E se in "Drive-in 2" vediamo i personaggi sopravvissuti aggirarsi in un paesaggio irriconoscibile, "La notte del drive-in 3" ci catapulterà definitivamente in un microcosmo ancora più delirante, un mondo di misteriose e inclassificabili meraviglie, in cui ci si imbatte in inondazioni di proporzioni bibliche, in un pesce gatto che aspira a ingoiarsi la balena di Giona e in una schiera di creature oscure, di una malvagità paragonabile solo a quella dell'essere umano al suo peggio.

Dinosauri gonfiabili e pop corn giganti
"Il mio messaggio è semplice. Nelle tenebre e nel dolore c'è piacere. La luce non può essere apprezzata senza il buio. Il segreto è l'intrattenimento. Alla fine della strada ho fondato un'umile Chiesa delle Tenebre e del Dolore. Funziona ogni giorno. Il tutto proiettato sulla mia faccia. E quando qualcuno diventa una stella della Chiesa, noi ne registriamo le loro azioni e le riproduciamo più e più volte per nostro piacere. Niente effetti speciali. Niente battute fiacche. Nessuno fa finta di mangiare interiora. Tutto vero, non racconto balle.
Farò di te una stella. La tua agonia verrà registrata per sempre nell'unica maniera che importa davvero. Su film.

Etichettare o cercare di descrivere "Drive-in" è un po' come dimostrare l'esistenza di Dio: non ci riesci.
Il kitsch diventa regola prima che governa il microcosmo del Drive-in (ma chi li ha mai visti qui in Italia i drive-in?); i moventi dei personaggi si trasformano in esili scempiaggini al cospetto di entità sovrannaturali che fagocitano senza porre domande né farsi troppi scrupoli.
Effettivamente non si sa di che morte morire quando il catalogo è così ricco di opzioni: schiattare di inedia mentre si guardano in loop schifosi b-movies senza arte né parte, oppure suicidarsi dopo l'ennesima sermone paternalistico di Popalong Cassidy, simpatico televisore antropomorfo dall'indole non troppo amichevole?
I mostri hanno il loro morboso fascino e in qualche modo si riscattano per le classiche esigenze narrative, ma l'essere umano gioca sempre d'anticipo e sa autodistruggersi da solo, senza aiuti esterni.
P.S. Avete presente l'emozione di pescare quei dvd marci, prezzo un euro e due calci in culo, dai cestoni degli ipermercati? Ecco, nemmeno io.

Io non ci riesco a scrivere recensioni quando un libro mi piace. È questo mi è piaciuto come il bitter dal congelatore quando fa caldo. O come una partita di basket al terzo supplementare. O come il Liverpool che rimonta tre gol al Milan e vince la Champions. Leggete questa trilogia del Drive-in. Ci sono cannibali e macchine infernali, mostri e popcorn (molti popcorn), dinosauri scorreggioni, uomini con la testa a forma di televisore, pesci elettrici, sangue, una città che si chiama Città Di Merda , avventure pinocchiesche. Leggetelo, perché si capisce che Lansdale si è divertito un mondo a scriverlo. Leggetelo, perché io horror, fantasy, fantascienza, vade retro! eppure questo l’ho letto tutto d’un fiato. Leggetelo, perché fa ridere, paura e schifo contemporaneamente. Insomma, leggetelo. Oppure leggete un altro Lansdale a caso, perché vada come vada, beccate bene sempre.

Trilogia che va dal più bello al più brutto secondo me. L'ultimo non mi è piaciuto proprio.

