Reading the books 1 to 5 is always like finally being able to breathe after almost suffocating.

Sal slowly learns to trust her instincts and we get to know her world a little better with each page. Feelings grow between her and Jase, but both are so insanely insecure and shy about it. It's agonizingly sweet how their relationship is progressing all too slowly. At the same time, events are rushing in, revealing what a military genius Sal is and what dangers lurk everywhere for her.
I mostly loved the moments between her and Jase when they finally get to know each other better and we learn how deeply Jase loves her and how complex his personality is. The quiet moments between them are the best.

Egotistic and Arrogant
It’s hard to like a character that has an over abundance of egotism and arrogance. That sort of character is usually reserved for the “bad guy”. Sal’s not the only one with gag worthy arrogance. All of the Blades are arrogant.
It wasn’t just a whole platoon of arrogance that turned me off, it was the lack of a story plot. Out of 47 chapters, only chapters 43-46 were worth reading. The whole story revolves around Sal having the same conversation with several different people about her feelings for Blaec and Cyno. *gag* And having no sex scenes in a reverse harem novel doesn't work well with this series.
I hope the books get better because I have 9 books in this series.

REREAD: JULY 2022
Rereading one of my favourite series since the author has released updated and extended editions of all the books.
Instinctual is the second instalment in the Rise of the Iliri series and Sal’s path through adversity and self-empowerment. In this book, we truly begin to see the shift in dynamics, focusing more on the political battle and the Blades working around the revelation of “outing” themselves as Iliri to the military and their superiors. In the gutter town communities, a rebellion is stirring while a few empathetic humans emerge to the Iliri side.
I enjoy everything about the character development in this book. We see a much softer side of Jase/Cyno, and Zep grows in confidence as Sal’s “big brother” and honorary Iliri. I love the developing father-daughter relationship between Sal and Ran. It feels special and comforting to know that the Black Blades have someone on their side. One thing I appreciate about this series, too, is that you meet so many different characters throughout the story, impacting Sal and her journey in small and different ways. The outcome isn't always obvious or immediate, but that's what I love about this style of a more extended epic fantasy series.
Something that I did pick up in my reread that I perhaps overlooked originally is that there is, at times, a lot of repeated dialogue - e.g. when something happens, and a character needs to explain it to multiple people, we’re given the entire convo every time. It felt a bit much and is something I thought may have been picked up in the updates.
I’m biased, but I love this book - I’d recommend it to any fans of epic high fantasy. It does have romance, and it is RH, but this book is very light on those themes and has almost no spice. Although, it does end with Sal and Jase leaving the Blades alone for an extended mission, which promises to give more opportunities for romance.
The changes to this book don’t jump out at me but the writing feels clean.

What a great sequel to the first book. Sal is adapting to her true self and finding out who she is. It frustrated me in the first book that she kept being pushed into trying to be who and what she is not - so this was a welcomed shift.
Jase is my absolute favourite! Who knew one of the best assassins in the country could be such a dedicated, sweet man. I’m still warming up to Blaec, but at least he’s pulled his head out of his ass.
So excited for the next adventure!

Loving This
This was an excellent sequel and I'm going right into the next book. I'm still loving Sal and Cyno. Blaec is coming along pretty well and Zep is definitely another favorite. I like Geoni and Zyrn, too and even Sal's new human friends. Now Sal and Cyno are off on a long mission. That should be interesting.

Now that Hadley has lured you into this series with the reverse harem premise of this epic science fiction/fantasy saga, there is not much sexiness in this individual book. Sorry romance readers: This story is for those of us who adore sweeping political adventures, both across empires and closer to home (in this case, within and between military units). Sal learns more about herself as an iliri, which does extend to her relationships with multiple men. But these relationships are used more as characterization plot points than as the focus of the story itself.
I already knew going in that this is a long series, so I’m okay with taking the long view regarding Sal and her relationships with the other characters. Through another character’s abilities, Hadley has hinted that the ending pay-off will be both epic and huge. I’ve already read enough of their work to trust in this author’s ability to deliver.
If you enjoyed the first book in this series, Instinctual is worth a shot. But like I said above, this series has already moved past the more cliché side of the reverse harem trope. Instead, it is a feature of the iliri themselves, and I look forward to following both Sal’s character arc and the growth of this fascinating half fantasy/half science fiction world.

