Bayou Dreaming

Rate this book
New York Times bestselling author Lexi Blake’s heartfelt contemporary romance set in Louisiana's Butterfly Bayou.

Roxanne King left the big city looking for a simpler life, but after years of proving herself on a SWAT team in New York City, being deputy in a sleepy Louisiana parish is something of an adjustment. She's settling in, but she knows she made some mistakes in the beginning--Zep Guidry being the worst of them. Zep drifts through life on his looks and Cajun charm. Roxie learned the hard way he's not for her.

Zep is a man who knows what he wants, and what he wants is Roxie. He's just not sure how to get her. They spent one hot night together a year before and now all the lovely deputy seems interested in doing to him is arresting him. He's not used to a woman he can't charm, but Roxie seems immune. He's determined to win her back by any means necessary. Including becoming the kind of man she desires.

And when Roxie's past comes calling, it might be the opportunity Zep needs to show Roxie that the town bad boy might just be the man of her dreams.

This is a romance/chick-lit/women's fiction, and this book is the 3rd book in the Butterfly Bayou series. This is the first book I have read in this series, but I have fall totally in love with this series. I have also love the small town this book takes place in and all the people/characters in this cute little Southern Small town. I love that Zep is what everyone thinks is a bad big, but he really just loves to safe animals and care for everyone else. Zep the bad boy falls in love with the new women cop. I love how the characters talks to each other, and I loved all the Southern parts of this book. I was kindly provided an e-copy of this book by the publisher (Berkley) or author (Lexi Blake) via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review about how I feel about this book, and I want to send a big Thank you to them for that.

It's official. I am in love with this town and the people in it. I love how the author has tackled all the quirks you get with a small town. The gossiping where everyone knows every bit of your business, except it may be an alternate version of what really happened. The few town folks that are just plain crazy because let's face it, every town has those people. But most of all, the way a small town comes to gather to support each other. I love it!

Zep was such a flippant character in the previous book. I loved getting to truly know him as a person. He turned out to be one of my favorite "playboy" types of heroes. Roxie was also awesome. She was just tough enough to admire without it being too much. I liked seeing her transformation. She lost a lot of that aloofness from being from a big city and became softer and more approachable person in this small town environment.

Since all this characters are in each book, I've come to love them all and want more. Cain is such an interesting character to me even though he has such a small role in each book. I hope the author brings him front and center for his own. Either way, I will read about as many of these Bayou citizens the author wants to write about.

Yes! This series keeps getting better and better. I LOVED Roxie and Zep from the very first book and I’m thrilled that we have finally gotten their story.

Deputy Roxanne King is fairly new to Papillon (Butterfly Bayou) Louisiana upon her arrival a little over a year ago she had a one night stand with the small town's playboy, Zep Guidry, only to realize she had feelings for him. What's the best way to combat those useless feelings? Arrest him every chance you get...LOL

I can’t remember the last Lexi Blake book I read, so I decided that it was time to try her books out. BAYOU DREAMING is book three in the Butterfly Bayou series and although I haven’t read the other books, I felt like I could easily submerge myself in this world.

I will say that I had a little bit of difficulty getting into the characters a bit. I didn’t hate them, but they also didn’t completely win me over like I was expecting. I don’t know if I was expecting more, but I still do enjoy Blake’s writing style. It’s very free-flowing and simple, making it easy to read. I think if you’re in the mood for a simple, refreshing read, then this might be a good book to read. It definitely calmed me when I felt like I needed an escape from reality.

I swear watching these two over the last two books was a riot, I knew once we had their story it would be a good one and it really was beyond what I had expected. There is so much that we didn't know about either of them and it really shed a lot of light on the way they were. I loved the chemistry they had together. There is a bit of angst but a lot of steam in this read. This is definitely my favorite book in the series to date.

If you enjoy small town romances, the fake relationship trope, or second chance romances I would recommend this book to you.

Happy Reading!!!