Stellt euch ein Autokino vor, das groß genug ist, viertausend Autos zu fassen. Dann habt ihr eine Idee vom Orbit, dem größten Drive-in von Texas. Jeden Freitag gibt es dort die All-Night-Horror- Show. Genau hier sind wir jetzt, alles ist perfekt. Aber plötzlich taucht aus dem Nichts dieser blutrote Komet auf. Schlagartig ist das Orbit von der Außenwelt isoliert, eingeschlossen von einer tödlichen Leere. Es gibt kein Entrinnen. Die Nahrungsmittel werden knapp. Erste Fälle von Totschlag und Kannibalismus treten auf. Doch das Schlimmste steht uns erst bevor ...
Was habe ich mich auf dieses Buch gefreut und ich wurde nicht enttäuscht. Ich habe schon lange nicht mehr so eine verrückte und total abgefahrene Geschichte gelesen wie "Drive-In" Diese Story ist wirklich mit nichts anderem vergleichbar. Auch wenn man vielleicht denkt, dass Lansdale super schreibt und die anderen Geschichten einem gut gefallen haben, vergesst es. Das ist wie Steak und Schokolade miteinander zu vergleichen.
Jack geht fast jeden Freitag mit seinen Freunden in das riesen Autokino. Da gibt es immer eine lange Horrornacht in der verschiedene Filme gezeigt werden. Am Anfang läuft noch alles normal und die Jungs haben ihren Spaß. Aber irgendwann taucht dieser rote Komet auf und plötzlich sind die Leute im Drive-In eingeschlossen. Außen herum wabert eine Suppe, die alles tötet was mit ihr in Berührung kommt. Die Leute bekommen Angst und wissen nicht, was sie tun sollen. Und am Anfang gibt es auch noch genug Essen,. auch wenn es sich ausschließlich um Süßkram und Softdrinks handelt. Erstaunlicher weise laufen die Filme immer weiter. Doch bald bricht das Chaos aus und die Menschen benehmen sich schlimmer als die Tiere und als dann noch die Lebensmittel zu Ende gehen, reagiert nur noch Gewalt und Chaos. Jack und seine Freunde versuchen zu überleben, aber einfach ist das nicht.
In diesem Buch stecken 3 Bände die zusammen gehören. Jede dieser Geschichten ist wieder ganz anderes, aber alle sind total abgedreht. Ich hatte beim Lesen einen wahnsinns Spaß und am Liebsten würde ich gleich noch einmal von vorne beginnen. Ich hab laut gelacht, mich richtig geekelt, ich war fassungslos, traurig und wütend. Beim lesen habe ich wohl alle Emotionen durchlebt die es gibt. Und das bei praktisch einem Buch. Aber überwogen hat auf jeden Fall der Spaß.
Der Schreibstil ist locker, flüssig und sehr derbe. Zarte Seelchen sollten unbedingt die Hände vom Buch lassen, denn es ist nicht umsonst bei Heyne Hardcore erscheinen. Es geht teilweise echt krass zur Sache und Kannibalismus ist echt nichts für jedermann.
Ich vergebe 5 von 5 Punkten, den Favoritenstatus und eine absolute Leseempfehlung für alle Horrorfreunde und Hardcoreleser. Ihr werdet es lieben, denn es ist wirklich mit nichts anderem vergleichbar. Und das Ende....... ja das Ende....... Unglaublich. Endlich mal wieder ein Buch das mich von der ersten bis zur letzten Seite gepackt hat.

Lansdale scrive una trilogia al limite del sociopatico, condita con scene truculente e volutamente provocatorie.
Anche se l'ambientazione è diversa, per le atrocità che vengono perpetrate mi ha ricordato moltissimo “ Il condominio ” di ballardiana memoria. Sull’intreccio non voglio anticipare nulla perché il tutto è talmente paradossale e inimmaginabile che preferisco tacere.

È come essere in presenza del Signore del Gran Casino, dell’Oscuro Principe del Sangue e del Caos e della Spazzatura, del Cattivo Popcorn, del Dio della Grande Nottata Horror in tutta la Sua dolce realtà.
A caratterizzare questa triade è il forte senso del granguignolesco e surreale che strizza con consapevolezza l’occhio al genere weird con un tocco di sagace ironia. Vi è una vera e propria esaltazione del bizzarro, tuttavia se primo e secondo libro qualitativamente si equivalgono, è il volume che va a concludere la serie quello ad essere il più debole e il meno ispirato soprattutto nell’epilogo con il quale ho avuto l’impressione che l’autore abbia voluto dare un contentino ai suoi lettori.

