In this clear and informed guide to the business model that's set to dominate twenty-first-century commerce, Adam Levinter makes a compelling case that the phenomenal success of companies like Amazon, Netflix, Spotify, and Salesforce wouldn't be possible without the foundation they all have in common: subscription. A surge of subscription boxes in 2012 earned buzz for offering everything from razors to meal kits to underwear; since then the model has proven to be adaptable, profitable, and resilient, even as many traditional retailers struggle to stay relevant in the digital economy. Levinter takes a close look at the leaders of the subscription-based economy to pinpoint the essential elements of the model, and prove that while the basic concept may be as old as magazines, the ubiquity of the internet is enabling a new way for businesses to scale and succeed. The Subscription Boom shows that the appeal to both customers and businesses makes subscription a smart play for virtually any business.
💭Have you ever shopped from any of e-commerce websites or watched a movie on any of the OTT platforms? How was your experience? Do you aspire to continue with these platforms as it is or do you feel, there should be some implementation of improvements in them ? Do let me know about your thoughts.

The book is all about the concept of subscriptions, which is very common now a days. The book covers the detailed descriptions of the subscription model in marketing businesses as of why and how subscription strategy works, and what is its origin. To support the knowledge and facts given in the book, author has also presented some substantial datas and case studies of some of the renowned brands like Amazon, Netflix, Spotify etc as to depict how subscription programmes has given a boost to their companies. I think it's a great idea to connect with the audience at a more personal basis. The book talks about how subscription stratergy have changed the entire game of the online marketing businesses. A single subscription plan may not be much of a big deal to a customer in general, but how it adds upto the industrial values of the brands and companies and provides them with a revenue kick. It also lays out that why subscription models are the future of e-commerce industries.
🪄My take on the story -
Book is much of a slow paced one which inflicts a feeling of dullness at some points during the read. Writing is although lucid. However the topic of the book is very fresh and new to me. It can be a very useful book for people in marketing sectors, business, tech industries and people planning for their own startups. Also it's kind of a monotonous read for me because of its extreme factual descriptions. Personally I don't feel the cover to be as delightful, the cover can be made more interesting by inclusion of different marketing tool visuals and graphics. Title is also not very innovative but okayish kind of.
🎀Rating - 3.5/5 ⭐
🕯️I will recommend this book to those people who wants to know about latest techniques and trends of subscription model as a business strategy.
A look into leading subscription box companies and some major subscription-based businesses. The key thing to be aware of is that this book looks at these selected companies and their entire rise to prominence (their evolution from beginning to present), rather than looking at the vast ecosystem of subscription models and practices. Its focus is more on clever startup pivots than the evolving world of subscription models.
The companies covered are Amazon, Netflix, Salesforce, Shopify, Spotify, and many physical subscription box companies (ipsy, birchbox, glossybox, boxycharm, plated, barkbox, dollar shave club, gentleman's box, etc). Many popular IPO stories and the history of Napster are in here too.
This book just left a lot to be desired. Given the subtitle, I expected a deep dive into how everything is transitioning into a subscription model over one-time payments. How have companies and individuals adapted to the subscription model? Individuals and businesses whose source of income is through recurring payments, Patreon, Youtube/Facebook paid channel memberships, Onlyfans, paid podcasts like Anchor, and so many others: are they faring better in a subscription model? How have we collectively changed with this transition? We now use subscriptions for software, music, news, tv+movies, video games, productivity apps, and everything that can be physically delivered to the house (food, clothing, household items). Has it been a net positive for consumers, or are there downsides? What are game passes, loot boxes, and player packs doing to kids who grow up with them? I don't know, I just keep thinking of things I would have rather heard about than subscription boxes.
Even when companies like Netflix are discussed, I was expecting more talk about their retention rate, or how they get users back, and how they keep a user's profile for a set time after canceling, etc. I would've also liked to know more about the automotive industry getting into the subscription business. New services offered by Audi and Porsche are mentioned in the beginning of the book, but only a brief mention.

The common word that we see in all these apps is SUBSCRIPTION. Subscription allows these apps to make money. Author Adam Levinter is a Founder and President of Scriberbase.
This book is soulfully devoted to the word " Subscription" Why we all need to know about it? In the old days, we hace seen people to have magazine's subscriptions and that's the only thing we see nowadays in the web series and much more apps.
The book is divided into 12 chapters giving us lots of knowledge about the business strategies with the help of life incidences.
The writing is slow paced and much more for the people who are addicted to business.
What I liked about the book is, in the world of mellennial, we get the chance of knowing the actual business strategies in the simple language.

