Blue Moon Investigations #2

The Phantom of Barker Mill

Rate this book
Tempest Michaels never could refuse a woman in distress.

The owner of Barker Steel Mill has died. The coroner says natural causes, but the tearful widow is convinced otherwise and the Mill has a Phantom that has been held responsible for accidents and deaths dating back to 1912.

With Amanda’s assistance, he embarks on a quest to uncover the secret behind the cloaked figure, but is anyone telling him the truth? The new owner – the handsome, athletic, multi-millionaire Brett Barker, is less than happy to have them poking around and seems a little bit too interested in Amanda for Tempest’s liking.

If his unspoken feelings for Amanda were not enough of a distraction, his mother wants him to organise a baby shower, the cute girl in the coffee shop is being abundantly clear about what she wants Tempest for, he needs to hire an office assistant and the Dachshunds are threatening rebellion if the treat quota does not improve.

The gang return for another hilarious thrill-ride in the second installment of the Blue Moon Investigation series.

Let's start this off with an invitation to get some FREE books. No, you didn't read that wrong, we are talking about multiple free books. I love giving away free books because once people delve into the fast-paced mystery thrills I write, they go on to buy lots more.

All I need from you is an email address to send them to. Here's the link you need - https://mailchi.mp/fd47a6eb4ae5/patri...

When I wrote my first novel, Paranormal Nonsense, I was a Captain in the British Army. I would love to pretend that I had one of those careers that has to be redacted and in general denied by the government and that I have had to change my name and continually move about because I am still on the watch list in several countries. In truth though, I started out as a mechanic. Not like Jason Statham, sneaking about as a contract killer, more like one of those greasy gits that charge you a fortune and keep your car for a week when all you went in for was a squeaky door hinge.

At school, I was mostly disinterested in every subject except creative writing, for which, at age ten, I won my first award. However, calling it my first award suggests that there have been more, which there have not. Accolades may come but, in the meantime, I am having a ball writing mystery stories and crime thrillers and will claim to have more than a hundred books forming an unruly queue in my head as they clamor to get out.

Now retired from the military, I live in the south-east corner of England with a pair of lazy sausage dogs. Surrounded by rolling hills, brooding castles, and vineyards, I doubt I will ever leave, the beer is just too good.

Author has dreams of being George Clooney but acts like he is 12

I really like this series but won't read past book 2 because the author just won't give up his childish dreams of being a man whose and just had ruined the books with all his needless descriptions of breasts and how every woman wants him. The actual parts that are book related are quite good so it's a shame that he has ruined the books for me

Brilliantly different

I gave this book five stars because I really enjoyed it. I read the first book and thought it was very different to other fantasy stuff. So thought I'd carry on with this book. The characters are quite funny and you can relate to them easily. I love how the paranormal things are sorted out by using logic. I recommend these books to people who are fed up of reading the same old paranormal stuff.

I feel like these books are written for men by someone that’s GenX or older. The blatant sexism and misogyny is rampant as well as the gross talk amongst the men friends within the book. Most of the female characters are put into categories of sexiness and any woman who isn’t is labeled ugly, fat, hairy, desperate and basically unworthy. Even the main character’s mother is labeled as problematic while the father is jovial and easygoing. The main character also is supposedly wanted by all these different women and spends a lot of time talking about his physique and extreme care of it. To be fair he also slams other male characters in the book who don’t give the same care to their bodies and are “ugly” or “overweight”. The next book in the series is written from a woman’s perspective, so I may read it just to see how it is written and if she is as shallow.

The Phantom of Barker Mill is the 2nd book in the Blue Moon Investigations series. Paranormal investigator Tempest Michaels and his agency are hired to investigate a phantom at Barker Mill, thought to be responsible for several accidents and deaths over the years at the mill. A fun and entertaining mystery spoilt a little by Tempest's sexual fantasies and crudeness. I love that Amanda has joined the team and am looking forward to seeing more of her. The best part of this series is how the paranormal is shown to have logical explanations, rather along the lines of the Scooby Doo cases. An enjoyable and captivating mystery.

Second book in the series. Not quite as good as the first but a good, slightly steamy but not erotic sexy paranormal detective who doesn’t believe in the paranormal. This one is about a phantom or phantasm. Still got the two lovely dachshunds who are completely spoiled.

