Welcome to Pecan Valley, where the town may be small but the townspeople will always lend a helping hand or a shoulder to lean on. Where good times, good humor, and good people will always lead to happily ever after.
Life for Felicity, and her teen children, is finally back on track. After her divorce, she wasn’t sure if her sweet family would ever be the same. Graham is still recovering from his wife’s death years ago and trying to help his teen daughter get her life together. Who is he kidding? His daughter hates him. Forget lemons––he’s got the entire lemon tree. So when Felicity suggests they join forces and help each other, he’s all in. And suddenly he can’t stop thinking about her as more than just a friend. Too bad their timing couldn’t be worse…
Because life rarely goes as planned. Luckily there are many different kinds of family to hold you together and lift you up...plus maybe even a little love between friends.

Accidentally Family by Sasha Summers Contemporary romance. Made family. Though Felicity is divorced and raising two teens, she finds herself with a toddler again when her ex husbands suddenly dies and leaves her as guardian. Grant is recovering from his wife’s death and needs to reconnect with his troubled daughter. Grant and Felicity help support each other through abrupt life changes. Teen drama and grief, and just growing up adds to the complexity of changing families.
A lot of sorrow, rebuilding, resilience, plus family love and support. It’s dramatic. It’s angsty. It’s tear inducing. There’s romance. There’s friendship. And it’s a ultimately heartwarming journey. I have to admire Felicity. Her strength is impressive. The heart of the made family. 4.5
Love, loss and family are at the heart of Sasha Summers’ first book in her Pecan Valley series, introducing us the Otto-Buchanan family where life is about to get a little messy for single-mum, Felicity.
...we could be a decent family. Messed up, for sure, but isn’t every family?”
Told in the third person POV, Summers weaves together the story of several characters and whilst there were a couple of moments where the story hit a bit of a lull for me, overall she does an amazing job of keeping the flow as we move from one character to another, setting up future storylines whilst dealing with teenage angst, first loves, second chances and new beginnings.
I know what I want. More than anything. You.”
I usually don’t like comparing authors, but for me this definitely had a feel of Sarah Morgan’s more recent offerings and based on the fact she’s a favourite I don’t think that’s an unreasonable comparison to make. So if you’re a fan of hers or simply small town romances centralised around strong women facing the day-to-day challenges of life and love, then Accidentally Family is one I recommend.

Received an Advance Reader Copy in exchange for a fair review 4.5 stars. So emotional and beautifully written! “Accidentally Family”, by Sasha Summers (Entangled: Amara), is a wonderful story about hope and second chances, new beginnings and new families, with surprisingly realistic characters going through some hard experiences. I was so invested in this romance novel I read it in one setting. The honesty and kindness between the romantic couple and almost all characters moved me. Even the more nasty characters show some sort of redemptive traits in the end. There are some heartbreaking moments with baby Jack. There’s no far-fetched drama, no plastic characters, no instant sex; just people trying to rebuild their lives after fate threw them a curve ball. Besides the main couple, there are other couples/characters fully deserving their own story.
You all know how much I love small-town romances. So when I saw the cover of this one I had to have it. Then when I saw the series title I was lost, or hungry, it doesn't matter which one only that I knew I had to read it.
Another good point for the author is the fact that within pages of the book she had me crying. I love it when an author can do that.
Sasha Summers is a new author for me. So it was wonderful that I was able to get into the story right away. This one is a heartbreaker for sure. What this family goest through it so sad and horrible. But I really liked how for the most part the kids stuck with her.
Felicity is such a good person. You just can't help by like her. Sometimes I thought she was a little too nice but I got why she always wanted to see the good in life. What she is willing to do for her ex is just special.
I also really enjoyed Graham. He realized that in her grief he almost forgot about his daughter and is working very hard to fix that. I didn't care for how she acted at times, it reminded me of an immature person but I get that. She lost her mom when she was young and still isn't handling it well. I'm an adult and still haven't gotten over the passing of my mom.