I really enjoyed The Bottoms and Savage Season (and the Hap & Leonard series), and being a huge horror fan, I thought this would be especially up my alley; this is not the Lansdale I expected nor love. This feels like a little kid trying to write a story where people go to see a movie, but then a mystery happens, and then monsters, and then aliens, and then dinosaurs, and then, and then, and then and then and then… But also, because he wants oh-so-much to be a big kid, he has to talk about the S-E-X (the grown-ups call it “fucking” — teehee). How many ways can a person describe rape, masturbation, sex, tits, assholes, anal sex, pussies, cocks…just so much nonstop crudity (and I’m not a prude by any means, but anything wears thin when it’s so goddamn incessant). Seriously, all of this just feels so immature, so repetitive, so trying to be a B-movie. But the problem is B-movies — in the format they’re intended — last 80 to 100 minutes and then we’re moving on; this just drags it’s childish, kitchen sink premise on for 10+ hours (your mileage may vary, depending on how fast you read) and it more than overstays it’s welcome.

Popcorn King, where have you been all my life?
Lansdale has long been on my list of "I need to get into that guy's work some time" authors. I was checking out a list of Most Disturbing Books Ever, and Drive-In was mentioned in the comments. I was not disappointed. This was a gruesome read, with depraved violence presented with a nonchalance that may be more disturbing than the violence itself. It reads like a cartoon, the kind you watch when you're tripping with your buddies and don't even realize how scared you are until you have to get up and go into another room.
I actually haven't gotten into the next book yet; giving my brain a bit of a breather. But I hope I get to learn something about the aliens, and see some Americans kick their asses. That's kind of our thing. ;-]

Ich habe selten sowas Schräges und Abgedrehtes wie die "Drive-In" Trilogie von #JoeRLansdale gelesen. Zugegeben - da gab es schon etliche Short Storys vom Meister des "Mojo-Storytelling", die mich sprachlos zurückließen aber diese Geschichte hier topt es wirklich.
"Stellt euch ein Autokino vor, das groß genug ist, viertausend Autos zu fassen. [...] Jeden Freitag gibt es dort die All-Night-Horror-Show. [...] alles ist perfekt. Aber plötzlich taucht aus dem Nichts dieser blutrote Komet auf."
... Und so nimmt die Kult-Trilogie ihren Lauf. Das Drive-In ist abgeschnitten von der Außenwelt, es kommt zu Gewaltausbrüchen und Kannibalismus. Für Jack und seine Freunde beginnt der Kampf ums Überleben und eine Reise durch einen nicht Enden wollenden Albtraum.
Mehr will ich nicht verraten. Nur so viel, es bleibt nicht bei diesem Setting. Im Verlauf werden dem Leser noch allerhand skurrile Wesen und Orte begegnen: Dinosaurier, der Popcorn King, Popalong Cassidy, fleischfressende Filmstreifen, schwimmende Busse, Shit Town, ein überdimensionaler Katzenwels mit Verdauungsproblemen, Papierflieger und ... ähm ja auch Aliens.
Klingt verrückt? Jap, ist so.
Aber wenn man sich von Lansdales Genremix eines versprechen kann, dann ist es spannende Unterhaltung. Und in diesem Fall auch nicht ganz ernst gemeintes, kurioses und äußerst kurzweiliges Lesevergnügen.
Fazit: Keine hohe Literatur und auch keine Lektüre für Zartbesaitete aber wer sich auf diese verrückte Story im Backsteinformat einlassen kann, der wird ein Kaleidoskop an fantasievoller Unterhaltung erleben, das irgendwie hängenbleibt - ob man will oder nicht.

This one is a little hard to rate accurately, as it is a collection of three novels. The first one, the original "Drive-In" is a 5 star book. It is absolutely insane, and I think it was the original Bizarro fiction novel. After that, the novels decrease in quality a bit. The second one is great fun, if a little brief. The third felt too long to me, and I thought Lansdale made a mistake in trying to explain the whole thing. I liked how in the first two novels, nothing is ever really explained. Its just batshit insanity and our narrator and his friends trying to make it through. He tries to explain it all and wrap it up at the end of the third novel and it didn't really work. I felt like it was a rushed and sort of cheap conclusion. That said, the whole saga is fantastic reading and recommended for horror and bizarro fans. The Drive In - 5 Stars, The Drive In 2 - 4 Stars, the Drive In 3 - 3 stars.

Libro folle, delirante, trash e volgare, ma che ha l'effetto di trascinarti con se' fino all'ultima pagina. Una trilogia che non ti aspetti e che delude solo un po' nella parte centrale. Per gli amanti del cinema e della perdizione morale e spirituale.

Joe Lansdale is out of control and I love it. I love this book. It's crazy,wacky and completely bizarre. Fantastic.

