Miss Sarah Crosby knows she is already considered a spinster.
Sent to London in order to take care of her aunt and help her cousin to make her debut, she has no hope for her own future. It is only when Miss Bavidge introduces her to Lady Smithton that she finally starts to believe that she might be able to have a life of her own.
Unfortunately, most of her time is taken up accompanying her cousin, Miss Sophia Marks. Much to her shame, Sarah finds herself becoming greatly interested in one of her cousin’s suitors, Lord Daniel Ruddington. He is quiet and retiring, barely smiles and seems to carry a great weight on his shoulders but she is still drawn to him.
Lord Daniel Ruddington has no-one he can turn to.
Pretending that he is nothing more than a gentleman enjoying London society, he hides a great secret and a furious anger within his heart as he attempts to further his acquaintance with Miss Sophia Marks. However, his gaze is so often drawn to her companion, her quiet, kind nature contrasting with his determination for revenge.
Will he be able to take his revenge? Or will Miss Crosby be the one to stop him?
Rose has read her way through countless romances over the years, “borrowing” them from her older sisters, and hiding them from her mother.
She has a special love for Regency romances and when she began writing, the Regency period was a natural place to start. The ton, the wealthy families, the Season, the dilemmas, and yes, the marriages, have always fascinated her.
She loves a happy ever after! Now she is happy to bring this passion to her stories and share it with her readers.
On a personal note, Rose lives in North Carolina, is married, and has a terrier that barks too much. She enjoys taking him for walks to tire him out!
I finished this book because I wanted to add it to my challenge and I've been in a reading slump. There was no real story. The hero was anything but a hero. At one time he was reflecting on himself and said Sarah was 'sad, unhappy and crying' for most of the story. It did nothing for me and I skimmed it from about 40% in.
Miss Sarah Crosby is a chaperone to her cousin for her first season, in one of those balls she had to attend she meets Lord Daniel Ruddington and they both are smitten with each other. But this loving couple had big problems; for Sarah it was that she didn't had any hope of one day marrying someone as important as Daniel, for she thought very little of her position in society and herself, and thought she coudn't possibly compete with someone as beautiful and revered as her cousin, Miss Sophia Marks, but even knowing that, she just coundn't stop herself for falling a bit more in love with Daniel every time they were together. As to Daniel he hides a great and furious anger within his heart that makes he start courting Miss Sophia as a weapon to the revenge he had wanted for years. But then he meets Sarah, the woman who he would start to love. What is he to do? let the hatred out of his heart and give up his so desired revenge to be with her or lose the person he loves the most in the world? This reading is very light and enjoyable to follow, and makes you fascinated to find out how the ending and the happily ever after of the couple will happen. Rose Pearson fans will absolutely love how she developed this novel. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
3.5 stars. I like the idea of this series, a more experienced woman helping the wallflowers find a match. I did enjoy this book although I found it to be a little ‘wordy’ in parts. Lady Smithton very caring with the women she is helping but I still feel she is making Lord Havisham pay for something that was her father’s fault. Miss Sarah Crosby does flourish under Lady Smithton’s influence and her new clothes give her more confidence. I was glad to see her sticking up for herself. There is the question of the revenge of Viscount Daniel Ruddington and the reason for this is eventually revealed. This was an enjoyable read. I received a copy via Booksprout and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This is a deeply dissatisfying book. I really want people who have done something bad to pay for it. Sarah and Daniel meet, Daniel courts Sarah's cousin for revenge even though he is developing feelings for Sarah, and then Sarah and Daniel finally get together. All this is on the back cover of the book. Well, not the Sarah and Daniel get together part. But this is a period romance novel. Everyone knows that will eventually happen going into the book. But the lack of any revenge upon the cousin's father offends my sense of justice and I find myself angry over it. I can't bring myself to care that it might be more accurate for the class and time period but I want some kind of justice. It ruins the entire book for me. I'm marking it as spoilers even though I've not been specific on it. Because it is a complaint about the ending of the book.

Vibrant with how it must have been at the time, characters with real depth, and a plot that kept you turning the pages. Would read more from this author!
Lord Daniel Ruddington🐺🍆⛲ decides on a plan to avenge his sister's ruin at the hands of the son of the Baron Briton👺. The son tore her dress nearly off and hit her and attempted to rape her, and was caught in the act! The Baron👺 blamed all on Daniel's sister, so if course, she was ruined.
Miss Sarah Crosby💃 is the spinster companion and chaperone for the Baron Britton's daughter, Miss Marks💋. Miss Marks '💋 attitude of a constant flirt is not getting her a beau and Sarah💃 decides to get help from Lady Smithton.
Lady Smithton agrees to take them both on and find them husbands, after she puts some training to make them more acceptable to the gentlemen of the Ton.
