Wow, I really love Koichi. I can’t believe this has all happened because this fool didn’t realise a girl fancied him. The fight between him and Pop*Step with her song of heartbreak playing was a a real beauty. Koichi finally got his training montage with help from his master and those guys who we first saw him fighting. I can’t believe how far these guys have come. They were attempted rapists at the beginning! And the possible future Pop was imagining before she blew herself up was just kind of weird to me because I never saw them like that’s, but I can now see that it’s not a school girl crush, she really does love him. Number Six is quite cool. I just love when he switches between Rock and Six. But where does his scar go exactly? I don’t know where this story is going to go and how long this battle is going to last. I hope it’s not the end, but it seems to be. I want to see Koichi soaring to new heights and I want him to be a hero. I don’t want Pop to be the girl he couldn’t save.

Well that was disappointing. The first thing that happens is the creative team fridges the female lead Pop Step. They turn her into a villain as she sings and destroys part of the town she has spent years defending. Instead of rushing to catch her and save her the Crawler and team spend time “training” which just looks like collecting data for the bad guys. Because training montage? I mean is this a 1980s action flick or a Manga with heroes with quirks? I guess the writer wanted Pop to go all Dark Phoenix X-Men or something because the big climatic attack starts and Pop is blowing things up good while she sings. The good guys race to the rescue but Endeavor the number two hero shows up in a mood and he starts a giant fire storm swearing he will destroy both Pop and Crawler who are just evil villains that need to be put down. But then somehow the number two hero runs out of gas and needs a breather. The real bad guy seems to be just there for filler as the bad guy “helps” as a “hero” to track down Pop with some dumb good guy who he then kills. There were all these “plans” made during the training montage that are just ignored. Just as it looks like Pop is going to do something big with her bee bombs in some grand suicide it seems the Crawler shows up and the bad guy shoots Pop Step. Queue dramatic music and a cliff hanger ending of the volume.

Here is the thing, if I wanted to read American style comic books I would just reach over onto my desk and read this weeks release of new comic books (did you know Superman is gay now? No turns out he is Bi, oh it is actually Superboy. No it is Jon Kent who is now the new Superman of Earth and he is Bi we know because he kissed a boy or will kiss a boy. I only mention this because it is fun to watch conservatives who are angry that a fictional illegal alien’s Son is something that scares them … anyway) but instead of reading those American comics I took the time to track down a Japanese comic collection so I could read something different that more often than not gives a unique look at power dynamics in a world where people have powers.

I mean seriously this is dumb, we know that eventually in the main My Hero book that both Pop Step and Crawler were taking the Hero Exam. So this is weird and pointless story here and I’m not sure how we get from here to Hero training when both these characters are current being called outright villains as one is blowing up part of a town. Where are the Speedster guy and Eraserhead and Midnight? I thought they were friends with the kids. If I wanted dumb comics I can find them without the effort of obtaining a Japanese Manga.

Ooph, this got dark quick.

Most of this volume is a training montage of Koichi preparing to take on the newly villainous Pop Step, assisted by Knuckleduster's apprentice. Meanwhile Pop's struggling with her transformation, and Nomura's latest infiltration technique puts another pro hero in his cross hairs.

There's a growing sense of dread as this volume continues, culminating in a horrible cliffhanger that made me want to throw my book across the room because I can't read the next chapter yet.

My Hero Academia: Vigilantes, Vol. 10 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next nine chapters (73–81) of the on-going manga series.

It continues the storyline of a mind controlled Kazuho Haneyama by her so-called manager Rokuro Nomura, who is actually Number 6 – a member of the Villain Factory. Kazuho Haneyama as Pop☆Step uses her voice to control explosive bees to destroy the city. She fled the scene when Koichi Haimawari as The Crawler shows up to stop her, but is knocked out midair only to be rescued by Sōga Kugizaki.

During the calm before the storm, Kazuho Haneyama is declared a villain and Koichi Haimawari goes missing, but in truth he is convalescing and later trains himself to capture Kazuho Haneyama and to free her from the evil influence. He continues to train in a warehouse left by Iwao Oguro – his master. Meanwhile, a Hero Patrol is created to weed out vigilantes.