Il terzo libro della trilogia è il più bello e paradossalmente anche quello dove succedono meno cose assurde.
Non so come avrei fatto a leggere i tre libri in volumi divisi, perché non sono autoconclusivi e finito uno mi veniva subito voglia di vedere come continuava la storia, specialmente tra il secondo e il terzo che ho letteralmente divorato uno dopo l'altro.
La trilogia è narrata un po' in prima e un po' in terza persona, da punti vista diversi, tutti totalmente inaffidabili. Questa è stata la cosa che mi ha fatto sclerare di più in assoluto durante la lettura perchè non si capisce davvero più cosa è vero e cosa no. E in realtà anche alla fine mi è rimasto il dubbio. Il libro si conclude in modo un po' frettoloso forse e poco chiaro.
Non dico di più perché qualsiasi accenno alla trama sarebbe spoiler, ma posso dire che questa è la trilogia perfetta per chi ama l'horror, la fantascienza, le storie assurde e con colpi di scena.
Ci sono però delle descrizioni un po' troppo splatter e gore ripetute più volte e che non portano niente in più alla storia e infastidiscono solamente il lettore, mentre Lansdale è bravissimo a scioccare anche senza questi dettagli. Per questo motivo per me sono 4⭐.
Il terzo libro della trilogia è il più bello e paradossalmente anche quello dove succedono meno cose assurde.

Naja, so richtig war es mir nix.
Schreiben kann er ja, der Joe. Das hat er schon oft genug bewiesen. Hier allerdings catcht mich so gar nichts. Ich hätte mir bei dem Aufhänger und dem Kult hinter der Serie doch etwas (sehr viel) mehr erwartet. Und immer, wenn die Geschichte endlich anfing interessant zu werden, schweifte er mit der Geschichte irgendeiner unwichtigen Nebenperson ab. Die Story ging dadurch nicht weiter. Dabei wäre die durchaus gut gewesen. Da fehlt mir momentan einfach der Nerv für.

I struggled to get through this! I would have DNFed if I hadn't got The Drive-In: Multiplex as part of my Night Worms, but since I do want to read that - since I bought the darn thing - I just kept going.
The writing is good for the most part, and the ends of the first and third books in the collection work pretty well, but overall it just wasn't for me. Too much cannibalism (however much you think is "too much," there is more of it in these books), too much literal shit (whyyyyyy is there so much poop all the time?), too much off-hand gross misogyny that is not negated by Cool and Tough Girl Grace, and too many characters that all have the same voice - snarky, garrulous, blase when it comes to the horrors of the world - that after awhile got really grating.
I will admit to being slightly intrigued to see what other authors do with this universe. Hopefully it's something other than "we don't have anything to eat, we're all disgusting, let's eat other people and make jokes while we do."

Ho fatto un po’ fatica ad entrare nella storia, ma superato un primo scoglio iniziale (un centinaio di pagine nel mio caso), la storia si fa leggere, complice la brevità dei capitoli. Tuttavia ho trovato il linguaggio utilizzato dall’autore eccessivamente volgare, intriso di parolacce e la presenza di scene troppo esplicite (sesso e violenze di vario genere) che, a mio avviso, non hanno apportato alcunché alla storia.
Consigliato agli amanti degli horror/splatter, ma aspettatevi di tutto perché non c’è niente di reale in quello che leggerete.
3 ⭐️ per l’originalità (in alcuni punti penso che l’autore abbia davvero superato se stesso) e per l’effetto sorpresa che porta a pensare continuamente “ma che cosa sto leggendo?”. Carino il finale, io però mi aspettavo altro.

The trilogy of critically acclaimed and cult-favorite "Drive In" novels by Joe Lansdale is collected for the first time in one volume. The saga is a shaggy dog tale - a splatter/horror/sci-fi/apocalyptic mutant that's set in and styled after the very drive-in B-movie culture it tributes.
The setup: four friends join the legion of drive-in fanatics at the all-night horror movie marathon one Friday night at the Orbit Drive-In in Nacogdoches, TX.
It turns into a real horror show when a mysterious red comet engulfs the entire drive-in in an impenetrable bubble of black goo, which melts skin and bone on contact. In many ways it's like the television series LOST - if the inhabitants got to their dark hearts a lot quicker and started eating people.
The first volume is fantastic. The middle story is a bit abbreviated and uneven in tone. It tries a lot harder to point out the satire and social commentary. The last volume does a great job of piecing together the cosmology of the freakish universe created, and balance out the soapboxing of Big Ideas and the no-holds-barred nastiness and absurdity of the narrative.
I will say that all the characters in the novellas (especially the 2nd and 3rd installments) start talking the same, and the banter comes off as Aaron Sorkin or a la King in its cloying wit and sameness.

