HER ONLY CHOICE IS TO CHANGE HER WORLD…

Salryc Luxx has come a long way in just four years, from slave to conscript, to elite Black Blade assassin, rising rapidly as her extraordinary abilities are revealed. Promoted to lieutenant after capturing a valuable shipment of metals and laying waste to the invading force, she and Cyno, her partner (in war and love), have been entrusted with a dangerous mission: to assassinate the King of Anglia and the five nobles in line for the throne, leaving the path to ascension clear for their own leader.

That’s one side of the story. The other is that she and Cyno have been assigned this suicide mission as Parliament’s first pass at removing the iliri taint from the military. Either way, without the strength of allies, the Conglomerate of Free Citizens cannot turn back the invaders, whose goal is to wipe out the whole iliri species, so Sal and Cyno are the only hope of ending the continental war devastating their species. Traveling for months, they are so far away from their home base that they’re beyond the mental link that connects the pack. They remain committed to their mission—and to each other, but… unhappily disturbed. They can only hope their separation from the pack bring them closer together. But the danger is, in the absence of the pack, their bond will wither.

A kind deed, helping what they take to be a wounded animal, leads to the discovery of their true nature, to strengthening and re-energizing their pack, and to a surprising alliance that offers hope for the future. The wounded animal, they learn, is a graour wolf, a species of ferocious warriors with language and traits nearly identical to iliri. When two of them ask to join her pack, Sal recruits them as Black Blades and the iliri are no longer the only dog in the fight for iliri freedom.

But Anglia is nothing like the Conglomerate of Free Citizens. Anglians discriminate based on gender, not species. Iliri are thought to be just a myth--until Sal shows her face. To convince the king and his council that yes, a woman really can be a soldier, she's going to have to make her own rules. The enemy is moving. She doesn't have time to deal with outdated court manners.

As the defiance of an entire species rises up in her, she really has no choice—she’ll just have to change the world.

Women readers will thrill to the reverse harem idea that pushes the boundaries of epic fantasy in this second world series that may remind some of Avatar without the scary beasts; or even Game Of Thrones, but happier, with more color—and a dazzling female protagonist. Fans of Anne McCaffrey’s Dragonriders of Pern will find Sal’s planet Ogun a thrilling destination for their next fantasy fix.

Like all the books on this series, Defiance is a complete novel, not a cliffhanger. And because the illiri have insatiable and exotic sexual instincts, the smoking hot sex may make it unsuitable for humans under 18.

every time with the tears in this book ... there is so much love, and jeez how I love it when Sal gets riled up

"This is my army," Sal yelled loud enough for her soldiers to hear. "These are my men. This is my country! You know the histories as well as I do. We were here first, so you must not have heard me. Get your asses off my damned iliri soil. I will only say it one more time, and next, it will be to your Emperor as I stick my white iliri arm down his pathetic, divine throat. Is that clear enough for you to understand?"
Ayati, I love you when you're angry, Jase said in her head, and Sal laughed, glancing at him once more. Just wait, killer, because I'm about to get really pissed.
🖤🖤🖤

One of the best science fiction fantasy series. I‘m completely addicted to these books.

The setting has changed and Sal and Jase are on their mission ... alone ... yeah. They are growing on each other and finally Sal is finding words for her feelings. Just dreamy. I love love love Jase and he is so perfect for her. He is so supportive of her, she finally puts her insecurities aside and becomes a true Kaisae.

The third installment in the series is one of my favorite parts, even though I keep crying at the end even after reading it for the 10th time now. Emotionally exhausting in such an insanely beautiful way.

Spoilers ahead

After enjoying the Dark Orchid series by this author I'd purchased a few of her other books. This is the second book by her that didn't work for me

Fade to black sex scenes (I'm grossly offended at this lol)
Slow and boring plot
A fmc who's too focused on her hatred of her Iliri heritage/looks because of human prejudice
The first time she had sex with one of the guys was in disguise. I hated it. T was deceptive of her and made me question if he was really attracted to her as she really looks
Slowwwwwww AF
Each MC is as bland as unseasoned chicken- throw some spice on the thing will ya
I didn't like how the relationships started, with the LT having to tell her it's ok to sleep with another man. While he said he didn't expect fidelity it felt cheap to me. It's a personal thing but definitely not the way I like my RH set up
So far the h is involved with 2 men, one she's said ily to..... For reasons I've yet to comprehend

I had high hopes for this series because the fmc is supposed to be a badass but I'm not moving on to the next books

Did I spend most of the final 20 per cent of this book with tears in my eyes? Yes, I did, and I’m not mad about it.