Kazuho Haneyama in her new guise of Queen☆Pop starts wreaking havoc again. Koichi Haimawari as The Crawler and Sōga Kugizaki and his team heads to stop her. They are not alone as Enji Todoroki as Endeavour is there to take out Queen☆Pop, but Koichi Haimawari manages to stop his attacks and neutralize the bees that were out to infect more heroes. Koichi Haimawari manages briefly to get through Kazuho Haneyama, but she is shot in the back by Rokuro Nomura.

Hideyuki Furuhashi has written this tankōbon. It continues the arc of the mind-controlled Kazuho Haneyama – it is mainly two encounters with a brief period of peace between. During the peaceful moments, readers get more back story of Kazuho Haneyama through flashbacks and Iwao Oguro through a letter left to Kazuho Haneyama through Sōga Kugizaki.

All in all, My Hero Academia: Vigilantes, Vol. 10 is a wonderful continuation to a series that seems intriguing and I cannot wait to read more.

The idea of showing the dark side of pop step was great, but it wasn't executed nicely. Evil pop step was striking the same pose in all the panels which kinda dampened my excitement. I'm more interested in Master's story at this point.

TV Tropes defines the word Expy as "short for 'exported character.' A character from one series who is unambiguously and deliberately based on a character in another, older series. A few minor traits, such as age or hair color, may change, but there's no doubt that they are almost one and the same."
Instead of reviews, I'll just keep a running tally of Expies per volume. Enjoy!

- fat! Robin (I wanna say it looks a little more like the Tim Drake version of the Robin suit, but could also be Young Justice toon's Dick Grayson Robin suit, which is fitting since Rock essentially takes out that Robin to be a knockoff Nightwing)

sidenote about the plot: one of my most despised tropes of superhero comics is good-girl-hero-goes-bad-gets-sexy-more-mature-black-outfit. This is no exception; however, thematically it's greatness since the Crawler finally has to fight somebody he has personal ties with, even moreso since possible romance. Also, oh HELL NAW they pulled a La La Land on us & did a "what if...we were happy together?" NOT COOL!
...
Despite all this suffering, I still rank it pretty darn good. Cuz it was!

Chronique complète :
https://sunread26.wordpress.com/2025/...

Extrait :

This volume focuses on the relationship between Pop Step and Koichi, and how a simple thing like not revealing how you feel to someone, or not taking the time to think about how another person may feel, can sometimes have disastrous consequences.

We pick up where volume 9 left off with Pop's first attack, and of course it's a huge shock to everyone. Friends and family are all stunned to see her become a villain, but of course, only Koichi and a handful of others who know about the bees realise that it's not by her doing. A group of familiar faces make a comeback, and Koichi faces what is probably his biggest challenge yet: to go up against a friend. But in order to do so, he needs some help and training.

Koichi has grown so much from when we first met him. His abilities have expanded dramatically and he's so much more powerful. I love that despite this, he's kept his good nature and kind soul. He trains hard with a group of enemies-turned-allies, working on bringing all his Quirk advancements that we've seen so far all together to form a battle strategy. Whilst he trains, we learn more about Knuckleduster and what happened to him regarding the loss of his Quirk, but it also hints at all things leading to a very familiar enemy from the main series. We also get to see what he's been up to during his absence.

With Pop taken over by the mind-manipulating bees, we see what happens when a person becomes possessed by them. We've never really seen how they can affect a person up until now, and it's really tragic. Poor Pop is suffering, and Koichi is determined to save her. This is all because of Number 6, a terribly devious fellow, using his disguise to sneak around and gain information for Pop's attack.

