Tina's old life ended the day she discovered her parents, murdered.
Her new life began the day she walked into Tell's office, looking for someone who could do something about it.
Tina isn't sure if Tell is weird for a detective, or if detectives are just weird people, but he talks like he may be the one who can figure out who killed her parents and why, and Tina is willing to put up with a lot of weird to get answers.
The answers that she's going to get aren't anything like what she would have expected, and she's about to find out that the world is a lot bigger, a lot darker, and a lot less scientific than she's spent her whole life believing.
The book seemed quite interesting right at the start, but the author takes a long time to get anywhere significant and seems to love going over the same ground time and time again. Also Tina’s prevaricating and indecisiveness early in the book soon became annoying. Once the story gets going it appears to be a mystery about who killed Tina's parents, but for the first half it is really about who is 'Tell'. Again the author manages to make Tina annoying with her constant internal debates and keeps the ’mystery’ going way past it being interesting.
Unfortunately although the second half is better, I had lost interest in the original mystery and the Vampires were a bit tedious. The author likes being evasive and mysterious with just about everything, to the point where it doesn’t make sense.
I would normally read a book like this in a day, but this took me four days, which shows how difficult I found it to get involved with this story.
Great first book in a series. Tina's parents have been murdered, and after six weeks with no progress from the lead detective, her impatience has spiked.
Turning to a private detective, she immediately has regrets upon seeing his office. It's a mess. He's a mess. But he's smart, and over-confident, and she hands over a cheque for more money than she makes in a month to get him on the case.
Turns out it was a good thing she didn't go to a different private detective. There are enough people interested in information they think Tina has, that she's going to need someone with a particular skillset to keep her breathing til this case is solved.
A clever protagonist, and an intriguing private detective with secrets for miles. Read on for a page-turning good time.
The premise was intriguing, but I didn’t like the direction the story took. The writing became jolted; it was hard to process what was happening during action scenes. And there was a sexual undercurrent—e.g. women sprawled out, nude, their lingerie scattered around. Dunno. It just made me feel a little sick the way the women and men objectified themselves.
Well Written, Innovative, Paranormal Detective Story
I saw the mixed reviews and had to find out for myself if this was worth reading..oh yes it was! I just spent the last couple of weeks starting and quitting so many mediocre books on Kindle Unlimited I stopped leaving reviews. I was really discouraged with the suggested books kindle unlimited kept suggesting so I went back to Amazon and specifically requested paranormal detective stories and hit the jackpot with the first book on the list.
Some poor reviews were mystified with the writing style because it was “in the present” rather than written in the third person like older fiction, children’s stories and amateur romance novels. “Juliette saw the handsome Romeo and was so taken by his sapphire blue eyes, dark, curling hair, gleaming white teeth and brawny biceps that when he smiled at her she felt tingles in her unmentionable places.” VS “Oh Romeo, Romeo, when you dress in those tights and smile at me like that I have very naughty thoughts.” Haha..the first is passive and the other, active voice, it gets the reader involved in the action not just observing the action. THIS book, get the reader involved and intrigued right from the very beginning, when Tina, whose parents have been murdered, hires Tell, a most unconventional detective. Fortunately for appreciative readers, the heightened interest continues to the satisfying end.
Some other poor reviews were due to the reader never having been exposed to paranormal fiction and didn’t know what to make of the strange beings introduced. Caveat: I LOVE well written paranormal fiction and I am very picky about quality. I read over 100 books per year and many include magic, vampires, werewolves and lots of mayhem so I detest wasting my time on mediocre stuff unless I’m desperate and need to fall asleep.
The characters and plot are strategically developed through conversations over the entire story, suspension of disbelief was easy and the action just right. An A+ for a thoroughly engaging story without resorting to porn, ahem, boring “romantic” scenes…really, how many ways are there to describe a..oops.
Highly recommended, I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.
I love me a good paranormal mystery series and I consumed this book so quickly it caught me by surprise. The way this book is written had me so locked in that I was almost 1/2 of the way through the book before I realized that there were no individual chapters. I don’t recall ever seeing a book that’s almost 400 pages long not have chapters, but I think it made the reading a little more addicting because I couldn’t say “just one more chapter” and I had lost track of how far I was in the book.
The dynamic of Tina, Tell, and Hunter is so fun I and I like this interpretation of popular paranormal creatures. There were moments where Tell is just too secretive and I’m like bro, just tell her and Tina is a somewhat typical “dumb” human that just wants to help in a world she knows nothing about and is more of a liability than help.
For those who are weary about content…there really isn’t a whole lot of mature content in this book regarding language, gore, spice, or anything. Obviously there’s a murder mystery and there’s going to be some mention of criminal activities, but nothing outright graphic or descriptive/above a PG-13 rating. I could see that there’s some potential for more to happen as the series progresses, but I don’t know the author’s intentions to say for certain.
I’m definitely looking forward to reading the rest of the series.
