"I'm not good at this, Jack," she said softly. "I cant bring myself to belong to anybody." "Sweetheart it's too late," Jack said with a trace of bitterness. He did not like feeling this way, that another person had this much power over him, but he was tired of fighting it. It was only fair that she share this unsettling feeling with him. "You're mine. And I take care of what's mine."

Fire and Ice is the first book in the Guardian's series by Victoria Paige. This is the second book I've read by this author, and it's becoming quite apparent that I'm going to stick with this author. She writes about strong alpha males, who fall in love with equally strong heroines. I've come to realise that the story is way more enjoyable when the heroine stands up to the hero and fights to get her own way. It makes reading about the frustration of the hero that much more enjoyable, don't get me wrong Jack is confident, arrogant, controlling and possessive, just the way I like them. But Maia makes him work for it and she's not about to give up her job just because he says so.

"Look you're not the boss of me. If I want to leave, I will. You get me? Maia retorted forcefully. Derek really didn't want to be around for this conversation.
Irresistible force meet immovable object.
"You can try to leave." Jack's voice was dangerously soft.
"You think you can restrain me? Tranq me again?
"If I have to."

Maia Pierce, is a guardian, she's tough as nails will go the extra mile to get a mission completed successfully. She takes dangerous chances, almost as if she doesn't care whether she lives or dies. She's trained in hand to hand combat, she's an excellent shot. She's basically a kickass heroine!

Jack McCord, is the successful owner of a defense company, he's an ex-Navy SEAL, he's playboy, he doesn't do relationships just arrangements with woman who understand his demands. When they start getting too clingy, he gets rid of them and moves on to the next one. Until he meets Maia, from the moment he sees her he knows he has to have her. He just needs to get her out of his system and then he'll move on, but it becomes quite obvious that a few nights with her aren't going to cut it. Jack doesn't like this feeling but he dislikes being without her even more.

"What I'm feeling right now,'love' is too tame a word. It's almost an obsession. I wouldn't be satisfied with anything less than outright possession. And it's unsettling."

The is story is action packed, the dialogue witty the characters are intense and lovable. The sex is hot, although I will add that this story centers more around plot but I loved that part! All in all, an enjoyable read, highly recommended!

This book started off strong. I loved kick-ass Maia. Yes, she was shot, it’s just a scratch. Happens everyday and twice on Tuesdays. Shrug. There was great action with a fast pace in the beginning. I started to picture her as a female Bruce Willis – Yipee Ky A…. as she maneuvered herself out of several impossible situations.

The romance kind of got in the way for me….I can’t believe I just said that.

It slowed the pace and pulled the focus off of the strategy to stop the bad guys. I started to get frustrated that for such smart characters with their military operation backgrounds Maia and Jack weren’t smart or strategic.

I had to remind myself that I wasn’t reading a military suspense thriller, I was reading a romance novel. However, I was a little frustrated by the romance too. I wanted Jack to admire and respect Maia’s abilities and courage. I wanted him to enjoy working with her and think that she is the best person in the world to have his back. Instead he just wanted to protect her and stop her from doing her job and risking her life. I wanted him to get in a tight spot and have her to channel Bruce Willis again and Yippee Ky A his butt to safety but he rescues her instead. *sigh*

I finished the book disappointed and thinking that there were two other characters in the book that would have suited her better. Maybe there will be a sequel where she tosses Jack out and heads to Russia to hook up with Erik.

UGHHH I wanted to love this book so much. I found it from TikTok one of those where they give you a line from the book and the whole reason I read it was for the groveling….

He walked swiftly into the bedroom and
noticed that everything looked tidy-
too tidy. The bed was made, the sheets
changed, the night tables and dressers
wiped down. The floor was vacuumed
and polished. The scent of lemon and
bleach assailed his nostrils as he entered
the adjoining bathroom. Every single tile
gleamed, all his personal essentials were
there but not a single item of hers re-
mained.
Maia's words echoed in his head.'
"You will not find a trace of me anywhere..."
Jack walked into the huge closet. Maia's
clothes, shoes and bags were gone. He
moved to the dresser and started open-
ing the drawers, a strange panic start-
ing to well up inside him. Gone. Every.
thing that belonged to her was gone, even
her scent, that special perfume that was
all Maia... Jack inhaled……. nothing.