Together they work. They are simply good people. I loved all the other characters in the story and I wanted more. I'm thinking I know how the next book is about but since I can't find anything about it I'm not sure.
I think my only issue with the book is that I would have liked to have more romance between Graham and Felicity. I felt they deserved more. As a whole, I love it and can't wait for more. It might have been a little bit of women's fiction but still a good story for those who love just romance.
This book is a sweet look at two families that have been devastated by loss and betrayal. Summers deftly weaves the plot between the main three women of the story, along with a couple of the guys, too. She did a good job of transitioning from each person’s point of view and story arc without annoying the reader by switching on horrible cliffies at the end of chapters or switching too often. No character-hopping whiplash but still enticing enough to keep me wanting to eagerly turn the pages.
Overall, this novel evokes all the warm fuzzies and a few tears that makes this a great, feel-good beach read—something I desperately needed with all the stress of dealing with the Covid-19 scare. Highly recommend!!
Felicity was supposed to celebrate her daughter's graduation party, when she gets a disturbing call and has to rush to the hospital. As a turn of events, she gets to have to care for her ex- husband's toddler. The ex husband who abbandoned her and their kids to marry another woman, younger than her and make a son with her. Things are hard, since he hadn't the best relationship with his children, so to accept the current situation is definitely not an easy thing for Felicity and her kids.
Enter Graham in the picture. An old friend of Felicity and her ex husband. A doctor who lost his wife many years ago and gets to raise his teen daughter who's very troubled and makes his life rather difficult. Things get complicated when he comes close to her once again.
I really enjoyed this book! It was very heartfelt, it warmed my heart and I felt close to these families, in a way I didn't expect. I wanted to help them heal, I wanted to smash some heads and I just wanted the best for them. I enjoyed some of the funny scenes, I teared up in others and I generally enjoyed this second chance romance, even though it's one of my least favorite tropes. This one won me and I definitely recommend it! Now I need to read the next books in this series, because I'm seriously invested in these characters and I need their stories!
This was a touching story about a rather saintly woman, Felicity, whose husband left her for a younger woman. She’s raising her teenage children when she suddenly has to take in the injured toddler son of her ex-husband. Meanwhile, her husband’s former best friend, Graham, is having trouble coping with his troubled daughter after his wife’s death. Isn’t it lucky that he meets up with Felicity who, on top of all her other challenges, kindly helps out with Graham’s daughter.
It’s a sad story as all the teenagers have a lot to deal with and the two single parents struggle to see if romance can bloom in the wake of tragedy.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book that I received from Netgalley; however, the opinions are my own and I did not receive any compensation for my review.
Very enjoyable read that at first I was a bit hesitant because the POV's were from so many different characters and until I could sort them out, I was a bit confused. After this though, the writing and storyline was smooth sailing and I was 100% engrossed in stories of teen angst, anger and hurt, second chances, friendship, and love.
I am actually excited to see what is in store next for this town of pecans!
It is the night of Felicity's daughter's high school graduation and they get a sudden call when her ex-husband is involved in a tragic car accident. Felicity speeds to the hospital with her two teens, Honor and Nick. Although her divorce was difficult, quite naturally Felicity wants her children to be their with their father. With her ex being critically injured from the accident he makes a very difficult request to Felicity - for her to look after his toddler son, Jack.
Meanwhile, her best friend Graham, a doctor on scene atthe hospital, is there for her. His rebellious daughter Diana is also at the hospital at the time because Graham wants to keep an eye on her.
These are all of the characters in this wonderful book - Felicity, Honor, Nick, Graham, Diana and Jack...
I don't know how Sasha Summers did it with this book, but each and every character played remarkable roles in this book. Those six characters that I just listed will come together as a family. No, that is not a spoiler. I wouldn't do that to any reader of this review. The genre is romance, which pretty much guarantees a happy ending. What I will do is to tell you that the Ms. Summers crafted a very emotional story about two families becoming one. The journey is indeed troubled, but proves to be very much worth it.