I am really enjoying this series! The characters are great and I want them to get their happy ending. This one had Zep and Roxie both deserved a happy ending and I loved 'watching' it happen! Well narrated by Jessica Almasy.

This is the third installment in the Butterfly Bayou series and tells the story of Zep Guidry and Roxanne King. While most of Lexi’s books are about finding-or making-a family, this one is about finding your place in the world. When Roxanne King first came to Papillion, La, she intended it to be a temporary stop until she could go back to her rightful place on the New York City Police Department-or some other big city department. But soon the people of the Parish begin to grow on her, especially Zep Guidry. On the surface, Zep is the town bad boy, not holding a full-time job, but doing all kinds of odd jobs to keep afloat. He still lives with his mother, and dates the single women in town without discrimination. That all changes when he meets Roxy, but he doesn’t believe he’s good enough for the sexy cop.

What Roxy comes to realize is that Zep’s laid-back manner covers up a soul that is dedicated to helping others. He doesn’t have a steady job because he’s been helping raise his sister’s little boy. His love of animals comes through when he deals with a stray puppy, and Roxy finds herself falling for him. But when the opportunity arises to go back to her old job comes up, will she chose to leave Zep or has he gained enough hold on her heart to keep her in Papillion?

This is a fun, sexy read, with a hero who only needs to recognize his own worth and a heroine who acknowledges that her ambition may not be the path to happiness. A delight as are all the Butterfly Bayou books.

Oh my freaking god. Clutching my pearls here and practicing my Lousiana drawl :D
I loved the previous two books in this series, but this one smashed right through my expectations and lifted them indefinitely higher than ever.
Zep and Roxi were teased in the previous books and I thought this would be clean cut: the charmer charmes the pants of his girl off. Easy, right?
It was NOT easy. Zep is so much more than "just" charming. He was EVERYTHING. I loved to discover the different layers of his character, loved to see him being completely different than I expected and I adored the fact that he basically gave everything up for his family. Damn I cried so much during all of these revelations and during getting to know Zep better. Seriously. I cried and it was awesome!
I can totally recommend reading this book as standalone, but I think you can appreciate everything better if you read at least Seraphina's book before.

Reviewed for Romancing the Readers Blog: http://www.romancingthereaders.com/20...

I love those books that have characters you can't wait to read about. That's how it was for me with Zep. I just knew, or should say, hoped there was more to him than what we've been shown in the two prior books.

I was so right! He's such a complex character with many layers. You really don't get him until he shares with us who he really is. I really felt sorry for him and wanted to hit anyone who was mean to him. And let me tell you so many people he knew didn't bother to look underneath what he showed the world, not even his family.

I also liked Roxanne and didn't mind how she kept throwing Zep in jail. I knew for her it was more like flirting. My only issue with her is that she couldn't see what she really wanted in life. She talks about her grandfather a lot and how he was on the job but doesn't notice that it's how she is right now in this job.

Together they work. Zep needs someone to believe in him and push him when he tries to hide behind his carefree attitude. Roxanne needs someone how helps her have a little fun. She forgets to do that.

I will say Roxanne's family is a little hard to take. At times I wanted to reach inside the book and slap them upside the head. The way they treated Roxanne is horrible. They might love and care about her but have trouble thinking about her first. They made me like her more.

The story ends well and made me happy. I can't wait to see what's next in this series. I've really been enjoying it.

I was given a copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.

This is such a fun read. Papillon’s notorious bad boy Zep Guidry and transplanted New York cop Roxie are thrown together when the Sheriff's department sends them to investigate a string of werewolf sightings. As Roxie slowly finds her place in a town that seems completely crazy, she also starts to see Zep in a whole new light.

Papillon is at its absolute best in this third book. Between the eccentric characters, the Cajun superstitions, the bizarre town hall meeting and wonderful warmth of the community, the town itself is almost the main character in this story. I fell in love with Papillon alongside Roxie.