Like after kicking her out after she repeatedly told him about her job and how her last boyfriend freak out he kicks her out (coldly I might add) and after he saves her there is absolutely no groveling….. and he has the audacity to be like things are going to change because I can’t live without you but also I’m not ok with your job so quite or your going to have to tell me everything about every job you take even though that’s technically classified information… and she agrees…..

So I DNF’d it at 97%….. I don’t want to read about their happily ever after… don’t get me wrong I wanted them together and I could have dealt with her taking a step back from her job and I even love reading about alphaholes…. But seriously it’s feels like he just ignores every word that comes out of her mouth and demands her to do what he wants… it gave me 50 shades of grey vibes where he manipulates her and excepts her to listen what he has to say and she always has to compromise even though she was always upfront about her lifestyle. I mean the dude bluntly said he wanted to keep her away from the guy who saved her as a kid and that she trust implicitly… like he is family to her but jake is jealous and can’t stand the she leans on him.

unbelievable could not be written by a woman

There is no way this book was written by a woman.
The character descriptions are ridiculous and not a way a woman would describe herself. This bad ass woman just looses all of her back bone to a temperamental child of a man who constantly freaks out the whole damn book. Says he loves her then kicks her out and she just takes him back?? The whole thing made me uncomfortable and angry to read. I wanted to punch them both in the face the whole book

Solid 4.5 Stars

What I loved the most about this story, is that I REALLY fell in love, or EXTREME like with just about every character here. With the exception of the Villains, of course. Everyone had layers to them. Relatable but also likable layers. This one, I feel, is a solid intro to a series. The plot, the intensity here & all the twists & turns makes this one a riveting read. The chemistry with all the characters not just the MC's, is tangible. I love that.

While our hero Jack & our heroine Maia will have you salivating with love, lust, passion, and heart skipping moments, I must say that I fell really hard for Jack's competition, Lee *swoons* I REALLY want one of him. So though I LOVE our hero here, and I feel he & Maia are great together,(They really burned up these pages. Individually & collectively) but I'm sorry Jack, but Lee just has me like that. I WANT LEE!

Maia is just a kick a** heroine all around. I love her. Even when she was clearly being hard headed & not always making the wisest choices. You got her & her motivation. What makes her tick.

Same with Jack just an awesome blend of an Alpha Male who loves hard. I loved watching his layers being peeled back as well.

So many things are on point here, but if I point them out, you will have spoilers.

But there was a moment/turn of events at the 91% mark, that truly ticked me off where Jack & Maia are concerned. I would have rather seen this "Fallout" go another way or come about a different way/reason. So this is why this one could not be a solid 5 stars for me. Though their ending, certainly did appease me a bit ;)

But I definitely would recommend this read. It has everything you would want to see in a novel if you truly are looking to be more than enticed, but truly entertained.

This will certainly be a series I will continue to follow.

The hero was incredibly unlikeable in the way every arrogant man is secure in the knowledge that he can get away with whatever because he's a man. He's been emotionally unavailable since his fiancee and sister died but boinks everything in the vicinity including his dead sister's best friend. He pats himself on the back that he's so honest with them about his lack of intentions.

Okay. Enter the heroine, she's another scary Russian chick, licensed to kill and runs circles around the hero. She reminds me of Goodie in Goodnight without the cool dog.

The H is up for his usual affair with no strings but gets peeved and pouts when she says that works best for her too. The misogyny and hypocrisy are strong with this one.

Most of the book is Maia kicking ass so as much a thriller as a romance with intermittent sex scenes and some bouts of pouting by the H.

Heroine should just get a dog like Salem. Better yet, read Goodnight as the hero is much better.

This is a difficult review to give. I liked the writing, and I adored Maia, she is a fascinating, amazing h, one of the best I have read in a long time. The truth is this book would have been a full star rating for me but for one thing. Double standards.
I'm not a die hard feminist, I don't believe men and woman are the same, but I do believe they are equal, and while I love a hot Alpha-take-charge-throw-her-over-his-shoulder H, there has to be respect despite the chest beating.
I agree with the reviewers that were disappointed that Jack never acknowledged or even noticed just how good at her job she was. And sadly if she had been a man then instead of being reckless and self destructive, she would have been brave and heroic, and there would never have even been even a thought of her giving up her missions and becoming a teacher. But there was, there is and in the end I was saddened and disappointed.
Jack went through a moment of change, a moment where I thought.... YES!!! he's getting it, but somehow it all backslid and he became even more of a moron than before.

