Published in 2007 (the Thai version reprinted four times in 2003-2004), this book should be an indispensable guide for newcomers or tourists keen on Ayutthaya due to its following wide coverage penned by 21 contributors as well as innumerable rare col0ur maps, paintings, relics, an Ayutthaya aerial photo taken in 2006, etc.
- The Kingdom of Ayutthaya - Rivers and Canals - Places of Cultural Heritage - Ethnic Groups in Ayutthaya - Kings, The Royal Family and Nobles - Personalities - Politics - The Economy - Society - Culture - Miscellaneous - Ayutthaya Today
The aim of this cherishing (mostly) and informative book as stated in the Editor's Note is that "This volume attempts to fill the gap and appeal to the "cultural tourist" and general reader who would like to know more about the history, culture and society of this once brilliant centre of an Asian civilization." (p. 352) Amazingly, the three-language map of Ayutthaya on the frontispiece would be a delight to those who could read Thai, English and Japanese. Again, the good news is divulged via another note, telling us, "The Toyota Foundation therefore decided to have an improved and depened [sic] version translated into English and Japanese to mark the 120th year of Thai-Japanese relations." (p. 353)