No go for me

I gave this book 3 stars because the story itself seems like a good story. This is the second book I read by this author, and I just couldn’t make it past page 51. The straw that nearly broke the camel’s back was the glaring lack of research. On page 46, for example, there is a bit about looking left or looking right, and whether that means lying or recalling a memory. This book was written in 2017 and that particular bit of psychology was debunked in 2012.

The constant food/health “advice” and exercise paragraphs along with the main character being a “nice guy” who is constantly internally objectifying women (male gaze fantasies run rampant as this supposedly mediocre looking guy has multiple hot women just wanting him for sex) is hugely off-putting and just detracts from the real story.

I think I will stick with Skelgill mysteries as I appreciate the more mature viewpoint.

Fun unParanormal mystery

Another book in the series, another pair of mysteries solved. This was a fun read - I even had a few laugh out loud moments.

Continuing on from his previous book we see Tempest and his friends digging into another case of suspected paranormal events.

Great storytelling and characters. And a fun read.

It is only a matter of days since Tempest Michaels solved both the vampire serial killer case and the Blue Bell Big Foot case and the publicity has ensured he now has plenty of work on hand. Enough that he really needs a partner, so step forward Amanda Harper who has decided her future lies outside of the police force, and quite possibly with Blue Moon Paranormal Investigations.
Tempest receives a call from a widow whose husband has just died, natural causes according to the coroner but she is convinced he was murdered and the phantom at the family owned steel mill was responsible. Amanda still has a month left at work in the local police force so can only join Tempest in her off duty time so Tempest is resigned to solving the case on his own. Well, himself plus his two miniature dachshunds plus his friend and ex army comrade Big Ben. Another enjoyable romp with the paranormal investigator who doesn't believe in the paranormal and who is very upfront with his clients that his aim is to prove that whatever happened wasn't mysterious or out of this world but the work of something entirely believable and normal.
Steve Higgs provides a uniquely different viewpoint compared to the usual ones in the many books featuring paranormal storylines and that alone would make the books well worth reading. But they are also humerous, have a very believable main character in Tempest Danger Michaels, two cute and adorable miniature dachshunds and a lady killer friend Big Ben who all add their own spice to the narrative. This is an even better series than his Patricia Fisher books and one that I hope will continue for a very long time.
Truly excellent.

Is there really a phantom or else what or who is it?

Steve Biggs has become one of my favorite authors. In this his second book involving Tempest Michaels, Tempest is hired to find out does a real phantom haunt a steel mill and did the owner did a natural death or was he murdered and then by whom. Tempest is talked in to hiring Amanda as his new partner who he is secretly in love with but he doesn't know how to get to first base with. Along with Bull and Dozed his beloved dachshunds he tries to solve the mystery. With the usual large sprinkle of comedy in the fast moving novel. These books are stand alone so Terrance read in any order. If you have not read any of Steve Biggs this is a good book to start with. Highly recommended!

I am finding that I absolutely love reading this series!!!

After thoroughly enjoying the first book of this series, I turned to this one to see if it was as good. To my surprise and delight I found it to be every bit as good if not better! I find myself commiserating with the "hero" of these books, as he is quite human, with all the quips and foibles that come along with being a mere human, lol! I find myself laughing out loud at some of the things he is himself into, with entirely the best of intentions . . . but then, we all know what the road to he'll is paved with! I would recommend this series to anyone who loves a good mystery/adventure and likes a bit of a laugh along with it!

Good Story, Good Humor, but lacking in Morality

As someone who grew up in a growing town in Northeast Florida, during the 1950's, I can see how our movies, our books, our nightly news reporters have chipped away at values and morals our mostly Christian heritage implanted in our minds, first as children attending Sunday school, then as students growing up, when prayer, Allegiance to the Flag of the United States, were still held in agreement in our society. Reading a book written in Great Britain, supposedly taking place in the 1950's, I can state that the conversations between these characters, and thoughts of the narrator of the story, are definitely hilarious by today's standards, but most working people of that era, would not have spoken so outwardly of their sexual exploits, certainly not in the suburbs, where I grew up. Even though all my friends were members of different denominations of Christianity, we all got along, by not talking about religion, and sex was not a subject talked about openly.