So three stars it is, for an amazing female hero that deserved better. Perhaps Ms Paige will write another book about Maia where she finally dumps Jack and hooks up with a man who can love her just as she is.

In the first Lara Croft movie with Angelina Jolie’s and Daniel Craig, one of the villains says :” your ignorance amuses me”. My best friend at the time and I found this phrase so funny, needless to say, we were quite obnoxious and silly using it on unsuspecting strangers or acquaintances who annoyed us. We didn’t have the slightest idea about how annoying we were being in turn.

All of which summarise my feelings about this awfully written, stupid, silly book, with idiotic protagonists who were BOTH too stupid and too annoying to live. I am not going to get into the horrific grammar and editing. This person has no idea how to develop characters!

I read on just because I could not believe how awful the book was it was like one of those ghastly third rate 80’s police dramas. Except that those were actually more fun to watch. So my question is how is it even remotely possible for this book to have so many high ratings? Is it me or is it the book?!?!

I was only 2% in and there were so many names being thrown around I had no idea how to keep track of them. I thought this story might of been a sequel and that was why so many names were mentioned but this is the first book. I can't believe the author would make such a mistake. I was also turned off by the h, who is a take charge, super sexy, and strong bodyguard. I knew i was not going to like the story as soon as the h was introduced. She arrives at the building and immediately becomes catty when she sees the beautiful receptionist. I use to have a rule about sticking with a book at least to 50% before making a decision about stopping. But I have so many books on my TBR list so why should I suffer through a book I don't enjoy when I could be reading something I like. So no thanks, I'll pass on this one.

In light of the rave reviews, this was a very disappointing read. The writing is juvenile. Don't just tell me all the background stories and then tell me how everyone is feeling. let me discover it. And really, kidnapping? how ridiculous is that? The threat of the "Russians" is so vague and poorly explained, even though she tries to explain it all by just telling it in a choppy manner, that I don't feel that the h is threatened. She calls in for backup, but then 10 minutes later, she is alone in the warehouse with dead tangos all around her and she is on the phone with such poor situational awareness that her team is able to sneak up on her. The action sequences are explained and described in an almost clinical manner with no sense of urgency or presence. The attraction makes no sense. The h is supposedly so kick-ass, but she is about to allow herself to be sexually assaulted so that she "doesn't blow her cover." really?
And in a flashback about her relationship with Lee, after he essentially rapes her, it reads:
"Maia closed her eyes and let Lee take her, she felt his pain as he wrapped his arms around her to grip her closer, she tentatively stroked his back. .... "He may not want to see me," Maia told ViKtor. It was a possibility. After all, she had left without saying goodbye personally." Really? He rapes you, you leave, and you feel bad because you didn't say goodbye in person? and you are considering renewing the relationship so you can be bait for the Russian mob? what is wrong with this picture?!
This is like a train wreck. I don't think I will stay around for the big finish.

3.5-4.0 stars. Jack/H is a true alpha - handsomely hot, bossy, crazy jealous and extremely possessive. He's an ex-navy seal and runs a group that specializes in weapons. Pair him with Maia/h a beautiful (natch) strong, independent, kickass, operative for the Guardians, an undercover group, and you have an explosion of strong wills and sexual heat. LOL! Alpha Jack desperately tries to cope with Maia's independence and her dangerous job which leads to a lot of jaw cracking, fist clenching and growling frustration at wanting to keep her safe from harm. With an ABC of agencies, operatives, guns, and bad guys looks to be an interesting series. Jack/Maia did get a nice but too sudden HEA (happily ever after). Looking forward to bk 2 from this new author.

Be sure to read the prequel to Fire and Ice on the author's website called Murder and Silk... http://victoriapaigebooks.com/murder-... It's excellent!

Dnf @ 8 percent

Sorry I can’t. The mmc is so ducking annoying and misgyonidtic and I guess we’re supposed to find that endearing. I don’t. Also the writing is poor. This author wants to understand a story with a lot of moving elements from the jump, which is hard because there’s a lot of information. To help us undersatand the author just info dumps constantly. For example,

“Derek had worked for Viktor before, and that was how he had met Maia, so he generally knew how the company operated. His former boss also called him occasionally for favors.”

There was no way to say this creatively…okay. The fmc is fine she’s just very TikTok Wattpad bad girl. Like she’s super badass and wins everything and doesn’t need a man except this misgoyntic dick just turns her on like where is the chemistry, the hotness, an actual badass idk. The plot was just starting out but I found it to be lackluster.