Roxie’s transition from big city New York to small town Louisiana isn’t an easy one and a messy divorce doesn’t make it easier. Like the other books in this series, this one is almost more about Roxie’s journey than it is a romance. I love the growth we see in Roxie in this book and I love the unexpected sense of belonging she finds.

Like the previous books, female relationships are at the heart of this story. Unlike the previous books, this one also belongs to Zep. At the start of the story, he is just as lost as Roxie and I love how he slowly becomes more aware of himself. As much as Roxie has to adjust as an outsider, Zep has to find his place as an adult in a town that still sees him as an irresponsible boy. I love that Roxie and Zep grow together, lending each other strength and insights.

I really love this series and I can’t wait for the next book.

I usually know what I'm getting with Blake, so while I liked Roxie and Zep for the most part, this book being such a big miss for me was an unpleasant surprise. Some of this was just bad match of reader to book. Roxie's family just didn't make sense, nor did any of the discussion of the NYPD (for example, this book seems to think it's standard practice for cops in NYC to actually live in the city; I promise you, it is not). The career stuff/giving up her dream job wasn't for me, either. I know that's standard practice for small town romances, but something about the way this one was handled bugged me more than usual. (And it's not like I'm usually unbothered by it, either!!)

But the real issue here was the family stuff. Hit on some personal triggers, then was magically resolved with one (1) conversation.

Daisy was good though. More dogs, less family nonsense please.

Another great addition to the series and Jessica Almasy has done yet another outstanding job of narrating this story! Her ability with accents is pretty amazing, which goes alongside her ability to bring the characters to life. Will be looking forward to listening to more of her narration works.

Just realised that Remy & Lisa's story (Remy is the older Guidry brother) is told in Close Cover

Loved Zep! It's refreshing to read a Hero who is the first to fall in love, who does all the chasing with long term goals of marriage and family in mind, a man that's not just lusting after the h but someone who is genuinely in love and ready to commit to his own HEA.

It took a little longer for me to warm up to Roxie. She was a little too judgmental of Zep and her misconceptions lasted longer than I would have liked. She was stubborn and standoffish which isn't a vibe I normally get from heroines in romance but after meeting her family and better understanding how they shaped the way she sees success and professionalism it was easier to sympathize with her. Her brother and his fiancé weren't bad and her mom does later redeem her self a little. Her father though . . . what a douche! The way he sided with her ex and then later "talked" with Zep, ugh!!!! What an A$$ hat of a man. Instantly disliked him.

Being the 3rd in the series, this does have a few side characters/couples from the previous books but they were all lightly introduced and there weren't any large information dumps to detract from the main couple/story.

Roxie and Zep have a really deep connection when they first meet but Roxie has some hang ups and she doesn't trust herself with Zep. When a white lie involving a fake boyfriend to keep her meddling mom off her back leads to Zep playing said fake boyfriend for a week, they both see it as a chance to finally explore that connection that hasn't waned over the last year.

But when they find themselves exploring their explosive chemistry and really getting to know the real person under their erroneous first impressions, they start to realize that they just might be perfect for each other after all.

But will their connection be enough to make a lasting relationship when they both want different things out of life.

Roxie want's to go back to a major city and pursue her career in law enforcement, something a small town like Papillon can't give her. Coming from a long line of police officers, she feels the pressure to live up to certain expectations. She's still trying to live up to her parents idea of the perfect daughter. Even at the cost of her own happiness.

Zep had to sacrifice his own dreams to help his teenage sister with an unplanned pregnancy and provide support for his widowed mother, all while his oldest brother was in the Navy. He somehow becomes the town bad boy with a reputation for the ladies (more rumor than actual fact) and an all around lazy, go with the flow, fun guy vibe that no one really takes seriously. At first this impression doesn't bother him but when he meets Roxie and he realizes she sees him like everyone else, he starts to change his ways in the hopes she'll see the real him.

There were so many moments where Zep tugged at my heartstrings. He was such a sensitive guy and it was hard to see how the town took him for granted and colored even his own impression of himself.