I'd like mention something about the parents in this story - Felicity and her relationship with her kids, and Graham's relationship with Diana. They were exceptional parents, even though there was so much angst involved with the teenagers. I also loved that the author did not shy away from some of the problems that the teens were facing during the transitions occurring in this book. Then there is baby Jack... You just have to read the book to see how this all played out.
Accidentally Family is a touching story with remarkable characters and delicate situations that kept me so invested while reading this book that I could not put it down. Kudos to Ms. Summers for creating such a warm story, one that will have an impact me for a long time to come.
Many thanks to Entangled; Amara and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
I adored everything about this book and want to read it again! My absolute favorite thing about the book is that the author told this story from the viewpoint of many different characters. I am sure that wasn’t easy and some may find it confusing, but I ate it up. There were so many side stories for which it was nice to see more than just the surface.
I cried. An author that can make me cry becomes a favorite because sometimes we need a good cry. A book that is perfect and sweet from beginning to end can be nice, but real life is up and down all the time.
Graham and Felicity have been through and are going through a lot of ups and downs, but what they find in each other makes the downs easier to take on because they aren’t doing it alone anymore.
Warning: you will get frustrated with the teenagers. But, I teach teenagers and have lots of friends with teenage children - teenagers equal frustration. And teens that have suffered loss while they are trying to cope with learning who they are and their place in the world are entitled to have a few moments.
I will read this book again and to me that is the ultimate sign of loving a book and an author.
It's a pretty emotional book on dealing with betrayal and trying to cope with your new life after some serious changes. We meet Felicity whose husband leaves her for someone younger and now she is raising her children alone and then taking on your ex's child, she was good. Her husband former bestie Graham is now also trying to cope raising his daughter who is having issues dealing with her moms death. lots of feels my friends.
Rcvd and ARC at no cost to author..(netgalley) Voluntarily reviewed with my own thoughts and opinions
The downside to reading a recently published first book of a series? Having to wait now for the next book in the series! I loved this book. I don't even know what to say in this review without just gushing about how wonderful this book is.
Ok. So Felicity and her son have just watched her daughter graduate from high school. Her ex was a no show to the graduation ceremony, but for good reason – he's in the hospital after a car accident, which killed his girlfriend and injured his toddler son, Jack. And then he dies, but not before extracting a promise from Felicity to take and raise Jack as he has no other family.
That's the start of a book that's just packed with characters and plot lines, all integral to the overall story and seamlessly woven together. Sometimes when there is a large cast of characters it can be a little confusing in the beginning, but I never had that issue here as they were all so well written. The POV switches around also between the characters, but at the core of the story are Felicity and Graham. Felicity and her ex and Graham and his wife were good friends before Felicity's divorce, and before Graham's wife died. Graham is a doctor, and he and Felicity reconnect at the hospital, and quickly renew their old friendship, except this time that friendship begins to blossom into romance. But they both have busy lives and family issues getting in the way – Felicity preparing to take Jack home when he's released from the hospital, to her own son's dismay, and Graham dealing with his teenage wild child daughter who's been acting out since losing her mother.
Not necessarily a romance book, but if you like small town contemporary character driven family relationship stories with a couple of romances thrown in, this fits the bill. I hope there will be another Pecan Valley novel soon!
I need more!! The characters were so intriguing, fully fleshed out. I loved the many POVs. It was done so seamlessly that they just fit. The family dynamic of the Otto-Buchanans was so inviting, the troubles they went through so realistic.
And the sweet romances, my heart!! It feels full. There are 2 side romances that I just need more of very soon!
Heres hoping there's more coming from Pecan Valley!
Welcome to Pacan Valley indeed! 5/5 stars from me!!
Accidentally Family is a story that manages to revolve around many issues through multiple characters without sacrificing their individuality. They feel like real people in a real town and I usually don't cry when reading a book, but there is definitely a scene between two characters that comes together toward the end that made me tear up.
