying to know more about Bryant Cook and his long time love Faith Baker, who had left him for twelve years! So, once I had my hands on it I completely devoured it.

This author has such an incredible way of styling words into a creative literary piece of art. She weaves them to produce entertaining and interesting stories that almost put you under a spell with the power of helping you to escape into the world of fiction.

Bryant is quite the cool cucumber... on the outside mainly but honestly he is pretty cool. His love for Faith hasn’t dwindled at all after twelve years apart, mind you either has her love for him. Working things out is the tricky part though. I really enjoyed all of the characters especially the guest appearances that happen. Axel is his adorable eight year old self, he always steals the scene! Marcy Cook is a delight too, I want her to be my mum! 😉

As with all of the books in this amazing series, the sense of humour is outstanding. The fun banter between characters and throw away lines literally have you laughing out loud. For example this little gem between Jax and Ronnie... “Barbie…” Jax warns from the kitchen. “Shut up, Ken. I’m talking to GI Joe,” she says with a wink.

Another fantastic story I totally recommend to everyone.

God, I love a second-chance romance. And BJ Harvey more than delivers with this one.
Childhood friends, high school sweethearts, a love that never quit.

Watching Bryant and Faith find themselves in each other again was so sweet and beautiful. You could feel their love for each other. You really wanted to see these two make it happen.

And BJ Harvey gives us more of those Cook brothers we know and love, all while giving us little hints at books to come.

Super cute, low angst second chance romance. Unlike the second book in this series, I understood why they wanted to slow things down physically. They had to rebuild that trust before diving right in. You could really feel both the excitement and wariness in both of these characters. They were so in love, but also rightfully wary of being hurt again. Well done.

~ 4 Babycakes Stars ~

Working Back is the third book in BJ Harvey’s Cook Brothers Series. I have to be honest and say that this story wasn’t my favorite of the series. I don’t know what it was, I can’t put my finger on it, but something felt missing in this story. The storyline itself seemed flat. Maybe it was the lack of drama that was missing. There really wasn’t anything that grabbed my attention and made me hold on. I am sure I am in the minority with this.

Now that I have explained what didn’t work for me, let me explain what did and why this was still a 4 star read for me. I loved the characters of this book. Bryant and Faith were made for each other. True Sole mates. Although I think if we would’ve gotten more of their backstory, the connection to them would’ve been better for me. I loved that this is a second chance romance but also a friends to lovers.

BJ Harvey is the master of the romantic comedy story. She knows how to give the reader the right amount of laughter, but also give us the emotional feels we want to feel in a romance book.

I love how Ms. Harvey adds in the banter between the Hero and heroine of the story, but also includes all the secondary characters into it. Makes you feel like you are a part of this family/friendship. I will say that the connection between Bryant and Faith felt a little more serious than the other couples we have met in this series. But with all their history, I guess that makes sense.

Each book in this series is a standalone novel. Working Back, like I said , is the third book in this series. It is told in Dual POV. I thought this book was filled with humor and love. This is kind of a slow burn, but it totally worked for them. It was fun watching these two open up to each other and learning each other all over again. I was glad to see all the walls come down as the story went on. I thought the pace and flow of the story worked well.

In this book we follow Faith and Bryant’s journey back to each other. Bryant and Faith have known each other since they were 8 years old. Forming a wonderful friendship and then progressing into something more. But at 22 Faith wanted…no needed…something more. So she left. Now 12 years later she is back and she is determined to win Bryant’s love back. I she willing to do anything for Bryant?? When he gives her a proposition, will she be able to refuse?? Can these two find their way back to each other?? Can Bryant be sure that Faith won’t leave again?? Read this book to find out.

As always I love that we got to see the other Cook brothers in this story. I also liked seeing all the women in their lives. When this group and the others from the Game Series get together you know you’re in for a treat. One that will have you laughing out loud. I also loved seeing Axel in this story again. I wanted more of him….he cracks me up!!!

BJ Harvey is and will always be one of my All Time Favorite authors. I will read anything she writes. Her stories are truly entertaining reads. Her books are ones I know I will read over and over again. If you haven’t had the pleasure of reading her books yet, what are you waiting for?? Pick up the Cook Brothers Series and then sit back and enjoy the journey that her books take you on. You won’t be sorry!!!!

I really love this series, this family, these brothers, this author, I JUST LOVE IT ALL!!

Faith and Bryant have history. Waaaaaaaaaay back history. They’ve shared a lot of first in their lifetime so far, including heartbreak. However, today is a new day, and they’re taking their second chance to get it right! One of my all time favorite tropes! There’s nothing like a good redemption story for me.