When her parents are murdered, Tina hires a detective to do what the police have failed to do - find who killed them and bring them to justice.
Tell, the detective she randomly picks from an online listing, is not your ordinary PI; he has methods and skills the police don't, and he gets a lead on the case almost immediately. But working with Tell gets Tina noticed, and now she's in too deep to walk away.
I've read this book over and over. It's fast, clever and thoughtful, with a darkish feel. The writing is modern, sharp and follows thought patterns through hesitation, repetition and emphasis. The humor is observational and on the black side, rather than an overt feature .
The characters develop throughout the story; there is peril, and fighting, and capture and escape for dramatic interest, but what I especially love are the quieter, reflective moments when the grieving Tina contemplates how far she's come from what she thought she knew.
This is a 'download book 2 straightaway' situation. All the stars.
It was a well written book. But there are so many things this book wasn’t. It wasn’t a romance, it wasn’t a “girl finds out the world has a paranormal world within it” exploration, it wasn’t even a gritty “the world is cold and violent and all that matters is power”. It really wanted to be that last one, but missed the mark. It leans really hard into the mystery of it all, but mostly, it just doesn’t make enough sense, doesn’t give enough information or detail for the reader to decide what is happening. I spent most of it trying to decide if I liked it, trying to find parts that I recognized as romance, or sci fi, or whatever… I didn’t find any. The main character is frankly unlikeable. We didn’t even get a physical description of her. She reads as cold and analytical. The author writes the vampires as millionaire playboys who don’t care about much of anything, and honestly, I find I don’t care enough to read the next book. Maybe it’s your jam, maybe not.
Tell me a secret by Chloe Garner is the first in a series about a young woman’s search for her parents‘ killer. She hires a private detective when the cops have nothing they are willing to share after six weeks but she bites off more than she can chew with her pick. She’s too stubborn and too angry to let things go so begins to track the P.I. down when the answers aren’t readily found.
The writing is a bit stiff, as is Tina (protagonist), in many places and the characters seem somewhat one dimensional (Tell, Hunter, bad guys, etc) with only the main character really evolving in the story but it is the first in the series and this could be looked at as series setup, rather than plotting. The premise is different enough - Tina and Tell aren’t insta-lovers and it doesn’t seem to be heading that way - and the paranormal aspects seem to be as reasonable as paranormal aspects can be so I plan to read the next book before my final decision on the series.
Tina, the perfect heroine in Chloe Garner’s Tell, The Detective series, may have not had an auspicious start when she walks into the office of paranormal detective Tell to dee if he can find her parents’ murderer, but this leads to a pretty darn amazing change in her life as she becomes Tell’s assistant and over the course of four fantastic books, Tell Me A Secret (Book 1), Tell It Like It Is (Book 2), Show and Tell (Book 3) and Time Will Tell (Book 1), she experiences extraordinary adventure and much more. This is highly addictive stuff. So good that I could not put the books down, addictively reading them over a holiday weekend with barely a pause fir food or sleep. My husband was quite annoyed with me, but it was worth it. A pure adrenaline blast of fun with a perfect set of lead and supporting characters, and superbly written plots that were just plain fun to read. I most definitely highly recommend each of these books.
I enjoyed this beginning to the series. Its a new take on the paranormal and I think it will get even better. I would actually give it a 4.5 if I'm being honest. Tina has suffered greatly with the loss of her parents and she hires Tell to investigate. It took half of the book to get to the paranormal part (and I'm leaving out what kind they are) but it stays intriguing. I must say though that I grow weary of female leads that get out of the car, leave the building, or constantly do what the male lead warns her not to do. Sure she may save the day but I always roll my eyes. The action picks up nicely in the second half and has a great ending. I can't wait to start on the next book.
I enjoyed the start of the book, but there are no chapters, and some of it feels like I'm still none the wiser. Why is Tina on all the covers and not Tell? Can't he be filmed? Each writer has different rules about vampires. I like his work ethic, and character, I think I'll like Hunter too but may take some time. The no chapters thing is sort of making this an over 380 page essay. I would say read it if you like the genre. But I sometimes feel there are bits missed out as we are seeing things via Tina's view and so if she's not there we don't know what's going on, I'd think I'd like different chapters with his viewpoint and thoughts as well to make things clearer. It's why there are only 4 stars.
LOVED this book! My two favourite genre's; detectives and paranormal joined together! Onward to book 2!
“There are good people and bad people, just like any slice of the world, and honestly I kind of hang out in the middle, because I can’t be bothered.”
Tina is haunted by the murder of her parents. In order to find some answers she hires the enigmatic private investigator, Tell. But she is quickly drawn into his dangerous world.
Tell Me a Secret is a fast, fun urban fantasy with no romance and plenty of action. I found the characters and writing style appealing. While Tell is pretty super powered with a tiny bit of Sherlock Holmesian ability, Tina is just scared, confused and fairly normal. I’m definitely looking forward to book 2!