Like I said, I love Zep, he was a great character that maybe deserved better than wishy -washy Roxie but I rooted for them anyways and I loved that Roxie finally does stand up for herself with her mother. Her realization that dreams, like people, change and what might be one person's idea of success isn't the same for everyone and accepting that it's okay was a great step forward for her. As long as you're happy doing what you do, that's the real success in life. Surrounding yourself with family and friends that care and support you in the good and the bad times were lessons Roxie came to appreciate towards the end.

The smexy times are more on the DL here. Not overly description or long. They had a more fade to black vibe without actually fading to black . . . does that make any sense?!

Overall a good read. I would recommended if you need a cinnamon roll Hero and don't mind mushy inner dialogues, a hard to read h and small town eccentrics.

BAYOU DREAMING is the third instalment in Lexi Blake’s contemporary, adult BUTTERFLY BAYOU erotic, romance series. This is former NYPD police officer Roxanne King, and Zephirin ‘ Zep’ Guidry’s story line. BAYOU DREAMING can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information for the previous instalments is revealed where necessary.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Roxanne and Zep) BAYOU DREAMING follows the building romance and relationship between former NYPD police officer Roxanne King, and Zephirin ‘ Zep’ Guidry. Four years earlier police officer Roxanne King’s life imploded when she discovered complaints about sexual harassment had been ignored and dismissed by the old boys club in the department, a department where her now ex-husband and father worked. Walking away from a job that she loved, and a marriage that was quickly grinding to a halt, Roxanne King landed a job as a deputy in Papillon, Louisiana. But a one night stand with local bad boy Zep Guidry never amounted to fruition until several reports of strange incidences with a mythological creature found Roxanne and Zep working together following an accident that left our heroine with a mild concussion. The appearance of Roxanne’s family added to fuel to Roxanne’s already crazy life, an appearance that pulled Zep into a pretend romantic relationship with Roxanne King. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Roxanne and Zep, and the potential fall-out when Roxanne is offered a job she cannot refuse.

The Louisiana Parish of Papillon has its’ fair share of mythologies but the most recent ‘sighting’ of a werewolf type rougarou, has Roxanne shaking her head at the stories and phone calls to the local PD but Roxanne’s problems only escalate when her family visits Papillon Louisiana, a visit meant to encourage our heroine to finally come home.

The relationship between Roxanne and Zep is one of immediate attraction but Zep’s bad boy reputation precedes his introduction to our story line heroine, a reputation predicated on history, rumors, gossip and lies. Meeting Roxanne King gave Zep a hope for a future but Roxanne had no plans to remain in Papillon long term, and with it went the hopes of a man who was quickly falling in love. The $ex scenes are intimate, erotic and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

There is a large ensemble cast of colorful secondary and supporting characters including Sheriff Armie La Vigne, and practical nurse Lila Daley (Butterfly Bayou 1), Lisa and Remy Guidry, deputy Major, Harry and Seraphins ( Bayou Baby 2), Sera and Zep’s mother Delphine Guidry. We are introduced to Roxanne’s parents who area infuriating, stubborn and disappointing , her brother Brian and his fiancé Shawna, and her ex-husband Joel Nelson, as well as several townsfolk in Papillon Louisiana.

BAYOU DREAMING is a story of family, friendships, betrayal and loss. The premise is entertaining and engaging; the romance is captivating and decadent; the characters are colorful, dynamic, and spirited.

This is the third book in the Butterfly Bayou series and I continue to enjoy these romances set in a small town. Although this is a series, each book features a different couple so they can be read as standalone stories. There are recurring characters so reading ahead you will come across spoilers for the earlier books if you have not read them. Roxanne King was the only female member of the SWAT team in her New York precinct. She was subject to sexual harassment from her boss, but no one wanted to hear that. Her husband is the PR guy and he takes it upon himself to have her transferred, as he does not want any of it to come back on him. She quits and decides to move to New Orleans. She gest a job in a sleepy parish and besides a one night stand, a mistake in her mind, she keeps pretty much to herself. Her one night stand, Zep Guidry has other plans for Roxanne, because he can't get her out of his mind.