For me, the best part of this story was its low angst/conflict and also their story stayed in the present, for the most part. Faith and Bryant both didn’t dwell to far into the past and/or hurts they might have endured over a decade ago when they split. They focused on the here and now and learning who they were today and grow their love today. There was no conflict for conflict. Just a sweet and humorous story of two people reuniting to try and get it right this time. I had a smile on my face throughout the entire story and my heart was happy.

This family continues to entertain me in the best way! They are a delight to read individually and an absolute hoot to read together! I can’t wait for Cohen’s story!!

Bryant Cook & Faith Baker were always soulmates, dating all the way back since she was 8 years old. He always knew that he would marry her, but when he finally popped the question, she turned him down & left. This story picks up with Faith coming home after 12 years being gone, which sends Bryant for a loop, though he never got over her. The kicker is, she never got over him either, but she had to do what she had to do for her. He dares her to marry him when she says she'll do anything to fix things, and that's starts us out on a very frustrating push & pull situation, because they go to the courthouse before clearing the air. I'm not saying I was full of rage, because to be honest, I found myself laughing a ton, but I did get frustrated at how slow it took them to clear said air. They obviously still had all the lethal chemistry, but that too, took time to explode again. Thankfully, there wasn't any other OM or OW drama to take away from the second chance goodness, and it was refreshing. So, did they ever get it together to actually make a real go at things again?! Or had they been apart for too long?! One click to find out, as I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO ALL!

Bryant Cook’s story is the one I have been waiting for and it did not disappoint, it was everything I expected and so much more. Working Back has all the feels so be warned you will laugh you may even shed a tear during this highly entertaining read.
The Cook brother's are back doing what they love flipping houses, they are back in their close knit group of family and friends and for me one of the highlights of this series is this authors talent of making you feel part of this amazing group of people as they find love in the most unexpected places.
This second chance romance is a slow burn that’s about family and friendships, it’s about honesty, it’s beautifully written and it’s the perfect addition to the series. What’s next for these brothers who knows but I’m excited to see where this very talented author takes us next.

Bryant Cook's book is more than I could ever have imagined and I felt so many emotions as I read! Even shedding tears in certain moments! But there was laughter to be had too, quite a bit really!
I loved so much about this story especially the witty banter and the beautiful friendships and the family bond they all have! Incredibly beautiful! Its an entertaining storyline but it also says that you should be open and honest with the person you love! Which is definitely true and important!
I loved how after all the years that Faith has been gone that Bryant can shock everyone as to what happens! This book was amazing and a wonderful addition to the series! Literally chomping at the bit for the next ones in the Cook Brothers series!
Definitely a great Rom com!

Erin ~

This series continues to blow me away. As I’ve been reading, it’s become impossible not to be curious about Bryant’s story. After reading the Work Violation, I knew I HAD to get my hands on this book!
This story, like the others, was a fun, light read that I found myself completely lost in. Harvey doesn’t need to drown us in drama, she gives us so much substance but allows the characters and their journey to take the lead. Bry and Faith may have a long and complex history but we get to witness the whirlwind of their second chance. I was wrapped up in the excitement, comfort, and love between these two. Now that I’ve finally devoured this book, I’m already counting down the days until the next book releases!

FULL REVIEW TO COME!!

“Right now, nobody is thinking about how many years you were gone. We’re all just thankful to have you back.”

BJ Harvey never fails to deliver and this couple are really nudging to be my favourites of this series. The Cook brothers have all got their charm and each and every one of them are just as damn adorable. Bryant has always been the quiet one and I knew he had been burned, but we never actually knew how much.

BJ Harvey tells their story perfectly and Bryant is definitely a 'go big or go home' type of guy. Absolutely loved it!!

Bryant and Faith were best friends as children and as they grew up their friendship developed into love. He thought that their love was the forever kind and was blindsided when Faith left him and their hometown behind.

Twelve years later Faith is back in town and wants a second chance but for that to happen he has one condition she wasn’t expecting. There was never a question that they loved each other but is it enough to overcome their pasts?

Filled with heat, humor and emotion this is a story about two people who not only complete each other but are each other’s destiny and finally get their second chance.

I love a good 2nd chance childhood love story.

Oh these Cook brothers are something else. They are a little bit of everything all wrapped up in a nice sexy package. This was a fun heart warming story. But it was also about finding ones self. And hoping it's not to late to mend wounds that run deep. Another great read by Harvey.

Girl let me save you the damn trouble bc I didn’t even finish this pile of shit and y’all shouldn’t start it.

This shit was one star and five fucking tomatoes.

All the other reviews fooled the hell outta me. 4.4 stars?? I said, why not. It’s gonna be good, right?

Nah.