How can do many people not be right?
Continuation of my review of the first book. I had told you how after 20%, the first time I tried to read book one, I stopped an didn't read it further. Then, some friends on Facebook kept saying about how Ms. Harleys books were so good, that I had to try again. I came to the same 20%, still no idea why and I wanted to stop reading, but how could do many people not he right? So, I pushed on, and suddenly her world opened up to me, and I fell in love. Now, I just finished book two, holy cow it got even better. That was yesterday. I finished the first book, I'm already done with the second! I saw a post today on Facebook that someone else read her books in like three days and was ticked because her housework, chores, and life went by the wayside because she couldn't stop. So, there you go! Another great read and I'm on to book three. It's going to be a tiring day tomorrow.

This book helps the series to gather momentum, in this world where iliri have been horribly abused and murdered just because they are iliri. The h gains more confidence in herself, and her place in her pack. Together they show others what it means to be iliri, and for some it is so terrifying, they try to kill her, for others it inspires them to hope for more. Perhaps there is a little too much telling, and it does get repetitive yet I really like the writing style and world building. The writer has given us 'not perfect' characters, in this book they are all starting to accept and believe in themselves as a race who can make a difference to their world. The glossary at the end was really good, (it even had declensions - sigh!). It reminded me a little of Tolkien and the Elvish language.

Instead of having the characters say 'Sal told Blaec everything that happen'. The same event would be repeated to every single character word per word. Making it unnecessarily repetitious.

Interesting Fantaverse find
World building is awesome not dry while characters & action are never boring. No slow spots. Hard to put down so I can sleep! Looking forward to each new discovery about heroines past, culture & gifts. Great series.

I think this is going to be one of those series where the bugs get worked out as the story progresses and every book is better than the one before.
These are scifi/fantasy and there are some logic blips here and there, but they are otherwise very good stories about alien species and humans with low tech and limited metal resources trying to figure out how to live with each other when one has been oppressing the other for millennia. It's got many different layers of prejudice, great examples of how things are cultural and learned, and examinations of ambiguous morality in the face of instinct.
Most of the adult times in this series are fade to black, although not all.
Just what the doctor ordered, frankly.

This one is slightly better with the explanations of what’s going on. I feel like I have a slightly better grasp but that I still feel like there are nuances and such that haven’t been mentioned in the book so idk why they are doing what they are doing. I wish when something like that happened the narrator would let whoever’s pov we are in, expand on those sentences.
Overall this is a deep fantasy with a lot going on. It’s crazy. Onto the next one.

Intense
It took me a while to get through the book, but Woah was it worth it. The world-building is phenomenal and the characters and society and culture are so intricate. The plot is gripping. 5 stars all around.

There are truly no words to express how absolutely over the top amazing this series is! It is a definite must read for any Epic Fantasy lovers. It does have adult themes that get savage.

Sooooo Good!
This series is brilliant. It’s only two books in and I live and breathe these characters. They are all strong and interesting characters that speak to my heart, all in such different ways. Auryn Hadley has created a fantastic world where species and politics are entwined. She is slowly building up the readers’ knowledge of the Iliran’s people and culture as Sal’s knowledge is being built up. Having Sal grow up surrounded by humans and having no knowledge of her own culture means that as she is taught so are we.
This books sees the consequences of Blaec outing the Black Blades as Iliri. We see how the politicians, the military and the people of the street start to view the Black Blades as well as the Iliri people as a whole. There are so many moving parts to this series it can be hard to keep track, what with the emotional, cultural, political and tactical all being involved at almost every step of the way. Auryn Hadley really is a very gifted author.
I cannot praise this series highly enough. I can’t wait to read the next book.