This was another great romance by Lexi Blake. I enjoy the setting of these stories. Even though it is a small town, the police are kept hopping. I enjoy the cajun culture and the small town atmosphere. There are just enough quirky characters to make this a great little parish to set these stories. Roxanne is a strong person and knows what she wants. She also won't put up with women being treated as second class citizens. When she left New York, she left her family behind as well. They were not happy with her decision to quit the NYPD or to leave her husband, so she lies to them and tells them she is in a relationship. When they come to town for her birthday, she asks Zep to be her pretend boyfriend. I loved how they were together and their slow burn romance. Roxanne's mother is a hoot. She wants what is best for Roxanne, she just doesn't realize that what she wants is not what Roxanne wants. The males in her NY life were not my favourite characters, and I can see why she left. Zep is a sweetie. He has had a tough life, giving up his own dreams for his family. He is a playboy, until he realizes what he wants out of life. I really enjoyed watching him change and begin to realize his dreams. I love how animals are portrayed in the book and that they play such an important role in the story. With the romance, animals, culture, friendship, community and family, I love my trips to Butterfly Bayou and look forward to checking in with the wonderful characters I have met in the next book in this series. Jessica Almasy narrates this series and does a great job. I enjoy the voices she gives the various characters, and the accents she uses. She used her tone, inflection and emotion to make this story come alive for me.

4.5 Stars for Bayou Dreaming ( Butterfly Bayou, #3)
This is the third book in the Butterfly Bayou Series but I do believe it can be read and enjoyed as a stand-alone , if you love small town romance this book and this series should definitely be on your must read list. I love my visits to Papillion and I was excited to be returning and getting Zephirin Guidry and Roxanne King’s story and this book was everything I expected and more.
Zep has a gift, he loves working and dealing with animals and they seem to respond to him but a promising veterinarian career was cut short when he gave it all up to help his family....
Roxanne is a former New York SWAT team member and when her marriage feel apart she heads to the hills or should I say Papillion where she takes a job as the deputy in the small town.
A series based in a quirky small town with wonderful characters, great plots and even a alligator named Otis wondering around was always going to be a fun, entertaining read but this author has a knack she brings her stories to life with her wonderful descriptions and her witty tales. I loved this book, I laughed, I smiled and at times I wanted to bang Roxanne and Zep’s heads together, this is a series I highly recommend because I can’t get enough of the residents of Papillion, South Louisiana.

I am so in love with this town. It just keeps getting better and better. As always Lexi Blake gives us a town and people full of quirks that only she manages to write so well. She creates a place we long to visit or live in.

I admit that I wasn't too sure about Zep because he was just so bland in the previous book to me. However, getting to know him was much better than I thought he would be. I mean there really couldn't be a better character to get arrested as much by the woman who has feelings for him.

Only in the town of Papillon (Butterfly Bayou) Louisiana could deputy Roxanne King get away with arresting someone as much as she does Zep. After a one night stand she realizes just how much she has feelings for him so she does what she can to kill those feelings.

This is one of those series that no matter how much I tell you it is great you have to read it for yourself to grasp all of the joy and greatness that is Lexi Blake.

Needing a fresh start both personally and professionally Roxanne has created a new life for herself in Papillon as a deputy. She spent one unforgettable evening with Zep but since then she has kept her distance except when it comes to enforcing the law where he is often on the receiving end of her wrath.

Zep has a reputation for being fun and having a way with women. Although this may have enabled him to spend one night with Roxanne he wants more, and she has been unable to see past his reputation to the man. When he and Roxanne find themselves working together they may just find that they are better as teammates rather than adversaries.

Zep is the perfect combination of sweet and swoony as he helps Roxanne help from her past and realize what direction she wants her future to take and who she wants by her side when she does.