I found this book from a teaser video on TikTok that promised something that was never delivered.
This book features terrible writing and poor editing. It was all tell and absolutely no show. Much of the dialogue felt weirdly formal and incongruent. Reading this was a chore. DNF.

MMC is possessive in a creepy way, and every male character calls the MFC by a pet name immediately after meeting her, which is incredibly infantilizing and gross. There was zero romance. The main characters are in lust, but there was no seduction or build up to love, or even like. It was just poorly developed relationships all around. The spicy scenes feel clinical and I found myself skimming through them. Many of the descriptive choices were the opposite of arousing. The premise and characters had potential, but this was a fail for me. I’m so confused by the 4 and 5 star reviews?! I want my time back.

Kick-a h
Loved this book for the h. She is strong & independent without being stubborn unnecessarily(like most of the authors write when they want to make the h strong)
Action packed book, where the h is in the middle of it and thinks nothing about killing people.
I think the h's character is like most action Hero's.She thinks and behaves like a H :) Loved it.
I would recco this book and would definitely re-read it.

I like strong women who kick ass and shoot guns and save the world. Unfortunately, the Alpha-hole in this story does not.

The plot and characters provided fertile ground for a wonderful story, but there were too many situations that were told very flat, and the sex was perfunctory.

There are lots of other alpha males introduced, which will feed the series for quite a while. Actually, those guys were a lot nicer to be around than our hero Jack. So perhaps there is hope going forward.

3.7 🌟 really
I really liked this but only because of Maia, she’s so bad ass. Think of Mr. and Mrs. Smith but they already know the truth about each other.
Jack was such an alpha douche. Whyd he get with a bad bitch if he couldn’t handle being with a bad bitch? I don’t get it. I would have given this a 5 stars if Jack was more supportive of Maia and didn’t just rain on her parade.

I usually have a strong tolerance for bad writing but I only managed to get to 20%. I do admit that I skimmed the remainder of this crap and this review will be mostly about that first part. I rarely skim/DNF a book but more importantly, I write reviews even less than that. But this book made me mad on every fricking page that I HAD to write it or I would be going crazy.

REASONS I HATED THIS BOOK:
(they are not ordered by how much I hated them)
1- Bad writing. Apparently, our dear writer never heard of the words "show, don't tell" becuase almost all sentences were just told us. She does this. She says that. She got hit. She went there etc.
2- Inconsistent character traits

3- Unlogical reactions to events

4- BULLSHIT EVENTS

5- Unrealistic relationships

6- Maia is an idiot?

There are way more things that irritated me about the first 20% of the book. Like I said, i did read the rest but skimmed a lot of it and altought it my review isn't as cruel as anything this book made me go through, it wouldn't be fair of me to rant about the remaining part in case I am missing parts due to my skimming.

For those of you who are unfortunate enough to read my review, normally, I would love any gramatical correction as english is not my native language but I am BEGGING you: Please don't make me come back to this and let me remember the horror that is Fire and Ice.

This was a great story! I loved Maia and Jack was great. This is the first story I've read by this author and based on this I'll definitely be reading more of her work.

Maia is a special agent and is a very strong woman (both physically and mentally). She's in a dangerous line of work and has had past tragedies so she doesn't allow herself to get involved in relationships. She lives for her job but isn't afraid to bend some rules to do what needs done. When she works a job protecting a witness before a trial, she meets Jack for the first time.

Jack is an ex-Navy SEAL and currently has a very successful defense company that develops weapons for the DoD. He lost a fiance years before and since then he hasn't been able to fall in love. Now he just dates women for a few months each before moving on. He's a good guy though and treats his women well, making his limitations in the relationships clear from the start. When he meets Maia for the first time, the attraction is so strong he knows he has to get her in to his bed. He doesn't realize that a brief affair with Maia might not be enough.

Maia and Jack both feel an intense attraction to each other. Jack ends up getting time with Maia when her cover is blown, she needs someplace safe for a few weeks and ends up at his beach house. She agrees to indulge in a brief affair with him for the few weeks she's there. While Jack and Maia get closer, danger still lurks and Jack is confronted a few times with the dangers on Maia's job. Jack discovers that he doesn't want to let Maia go at the end of the few weeks and convinces Maia he'll deal with her job and the danger involved if she'll give them a chance. During their time together, Maia has fallen for Jack regardless of her attempts to guard her heart. She agrees to try a relationship with Jack and is very worried that this is a recipe for disaster.