Meet Tina, she has had a tough time of it lately, you see, her parents were killed in an apparent robbery and no one at the police station will tell her what they’re doing to catch the perpetrators. So at her wits end Tina decides to hire a private investigator but against her best judgement she ends up hiring the first one she talks to and she can’t quite tell you why she did it either. Confused yet, you will be but eventually you will believe that you fully understand it all, but I doubt that. Oh and in case your wondering, yes, I recommend you get this book and read it as fast as you can;)
This is a very well written book but the writer’s style is different to many and for that reason I found it quite hard to read. However, at no point did I want to give up because it was so intriguing. Tina learnt a lot about herself and the supernatural world as well as helping to solve the mystery of her parent’s murder. There’s a hint of romance between Tina and Hunter which may develop in later books. I would definitely read more by this author but not immediately,
Tell Me A Secret by Chloe Gardner is one of the best books I've read all year! The characters are vividly drawn and completely original, the story unfolds masterfully, and the writing style is easy and flowing.
I don't read many mysteries because I tend to be able to figure them out halfway through. There were a few twists in this book that actually took me by surprise, and that's uncommon!
If you like a good detective story with plenty of Supernatural elements, then read this book now!
Fair warning: the first quarter of the book is a bit of a slog. But once it gets going, it really moves. The characters are complex and interesting. I think that this might be the first paranormal that I could really _believe_. It gritty and dark and no holds barred. This is no insta-anything book and you feel like you’ve actually achieved something right along with Tina. Ironic that someone named Tell would hold so doggedly to his secrets but there is no way that I won’t read every book in this series.
Engaging - Fast Read - More Fantasy than Paranormal
The story line was engaging. Although not what I expected. I didn't read the reviews well enough to know the story was about vampires...I was thinking more pstchic/ghost.
Despite being unprepared for that take on the story, the detective mystery part of the story keep the action moving.
The characters, action and locations were descriptive enough to generate the mental images that make the people in the story and their actions come alive in tbe places described.
This is the first book in a five-book series. While the story is complete in and of itself, it leaves a ton of loose ends and I really don't recommend reading just one!
Conversely, I *do* recommend reading the complete set. It has a very different feel than the other paranormal detectives. The focus is overwhelmingly on the woman who walks into his office as a client with a mystery that needs solving.
The focus on how her life changes and his, as well, is neatly handled as is their (small r) relationship. I hope you enjoy it when you get to it!
Good mystery adventure book. The MC is smart and a bit snarky, she also does things that someone with a lick of sense wouldn't do. That said she is an innocent learning about a dark and dangerous world. Overall good world building. The 2 main male characters are characters and it will be interesting to see more of them. Personnelly, all 3 need a "Gibbs slap" now and then to hit their reset button.
I had a mind-boggling amount of fun reading this book. I delighted in everything; the slow reveals, the relationships, the banter. Good adventure and world. I am shipping everyone.
I loved that it didn’t spell everything out - for instance, there was a fire and it was never said who started it. It’s completely obvious who did it but most UF books would insist on spoon feeding the reader that detail.
Wow. Where to begin? The characters stayed true to themselves through the whole book, no sullen-angry-grump turned loving and sweet. Great conversation on the human conscience under stress leading to enlightenment. Great and accurate depiction of grief. The story was interesting, not cliche. I read a lot of ebooks. I really liked this one. I will read the whole series.
This story isn't new, isn't going to keep you on the edge of your seat, but it kept me reading. I hope the series doesn't get too sexual or meaningless romance. Would like more of the action to be a focus. The paranormal "twist" is revealed slowly and doesn't surprise you too much. Its a simple story line and ok characters. nothing great, but entertaining.
I'm always looking for a good paranormal mystery, and this one had characters with realistic personalities and not over the top interactions. The characters are well developed, and the story is intriguing. I can't wait to get to know more about the characters, and to see how their "lives unfold". I also really enjoyed the writing style of this author and can't wait to discover more of her work.
In general I really enjoyed this book. However, I didn't like the lack of chapters, you just had a break in the paragraphs. I didn't think some of the sentences were well written and I didn't understand some of the scenes, like when they were in the club at around 70%. I didn't understand the banter. It just didn't seem to flow for me. Not a bad book, but not a great book either.
I very much wanted to like the book because I think the idea is great. Unfortunately, I found the book repetitive and the characters were not very likable. I also found the dialogue choppy and it was hard at times to determine which character was speaking. That said, I might give the second book a try to see if the characters evolve and the author's writing improves.
I wasn't sure what to expect when I readI wasn't sure what to expect when I read it, but I enjoyed. It ended up liking the characters very different than the vampire werewolf Paranormal I. Usually read definitely worth it. I could get behind these characters definitely worth the read in the buy. it, but I enjoyed. It ended up liking the characters very different than the vampire werewolf Paranormal I.Usually read definitely worth the buy