Rise of the Iliri is one of my favourite series, and I'm doing a full reread after the author released updated and extended versions of all the books.

I'm so happy to be sucked back into this world with Sal and the Black Blades! Defiance is book three (out of 11) in the Rise of the Iliri series and is my favourite so far! This book starts with Jase and Sal on a CFC mission to install a new King of Anglia that is sympathetic to their cause. The pair of assassins work their way down a list until, eventually, they arrive at Dominik Jens - the new King and a standout character for the story.

It's easy to be apprehensive going into this book - with Jase and Sal disconnected from the Blades, we don't have the full cast of familiar faces to look forward to. HOWEVER... the new characters we meet are all welcomed additions to the story. There's a whole new species of people introduced in this book, as well as others who are clearly going to be an important part of the story. I really enjoy Ilija and Dom and their journeys in this book. There’s also a ton of action - we see Sal coming into her own, leading an entire army and kicking some serious ass.

The story and journey of Defiance are uplifting, and you can’t help but share the joy of Sal and the Blades in finding new friends and a country that accepts them. But in setting up for the next part, it also feels tragic - they're leaving Anglia returning to the oppression and discrimination of the CFC so queue the tears from me.

OG REVIEW
This book is the best of the series so far! I loved it!!! The journey of Sal and Jace through Anglia was everything I wanted and more. Can't wait for the next book. It's been a while since I've felt so invested in a story.

Still Addicted

So far, this is my favorite book of the series. I love all of the new people Sal and Cyno met in Anglia. The grauori are awesome, too. I love how things worked out in the end, but I can't believe Sal is getting court-martialed for all that she pulled off. the CFC needs a kick in the ass.

By now I’m obsessed with the series.
I’m sucked in. I can’t put down this book. I think about it, breathe it and feel withdrawal when I can’t read the book. I want to know how the characters are doing, what’s going to happen next. This series is awesome.

It’s an awesome fantasy and I’m happy to keep reading it. This one, there’s so much that goes on in these books, had so many things going on. Another new species, a war, and love, and friendship and it’s just awesome.

The whole thing. This one is about her year of service to get the new king on the throne and then keeping him on the throne and working up his army. The whole story is well written and interwoven.

This is definitely going on my recommend to everyone series list.

Fantastic adventure stars this book, and it keeps on coming all through the book. Once again, Sal performs amazing things that surprise herself as much as anyone. She is a mix of confidence and bravado, learning as she goes about herself and her mates. Her mates are equally interesting. The awful part is that they are all slaves, with talents that add to the pack. This story gathers a whole country of new characters, but the author makes it easy to keep track of everyone. Loved it.

Keeps getting better

This series gets better with every book. There are layers upon layers to this story but it never bogs down or gets confusing. There were a lot of new characters brought in but each character is so powerfully written that there is no way to forget them or confuse them. Sal is so strong but it has always been her pack that helps keep her going and that pack is not only growing but strengthening as well. This is epic fantasy at it's best.

"Damn, Sal, you're getting pretty good."

This brilliant series just gets better and better.

The world is fascinating. The cast of characters continues to grow and develop. Eight more books to go. So excited.

One minor point: yet again the product description here on Amazon makes reference to "smoking hot sex" which simply isn't there. Love, sore, both romantic and between comrades, but there's nothing here unsuitable for teen readers.

Very highly recommended.

In love....

Each time I expect to get bored by the next book in this series, but I only become more enthralled. I loved this book more than the last. I cried, laughed, and dreamed with all the characters. If you don’t read this series you will never understand what you are missing!