Very, very early on, I realized I clearly am not the target audience for this book because all these mfs are dumb as hell.

I was like, oh childhood lovers? Rekindled love? Sounds sweet. I’d love to read.

Bitch! When I tell you, within 24 hours of them meeting again AFTER 12 FUCKING YEARS, the woman (girl I don’t remember any damn name in this book - I just remember the Cooks and the Bakers. Now ask me who’s who? G*nshot to my head, bitch I’d be dead). Anyway, the woman meets the man again after 12 years and tells him leaving him (like literally ran away like a thief in the night, girl) was the biggest mistake of her life and she wants to give them another chance.

And what did that bobblehead ass man do? Try to “call her bluff” and say, “if you’re really serious about us, you’ll marry me — right fucking now. Let’s go to the courthouse.”

Bitch huh???

And this woman said yes!!

Mind you, these mfs haven’t even been within the same STATE LINES in TWELVE FUCKING YEARS.

In 24 fucking hours, they are in the same room for the first time in over a decade — don’t even have any actual conversation, mind you, just jump straight to the ultimatum and then move in together to this hazardous house that the man is rebuilding.

It was screaming, belting really, extreme caucasity.

And, really, it’s my bad for taking the word of a bunch of middle-aged white women who are living vicariously through these characters.

If I could give it zero stars, I would.

Bryant and Faith's story ended up being nice, but the main points of the plot had a touch of ridiculousness and the lack of communication prevented me from totally enjoying this romance. The "in love since we were kids" trope was a nice touch for this story, as the chemistry, mutual respect, and deep friendship between these two was definitely very clear. The pain that their breakup from 12 years ago was also very evident, especially for Bryant because Faith didn't tell him why she had to go.

So much of the hesitancy, confusion, and hurt feelings could have been avoided if they would have had some difficult conversations early on in their "arrangement" rather than doing what they thought the other wanted/needed to prove their relationship would work without actually asking and discussing it.

Thankfully this romance was saved by the connection Bryant and Faith shared. They were really great together and there was somehow minimal awkwardness after 12 years spent apart. (Fiction, am I right?!) After getting over my initial eyeroll at how their relationship restarted, I was able to enjoy the cute moments that came up during the time they spent together, along with the respect and adoration they showed each other. Even though they were confused about the exact direction of their relationship and if it would work out, they treated each other so well and it was super clear they were meant to be together.

And the love keeps coming for the Cook boys!

Working Back was book 3 in The Cook Brothers series. It was about Bryant who is one of the twins who is a Biology Professor at the local college. He has been in love with Faith since he met her when he was 8 years old. They were best friends growing up. When they were 22 he actually asked her to marry him. And she turned him down and quickly and quietly left town. He didn't hear from her for 12 years.
Now Faith is back in town for one of Bryant's brother's wedding and she wants to talk to him.

What happens when these two come together? Can they see a way to get back together after all this time? Is there too much heart ache between them to ever reconsider it?

Definitely a must read story. These two have my heart. Great read and a book truly hard to put down. Thank you BJ Harvey. Now I am ready for Book 4. Enjoy!

Really enjoyed this grew-up-next-door-to-each-other-childhood-friends-to-lovers-I've-only-ever-loved-you-second-chance romance. Faith and Bryant were each others first for everything and when he asked her to marry him at 22, she said no, and moved as far away as she could to Sydney and stayed there for 12 years before returning for his twin brother's wedding.
She left to grow up away from all the pressure and expectation of being Faith to his Bryant and came back for a second chance, only to have Bryant give her an ultimatum to marry him, so they get hitched a few days later and this is the story of them finding their way back to each other.
There's the usual hilarity from the cast of family members, and cameos from the ladies from the Bliss series under the cover of a sex toy party for ladies only.

I love the general idea, woman who chase love and realize her mistakes. But 12 years? I mean come on!

She made mistakes, she wanted to find herself in her youth. I get it, you were only 22. But 12 years? Plus left Bry cold after he obviously try to contact her? Plus her grovel felt like half-hearted to me. She put on sass immediately after declaring she will show Bry that she meant it? I can't even..

Plus her reason for running away all those years ago, because she always run when things got overwhelming? Hhh.. it's not cute on man, nor on woman. If man do this, I would call him a jerk. So yes, Faith, I have faith in you that you're a jerk.

Fantastic read

This is a beautifully written book of second chances. I felt all of their emotions; the happiness, the loss, the heartache, the fear and excitement, the longing and their love for each other. Who doesn't want a second chance at that first amazing love? This was such an emotional and beautifully written book. The chemistry between Faith & Bryant sizzled throughout this wonderful read. Do yourself a favor...read this book.
