Imagine being given a second chance at life to embark on another exhilarating journey with your soulmate. This is what happened to Paul Grayson and Lynda Hill. In Second Chance by Sarah Henley, Paul and Lynda were given another chance at life.
Paul and the love of his life, Lynda, were given a rare second chance at life by Death itself. They were transported back to the day they first met. They were given the opportunity to relive their lives and make different choices. Paul began his transition journey to become Gabrielle. As the second chance came, so did danger. After suffering a head injury, George, Lynda's abusive ex's friend, believed that Lynda was his property, and he set out to get her. Meanwhile, drug lords were also after the couple, seeking to destroy their happiness.
I loved reading about the love story of Paul and Lynda in book one, and I was excited to continue from where I stopped. Their relationship is the heart of the story, and it is a joy to witness their love grow throughout the story. I admired the unconditional nature of Lynda's love. She did not care if it was Paul or Gabrielle. She loved them for who they were, irrespective of gender or physical appearance. This kind of love is rare and precious, and it shows that love conquers all. The action scenes in this book are heart-pumping. Henley effortlessly weaves together romance, suspense, and action. She easily balances the lighter moments with the heavier ones.
This book sheds light on the daily struggles and suicidal thoughts that many trans people face. Through Paul/Gabrielle's journey, Henley captures the issues trans people face. We could see his inner turmoil and struggles. The writing also let us empathize and connect with not only Paul but every transgender out there.
Henley's writing style is vivid and immersive. It easily transports readers to a world of danger, suspense, and love. I could easily picture the scenes that unfolded and experience Paul and Lynda's joys and struggles first-hand. I have a lot of things I love about this book; however, my only drawback is the abundance of errors that detract from the overall reading experience. They pulled me out of the story and disrupted the reading flow. Despite this, the book's strength outweighs its weaknesses. With some further editing, this book could truly become a masterpiece.
Henley's dedication and passion are evident in every page. I wholeheartedly rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a captivating and emotional read. It will surely entertain you and keep you at the edge of your seat.