Pop attacks again, forcing Koichi to put his training to use to try and stop her, and then save her. But, of course, it's not plain sailing. We get an appearance from the Number 2 hero, Endeavor. He's very different to the Endeavor we know now. He's very hot-headed and violent, not unlike Bakugou from the main series in a way. We then see the problem with the 'villain' label that anyone who isn't a hero that uses their Quirk is given. Vigilantes are villains in the eyes of the law, despite doing the exact same job as a hero but without payment or fame, all because they don't have a license. Poor Koichi is labelled a villain by Endeavor, simply for trying to save his friend. Koichi, like a slap round the face, finally realises how he feels for Pop, especially after her feelings for him have been revealed. He thinks about the life they could have together, and now he races to help her before Endeavor incinerates them both, labelling them both villains. A very tense moment occurs, before you're left on a huge cliffhanger that leaves you questioning the fate of a character.

It's really heating up now. The early volumes of My Hero Academia: Vigilantes were very light-hearted and easy, but now things are getting tense, and the story is getting darker. It really makes you wonder what the fate of these characters will be by the time we get to the end and catch up with the main series.

Pop, now brainwashed by the evil bees, is in her villain era as Koichi tries to save her.

I honestly have zero clue how it took me so long to continue on in this series, especially after the cliffhanger of the last one! The scarred villain, Rokuro Nomura, has used his evil bee thingers to brainwash Pop so now she’s quite literally blowing shit up and causing some real issues, but other than Koichi they don’t realize she’s being used to do these villainous acts so they have to catch her before the police or she could be lost. There’s a legit heartbreaking moment of Pop noticing Koichi during her first attack n being like “oh NOW you notice me??” Oof, that was too real even tho it’s so clear how much this dummy cares about her.

He gets this beautiful note from his master trying to uplift him and saying he has the truest heart of a hero and it’s all he needs to help others. And then he gets help from Soga and co (the spike quirk former villain/street thug turned good guys, he’s kinda fine I won’t lie 😏) to inform them of how to save Pop from the bees without killing her, cuz I think they were there when the master did the same for his daughter.

We get an unhinged cameo of Endeavor trying to straight up murder Pop and Koichi with his flames because he sees no moral ambiguity, he’s fucking wild but it was a little funny. We also get this other heartbreaking moment of Pop thinking of what her future married and old with kids with Koichi could be like UGH! It can still be that!!! I can’t let it go, they’re too cute!!! I just want them to be happy and in love and I have faith he’ll find a way to save her. But of course to screw with my head, the moment she seems to waver a little seeing Koichi in mid jump to grab her, this ends with Nomura SHOOTING her!!!! I’m not convinced this killed her, but wtf!! He’s such a confusing main villain, I have very little clue about what his motivations are, so just along for the ride with him.

I what’s wild is there only seems to be 15 volumes, so if that’s true I only have 5 more left which is insane!! I guess it makes sense since this is a MHA spinoff and with Nomura clearly our main villain, I could see this wrapping up if they’re able to defeat him soon, so we’ll see! I hope to stop putting it off and finish it soon, fingers crossed I listen to myself this time!

I need to start this review by saying that Sixxy needs to dial it back a notch or seven. The man is apparently in his Annie Wilkes era and he needs to be spritzed in the face with a spray bottle like a misbehaving cat. He hit that point in the last volume but somehow this just keeps ramping up with this volume.

If you've not caught up with this side series by now, you really need to. It stands strong on its own as a separate (earlier) installment in the same world, and it's volumes like this one where the inspiration from things like "The Dark Knight Returns" and "Misery" really start to shine through. (Yeah I know Furuhashi and Betten Court don't outright mention "Misery" among the inspirations but if you are familiar with it, you'll see what I mean when you read the previous volume and this one.) Simply put, "Vigilantes" has absolutely earned my love, and this volume especially hits hard, given how much Pop Step grew on me. There's a lot of heart-wrenching character exploration in this volume, as well as further insights into how messed up some of the laws of the MHA world are. (Apparently applying the villain label to someone means that even if they're a minor, they're granted no leniency and are considered to have forfeit a lot of their human rights, which is utterly warped.)

I know there are people who consider this series too lighthearted and/or not canon, but I really cannot stress enough how good this is and how much I really feel like MHA fans can find something to enjoy here.

The feels! The feels! My heart! Let's Go!

