There is not much to be said about this book. Yes, there were one or two interesting facts but it was primarily recitation of boring facts strung together. The book is neither a textbook nor a book to read for fun. Took me nine days to plow through and got almost nothing worthwhile for the time.

There is some far fetched action in this book and not just from the dogs. I found the connections Alizart was making were stretched to the limit. There were some interesting facts and tidbits of information to be had but the progress of the book was not one of smooth transitions.

In their eyes,the dog was not a denatured animal but an unclassifiable or, rather, a transclass one - an animal that was not subject to the separations that limit ordinary human beings. It was to be treated with great respect, like the Hijra, Indian transgender people, because, since it knew the path that ran from one cosmic polarity to another, in some sense the dog watched over the balance of the world. Many grieving owners feel as if they have lost a child, but in my own experience it has felt more like being orphaned, as if it were not a child I had lost, but a parent. MARK ALIZARD consacre un petit livre aux chiens. Curieuse idée car le chien a l’image d’un animal tout ce qu’il y a de plus banal. Le chien de la famille qui ne quitte pas son maître du regard, qui le suit partout. Et pourtant vous verrez en lisant ce livre que le chien est plus complexe qu’il n’y paraît et que le destin de l’homme est intimement lié à celui de son plus fidèle compagnon.

Pour nous en convaincre, l’auteur fait preuve d’une érudition impressionnante et va puiser dans tous les domaines: mythologie, religion, histoire, philosophie, science et culture populaire – je dois oublier certains domaines. Il mixe et lie tout cela avec beaucoup de talent, manipule les concepts et enchaîne les démonstrations avec une incroyable facilité. Il est si convaincant que l’on se met à réfléchir et à voir les choses autrement. A tel point que l’on finit par le croire sur parole même si certaines conclusions semblent un peu tirées par les cheveux.

Mais ne boudons pas notre plaisir, c’est un régal de suivre l’auteur comme un bon toutou dans toutes ces pérégrinations et de refermer le livre ébloui, les yeux larmoyants implorant une suite.

Pour les amateurs de philosophie / mythologie canine je conseille également la lecture de Socrate le demi-chien.

początek zapowiadał się fajnie, ale potem ta książka niestety poważnie odkleja się od rzeczywistości. oczekiwałam trochę bardziej pogłębionej analizy i mniej twierdzeń ad hoc. dodaję dodatkową gwiazdkę za piękną oprawę graficzną polskiego wydania

Perros y filosofía. En este libro nos encontramos con cuestionamientos como: ¿cuál es la historia de los perros?¿cuál es la relación de los perros con la sociedad a lo largo de la historia de la humanidad?

Con ejemplos concretos de distintos momentos/personas que marcaron la historia, el autor evidencia como el perro se fue adaptando y sobreviviendo a absolutamente todo. También nos encontramos con una mirada sobre la posición social de los perros ¿por qué son inferiores?¿ser inferiores según quién?¿por qué decir perro en muchos países es un insulto?

Como todo libro de filosofía (por más que el autor no considere a este como uno de ellos) puede ser pesado de momentos. Sin embargo, no deja de ser un libro para entender más sobre los perros. ¡Amo los perros y le escribo a mi compañera de vida! nunca esta de más leer sobre ellos.

Su manera de empezar me gusto mucho, parafraseando de una manera muy mala, dice algo como: ¡los perros dominaran el mundo!

Mark Alizart is a journalist, philosopher and dog owner. In this peculiar book (translated from French by Robin MacKay) he looks at the evolution of the dog and its representation through mythology and religion with some musing on why women are compared to bitches. There’s interesting material here but its overt intellectualism is quite alienating and I’m not sure it has the heart or enthusiasm to appeal to average dog lovers.

Subidas y bajadas de nivel inesperadas, algunos pasajes buenos y más que nada gana valor por sus citas. Hacia el final se convierte solo en un ejercicio intelectual de interpretaciones dudosas.

"Si consideramos que el perro fue el otro de este "hombre" que todavía no estaba presente a sí mismo, ¿no hay que decir acaso, una vez más, y de manera más fiel al pensamiento de Darwin, que lo realmente decisivo que el perro ha hecho, que su misterio, es justamente haber inventado a su amo?"

Quiéranlo ellos o no, los perros están hechos de la misma arcilla social que los humanos. A pesar del estereotipo del "imbécil feliz" que les atribuímos (y cuyo origen Alizart le atribuye a Lutero, notable dog person) los perros pueden rehuir y hasta rechazar el llamado social, precisamente por estar constituídos por él. Alizart y Haraway advierten que la domesticación no es algo que le hicimos a los perros, sino un proceso de coevolución que alteró a las dos especies. La sociabilidad humana no fue lo mismo después del contacto con esta especie de compañía.

Es una lástima que este diálogo con Haraway, lo más interesante y más parecido a una tesis, apenas se sostenga por unas pocas páginas. El resto del libro consiste en datos sueltos y en interpretaciones bastante caprichosas de mitos de todo el mundo, en las que las asociaciones con el tema son débiles o especulativas.
