In Clyde's latest adventure, he lets his imagination run away with him!
Clyde is looking forward to seeing his friends again after a long break from school. Once they're together, they all share exciting stories that sound much more fun than how Clyde spent his days. In order to fit in, Clyde claims that he went to space camp--and then outer space! But his friends are skeptical, and they want to see proof. Can Clyde come up with a way to convince them his lie is true, or will he have to come clean?
I've really enjoyed what I've read of the Clyde the Hippo series, so it's no surprise that this one was equally as satisfying. Clyde comes back to school after a long break and begins hearing about all the cool things his classmates did while they were away. His break wasn't nearly as adventurous, so he makes up something to tell them on the spot. When they demand proof of his experience, he tries to cover it up before admitting the truth. You can't help but empathize with Clyde as he comes clean. Thankfully, it's a super sweet ending and the illustrations are just so stinkin' adorable!

Clyde the Hippo is a character who appears in four titles by the husband and wife team of Keith and Larissa Marantz. Larissa has worked as a character designer for Nickelodeon and has illustrated books for a number of their properties, including The Last Airbender and Wild Thornberries. This picture book reads like a short episode of a cartoon and will appeal to fans of that style.
After a school vacation, four friends compare stories of what they did and how much fun they had while apart. It seems that everyone has gone on an amazing adventure except for Clyde. Embarrassed, Clyde makes up a fanciful story about meeting a Martian. His friends demand proof, and he knows he must come clean and tell them the truth.
This is a useful selection for opening up conversation with little ones. It provides an opportunity to talk with children about truth and friendship, and nicely shows how to take a deep breath, be brave, and admit to fibbing. It also shows a great example of forgiveness and moving forward in friendship. Ideal for a one-to-one reading time in which the child can feel safe thinking about a time when they may have stretched the truth.
Three stars because the writing style is a little awkward and the illustrations feel flat.
When Clyde's friends tell him all about the fun they had over break, Clyde, who spent his break snacking and watching TV, tells a lie. He says he went to Space Camp and took a trip to outer space and has a picture to prove it. When his friends want to see the picture, Clyde realizes he's in trouble and spends the next evening trying to create one.
I love this "Clyde the Hippo" series. He isn't naughty, just makes poor choices - ones that lots of kids make. Marantz's illustrations are so cute, and story ends perfectly - it naturally leads right into a discussion about Clyde and what happens when you tell a lie. Mostly, you feel bad and your friends are disappointed.
Clyde the lovable (and anxious) hippo is back! This time, Clyde is reunited with his friends after a long break. He hear's about the wonderful things they said they did during this time. Clyde however, had a far less exciting time. But in trying to fit-in and one-up his friends, he makes up a fantastical account of his 'adventures'!
The lie grows more elaborate, and eventually Clyde is faced with the problem that always happens when a tall tale becomes too big.
Larissa Marantz's art brings Clyde and his friends to life once again. The simple forms and bright colors appeal to young readers, while emotive expressions and body language help children better empathize with Clyde emotions.
Clyde the Hippo is back! In this adventure, the ever adorable Clyde returns to school after a long break to hear all of his friends have gone on amazing trips. In order to fit in, Clyde makes up an amazing trip of his own. When his friends ask for proof, Clyde needs to get creative. What will happen if they find out his lie? Like all the Clyde books, the story is perfect for young children navigating friendships in school. The art is bright and cheerful, drawing you in to the story and inviting you to root for the anxious lovable Clyde.
What's a hippo to do after hearing stories about his friends' amazing summer break (when he didn't do anything spectacular)? Tell a big fat whopper of course! Clyde the Hippo tells his friends he went to space camp and met an alien, then has to prove it when his friends don't believe him. Will Clyde see the error of his ways? This is another great title from Keith and Larissa Marantz, perfect for talking about tough issues with preschoolers.

Clyde lied! Oh gosh, poor Clyde. His friends all have great adventures on school break, and Clyde feels like he has to brag too! (What he doesn't realize is sitting at home doing nothing is very much an awesome vacation, especially with oh! Possum Puffs.)
The gorgeous, colorful illustrations brighten up each page. I love Larissa's characters and expressions! This might be my favorite Clyde book.
I found this is a bargain bin at a grocery store and immediately adored the illustrations. I bought it for my infant daughter and read it to her, and I thought it was adorable.