Daniel🐺🍆⛲ is going to court Miss Marks and ruin her reputation as his way of avenging his sister But along the way, Sarah💃 and he fall in love💘 and he begins to have second thoughts about his plan.
ARC Received from Booksprout🌱 I also got this book with KU.
I loved this different kind of historical romance💕! Not your usual kind of romance. There is an attempted rape discussed by the characters in the book, but it is not portrayed in an actual scene, it's just talked about. It's possible it could be a trigger for some readers. This is a sweet romance💕.
I usually forgo a review if I am going to leave one but this was so awful I had to leave a few words. This was the most shallow romance I’ve ever read. There’s nothing to like in the protagonist nor her love interest. Ruddington is neither engaging, witty or even principled. Protagonist is just boring. I was flummoxed and kept thinking I’d get to the meat of the story but it never came. They meet several times and decide they’re in love, which is just weird. And there’s literally nothing good about this story other than it ended, albeit abruptly. Yikes! How does this nonsense even get published?
Another great story by Rose Pearson. A love triangle that is full of romance and what will happen. A story of a spinster who has the competition of her cousin in finding love.

I really loved the heroine in this story. Also the hero, even though you knew he had revenge on his mind. I am so glad they got their HEA. These two deserved it.
This is the third book of the Spinster Guild a group of young women who are being helped by Lady Smithton and Lord Havisham to find love. All the ladies for one reason or other feel they are Spinster with no hope of finding a Husband and they love they want. Miss Sarah Crosby has come to town to help her cousin thru her first season. Miss Sophia Marks is a selfish, spoiled brat. She has no intention to do as her father wants and find a husband. She wants to play and be the center of attention to all the young gentleman. She is young and very pretty and has them following her like sheep. Both Sarah and Sophia fathers are titled Gentleman. Something Sophia forgets and treats Sarah as a servant most of the time. Lord Daniel Ruddington is man on a mission one of Hatred and Revenge. He wants to get even with the family who ruined his sister. He knows what he plans to do with also ruin an innocent young lady who had nothing to do with the wrong done his sister. He has talked himself into believing it's the only way. At one of the Balls he runs into Sarah and almost knocks her down. He finds out she is the chaperone to Sarah who he has been looking for an introduction. Now to put his plan into action. Unfortunate Daniel has not counted on meeting someone like Sarah. As he spends time with her to be around her cousin, he can't help the attraction to the wrong lady or is she the right one. With secrets on both sides can these two learn what is really important in time or will it be too late. All of Rose's books are clean reads with romance added for spice. I received and ARC from the author and want to thank her. This is my opinion and voluntarily give it.
My second book of the author.. I'm not a fan of her heroes but love her heroines.. her writing style is engaging and passionate and yet leaves you wanting in the end.. her heroines are kind of bold for my taste considering the era.. but they possess kindness and strength in character and spirit, which I love.. so far in the two books that I've read, they're the ones professing their feelings or chasing the heroes.. while the heroes are always confused, hurting the heroines by always deciding to choose other paths than be with the heroines from the beginning 'til almost the final chapters, which frustrate me to no end.. In this one, I've noticed the author made the heroine contradict herself when she told the hero she hasn't told him that her father is titled, when earlier in the book, when they bumped into each other, she mentioned it.. 'though the hero was distracted focusing solely on his plans to meet Miss Marks.. overall another interesting read.. but I don't think I'll be pursuing to read anymore of these books.
A Gentleman's Revenge continues Rose Pearson's series that tackles the prejudices of the "ton" in Regency England and it's effects on women. I really like the twist Rose presents in this novel, where those outside society's norm set the "beau monde" on their collective "arses" ! In a Gentleman's Revenge, another member of the so-called Spinsters Guild, gets her chance at romance. Once again Rose Pearson's development of her main character's transformation from a weak mouse to a women who recognizes her worth, is very well done. Her description of the period, the events and people encountered is like a trip through time. Like good fiction is meant to do, A Gentleman's Revenge provided a welcome escape from my daily tasks. It was a lovely respite. Add a cup of tea and a roaring fire and the lovely interlude is complete. I recommend you pick up this novel as well as the rest of the series. It is not your normal Regency romance; it's better!
Even though I figured out why the H was lying I still enjoyed most of the story. I have said many times how I dislike stories where secrets are kept. This one was kept through 90% of the book. As he finally confesses his reason, you understand what drove him. Still doesn't make it right, but I forgave him somewhat.
This is a clean story only kisses at the end. I was disappointed how the story just ends abruptly. If ever a story cried for an epilogue it is this one. I wanted to know how did the cousin react when the H/h declared their love. Did anyone confront the cousin's father?