That being said, I found the two books I really found them entertaining, interesting, and enjoyable, as a novel to pass time, as well as well told, and not objectionable by today's standards. I appreciate that the author did not use an excess of foul language, and even the sex and wishes for sex, were handled tastefully. Just for light reading, and for those who do enjoy a not too complicated mystery, or whodunit story, will enjoy how the protagonist figures out the crimes, and who done it.

3 1/2 stars. Tempest Michaels is kind of what you think a typical bachelor is or at least what a lot of males want them to be. Lots of women are interested in him. He is in pretty good shape and he doesn't have your ordinary job.

But it turns out that there is more to him than that. He actually wants a relationship. He is very affectionate with his dogs. And his relationship with his parents is hilarious and proves he isn't nearly as tough as he likes to present to the world.

He is also very determined to prove that there is nothing supernatural in the world. By mistake, it stated that his investigation business specialized in the supernatural. And now he gets cases that seem to have a preternatural cause. Well, people dressed up in sheets or wearing fangs aren't going to scare him. There is always some logical explanation. Or so he thinks.

That doesn't mean the cases aren't dangerous. The latest one is to prove if the death at a mill was an accident, the supposed phantom or something far more sinister but very human based. Let the games begin.

Fun. Snarky. And a decent mystery as well. Now if Tempest can only explain those few things that weren't explained....

"The Phantom of Barker Mill" has all the ups and downs of "Paranormal Nonsense", lots of laddish humour (breasts and Mr. Wriggly play important roles) but also a cracking story (nothing new but well told nonetheless).
More so than in the first book the typos were very noticeable and some of the conversations were oddly phrased.

Mr. Wriggly's (ahem!) formerly celibate life is relieved by waitress Hayley, but Tempest continues to yearn for PC Hotstuff (aka Amanda Harper).
The Phantom of Barker Street Mill is up to his old tricks and the latest owner is dead. Can Tempest and his motley crew find out what is the explanation? Of course they can.
In the meantime there is a demon hound to be tracked down (probably the funniest part of the book) and the curious case of the violent Klowns (sic!).
It's somewhat more of the same old same old but I reckon it won't get stale for a couple more episodes.
3.5 Stars.

Second book in a series that looks like it runs to 22? This installment smacks of Hound of the Baskervilles with an updated twist while the main case is a bit Phantom of the Opera, but again, updated. These books are lighthearted fun, the focus being as much about the main character's life as it is the cases he solves. Some of the chapters seem to cut off in odd places, leaving the reader hanging a bit, but I wouldn't call it a deal breaker. Basically, if you enjoy a bit of slapstick humor with a bunch of the boys, this is your series.

The author is not the narrator of the audio version. Second installation still has the same quality issues as the first. Still not a deal breaker. I can see myself listening on when needing a break between heavier offerings.

This time Tempest is tasked with proving the patriarch of a family, and the owner of the Barker MIll, was murdered by his son. It's hard to tackle though as the mill has a reputation of being haunted. Everytime thier is an accident someone sees a person in a black cape, and a burnt handprint is found at the location. While investigation, Tempest is also asked by the son and inheritor of the mill (yes the one he's investigating for murder) to find and expose the phantom as fake.
Oh, and Tempest is also tasked with finding a man who was eaten by a glowing dog while working at his junkyard.
There were times in this book I laughed out loud. I really like the characters, and Tempest has plenty of snark. The mysteries are good, and I really like them.

Unforutantly, this second book in the series by Steve Higgs is a bit of a letdown in comparison to the first. The humor is less prevalent and the story takes a but of a strange turn every once and awhile. Things never seem to work out in an obvious fashion, but in a simple one. That said, it is often predictable.

Now with all that know, the story is good and well written. Some parts of the story are downright fascinating. Others are a little bit out there.

Overall, a really good book, but not as much as the first. One thing I like about this paranormal investigation is the human aspect of it. Still refreshing and makes it even more of a mystery. Predictable, but a mystery.