I rooted for Felicity and Graham the moment they set foot on the page. I felt deeply for the teenagers in the story who struggle with loss, self-worth, and new love. I fell in love with Felicity's sister and followed along with her secret problems as obsessively as if she was my own sister.
This novel is so beautifully written from the heart. It was heart wrenching but it was also hopeful. With a fictional world full of very real problems, Sasha Summers writes for the voices of those who feel alone. It was hard not to really feel like a part of this fractured family who find light in each other, and I'm glad I got the chance to read this book before it's release.
If you like Susan Wiggs novels like "Table for Five", you will love this book!
Accidentally Family is all about love and second chances. This book is emotional, a few pages in and I said out loud to myself “I hate this because it’s already making me cry” and I knew if the beginning was that emotional the whole story would just shatter me and it did. Once I started this book I really couldn’t put it down, I became so invested in the story and the lives of all the characters.
I loved that this story included point of views and inner thoughts of all the characters, there wasn’t just a sole focus on one or the other. Each character was going through something, from the adults to the children. Everyone was struggling with something in their life, a betrayal of some sort. Two families were broken, but found a way to work together, to have a second chance at love.
Accidentally Family is an emotional story that will have you crying, laughing, and falling in love with everyone involved. I completely fell in love with these characters, this blended family and the entire town of Pecan Valley. I’m hoping there is more of this group in the future, because this book was a MUST READ and I’m hooked.
This is a must read book. I literally couldn't put this book down. I was reading this book well into the night until my eyes no longer could stay open. I loved everything about this book. There is so much raw emotion in here that I was ugly crying a few times. This is a book that you have a tissue handy. Though parts of this book are going to rip your heart it's also such a beautiful story. The title fits this book perfectly. Felicity is such a strong character. What is asked of her not many could take in stride and carry on. Felicity's children go through a lot and you can see the struggle, but there is light at the end. There is a sense of hope for them throughout this book. Plus Graham and his daughter reconnect with each other and Felicity and her brood. There are so set ups for what I hope is future books in the series because I'm invested in Felicity's sister story. I would highly recommend reading this one, but I do say pick a day for uninterrupted reading time because you won't want to stop reading this one. This is my first book read by Sasha Summers and she had gained a new reader!
Accidentally Family is emotional, filled with hope/hate/pain, incredible characters, teenagers dealing with real life events and so much more!
You will fall in love with this Pecan Valley Novel. Each character carries pain in their own way.
Felicity..... Sight. I wish I was her! She's an incredible mom and puts her kids first, always. But has so much heartache and pain....but despite it all, she looks out for those in her care.
Then there's Graham. Has his own issues with his daughter, who thinks he hates her and wants her to go away....
I enjoyed the children so much! It was like living in an actual home-seeing/reading real-life like problems they are facing as an entire family. So very well written!!
If you're looking for a sweet read- trust me, you need to grab this book.
And I have to say, I hope there's more books in this series, because I'm not done reading/seeing about the secondary characters that I've come to love!
4 stars from me.
Thank you to Entangled publishing in giving me an early copy in exchange for an honest review.
Felicity has had many hits and they keep on coming. Her kids are her life. She lives in a town where her family gathers around them, but they are needy unto themselves. She wants to stop living in the past and move on.
Graham knows he must learn to live in the now. It is hard when you have a child who cannot seem to forigve you your foibles. With this new attraction to an old friend, can he discover what it means to make a new family?
This story had some great characters. My issue with this book was that they were all presernt and accounted for. The whole town, all the famlies, and it felt more than full it felt like a bucket overflowing. The story itself moved at a fast pace. It was just a struggle to keep up where maybe some of the storylines would have been best in their own book.
***This ARC copy was given by Netgalley and its publishers, in exchange for an honest review.
A sweet, slow-building romance with real-life issues and obstacles in the forefront. I do enjoy a small-town romance and Accidentally Family is an excellent choice for fans of the genre. I wholeheartedly enjoyed it.