I’m really getting invested in this series and starting to appreciate how much world building and character development has occurred throughout the first 3 books so far!!
11 books is alot but I’m kinda dying to find out who becomes part of the harem because right now it’s only Jase and Blaec but I can sense that others may be joining soon… I would actually love if Arctic became one of her mates and then maybe we meet someone new throughout the next few books that could be a potential??
I still think Zep could be a potential, and the way he calls her babe makes my heart literally melt, especially since he smells good to her and she’s definitely his type; it’s the little sister and big brother thing that halts it in its tracks but I could see something simmering there and building up over time!
This slow burn / slow-build is simultaneously killing me but also giving me life because I really enjoy being tortured like this.
The plot is the main focus on the series but it’s definitely a good one; the war and all the battles is getting a bit redundant, mostly because it’s very descriptive and sometimes I find it hard to follow what is going on.
Otherwise I love Sal as a Kaisae, she is so badass, especially in this book when she commands the whole Anglian army.
She’s starting to come into her own and appreciate her abilities and natural instincts as an Iliri.

Her bonds with each of the men, mates or not, is very special.
I remember this bothering me a first when I picked up this series a couple years ago but now I cherish it.
Her “brotherhood” with the Blades is unmatched and adds a really wholesome element to the story.
I do enjoy how not every man we meet is expected to be part of her harem, in fact, most will not ever be anything but a friend or “brother” to her; especially given her particular tastes.
I love the way she is so confident in herself now and basically considers herself one of the boys but fully knowing the effect she has on them all, even the human ones.
It’s getting really fun to see the different types of interactions she has with each person she meets and I love that she is getting the respect she deserves, most especially from her Blades and the Anglians.
I really want to see them get a happy ever after where they can live in Anglia in peace and just enjoy they’re lives and get old and wrinkled together.
That will be a long time coming I’m sure, but I know these books are just going to get better as we get further along and I can’t wait to see where they all end up!

~4 stars~

Defiance is the third book in the Rise of The Iliri series by Auryn Hadley.

My expectations for this book were muddled and particularly all over the place. Mostly with suspense and anxiety warring inside me over how poorly Sal and Jase would be treated in a new new country all alone. Given everything we’ve witnessed through the eyes of the experiences with the Conglomerate I could not bring myself to expect anything remotely positive for their futures.

Alas, they found a home. More than that they found their roots, and a country that was proud to follow a Kaisei. Their interactions with the Anglian people breathed fresh hope into me and the characters I have become so enamored with in this series.

Meeting soldiers outside of the Black Blades that could actually be trusted, that were genuinely good men was yet another surprise. I came to enjoy them individually, and the shift as a whole in perspective for how the humans they now faced would treat them.

Then there’s Dominick Jens, the new King, the man that their mission put on the throne. I have come to more than enjoy his company in these pages, but have a special place for this character in my heart. He was such a surprise and delight, especially in a nobility role. I fear for how his relationship will shift in the next book, when their involvement in his ascension comes to light. If he will have forgiveness or vilification to offer.

And last, but surely not least, the graouri. Especially Roo and Hwa’s pivotal roles in shaping how they came across. Becoming the eleventh and twelfth member of the Blades pack, and siring the two newest members made them even more adorable in my eyes. I’m becoming addicted to the future that Sal is shaping with her pack, for the Iliri, against all odds. I only wish for the best for them. Maybe the chance to grow old and retire would be enough.

Rise of the Iliri is quickly becoming one of my favourite sci-fi/epic fantasy sagas. Complex and incredibly well developed characters in an intricately described world. Love the action and politics seamlessly blended with steam and romance. This story is incredible

I had planned to be really disciplined about this re-read, making sure I paused to read a book in between each and write a thorough review, but it's getting more and more difficult to put down the books! This is the fourth time I've read Defiance this year, and even though I know what happens, the writing and the story line just suck me in so it's really hard to hit the pause button!

Defiance finds Sal assigned on a covert operation to Anglia. Along with her partner Jase, the two iliri are tasked with a complicated mission designed to fail—but Sal being Sal, she not only meets all the requirements but exceeds them, and forms deep relationships with the leadership of Anglia along the way.

Another solid edition in the Rise of the Iliri series - I am really, really enjoying this series even though it is different from what I normally read. I am always highly moved by family dynamics - be they blood relations or the family we make on our own - and in this third book in the series I teared up some at multiple places because of the beautiful family moments.

There are multiple characters I would love to see Sal add to her harem but I can't tell which ones the author will add down the line. As with the second book I would like to see more expanded love scenes but that's a personal wish - the book is very good without it. I only marked 8 things I thought were editing errors - so if there were more than that the story engrossed me well enough to hide them. Looking forward to seeing what happens next!

