A wonderful, cerebral biography befitting a wonderful, cerebral pope. This book explains not only St. Pius X's life in great detail, but it also explains his impact on Catholic social and institutional dogma during the tumultuous period of the late 19th century and early 20th century. He died as he lived: saintly and in constant service to the poor, hating no one and beloved by all. The translation flows nicely, including parts that are doubtless difficult to translate, such as papal encyclicals. All these collaborating sources add up to a perfect historical biography.
