This was an interesting story. The end came a bit hard with plot-twist over plot-twist with little explanation or substance to them, but nothing frustratingly bad. Of course as a lot of these romance light novels, the characters feel a bit shallow (looking at you Ruri), but once again nothing too bad or frustrating. It was an OK and light read.
The initial premise is interesting. Then, things fall into an Escherian mise en abyme and then just fall apart. Who knew file management and version control would be so difficult with quantum computing, eh?
I'm glad to have read this as a companion to the anime movie, but I did find myself procrastinating on picking it up each time as it felt a bit redundant.
There was one tiny detail in the book that changed how I thought of the ending, which I was glad for as it clarified something.
Unfortunately a few of the action scenes didn't hold up in text form and felt like they were reliant on the movie visuals to get across what was happening.
Overall, this is a really clever plot that kept me excited for the next twist, with an ethical/moral question at its heart that gave me something to think about.
It's difficult to put my full experience with this novel into the most precise words, but in the most short sweet words I can muster, it was an enjoyable read. Full disclosure, I have not seen the film this novel was based on, as any chance of a worldwide release was nipped in the bud in 2020—I can safely say that as a novel alone, it was good. I was more than surprised by the motives of the protagonist's mentor and how it subverted my own expectations. However, by the third act it started to wane down, like they had to shove in perhaps a half hour's worth of movie runtime for the very last chapter and the "big spectacle" did not translate well onto paper. One other nitpick is how lost I felt when the writing would go into the geographical locations and it took me out of immersing myself into the book with no prior knowledge—I've become a minor character in the book.
It’s very surface level, but I still had a good time with this. It’s an easy read and it’s nothing too complicated (which is both a pro and a con). I know this is a light novel but I wasn’t expecting how blatant the writing would be. That kinda took me out of the book at times, but I got used to it.
I wish the book explored the God Hand more in the first half, as I feel like the second half would’ve had a greater impact on me.
It’s decent. Nothing too out of the ordinary for stories like this but honestly I think I needed this. It was fun and it entertained me, which is good enough for me.
The story is unoriginal, but cute. The writing (or maybe just the translation) is borderline patronizing in its redundancy. It truly reads like an anime, so perhaps it was my mistake for not going straight to the source material. I expect that the manga would have been a better choice, but sometimes you’ve just gotta try out a different medium, am I right? Not this time though. Grab the manga or wait (possibly forever?) for the anime to come to streaming.
The book is good and all, the plot is amazing, and you feel like u can see everything that the author describes pretty well, but it got a bit confusing in the end of the book were some perspectives where I got confused who is talking and what is happening, otherwise I would recommend reading it
While I enjoy books and reading (obviously), reading about a character that does this and not much else makes for a very slow reading experience. The premise was intriguing enough, but the characters were quite flat and the two MCs lacked any real connection. It made it difficult to believe that he went through 'all that' to get to be with her again. While I could see how this story would work as a film/series, it didn't have the depth to work as a novel.
Nothing really new here — when you watch the movie, then you've read the book. A bit disappointed that it didn't clarify any questions or vague concepts in the movie. It's really just a straight up adaptation of the movie into a book. It only added a few glimpses of Naomi's inner thoughts but these were implicitly shown in the movie already. So, yup, nothing really value adding here.
P.S. the story is really nice and intriguing even in book form so still rating it a 3
I like how it starts as seemingly a slice of life, before it moves quickly to settle somewhere at the boundary between science fiction and fantasy. Details of how things happen are rather messy and not too convincing, however - you just have to accept so many things without thinking too much on them as the story moves forward.
Tbh I didn’t really like it much like I think the concept and thought of the story was nice and pretty cool but I kind of had no interest towards the ending of the book and I forced myself to finish it because I was almost done. The first half of the book was really nice and I enjoyed reading it but the other half not so good. Overall 3 stars.