Impressive tactical details, disapointing FTB's
Another fantastic book from Auryn Hadley! Loved it. Very different feeling from the first, great development and drama building. The final dramatic plot drama reel!t a bit anticlimactic and not as great as the last books ending. Very interested to read how the next book goes. Still a bit disappointed in the fade to blacks for a romance novel. Also I don't get how this is a reverse harem at all but maybe it'll get bigger? Who knows. I'm hooked and I love this just wish it was a little bit more...moist.
Also I'm super impressed with the detail in military knowledge and plot manipulation that is more than just super basic tactics. Hats off.

This series just keeps getting more interesting. This is book 2 in the series, and Sal is trying to figure out what it really means to be an iliri, and trying to figure out what her instincts are telling her. We learn more about Cyno. I really like the world Hadley has built. It is complex, and intriguing! Sal is strong, yet still vulnerable in some ways. Prepare for the book/series addiction to set in :)

Still, I’ll read the next one because the plot is good and different than anything I’ve read lately. Although “you smell right” is almost as annoying as destined soulmates. 🙄

In this second book we learn more about the politics and society in the Conglomerate. We learn how Blaec expertly navigates the intricacies of parliament and the military structure, but makes a complete mess of his relation with Sal. Luckily, Sal can turn to Zep for advice and Cyno for acceptance of her illiri traits and needs. The Blades are a family, a pack and to grow stronger they face obstacles outside but also within their family dynamics. Together they manage though :)

I really love all the characters in this book. I especially enjoyed the first encounter with Blaz, who is one of my favourites. But there are a lot of characters introduced that will appear more in the later books. And finally there’s Kolt, not the best first (or maybe not so first) impression, but I still enjoyed it. It’s always a pleasure to re-visit Ogun and follow Sal on her journey.

Amazing
Sal's journey continues in book 2 and the Blades are tired of hiding. This was one epic adventure. The story flows flawlessly and builds into a steady climax. The characters are so well written that they seem real. Thats what makes these books so amazing.

How have I never reviewed this before???? This is my third reread of this amazing series and it is still just as good as the first time I dived into this complex world. It's sweeping, beautiful and often painful. A must read.

Please note that this review is for the SERIES, not the individual book.
Ok. I don't know where to begin. I want to say ALL the things because this series is all kinds of amazing. There is a not zero chance that my excitement may get away with me, so please excuse any seemingly random bits of rambling.
First off, this is an 11 book completed series that absolutely MUST be read in order as a series. You won't make heads nor tails of it if you try to pick and choose. This series is a little similar to the Five Fangs series by Mary Ann Weir. While there is a main character and her harem, this one also has a lot of communal storylines and relationships. It's one of the few 3rd person PoV that I have truly enjoyed, as it gives a better perspective on the entire experience. And this IS an experience.
A.H. Hadley is a master wordsmith. I've read most of her bibliography and enjoyed all of it. I was a bit skeptical about this series as 11 books are a heckuva commitment. I've been it recommended everywhere though, so I finally decided to give it a shot, and I wish I could personally thank every person who suggested it.
Her world building is a skill that most authors could learn from. From the rich history of the land and people to the customs and motives of the people, I was constantly taking information in and assimilating it from one book to the next. The true talent, though, is the fact that I never once felt overwhelmed by it.
The foundation is beautifully laid for the complex web of plotlines that permeates this story. There are plots within plots and plans without plans. Rise of the Iliri is a masterwork of the uncertain. I THOUGHT I knew what I was getting into. At numerous times while reading, I THOUGHT I knew what to expect. I was unprepared, and I loved every moment.
I do disagree with many of my fellow readers, however. This series was recommended as a reverse harem romance, but I'm just not sold on that. Yes, romance plays a part in the story arc. Yes, there are multiple men in a relationship with one woman. So, I guess that technically, they are correct. But it is so much more. The author labels it as "a complete epic science-fantasy story." I personally think it's more of a space opera. There is romance, but also anger and hatred, good verses evil, overcoming adversity, and amazing action sequences, plus plenty more that I can't find the words for. (But for the smut hounds, there are ample shenanigans which are relatively detailed and beautifully written)
The characters are never two dimensional. They start out fully fleshed out, but as the story progresses, they change. Traits become deeper. Thoughts become richer. They grow - as individuals as well as the groups. Especially Sal, the female main character. She has an entire evolution/metamorphosis arc that is without compare. I have never read anything quite like it.
If I could, I would rate this series as an 8 out of 5 stars. It exceeded my expectations in every way. Yes, it is a time commitment, but in all honesty, I didn't realize it. I started reading in book 1 and it consumed my attention until I closed book 11.

