Supply chain management: The management of the chain of supplies that delivers all those things you desire.
The food on your plate did not get there on accident; it is there because of a supply chain. The device you are reading this on also made its way to you as the product of a supply chain. As long as humans desire products and services, supply chain management will be a vital function for any company interested in satisfying customers effectively and efficiently.
This textbook walks you through the key terms and topics needed to understand the language of supply chain management in the corporate environment. Primary topics covered include procurement, inventory management, logistics, operations, supply chain integration, waiting line management, global supply chain management, social responsibility, business processes, project management, measuring performance, and quality management.
I had the pleasure of taking an SCM 300 class from the author of this book last semester (no, we weren’t gouged on the book price) and I enjoyed reading it. Eddie knows his stuff—it showed in his lectures and it shows in this book. It provides a general overview of supply chain management that I think even non-business majors would find interesting, and it has given me a lot to consider as I focus on my Finance degree—which is the point of having the course be required for all business majors. I have to dock the book one star for some unfortunate type-face inconsistencies in the e-book that prevent it from being perfect, but the content itself is 5-stars and worth a read for anyone looking for a textbook that will give introductory exposure to the language and world of supply chain management.