Questo libro mi ha lasciata un po' sconcertata, prima di tutto per la storia in sé che io definisco un delirio a non finire, ma che verso la fine riesce a trovare un senso nella sua pazzia. E appunto per questa sua assurdità mi è piaciuto molto. Nonostante ciò, se devo però giudicare libro per libro, vi sono varie note dolenti...
Il primo libro è stata una rivelazione e non mi voglio dilungare più di tanto perché mi è piaciuto e se dovessi valutarlo singolarmente, personalmente gli darei 5 stelle su 5.
Dal secondo in poi iniziano ad esserci dei problemi. Il secondo è stato abbastanza noioso da leggere, all'inizio ero veramente entusiasta perché pensavo che più o meno lo stesso delirio del primo si ripetesse nel secondo, ma con uno scenario diverso invaso da dinosauri. Invece mi sono trovata di fronte ad un racconto di storie di personaggi che sinceramente ho trovato poco interessanti e in un certo senso ripetitive. Certo sono servite per andare avanti con la storia, ma diciamo che molte parti le avrei volute evitare perché le ritenevo non necessarie. Perciò se devo dare un voto sarebbe 1 stella su 5.
Il terzo. Finalmente è tornato il delirio, finalmente ci sono nuove avventure sempre più elettrizzanti da tenermi attaccata alle pagine, ma... porca di una miseria, che fine ha fatto Bob? Dove è andato a finire l'amico che nel primo libro ha salvato la pelle al nostro caro protagonista e che nel secondo l'ha accompagnato nella sua lotta contro Popalong Cassidy? Dove? È morto? Sembrerebbe di sì, ma come??? Mi ha dato molto fastidio anche perché mi ero affezionata a lui e di colpo è sparito senza un motivo lasciandomi questa nota amarissima in bocca. Valutare quest'ultimo libro mi è difficile ma gli darei un 3 perché era "epico" (passate il termine) come il primo, ma questo errore non lo riesco proprio ad accettare.
In conclusione è un bel libro da leggere secondo me se vi interessa il genere macabro, horror e "pulp", ma non affezionatevi a Bob.

Il film più allucinato e irresistibile che abbiate mai visto.
Alla parola “drive-in” ho subito drizzato le antenne, soprattutto perché ho sempre subìto il fascino di quei luoghi un po’ retrò, impregnati di cultura pop, dove file di macchine sbuffanti si radunano disordinatamente davanti a grandi schermi che illuminano la notte con le scene dei film più famosi.
Ma l’Orbit, l’immenso drive-in creato dalla mente di Lansdale, è molto più insolito e grottesco: è il punto di partenza per avventure incredibili, in cui figurano dinosauri a grandezza naturale, pellicole carnivore, tigri tatuate che prendono magicamente vita, pesci gatto giganti e perfino una Città di Merda.
Ho apprezzato in particolar modo la costruzione dei villains nel corso dei vari capitoli (il Re del Popcorn, così come Popalong Cassidy): grotteschi, fuori di testa, ma anche portatori di una propria filosofia, una linea di pensiero che è tutto sommato coerente con il loro personaggio, per quanto deviato e crudele. Il primo, in particolar modo, si pone come una guida per i disgraziati rimasti bloccati all’Orbit, servendosi di un vero e proprio manifesto annunciato tramite altoparlante e dandogli qualcosa di nuovo in cui credere.
A metà tra horror e fantascienza, con quel pizzico di umorismo che la rende irresistibile, questa trilogia pulp (che Einaudi ha sapientemente riunito in un unico tomo) si snoda con un ritmo cinematografico, pieno di azione, dettagli macabri e con un forte impatto visivo. A tratti splatter, un po’ cyberpunk sul finale, ma sempre visionaria e imprevedibile. Un racconto coloratissimo, allucinato, spassoso e nauseante, che pur perdendo un po’ di efficacia in alcuni punti, riuscirà comunque a tenervi con gli occhi incollati allo schermo...ops, alle pagine.