This is an amazing and relatable book . Written so picturesquely. If you've ever fallen for someone you'll find the book so apt. The author has put so much of life experience in so little, it's so unbelievable. The author writes that subscriptions are common in all the details of this book today. This book is a bit slow and based entirely on facts. The author also integrated various case studies of all fast-growing platforms that appear under this model, such as Netflix, Amazon, Spotify, etc. It provides readers with a very clear picture. Regarding how the subscription business flourishes and how subscriptions become the backbone of today's business and are very beneficial to the business. A well-categorized plot and impressive storytelling add to its quirks. Fully understand many theoretical explanations and examples. Great job by Adam Levinter, and wishing this book heaps of success! What's the big idea and/or unique approach of this book? This books is a solid overview of how different industries are developing subscription models, from software to physical products.
How am I smarter, better, or wiser because of it? I honestly didn't learn a lot, but that's not really this book's fault. It's that I've read about 8-9 books on subscription models already so I had heard all of these examples before.
Was I entertained/did it keep my attention? The book was well written with enough details, but framed in good stories.
Would I recommend it to others? It's a good set of examples and if you're exploring what's possible, it's a good read. If you already have an idea and want to know how to build your subscription plan, then it doesn't get deep enough into each example to be good for that.

This book demonstrates the subscription procedure. The author has provided case studies of subscription-based businesses. It talks about successful firms like Amazon, Netflix, and Spotify, and it teaches the reader about how subscriptions are employed by startups. It's a nonfiction title. This is all about innovation and marketing, and it is both educational and easy to comprehend for people interested in learning more about these topics. The book moves at a leisurely pace and is entirely factual. People who wish to learn more about business technology will find this book quite fascinating. The narrative is well-crafted, and the storytelling is rather outstanding.
Every chapter of the twelve chapers has an interesting and amusing meaning that i wanna read it more and more. Everybody need an account to sign in and to subscribe in to watch and enjoy shows, series and movies. I truely say that i have every account to enjoy. I had subscribed in every app to enjoy my free time. The situation we are facing now and the only thing we do is to enjoy the time we have by watching series, movies, animes, and many. The author had mentioned about subscription and many thing that are useful. Although this book only states about the useful things and not a story type but we can learn about technology more.
As someone with a marketing background, I have found the subscription focus (eg. boxes, memberships etc), and 'captive' consumer (eg. iTunes) very interesting, and increasing. I wanted to consider it in more detail, so signed up to this book, which was a useful read. I think it would be interesting to all - from business people thinking about how subscription might adapt offerings in their industry, through to consumers who consume products via some kind of subscription. Plenty of examples, thoughts and approaches. Thanks to NetGalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!
For most of the book, it was really more of a historical comparative analysis between companies disrupting their industries by applying subscription business models. In that sense, this book read more like a school textbook.
But, towards the end the author started to tie up all the examples to make predictions on where the industry may be heading, and how the business reader may take advantage of that.
Personally I would have preferred summary-style takeaways and how to apply that takeaway each chapter. But the author did eventually come through at the end, so it rates well in my library.
This is a book of biographies of many subscription based companies. It missed my expectations just because of its misplaced subtitle. It's not a book on 'why subscription model is the future', but partially on 'how many startups used subscription as its model' and on the story of the startups and their respective founders.
Read this if you want to know about these companies. Avoid this if you wanted to learn/know about subscription model as a business strategy.
3 stars book, but a -1 just for the misleading subtitle.
I liked how the author provided a variety of case studies to help the reader gain understanding. The plot as a whole is intriguing. I liked how the author came up with the idea of writing on a subscription basis. This story had a novel plot that I like. The author has demonstrated how subscription plans are created. The book is highly educational, and I recommend it to everyone. The Kindle version of this book is more affordable than the hardback version, which costs thousands of dollars. It's well worth reading.
This was a great book. It was informative and interesting. I enjoyed the way the author educates the reader about the history of the subscription model and how that has been implemented in different categories. I liked how the strengths and shortcomings of each company were explored and found myself shocked at exactly how many companies currently employ this business model. Definitely loved reading the most about the big companies as well as the female led companies that I notice are often only side notes in most books. This book was well researched and a cool read. I highly recommend it to others eager to see how the subscription model continues to shape our society.
Adam has written a comprehensive history of "subscription businesses" that effectively and elegantly explains why today's direct-to-consumer businesses win and lose. It's an interesting, well-researched book that any brand-owner -- especially anyone running a DTC brand -- should make the time to read....
This story tells us that the attract to both customers and businesses makes subscription a smart play for effectively any business . Overall it is a interesting book.... Loved to read it...