This one is probably my favorite of the series.

Not having LT being a little butch every 10 seconds really helped me get into the story more. It bothers me when conversation is happening and then secondary conversations happen around the conversation but there is no movement to indicate that they’re talking to someone else. That doesn’t make much sense but short of like highlighting a paragraph, I can’t really explain it more.

I'm more captivated by the battle scenes, the team relationships and friendships being built, and the over-all plot than I am of the romance. I have to say that I do not like the love or "softer" scenes between Sal/Blaec/Jase. I sometimes even skim through them bec I hate the waffling and I feel like all of them are all getting short-changed somehow. So even if they all say that it's okay between them, it just feels/reads like it's not gonna be okay.

Please note that this review is for the SERIES, not the individual book.

Ok. I don't know where to begin. I want to say ALL the things because this series is all kinds of amazing. There is a not zero chance that my excitement may get away with me, so please excuse any seemingly random bits of rambling.

First off, this is an 11 book completed series that absolutely MUST be read in order as a series. You won't make heads nor tails of it if you try to pick and choose. This series is a little similar to the Five Fangs series by Mary Ann Weir. While there is a main character and her harem, this one also has a lot of communal storylines and relationships. It's one of the few 3rd person PoV that I have truly enjoyed, as it gives a better perspective on the entire experience. And this IS an experience.

A.H. Hadley is a master wordsmith. I've read most of her bibliography and enjoyed all of it. I was a bit skeptical about this series as 11 books are a heckuva commitment. I've been it recommended everywhere though, so I finally decided to give it a shot, and I wish I could personally thank every person who suggested it.

Her world building is a skill that most authors could learn from. From the rich history of the land and people to the customs and motives of the people, I was constantly taking information in and assimilating it from one book to the next. The true talent, though, is the fact that I never once felt overwhelmed by it.

The foundation is beautifully laid for the complex web of plotlines that permeates this story. There are plots within plots and plans without plans. Rise of the Iliri is a masterwork of the uncertain. I THOUGHT I knew what I was getting into. At numerous times while reading, I THOUGHT I knew what to expect. I was unprepared, and I loved every moment.

I do disagree with many of my fellow readers, however. This series was recommended as a reverse harem romance, but I'm just not sold on that. Yes, romance plays a part in the story arc. Yes, there are multiple men in a relationship with one woman. So, I guess that technically, they are correct. But it is so much more. The author labels it as "a complete epic science-fantasy story." I personally think it's more of a space opera. There is romance, but also anger and hatred, good verses evil, overcoming adversity, and amazing action sequences, plus plenty more that I can't find the words for. (But for the smut hounds, there are ample shenanigans which are relatively detailed and beautifully written)

The characters are never two dimensional. They start out fully fleshed out, but as the story progresses, they change. Traits become deeper. Thoughts become richer. They grow - as individuals as well as the groups. Especially Sal, the female main character. She has an entire evolution/metamorphosis arc that is without compare. I have never read anything quite like it.

If I could, I would rate this series as an 8 out of 5 stars. It exceeded my expectations in every way. Yes, it is a time commitment, but in all honesty, I didn't realize it. I started reading in book 1 and it consumed my attention until I closed book 11.

Please stop reading here if spoilers in the form of content warnings are a deal breaker for you. This series has some heavy s#!t in it that I wasn't really prepared for, so I'm going to let you in on it. Mental health matters.

Expect graphic vi0|ence, gore, a metric crap ton of unaliving, grief & loss, past SA for several characters, extreme prejudice & discrimination as well as humiliation and degradation (and not the kinky fun kind.) The FMC was conscripted into the military from her owner's home. Slavery is all through this story, so be prepared. And this is the one that kinda frakked me up - one of the MCs dies. Usually, I pass on books where that is in the content warning, however, in this instance, it becomes a jumping off point for the continuing progression of the story. I would encourage you to not let that particular TW prevent you from an otherwise truly remarkable reading experience.