Accidental Family by Sasha Summers a heart-warming five-star read. This was my first read by this author, but I really enjoyed the style of writing and will be going back to read more. This was such a multi-layered story; each character plays a different part of the story and adds a different aspect. Felicity could have been worn down and despaired, but she was not, she was so much more, anyone else in her situation would be. But she wasn’t the character that I felt most for in this story, that honour went to Nick, he left me in wonder, I am hopeful that we will hear more from this accidental family, as there is so much more I would love to hear.
Felicity becomes the guardian of her ex-husband's toddler while her own children are grappling with their father"s and stepmother's demise. Accidentally Family is a charming read. It's about healing, opening up for emotions, and embracing people who yearn to belong. My favorite scenes were between Owen and Honor. Those sizzled with intensity. Everyone found a place to park their heart which was immensely satisfying. Thanks to NetGalley and Entangled Publishing for the early read in exchange for my honest review.
This was such a beautiful story about hope, family, second chances, and new beginnings. Once this book took hold of me, it never let go. I was hooked from the first page, gave up going to bed at a normal hour just so I could read "one more page".
The setting felt well developed, the characters flawed and believable. The storyline was perfectly paced and enjoyable to read. There was no unnecessary drama, only heartbreaking moments that had me grabbing for my box of Kleenex. This was exactly what I needed and I hope others feel the same way.
This book will take you on emotional journey. You will cry, smile and feel emotions. Graham and Felicity both are single parents having gone through a traumatic loss and divorce. Spoiler free you will learn how these two things impacted each family member. You will smile and laugh at the cute things that occur. You will root for your favorite characters. There are surprises twists that will shock you!
*****I received an ARC from Netgallery for my honest review ************
An enjoyable and heart-tugging tale about the hard choices we make in love and life when children are involved, and how no matter how well you choose, the outcome is not always in your control. The realistic conflicts caught and held my attention until the end.
This was a beautiful, quick and easy read about family, surviving tragedy, and love. I particularly liked the fact that Felicity and Graham are older characters, which I'd forgotten about between requesting the book and reading it. The pacing is solid, the characters and dialogue are all believable, and I admit I did get teary-eyed on occasion. This story was moving on so many levels.
I saw a lot of myself in Felicity. She loves her children so much, and has to be strong for them always, even putting on a brave face when her world is crumbling around her. It's hard to know what she saw in her ex, but that's true of real life people, too. I liked the way she and her kids were tight, like the Three Musketeers. They supported each other through the good and bad stuff, and their struggles (particularly Nick's) were very believable and authentic.
I had a harder time connecting with Graham because of the distance between him and his daughter. I think it'd been about four years since his wife's passing, and I couldn't wrap my head around how badly their relationship had deteriorated. Logically I could sympathize with his situation, and the way he lost himself in his grief briefly. And perhaps some of it had to do with men in general handling emotions and relationships so differently than women, but that kind of emotional disconnect between parents and children is so far removed from my own relationship with my son that it's almost incomprehensible.
The friendship between Felicity and Graham was amazing! The way they were immediately there to support each other, in spite of the dissolution of their friendship prior to the beginning of the book, was fantastic. True friendship is like that. The friendship Felicity had with her sister was great, too. And that between Honor and her brother Nick. The support and love of family was strong in this story.
The issues I had with the story were little things. If Owen was in love with Honor for so many years, where did she get the idea that he was a player? I would have liked for her misconception (if that's truly what it was) to have been addressed. Also, the video from the nanny cam served to show Felicity's ex in a new light, but I'm not convinced the accident was truly random. Despite the revelation and then belief that things were well for the new family, the car didn't swerve into oncoming traffic for no reason. (I suspect a fight of some sort, but we may never know the truth.)
I hope this is the start of a series because there is more to the story of Felicity's sister, Charity, and the good sheriff. And I want to know more about Honor and Owen! (The epilogue was not set far enough in the future for my liking.) And I want to see more healing for Graham's daughter. And ... and ... and ...
Needless to say, Pecan Valley has captured my heart. This was my first read by this author, and I'm lucky because now I get to go back and read her previous books while waiting for her next new story. (Which really needs to be about Charity, pretty please.)