A bit slow

The story just doesn’t hold my attention well. I appreciate the little life details about fixing breakfast or walking the dogs, but there is too much of it. And as for the activities directly related to the case, there’s no excitement. It’s just plodding scene after scene. The premise is good - paranormal doesn’t exist, but it sure seems spooky - but the action is too pedestrian. Maybe real life is that way, but I am reading such books to be entertained. And I could really do without all the sexual references. Once in a while, okay, but it’s tediously too frequent and distracts from the storyline.

I'm finding this series a lot of fun and funny as heck. Without any swear words (even British ones!), Tempest and his friends discuss their sex lives and Tempest (calling his penis Mr. Wriggly, for goodness sake!) reacting to every female in sight in some detail. And I was cracking up at some of it. However, there's an awful lot of it and as enjoyable as some of it is; it got to be a bit much. It almost detracted from the main story. All in all, a good one. Recommended (if you don't mind a bit of male sex talk).

This, the second book in the Blue Moon Investigations series, is much better written than the first. Higgs is getting into his stride, although I feel there is still too much mention of Mr Wriggly.

Tempest is asked to investigate the death of a mill owner by his widow, who tell leads him to suspect her son did the deed so that he could sell the mill. When Tempest questions the son, the son asks him to find out what is behind the Phantom of the Mill episodes that have been occurring more frequently lately.

An okay story. Tempest Michaels is a paranormal investigator: meaning he investigates unusual circumstances but doesn't believe in the paranormal. In this novel, he solves three more situations while alienating all of the women to whom he's attracted. Furthermore, he proves himself easily drawn into traps, especially by attractive women. While entertaining, this title doesn't seem to have much redeeming value.

Action-packed. Entertaining. Scary. Tragic. Twisted. Unpredictable. Wonderful characters.

The book dragged a little in the first half, but picked up quite significantly in the last third or so., with a well executed twist that I really should have seen coming but didn't.

There is some good character development in this book and the action scenes were well paced and kept things moving. Kudos for the introduction of an LGBT character without a lot of hoopla or excessive dwelling on James/Jane.

Frustrated with the author

I’ve read all the available books now and initially liked them very much for their themes. But reading this book, I got fed up with the benevolent sexism that is quite blatant in this book. Two of the main characters are like teenage boys obsessed with boobs and sex. The female characters are consistently described as ready to jump into bed with no desire for a future. It’s so disappointing because I like the Amanda and James/Jane stories.

This is a brilliant read.
Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start.
Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable.
Great suspense and found myself second guessing every thought I had continuously.
Can't wait to read what the author brings out next.
Recommend reading.

I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and this is my honest review.

Another Great Read

Thoroughly enjoyed reading this great story, Steve Higgs entices you in with a variety of interesting characters and extraordinary and fascinating occurrences to be solved by the fabulous Tempest. Looking forward to reading the next book, I’ve grown quite attached to Tempest and his escapades, Mr Wiggly makes me laugh too! Plus I’m in love with Bull & Dozer 🥰

Looking for a series on Audible I found this one. I went through books 1 through 9 one right after the other. The stories are interesting and so far have not had repetitive plot lines, which is quite refreshing. The characters are interesting, some of the verbiage that is spewed from the protagonist’s mother is so real that it makes me roll my eyes, and sometimes absolutely laugh out loud. This kind of character development makes continuing on in a series worth the time.

another enjoyable outing for blue moon investigations

Another enjoyable episode for Tempest as he unravels the mystery of the Phantom.

It’s just a casual narrative of what’s happening. It’s easy to be swept up in the narrative and find yourself losing time to the insidiously laid back but ensnaring tale being told.
Also very easy to dip in and out of without much effort. Recommended.

Another book where the author details his adolescent hormone angst by describing gratuitous serial images and sexist ideas that add absolutely no value to the story except to show men are pigs. The book has a couple of other stories that could also be omitted to spare the reader. Why am I reading this series? Trying to meet the guy who I was first introduced to in the Patricia Fisher series. Well, I guess he'll eventually show up.

Ok Well i tried to be fair when rating book one and did point out that the way this guy thinks of females isn't at all great, but this one just made it worse if men realy thought like that i do have to say that the adage men are pigs is conpleatly true when thinking of this character. He is a pig User females for Sex and has thoughts like a homonal Teen boy its not a good read for These reasons and i will not be reading the next in the series.