I thought this series would be a quick read... I was so wrong. There is so much detail, so many characters and places to pay attention to, new words to remember, signals and call signs to give attention to. Battles and training are described and referred to at later times. Relationships and alliances are described, detailed, etc. then put into the background to be remembered and used later. This series is a work of art in the way that Hadley sets everything up to have a purpose. An alliance formed in book one doesn’t make sense until book five, a favor owed and a life saved in book two doesn’t come back up until book four. So much care and thought went into the planning of these books, that much is clear.
Warning: They are long. But totally worth the read.
Book 3: Defiance
As the storyline develops, it is becoming increasingly important to give attention to the body movements/physical expressions of the characters. The Iliri are very expressive in the ways that they move, from their ears (Sal) to their stance and how they hold themselves. It is a-whole-nother factor that gives this story a different feel than other books. Not only do we pay attention to what characters say, but what their body tells us as they say it. At this point in the series, I am starting to pick up on what it means when a character’s ears flip back, when his fists clench, when the left lip lifts into a snarl over the right lip, and what it means to stand at someone’s left side. It’s awesome, and I commend Hadley for this extra layer.
This third book focuses on Sal and Jase in a different country as they carry out orders given to them by Blaze and Ran. Naturally, it also follows the growth in their relationship, but also Sal’s growth as an Iliri and Jase’s growth into an Iliri that is a little less feral. It also begins (what seems to be an arduous journey) Sal’s emergence as Kaisae. She really comes into her own in this book.
We also see more about the Iliri and their culture and make up. There is more history, how crossbreeds and pures like Sal come to be, and where the Ilirians came from to begin with. We are introduced to this origin species that I just adore, which sets a whole new layer to the pack structure as well as a new group of characters into the mix (I don’t want to ruin it by giving the name of the group). The Anglian characters are an amazing addition. As Sal and Jase find their place in this new country, new characters are introduced and developed. These people become crucial to the story line. The issue is that there are so many new people that it is a little hard to keep track. Still, I love the way that Sal interacts and seems to genuinely love and enjoy the new friends, allies, and colleagues that she brings into her pack. Also... there are babies!!! (Not like what you think but there are babies and its awesome).
The details and time that goes into the battles. If this is something you are interested in, the play by play of how so many battles play out, then you will really enjoy this series. As an elite fighting force, the Blades are a part of so many battles!
Again, pay attention to favors, to seemingly small actions, to interactions... it is constantly the case with this series that these things that seem so minuscule have HUGE affects on the storyline, not in an annoying way, but in an AH HA! way.

My ongoing review for this entire series as I read is at kyyzillathebookdevourer.blogspot.com

*NOTE: this review is for the entire series NOT just this book. Minor spoilers ahead*

I'm finally reviewing one of my all-time favourite reverse harem series!!

Rise of The Iliri follows our FMC Sal, the last of the pale-skinned Iliri race, as she collects mates, kicks butt and changes nations.

This series is spectacular, I have yet to find a series that matches this one in world-building, depth of character, and plot twists. I love each of Sal's mates, they all felt individual to me (despite there being a lot of them), and I enjoyed not only their relationship with Sal but how they interacted with the other characters. I couldn't even pick a favourite, they all offer such different things to Sal. I loved that each of their relationships felt different and yet the author was able to pull them in together towards the end of the series into one network. I will warn however there are 'favourites' within the harem, so if this is something that bothers you keep that in mind! I didn't feel that this necessarily detracted from the other members of the harem however.

The storyline kept me pulled in throughout the series despite being so long, with plenty of violence and suspense juxtaposed with loving moments and relationship building. I won't spoil the plot but let me say that Sal finds her power with the help of her mates and other allies throughout the series! I loved her growth throughout the series and I felt that the ending was fitting. Be warned though, it was not an easy journey for the characters and there is a good chance the events of this series will leave you in tears! The ending is worth it though, and there is even an extended epilogue (book 11) to round out the series and give us a taste of what was like for Sal and family following the events of the previous books.

All in all, there is a special place in my heart for this series and I've yet to find one that truly measures up to the experience of reading Sal's story. If you're looking for a series that explores modern themes in a high fantasy world with plenty of why-choose love and violence, this series is for you!

As always, check your trigger warnings because this series gets intense!