The FMC was conscripted into the military from her owner's home. Slavery is all through this story, so be prepared. And this is the one that kinda frakked me up - one of the MCs dies. Usually, I pass on books where that is in the content warning, however, in this instance, it becomes a jumping off point for the continuing progression of the story. I would encourage you to not let that particular TW prevent you from an otherwise truly remarkable reading experience.
Ok. I don't know where to begin. I want to say ALL the things because this series is all kinds of amazing. There is a not zero chance that my excitement may get away with me, so please excuse any seemingly random bits of rambling.
First off, this is an 11 book completed series that absolutely MUST be read in order as a series. You won't make heads nor tails of it if you try to pick and choose. This series is a little similar to the Five Fangs series by Mary Ann Weir. While there is a main character and her harem, this one also has a lot of communal storylines and relationships. It's one of the few 3rd person PoV that I have truly enjoyed, as it gives a better perspective on the entire experience. And this IS an experience.
A.H. Hadley is a master wordsmith. I've read most of her bibliography and enjoyed all of it. I was a bit skeptical about this series as 11 books are a heckuva commitment. I've been it recommended everywhere though, so I finally decided to give it a shot, and I wish I could personally thank every person who suggested it.
Her world building is a skill that most authors could learn from. From the rich history of the land and people to the customs and motives of the people, I was constantly taking information in and assimilating it from one book to the next. The true talent, though, is the fact that I never once felt overwhelmed by it.
The foundation is beautifully laid for the complex web of plotlines that permeates this story. There are plots within plots and plans without plans. Rise of the Iliri is a masterwork of the uncertain. I THOUGHT I knew what I was getting into. At numerous times while reading, I THOUGHT I knew what to expect. 3.5 Stars, Rounded Up
In this book, Sal and the Black Blades face plenty of drama. Now that their Iliri heritage is public knowledge, the leadership of their country, the Parlament, is determined to take them down, discredit them, and, if possible, kill them. Betrayal is around every corner. Although they have allies watching their backs, it’s still a fight for survival with a lot of political maneuvering.
The story is good, but the pacing is glacial. The same conversations are repeated multiple times with different people and even again with the same people. Sal continues to doubt her instincts and remains too worried about Blaec to fully embrace her love for Cyno (Jace). I still don’t understand why she’s stuck on Blaec and so easily admits she loves him when there’s no visible love or real emotion between them. They don’t look, feel, or act like they’re in love. Sal and Jace have a real relationship and real love. It's beautiful to read, but her continued denial is frustrating.
"You feel like a place I want to stay forever. This," and she gestured to the coffee on the table and the book beside him. "This feels like how it's meant to be. Home, Jase. You feel like home, and it doesn't matter if we're here, or in a tent in Escea, or knee-deep in snow in Anglia. It just feels like my home is supposed to be where you are. I don't know what you call that feeling."
Also, there’s almost no steam or spice in this book at all.