Things don't go easy for them and I felt bad for Jack at times. He's a total Alpha male and wants to protect his woman but that's the thing most likely to drive her away so he tries desperately to temper his instincts. He tends to get a little overly upset when she gets in risky situations but he has her back multiple times as things progress. Unfortunately when she has make an abrupt departure for an extended mission that's very important, Jack gets freaked by the danger and doesn't react well when he sees her next. In a serious bout of relationship dumbassedness, Jack lets his fears and anger loose and hurts Maia. He realizes his mistake and is desperate to talk to Maia and work things out. Unfortunately, by that time there are additional issues that must be overcome and Jack has to go save her. I really loved how things worked out and was quite happy with the ending and their HEA.

This was a great book. Maia and Jack are perfect for each other and it was fun seeing them work things out and realize it for themselves. The action plot was interesting and engaging. I'm looking forward to the next story in the series. I'd recommend this book. Thumbs up! :D

I had to take a moment. Grab some water because this book is hotness.

Jack has baggage and so does Maia, but they are thrown together in a mission. He is a retired ex Navy Seal and she is special op.

I couldn't stop reading. Their chemistry is so hot. This storyline is complicated, but worth trying to understand.

Such a good story. Strong alpha men, strong alpha woman, intriguing story, lust, sex, and an Amazing plot. You want suspense...this book gives you it. I never wanted to put this book down. Enjoy Jack and Maia. And pay attention to their friends. Love on them to. They may get a book.

I enjoyed Fire and Ice. It's an action romance, with a VERY strong h. The h is a female style James Bond - except that she works for a private contractor in the U.S. But she definitely has a license to kill (so, warning, the heroine/book is kind of cavalier towards violence and killing). She's also gorgeous and amazing at getting herself out of difficult situations against huge odds. To a James Bond-like unbelievable extent. And, like James Bond, she uses her sexuality in furtherance of her job.

In fact, the h is so kic-a$.$. and in control of her emotions that some people may find the book to be too lop-sided; although the H originally thinks that he only wants to hook up, he is clearly way more invested in their relationship for most of the book. In contrast, she treats him like a three-week stand for most of the book. I don't mind this kind of lop-sidedness, especially because most books have the opposite type of lop-sidedness. In fact, I enjoy this type of reverse sexism. ;-) But I think some people won't like her "male-like attitude." The H is possessive and protective and alpha, despite the unequal relationship.

I will read this author's next book, if there is one. I hope there will be!

Edited: Upon rereading this book before reading others by this author, I have to downgrade the book from 4 to 3 stars. The writing style is somewhat clunky. There's a lot of tell, not show, going on, and the dialogue and developments are stilted. I think this is endemic with authors' first books and will likely improve over time.

Edited again: upgrading to 3.5 stars after rereading again.

DNF at 15%.

Like the other lower-star reviews, I'm really confused about the high ratings on this book and am wondering if I'm reading a draft copy or something. The writing is...not good...and it could have used a heavy hand by a copy editor for both grammar and spelling issues.

The narrative is confusing, and the reader is told a lot and shown almost nothing. The FMC had a ton of potential and I love to read about badass women, but the MMC drugged her basically the third time they had ever met and she forgives him the instant she wakes up....despite being a hardened killer. He makes pretty gross sexual advances on her, and it's noted that every time he mentions that he's not going to force her into anything, he shuts down and the light/teasing is gone from his eyes. My guy, no one believes you're fine about the situation if you're pouting about it.

Ugh. I wanted to give it a chance, but I think it shows its age a bit....there's just so many similar/better books on the market right now.

Victoria page has done it again.! Fire and ice is one thriller, fast paced book. I really enjoyed reading this. Maia , our heroine was one sexy alpha female same goes for Jack(hero). The book have angst, action, emotion, sexy scenes , even funny seces and thrilling fights. It was very fantastic read.

The only problem because of which I didn’t give full ⭐️is because of ex lovers of both protagonists. They were everywhere. I usually hate other men/women presence or even overt mention but in this book i think it was somewhat justified. But still i thought some scenes were avoidable. And it did help that Jack and Maia was so crazy about each other.
This was my second book from the author. I will definitely read more from her.

I loved the writing, it was really well done. The storyline was interesting too. Unfortunately I cannot give it a five star review because of the main male character. I just didn’t care for his bossiness that well. She was this hot shot agent yet he manhandled her...uh nope!