Burn: slow-medium (builds throughout series)

Spice: 5/5 (in later books)

Harem size: large (builds throughout series)

I love how well and precise the titles are at summing up the content of the book.
“The defiance of an entire species flooded through her”

This one was something else. The previous two books were good, but this one was on a whole different level. Sal has finally shown everyone what it truly means to be Iliri and she kicked ass. And I like that it's not only the MC that grows and evolves, but other characters as well. I thought Cyno was perfect before, but now? Yeah, there is no one like him. Blaec I still don't know about. I definitely liked him more in this book and his actions kind of redeemed him, but also when did all the change happened, you know? Like, he had one personality in the previous books and now he just has a different one. When did that happen? Plus, I kind of miss his dominance, I want him to be a little more and I want there to just be more of him.
Oh and, when will we get the next guy? Taunor? We already know the name for it, so it shouldn't take long. Who's it gonna be? Can't wait.
The addition of characters was interesting, if nothing else. The mutts are intriguing and I wonder how long it took to breed Iliri out of that.
Now Dominic? “I have no idea.  I mean, he loved his whores, but besides that, I don't know.” I swear, every time we enter his rooms, there's a whore there. And, not that I have anything against it, but he is a King and I want to see him being portrayed as something more that a joke.

Overall, with every new book you can see more and more improvements and I love it. I like how they always spell things out as though to explain it to the characters, but kind of to the readers as well. And I like the fact that I'm never bored with this books.
But also, this is the third book and we still don't really know a lot about the character. Shift and Razor? All I know about them are their names and abilities. I want more. Hope I'll get more in the fourth book.

Another great book in this amazing series! This book may be long but it's action-packed, has some comedy and true brotherhood.

What I liked in this book is that this story is so incredible and engaging. It's great, the world-building is phenomenal. The characters are great, this book was different from the first two. We had new characters introduced and less of the Black Blades. Which made me sad, but I like the new additions to the book. I can't wait to see what this new alliance will bring.

What I didn't like is well, I don't like relationship between Sal and LT. I'm a fan of RH so I'm completely okay with Sal having both men. But I feel like she has a favorite which is Jase (Cyno). I also understand different types of "love." I think that Sal needs to work on her relationship with LT because honestly, I don't feel like she actually loves him. I think she loves him because he loves her. Her words and actions often contradict each other. She can't live without Jase, she's said this. But for me, I think LT could die and she'd be fine with it. She'd mourn him but then replace him, from my perspective, LT is replaceable. If someone is replaceable, do you really love them? I wouldn't care, if they weren't together. I don't know if it's just me but I feel like at times, he could do better or that they shouldn't be together. He's more like a companion than someone she loves. Which sucks because I am a fan of LT. This book was just hard because I don't think she treats LT like someone she cares about. Jase is more of her priority than LT. Poor LT.

I also don't know if this is just because of KU, but I found a lot of mistakes. Grammar was worst than usual, enough for me to 1. Notice and 2. Start to get irritated. But also, names were the wrong names when referring to people. It confused me multiple times.

I still like this series, enough for me to want to continue.

Jase and Sal Steal the Show

*****Spoilers*****

In this one there's a lot of Sal and Jase as they work on completing the mission assigned to them. They get the job done in Anglia but also earned the respect of the king they put in place, Dominick Jens, human bastard born who never expected to inherit the throne. The attitudes in Anglia are more male dominant than racist against iliri and Sal and Jase find a true home that would welcome them. In addition, they find the grauor, their iliri ancestors, closer to beasts but with features closer to pure iliri, walking on four legs and can stand on two, with the ability to speak. Intelligent and vicious fighters, once they join with Sal and the Anglian army, the Terran one doesn't stand a chance. 6,000 troops decimated with 228 losses in comparison. With the respect and honor Sal earned in Anglia, it's sure to be jarring once she returns to the conglomerate army where iliri get little respect. One of the grauor couples who joined Sal's pack had twin girl grauor pups and they're advanced.

I'm looking forward to knowing what the Viraenova are and see if Sal's able to get them into the alliance against the Terrans. From hints in the book, it seems like they're close to iliri at the least. One thing I've been wondering book after book is why the author never gets detailed about the intimate moments shared between Sal and Blaec. It's always a fade and I'm not sure if that's a precursor to his eventual demise but we'll see. Sal and Jase get closer and she promotes him to first mate. Sal can fully connect to Jase in a way she isn't able to do with Blaec who keeps his mind closed to her when they have sex. I'm sure there's a reason but I can't figure it out, perhaps because of his visions but I'm not sure. In any case, I find myself not really liking how close Sal and Jase got, nothing too much against him but I'd prefer Arctic. Sighs, it's not to be given how this one went.