i really wanted to love this book because it has all of the elements of something i should like--exploitation films & a big ol' drive-in theater, cannibalism, aliems, etc., but after a while, there was just too much. i enjoyed the first novel the most, the second was merely okay, and the third one probably shouldn't have come to fruition--although, i actually did really like the ending. which surprised me! here i am dragging through the last chapters thinking 'is this ever going to end? please end :(' and when i got to the ending, i actually found myself enjoying it again.
i'm willing to give joe r lansale another shot because he writes pretty well. i think my first time reading anything he ever wrote was in splatterpunks? too lazy to actually get off my butt and check, altho i do recommend that if you're looking for a nice, quick anthology of horror shorts. ANYWAY. back on topic. overall, he's a decent, relatively clever writer but wrt the drive-in series i feel like his dialog gets a little stale and repetitive. i think had i stretched the stories out or not read them as one single novel, it might have been more enjoyable. but tomato, potato, ykwim? who knows.

Io amo Lansdale. Lo amo profondamente perché è uno scrittore che scrive perché gli piace farlo, che non pretende di portare chissà quale messaggio mistico e ricercato. Scrive di dinosauri gonfiabili, di detective dai metodi poco ortodossi, zombie a Natale.
Solo con un atteggiamento del genere, senza prendersi sul serio e senza scendere a compromessi con il pubblico si può scrivere qualcosa come la trilogia del Drive-In. A dirla proprio tutta, la due stelle mancanti sono date dalla scivolata delle ultime due parti della trilogia, che in confronto alla prima sono nettamente inferiori.
La trilogia del Drive-In è una sorta di b-movie cartaceo che parla dei b-movie, mantenendone volutamente l'atmosfera surreale e le trovate incredibilmente bizzarre. È apocalittico, è drammatico, è forte; però i cattivi sono i pop corn, i dolci stucchevoli che annebbiano la mente, l'arena del massacro è un grande Drive-In.
Difficilmente i non amanti del genere potrebbero apprezzare, ma credo che valga la pena dare una possibilità a questo libro anche solo per poi rimanerne perplessi ma avere un argomento di conversazione con i conoscenti. 'Sai, ho letto questo libro delirante…'

Ammetto che per me è complicato scrivere una recensione su questo primo capitolo della trilogia.
Soprattutto perché si tratta interamente di una storia di azioni, senza grandi momenti di riflessione, condita anche con diversi momenti un tantino splatter.
Eppure ho adorato l’autore anche in questa veste.
E, nonostante non ci siano grandi momenti morali, alcune riflessioni pure vengono automatiche.
Nello specifico perché si tratta di un libro che punta a rendere un’allegoria utopistica della società americana, mettendo insieme gli elementi più trash dei film horror, in un mix entusiasmante.
Cosa succederebbe se mettessimo insieme i rappresentanti delle varie categorie di cliché americani e li facessimo interagire a forza all’interno di un ambiente ristretto con penuria di beni di sostentamento? Quello che viene fuori è qualcosa tra l’angosciante e l’esilarante, che mette in luce tutte le debolezze del genere umano e tutte le nefandezze più becere di cui questo è capace.
Perché parliamoci chiaro: a parte certe esasperazioni teatraleggianti, quei personaggi potremmo essere tutti noi.
Ammetto che per me è complicato scrivere una recensione su questo primo capitolo della trilogia.

LIBRO 1 5⭐
Una lettura spumeggiante, piena di ironia e infinite assurdità. Un libro dalle tinte horror, o meglio dire gore, in pieno stile B-Movie. Divertente, scanzonato, e come ho già detto assolutamente fuori di testa. Bellissimo!
LIBRO 2 3⭐
Dopo il primo libro pieno di scoppiettanti assurdità, questo secondo capitolo mi ha entusiasmata poco.
Non mancano i momenti esilaranti e totalmente no sence, tipo il funerale con il T-Rex o Mr. Popalong, ma il resto è decisamente sottotono.

Un degno finale per una storia che mi ha fatto sentire costantemente sotto gli effetti droghe allucinogene. Sento già la mancanza di Jack e i suoi compagni, e soprattutto del pesce gatto...