Episode 75-The Letter
This is right up there with Naruto's mom's speech to baby Naruto for me. We also get confirmation that it was the other half of the Musketeer phrase. I was right! Wish I wasn't right, but that is what happen. Also the ending sentence before the P.S. ("Fly, Koichi. Fly, hero.") with the panel, was perfection!

Episode 76-Deadly Weapon
This was nice training montage. We also see just how powerful Koichi can be. Also Soga is following someone's footsteps.

Episode 81-Bee My Pop
THAT ENDING! What?! MY HEART! NO! NO! NO! I need the next volume soon! Does this mean what I think this means or is this just a terrible cliffhanger? Please Hideyuki Furuhashi say this is just a terrible cliffhanger and what we saw happen is not what actually happen! Please?!

Verdict: Oh, this volume was just so good, but it was also terrible, due to the end! What is going to happen? In theory, I know this happen in the past compare to the events of My Hero Academia, but we are not sure how far back and we know nothing about these characters in My Hero Academia.

Koichi is turning out to be more of a G than I realized. It looks like shooty go blam is way more powerful than he led us to believe. This is gonna be a real test of Koichi’s strength now. He’s gotta save Pop without getting caught by any pro heroes, or the true villain. I wish grandpa fist had just told him everything when he realized that the two of them could become targets. Especially considering how slow Koichi is on the uptake. My guy took a min to realize he was dealing with the actual mastermind behind Pop’s kidnapping and the bee parasites. Plus we have Endeavor who is ready to destroy them both as the villains he sees them as. He ain’t fun and he won’t go easy on them.

This would’ve been easier if he had just gotten his hero license tbh. Also this sounds weird, but evil guy kinda reminds me of Kimblee and Greed from FMA:B lol.

Despite having few cameos from the original MHA crew (although Naomasa and Endeavor both made appearances, and I was suitably giddy about that), I did actually find this volume kind of interesting. Mostly because Soga was back, and I like him. I still don't care about the villain or the fact that the damn bees are back. And I gotta say, while I understand that there's more involved than just the character's own sense of disappointment/rejection, having a female character go evil just because she isn't gonna get to marry a dude and live out a mediocre life with him and their two children is just really meh, man. You can do better than that.

Glad to see the narrative concentrating more on its core characters again and I liked Koichi exploring his powers in a training montage.
I'm a bit torn about Pop Step's upgrade to a villain. On one hand, it finally makes her somewhat relevant to the plot, on the other hand she doesn't really do much with it besides blowing up stuff and being a motivational Macguffin for Koichi. The author even says so in the side notes, stating that he turned her evil so that Koichi would absolutely have to fight.
Also, still no Knuckleduster and I'm salty about it.

I dont care about evil pop, and it feels like this series took a very sudden left turn that I am loving less and less. I have felt like this was series was building up to something great but the further in I get the more I see them wrapping things up that I care about and introducing elements that feel out of place.
And at one point , Koichi calls to Pop like "POPPP" and wouldn't it be more like "POOOOOOP?" Or does that read too much like poop?

I loved how this issue threw in characters from the main series even if just for cameos. I feel like the pacing for this one is a little off, however. It felt slow in some parts and really rushed in others. The story got really intense really fast which was a ramp up from the last few issues, but it didn't quite keep the tension going consistently.

With some unexpected happenings in volume 9, this volume is one that pulls at your heart strings and puts you in a situation in which you never could have (at least i didn't) imagined. Pop (new Queen Bee) vs. Koichi (The Crawler). This is an issue full of action, awesome other hero cameos and of course a series defining standoff. Cannot wait to sink into the next installment.

It took me about ten volumes, and I wouldn't have lasted that long if it weren't for the Aizawa backstory I wanted to read, but I'm finally starting to appreciate this series. Now that various threads are coming together, it seems much more interesting to me than it did at the start.

Honestly, I can't be the first one to point out that Soga Kugisaki definitely looks like a mix between Bakugou and Kirishima. Yap, I can't be the only one.

Endeavor, dear old Endeavor, you are cool, but also... not. You can clearly see ow work up he is and how hard he tries. The poor guy.