No cheating, HEA, little on romance and clean. The story ends at the 90% mark on my e-reader. Rest is blurb for the next in the series. (ljb)
Sarah is in London to play chaperone to her cousin. Daniel is drawn to her, but he is determined to court her cousin Miss Marks in order to enact his revenge.
Hmm... I can't say I enjoyed this book. For me, Daniel is far too unlikeable. As unpleasant as Miss Marks is, she is not responsible for what happened in the past, and Daniel fully intends to ruin her. Even worse, he works toward it even while knowing he is hurting Sarah. It is very difficult to like him. He's even horribly rude to Sarah on their first meeting, and I find it hard to believe she would have any affection for him.
The book wasn't terrible, but it's too hard to get behind a romance where you dislike one half of the couple quite so much.
This is a clean book to read, with a nice plot but it ended at what I felt was three quarters of the way through the story. If all the ramifications of the story had been taken to the end, it would have been a much more satisfying read. For example one lady gets asked to elope, she says yes,but he changes his mind, the the same man tells that lady’s cousin that he loves her, and not the one he wanted to elope with. And yet there is nothing told of the ramifications of this! How the First Lady or the cousin felt and what came of it all. It’s absurd really to think a story can be ended like that.
I found this story tedious. There is way too much internal dialogue, which goes over the same points ad nauseam. What could have been the most dramatic part of the book, when Ruddington gets Miss Marks alone, was simply summarized as a flashback, thus stealing any possibility for excitement. By about 80% of the way through, I started skimming.
The author seems to have a good grasp of grammar, although the apostrophe was missing half the time when it was needed for the possessive form for Miss Marks.
Sarah has been acting as a companion to her cousin in her first season in London. She is essentially ignored by members of the ton. She along with another of the ignored ask for help in finding a possible husband from an older lady who has been able to ignore rumors about her. Daniel has come to London to get revenge for his older sister. He meets Sarah because he is interested in her cousin. He and Sarah run into each other often but what is going to happen between them.
This was an interesting story. Daniel was attempting to right a wrong that was done to his sister by Marks Britton. Britton attempted to take from his sister what she was not willing to give. No justice for his attempt was given. Miss Crosby was a companion to Sophia and she really liked Daniel. Daniel was going to shame Sophia for revenge, for what was done to his sister. Read this story and realize the revelation.
You are such an accomplished writer for me I feel I was born in the worst time. For myself I love everything about time where love was something to fragile to be foolish and your family would be destroyed. The story is everything I truly enjoy where love is not confused with the physical. At 67 yrs. old it's my favourite era in history, and your do it so well you bring the characters to mind and actually seen in my mind. Thank you Carmen
This is a story of a young woman, Sarah, who is acting as a chaperone for her cousin, Sophia, and is being treated as little more than a servant by her charge and her parents. Sophia is difficult to manage as she doesn’t act as a young lady should. She’s flirtatious and flighty and rather immature. An interesting twist, a handsome Viscount and a bit of romance.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story. It epitomizes the fact that two wrongs don't make a right. Even more touching was that those wronged chose to forgive even though the perpetrators felt no consequences. The ending is lovely, albeit slightly abrupt. I think this story would have benefitted if it had an epilogue or a little more on how things played out beyond the last scene. Still worth reading though.
Novel is well-written, especially in the conversational area and reflects the era. However, the plot is singular with a bit of mystery towards the end. Surprise there wasn't more of a recognition of names as the mystery unravels between the past and present without it being addressed. Lovely cover with a bit of Cinderella concept between cousins. Not much action, however maintained my interest.
Revenge is never the answer but the Lord was overcome with anger and sought vengeance as a way to obtain justice. Miss Crosby, acting as companion to her cousin in her first Season, was attracted to him as he was the first gentleman to treat her with respect. Will his thirst for vengeance destroy all their futures?
Sarah's struggle with self confidence in one many of us women go through. It is heartbreaking and hard to overcome. Unrequited love on top of that is the double edged sword. Forgiveness? Well, we all know how hard that one is! Well written, great characters.
By the time I was halfway through A Gentleman's Revenge, I found myself wishing I had marked every time the word "murmured" was used. Honestly, that should be the title of this book. Sadly, I started paying more attention to the use of "murmured " than to the story. Daniel and Sarah's story is very sweet, but I think at least one more good edit is still needed.
Our Hero sets out for revenge, but after meeting the lady he set out ruin he’s not sure. Her companion is way to beautiful and smart! Can the heart turn from revenge to love?
A GENTLEMAN’S REVENGE: is an easy read. The story is about revenge, as stated. Our hero, LUDDINGTON, must avenge his sister. Our heroine, MISS CROSBY is related to the perpetrator’s family. It’s a mediocre jumble to the end.
