As a Christian songwriter and music producer, Jenny Phillips has released over 27 albums and has shared her love of music across the world, speaking at over 1,100 events in 23 countries and selling over a million CDs. In order to reduce the stress and time commitments that naturally come with a music label, and so she could focus more on her young family, Jenny left her music label in 2011. She now offers her music for free on www.hislightmusic.com.
When Jenny's children began going to school, she turned toward another one of her passions—education. Jenny began homeschooling in an effort to provide a faith-based, high-academic education focused on building noble character. Not wholly satisfied with any curriculum she could find and deeply concerned about the loss of good literature in our world, she founded The Good and the Beautiful.
Jenny lives in Utah with her husband and five children. In addition to music, motherhood, and good literature, Jenny loves family history, gardening, traveling, and exercising. She is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but she enjoys working with people of many faiths as she shares her multi-denominational curriculum, rejoicing in the common good that all Christians share.
These books are well written for beginners and beautifully illustrated. The interest level for my five-year-old is higher than for boxes A and B; he wouldn't read those, but he loves these! The stories are more engaging and interesting while still encouraging high moral characteristics and strong family relationships.
Highly recommended! I'm so happy we discovered these books. My son has been learning in leaps and bounds since we started using The Good and the Beautiful curriculum.
I’m going to review boxed sets A through D as a whole, and copy my review for each one.
I have suffered through a lot of easy readers in my time as a parent. And I do mean a lot. I was blessed to have these early reader sets for my last batch of emerging readers, and especially because they came in a set of three, it has been a godsend to have readers I have spent and will spend so much time listening to be more enjoyable than any others we have used in the past. Probably the biggest plus for ME is the variety in these books. The art and illustrations are different from book to book. The representation in each book is diverse. The style of literature varies from fiction to nonfiction and even poetry. We get to visit different geographic locations in the books and meet different characters. The biggest plus for my children has been readers that are appropriate for their reading development. One of my biggest pet peeves are the leveled readers that throw words in that are far beyond the decoding skills of the intended reader. We didn’t have to worry about that with these books. Each one was decodable, which served to increase confidence and motivation to continue practicing their reading skills. Sets A and B are fewer pages each, with fewer words on each page, yet they still each contain an actual little storyline. Boxes C and D are longer, with more words. Once these books were mastered, I found myself with three eager readers on my hands, ready to tackle “regular” books off our shelves. I can’t say enough good about these box sets. They are far superior to any others we’ve encountered.
