Reading this autobiography again after several years. I missed the magic that i felt the last time. Several texts of this book didn't age well.

ഒരുപക്ഷേ ഇന്നത്തെ തലമുറയ്ക്ക് ഗോഡ് ഫാദർ സിനിമയിലെ അഞ്ഞൂറാൻ പറഞ്ഞാൽ ആവും എൻ എൻ പിള്ള എന്ന ഇദ്ദേഹത്തെ മനസ്സിലാകുക. സിനിമാനടൻ വിജയരാഘവൻ അച്ഛനാണ് ഇദ്ദേഹം. ഒരുകാലത്ത് കേരളത്തിലെ  സാംസ്‌കാരിക-സാമൂഹിക ഭൂമികയില്‍ കോളിളക്കം സൃഷ്ടിച്ച നാടകങ്ങൾ രചിച്ചതാണ് ഇദ്ദേഹം. ഈ ആത്മകഥ ഒരിടത്തും നമ്മളെ മുഷിപ്പിക്കുന്നില്ല. ഒരു വ്യക്തിയുടെ ജീവിതം എന്നതിലുപരി ഒരു കാലഘട്ടം മുഴുവൻ വായനക്കാർക്ക് മുമ്പിൽ അനാവൃതമാകുന്നു. ഐ എൻ എയും സുഭാഷ് ചന്ദ്ര ബോസും മലയയും സിംഗപ്പൂരും എല്ലാം നമ്മൾ അടുത്തറിയുന്നു. സദാചാരകാപട്യങ്ങളെ വലിച്ചെറിഞ്ഞ്, മനുഷ്യാന്തസ്സിന്റെ ശക്തിയോടെ സ്വന്തം ജീവിതത്തെ കോരിത്തരിപ്പിക്കുന്ന ഒരു നാടകമെന്നപോലെ പകര്‍ത്തുന്നു. നിസ്സംശയമായും ഭാഷയിലുണ്ടായ ഏറ്റവും ധീരവും സത്യസന്ധവുമായ ആത്മകഥയാണിത്.

മലയാളികളുടെ സാംസ്‌കാരിക-സാമൂഹിക ഭൂമികയില്‍ കോളിളക്കം സൃഷ്ടിച്ച തന്റെ നാടകങ്ങളെപ്പോലെ തന്നെ, ആഖ്യാനമന്ത്രവാദത്തിന്റെ ചങ്ങലയില്‍ നമ്മെ തളച്ചിടുന്ന രചനയാണ് എന്‍.എന്‍. പിള്ളയുടെ "ഞാന്‍".
അവിസ്മരണീയരായ കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളും പിടിച്ചുകുലുക്കുന്ന സംഭവവികാസങ്ങളും മധുരമനോഹരങ്ങളായ വൈകാരിക മുഹൂര്‍ത്തങ്ങളും യുദ്ധത്തിന്റെയും കൂട്ടക്കൊലയുടെയും പലായനത്തിന്റെയും ഭീകരനിമിഷങ്ങളും ഒന്നിച്ചുചേരുന്ന ഈ ആത്മകഥ മലയാളത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും മികച്ച സാഹിത്യകൃതികളുടെ ഒന്നാംനിരയില്‍ സ്ഥാനം പിടിക്കുന്നു.

I think there is that one book for everyone which they keep revisiting time and again. For me it is "NJAN", the autobiography of N N Pillai. This is the 3rd time I leaped into the life of N N Pillai. People may ask what is so great about the life of a man who is an important figure in Kerala theatre. But NJAN is not about that period, it covers the adventurous life of a young man who went abroad in search of a bright future and fell headfirst into the chaos of second world war. NJAN captures in details the perils Pillai went throughout in Malaya( now Malaysia) and his time in INA. The writing is engaging to the core and keeps you hooked to the happenings. As the name states, it can be seen as a coming of age story for a man and what made him the human he was.
Heard there were talks of making this into a movie, I hope they don't do it and destroy Njan.
I am sure, I will read it again.