Here's my take on this story. Felicity is some sort of heiress, whose parents gave her their extremely large, 100-year-old home to live in after her husband leaves her for another, much younger woman. Who happens to be pregnant. She also has enough funds to completely renovate the house. There is a mention of her running a family business, a drugstore, but it is just a brief mention and we never see her go to work. Ever. Instead, she is the quintessential stay-at-home mommy of teenagers, both of whom are good kids. The kids handle the divorce differently. The daughter is resigned and is happy her mom is there for her. The son is an angry young man, albeit one who adores his mother and tries not to give her any grief. Like most teens.
The ex-husband is a complete jerk. We never really get to meet him so all we know about him is that since he's shacked up with the girlfriend and she has the baby, he pretty much blows off his first two kids and misses all the ball games, recitals and what have you that he'd been attending throughout their young lives. The day of his oldest daughter's high school graduation, he doesn't show up. Again. But this time he has a good excuse.
The ex, the girlfriend, and the baby were in a terrible car accident. The girlfriend dies, the baby has some broken bones and is in a coma, and the ex is being rushed to surgery. Before he goes, he asks Felicity to take the baby to raise. He's a doctor and he knows he is not going to make it.
Meanwhile, Felicity's sister Charity comes home. She has spent years in Europe as a tour guide, but she has an excellent reason for giving up that life and settling back in the tiny town of Pecan Valley, where she is gifted with a travel agency by a friend of her grandmother's who wants to retire. Not that she goes to work, either.
The male protagonist is Graham. He is also a doctor, and was partners with Felicity's ex. But when the ex went off the partnership ended. Meanwhile, Graham's wife died of cancer, leaving him desolate. His teenage daughter is very angry at him and their relationship is troubled, to say the least. But at his former partner's funeral, he remembers that they all used to be the best of friends. Felicity and Graham both need a friend now, but that friendship soon turns to more.
If you can get past logic and practicality and suspend your disbelief, the rest of the book is good. I liked the characters and enjoyed spending time with them. The ending is very rushed and every loose end is neatly tied up. If this is the first book of a series, my hunch is that Charity will be next and then Felicity's daughter. There is definite potential here and I am looking forward to more from this author.
A wonderful story of friendship, family, and love.
The story is told from six alternating points of view which seemed daunting at first. However, they all fit together pretty seamlessly and I think it was necessary for the reader to understand what everyone is going through.
The events of the plot are set in motion when Matt and his fiance Amber die in a car accident leaving behind their very young son. Matt was previously married to Felicity, but cheated on her with Amber. He and Felicity are parents to Nick and Honor who are dealing with anger and sadness over his actions. Charity, Felicity's sister has returned to town, too. Finally, Graham was Matt's partner in a doctor's office and he is dealing with rebuilding his relationship with his daughter Diana.
This was an emotional and at times heartbreaking read. I really felt for what each of the characters was going through in the aftermath of Matt's death. Even though there was sadness and grief, there was hope, happiness, and unconditional love too. The book also ends nicely, but does leave a number of story threads open. I am looking forward to the next book to see what happens with these characters.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing an ARC for an honest review.
this was ... not what i expected. It was suprisingly complex showing all facits of divorce and blending families. I really resonated with this book and saw me and my siblings in Felicity's kids, and while my mom wasn't as "too nice for her own good" as Felicity, i saw my mom in there as well. I can imagine it was hard to walk the line between sweet home town romance and the sort of .. grittier, I guess, second chance at love. but Sasha Summers walks that line, giving a sweet homtwon romance a depth that keeps a reader reading.
Accidentally Family is my first introduction to Sasha Summers, and what a wonderful introduction it was. As this was an enjoyable, touching, and sweet story. That evoked plenty of warm feelings, a few tears, and some feel good moments. And it was wonderfully well written, and plotted and I certainly felt Ms Summers was writing from the heart.
Would happily recommend.
