A great, quick read for anyone who wants some nuggets of wisdom from a popular figure in American cinema history. Great anecdotes and insights into John Wayne’s life that exemplify his values. My only issue with this book is the way it ended. The afterword by one of the Duke’s sons, Patrick, states that he himself was a successful father because his children went on to have successful careers. To me, that misses the entire point of the book. A successful life is not a life with a successful career, but a life that lives up to honorable values. Yes, I’m sure the Duke would be proud that his grandchildren worked hard to create successful careers, but the whole book makes it sound like he’s more interested in whether their lives are value-driven.