Roxanne King left New York with a marriage that didn't work and a job where she was unable to put up with harassment any longer.
She had been on a Swat team. Which was her dream job.
But after the divorce her husband fixes it so she can't get a job in any big city police force, so she ends up in a small town in Louisiana.
She has been there for a few years and has noticed Zep Guidry a handsome guy locally but he seems to be a guy with no real job prospects and a charming player.
However, Roxanne needs some help and he steps in. She realizes there is more to him than the appearances.
Meanwhile, her family wants her to go back to New York and is pushing hard. Is that where she wants to go now? Or maybe she can make more of a difference right where she is?
And the attraction to Zip might be worth following up on.

~~I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads ~~

This is the third book in the series - and I would recommend that you read them in order, as you would have a better understanding of the characters, and would know of the background to these two fun individuals, particularly Zep. Or would you? As actually we learn a whole load more about the truth behind Zep.

I really did enjoy learning more about the wayward player of Butterfly Bayou, and once again one is reminded that the opinions held of others is often tarnished by a lack of actual knowledge. As the layers of masks are unpeeled on Zep's truth we get to understand far better what type of man he really is - and thankfully Roxanne also finds that her instinctual attraction to him is not in fact misplaced at all.

I loved watching these two very likeable people find out that they absolutely deserved their own happiness and that they were responsible for ensuring it, as their families may not be the most genuine at looking out for their interests. A very enjoyable and fun story ... those old ladies never fail to amuse and cause trouble alongside the burgeoning romances that these books deliver.

Roxanne and Zep we know from the books before and couldn't wait to see what these two were up too. Zep is the bad boy but in truth not at all, he helps his family over himself all the time. Roxanne moved down to Louisiana for a break from NYC after her ex-husband and father don't help her out. They had a one-night stand but there is still something between them they are both fighting. That is until her parents come and she has to think quick.

This is my favorite book so far in this series. Loved having the family members and side characters we had from the previous books.

Roxanne has slowly made a place for herself in the sleepy little town of Butterfly Bayou. After losing her dream job in New York she retreated to Louisiana to lick her wounds and regain the confidence that she had lost.

The only fly in the ointment is Zep. Zep’s reputation for playing fast and loose with the ladies is well known. Their one night together was just that yet Zep can’t seem to get the message.

When the sheriff pairs them together on a work assignment Roxanne begins to see a side of Zep that he keeps hidden. He doesn’t complain about the fact that he had to put off his dream of college to help his family nor about how people see him as a good time guy, never holding down a real job.

I really enjoyed this book the development of the characters. There was no rush to get to the romance but rather a slow burn that made the story more relatable.

I’m rather fond of Butterfly Bayou and can’t wait for the next book in the series.

Zep appears to be a happy go lucky guy just getting by and riding on his very good looks. Most people are unaware of the sacrifices he has made for his family. Roxanne moved to the bayou after her marriage fell apart. After a one night stand, Roxanne pushes him away but keeps arresting him to be close. When her family decides to come visit, she enlists Zep’s assistance to pretend to be her boyfriend. It is such a sweet story that warms the heart and feels magical. This whole series is endearing and full of hope!

I loved this so hard and I’m agonizing over the fact that I don’t get to go back to Papillon until July! Zep was MY FAVORITE! So sweet and loving and self-sacrificing … he’s my fave male protagonist in a while. I love this series and Bayou Dreaming is the best book in a series that just keeps getting better and better. 5 out of 5 wine glasses.

Bayou Dreaming by Lexi Blake is the third book in her Butterfly Bayou series. Ms. Blake has created a unique little town in Papillon, Louisiana. The residents are warm, caring, a little nosy and quite a bit quirky. The heroine of this story, Roxanne King, is a deputy sheriff there. She ended up in Papillon after events at her NYPD job led her to quit and divorce her high-ranking NYPD husband. Zep Guidry has always been known as the "bad boy" of Papillon. Sometimes opposites attract and in this case the attraction between Roxanne and Zep is magnetic. This storyline was very entertaining. I smiled and chuckled the whole time I was reading the book. Butterfly Bayou is a fantastic series and this book was a delightful read!
