Wolf's Bane: Happily Ever After

Rate this book
What secrets lie beneath the hood?

Villains aren't bad people; they are just victims of circumstances. Granted, they are usually the ones to create that circumstance, but that is not the point.

Lucius was living the good life. Spending time with his mate as she pranced around in her sexy red hood. Mmmm, he couldn't wait to get a bite of that luscious little cupcake. Nothing was better than tasting her cream filling.

Then his mate betrayed him.

Next, a dead body turned up, and all fingers were pointing at Lucius for making it that way.

A shiny example of life sticking it to him once again. Waking up in jail, accused of killing his biggest rival, Lucius thought his day couldn't get much worse until help was offered from his most hated enemy. Before he knew it, he was accepting help from a witch, the last creature on the planet that he trusted. His whole situation just screams shady.

Second chances are a thing of Fairy Tales. Two things Lucius doesn’t believe in, Second Chances and Happily Ever Afters. Now he is being offered both.

And all he has to do was avoid screwing up his second chance, and find a murderer all while convincing his mate to fall in love with him again and not keeping his date with the Woodman’s ax.

This is an interracial, paranormal romance with drama and lots of confusion.

This book needs serious editing as it is full of errors of all types: grammatical errors, missing endings of words, unnecessary endings, wrong word usage, missing verbs, incorrect verb usage, incomplete sentences, missing words, etc. There are many errors but they are easily corrected by a good editor. As this is an Arc, perhaps they'll be corrected in the final version.

Not so easily corrected is the confused storyline and characters: alpha wolves with unknown power, witches of darkness and witches of light, Fairy Godfather and Godmother, something called the Entity and a Host, etc. Lucius was the alpha wolf and hero and Ruby was heroine but we didn't know what she was. Lucius didn't know what Ruby was except she was his mate. Ruby didn't believe there was a mate for her because she was different and could only mate with her own kind of which there were none. Ruby's cousin, Scarlotta was crazy and power hungry and had something going on with the Entity which was dark and evil. Ruby's grandmother, Cherise Ryderhood (Granny Ryderhood) was a witch of the Light. She was trying to find a cure for the darkness in Scarlotta.

How was Scarlotta Granny Ryderhood's granddaughter and what was she? What was Ruby and why didn't she know what she was and how powerful she could be? Why did Lucius, who had the power of the Alpha wolf, keep getting caught and chained with a good chain that drained him of his power? Why did Granny Ryderhood keep getting trapped by Scarlotta"a spells? Who was the Entity and who was the Host? Who? How? Why? What? The storyline was confusing and some things were never made clear.

There was good backstory on Lucius but little was known on the other characters. The sex between Lucius and Ruby was supposed to be erotic but it added nothing to their story. there was too much profanity when speaking of sexual body parts. Taking the Lord's name in vain even one time is too much and it happened fairly often in this book. How could lucius and Ruby not be mated as often as they had sex? There needed to be more backstory on Ruby.

The first 25% of the book was a mess of confusion. The next 50% was more interesting but still confusing. The ending was rushed and most still made no sense. This could have been a much better book with a little more clarity in backstory and history of the different paranormals in the book.

I received this book as an Arc for an honest review. You have an honest review, maybe a confusing one, but an honest one. Yes, Lucius and Ruby had a HEA - just don't ask me how!

Ummmm...

I read this because it was free & I was considering buying a book from this author. I enjoy fantasy romances from time to time. Ruby was every trope I'm tired of from black women characters. Ruby was a walking contradiction. The author couldn't stick to any character traits, Ruby changed based on the need of the story. One minute she's almost painfully shy & deeply insecure ( the obsession bw authors especially in the interracial romance genre have with making bw leads unattractive while everyone else around them is gorgeous) next minute she flirting & being sexually aggressive. She is jealous of mates & sad she won't have one but then a fine man calls her his mate & shows & tells her he loves her & she can feel a connection but constantly rejects him. Knew her cousin couldn't be trusted but did nothing to protect herself & acted surprise whenever she did something devious. It's the lack of original ideas & silly tropes for me. I won't be buying any books by this author because writing bw like this is a plague in this genre, it usually means she writes all her bw characters like this. Disappointing.

White Lighter

So red riding hood family are witches both light and dark, and there are Alpha wolf evil witch hunters. Got it. Now in the town of HEA we have a wolf from before the French Revolution who lives in HEA being given a second chance by the eternity witch Celeste to change his past and correct a crime. The story works with all it's twist and turns. And the love story pulls it all together. A HEA in the town of HEA. Cute, humorous murder eternity witch rewrote story.

A different spin on a fairy tale. It was great and with plenty of action, intrigue and love scenes. The only part that I didn't feel was explained properly was that the cousin really wasn't a Ryderwood witch.

Love conquers all!

Lucius Trent, an alpha wolf shifter, was the only surviving member of his clan. His wolf recognised his mate when he saw her. But she was the same person he thought betrayed him. His wolf knew better. Lucius was being framed for the death of Granny Ryderhood and was gifted by the eternal witch, Celeste DuBois, with a do over to find out who and why. There were so many hidden family secrets on the Ryderhood side of the family that had to be untangled to fight the entity that wanted out. Scarlotta, one of Granny Ryderhood's granddaughters, was inhabited by the entity. Scarlotta was a Ryderhood witch, just like her granny, Cherie Ryderhood. But Scarlotta wanted more power. She wanted the power that her grandmother inhabited so she could be the more powerful witch of all. She allowed the entity to take over her body for that reason to her unknown detrament.

Scarlotta's cousin Ruby, was not a witch but she inherited the powers of putting together mates and hearing their wolf. She was always told that she could only mate with someone of her own kind and there was none left, so she resigned herself to a fate of a lonely life. So when Lucius kept insisting that she was his mate, she adamantly resisted until she could not resist the draw. It was not until she relented to being his mate and declared her love that they were able to solve all of their problems by unlocking the Ryderhood family secrets as it related to Trent's clan, to defeat the entity.

Donna wrote a very imaginative creative interpretation of the childhood fairytale of Little Red Riding hood. I really enjoyed this quaint tale told in a modern twist.

Loved it

Lucius was a witch hunter who was given a second chance to get it right (by Celeste). He owned a bakery that made wonderful cupcakes. Ruby his mate (at the time didn’t believe she was his mate) even though she loved being with him. Lucius along with Ruby had to come up with a plan to stop Ruby’s evil cousin from destroying Ruby and framing Lucius for the impending death of the grandmother. I loved reading this book, had to skip over the sex scenes, but nevertheless loved reading it.

After reading Beau Ty I knew I had to continue reading the Happily Ever After series. Lucius believes he has been set up by his mate and betrayed. After he is given a second chance to go back in time by a witch and given a do-over the reader will find themselves in an adult version of a reimagined Red Ridinghood story full of mystery, magic, shifters, and secrets. Ms. Mercer has a gem with this series.

I received this as an ARC and voluntarily give my review.
